L'Association Suisse d e Sta tistiQue, rondte e n janvier
1988, a pour but d e promouvoir l'usage et le
developpement d e la statistiQue en Suisse, de
représenter les intérêts des practiciens , des c h erc heurs
et d es e nseignants dans ce domaine et d e contr ibuer à
faire reco nnaître la statistique comme une d isci pline à
part en tière.
Le Bulletin est pub lié trois fois pa r an: en février,
juin et octobre. Il est envoyé à tous lel membres de
l'association . Les frais de cotisation annuelle sont de
Fr. 20 pour les personnes plwsiques et de Fr. 200
pour les personnes morales .

Le premier Bulletin de l'Association Suisse de Statistique
(deutsche Version auf der Rückseite)
Comme la Suisse, qui est composée de personnes appartenant à de
nombreuses culture11 différentes, la statistique regroupe des personnes
provenant de nombreuses disciplines différentes. Ainsi il n'est peut-être
pas surprenant que ce n'est qu'en 1988 que les statisticiens et
statisticiennes suisses décidèrent de former
enfin une
association
nationale. Il est signi ficatlf que, par delli les cultures, les langues et les
professions, un consensus émerge, indiquant un besoin profond d'union et
de communication.
Il serait dommage que ce Bulletin ne contienne que les informations
officie lles de notre associa tion. Bien plus, i1 devrait permettre
facili ter la circulation d'information entre les
statisti~:iens
de
travaillant en
Suisse. Mais ceci n'est possible qu'avec la participation de chacô.Jtl.
N'hésitez donc pas li prendre spontanément contact avec le rédacteur pour
communiquer vos renseignements en les publiant dans le Bulletin avec vos
collègues (par exemple: futurs séminaires ou confére nces, visites de
statisticiens étrangers, promotions, critique de livres ou de logiciels etc).
Enfin notre association est encore jeune. C'est pourquoi les membres
recoivent cette fois deux exe mplaires du Bulletin. Ils pourront ai nsi
donner le deuxième exemplai re à un collègue qui ne fait pas encore partie
de notre association.
J'attends de vous des suggestions, des critiques, aussi des encouragements,
mais surtout beaucoup d'informations à publier :

Wie in der Schweiz Personen aus verschiedenen Kulturen zusammenleben,
führt die Sta tistik Personen aua verschiedenen Oisziplinen zusammen.
Deshalb ist es vi elleicht nient erataunlich, dass sien die schweizerischen
Statistil<er und Statistikerinnen erst 1988 entschlossen haben end!ich eine
nationale Vereinigung zu gründen. Es ist bemerkenswert, dass über die
Kulturen, Sprachen und Arbeitsgebiete hinweg ein Konsens gefunden
wurde, und dies zeigt ein tiefliegendes Bedürfniss nach Zusammenschluss
und Kommunlk ation.
Es ware schade, wenn dieses Bulletin nur die off iziellen Mitteilungen der
Vereinigung
enthalten
würde.
Vielmehr
sollte
es
auch
den
lnformationsaustausch zwischen den in der Schweiz t atigen Statistil<ern
erleichtern. Dies ist aber nur moglich, wenn alle sien um Mitarbeit
bemühen. Deshalb scheuen Sie s!ch nicht, spontan mit dem Redaktor
Kontakt auh:u nehmen, um lhre lnformationen durch Publikationen im
Bulletin an lh re Kollegen weite rzugeb en (z.S. zukünftige Seminarien,
Konferenzen, Besuch von ausUindischen Statistikern, Promotionen, Kritik
von 8üchern und Software, .••).
Unsere Verelnlgung ist noch jung. Deshalb erhalten die Mitglieder diesma[
lWei Exemplaren des Bulletins. Sie kënnen das zweite Exemplar einem
KoUegen geben, de r noch nicht unserer Vereinigung ang eh(lrt.

Dear Colleague,
The 1988 Autumn Meeting of the Swiss Stalistical Society is to take place on Salurday,
December 3rd, at the University of Fribourg-Pérelles.
Tbe meeting consists of two parts, open to ali:
a} Research Students Meeting
This is scbeduled to begin at 10 a..m., and to lasl until lunchtime. The meeting
will consist of short presentations (:\bout 30 minutes eacb), by students describing their
researcb. lt is boped that as many studeots as possible will participate, so that as much
contact as possible ca.n be achieved between students at different universities. As a form of
encouragement, we are able to reimburse traveUing expenses within Switzerland and the
cost of lunch for those students atiending. One aim of this inaugural meeting is also to
find a group of stndents willing to organize tbe next Researcb Students Meet.ing.
Ail those who wish to attend shou!d complete the enclosed application fotm, so tbat
lunch can be arrauged for the right number of people. You do not bave to make to make
a pMsentation (but you are encouraged to do so!)

The international confer ence on Recent Develop~ents in Statisti cal Data Analysis and Inference in honor of C. R. Rao will b e
held from August 21 to August 24, 1989 at the University of
Neuchâtel , Switzerl and . The conference takes place over four
days and will include Invited talks contributed papers, software and poster presentations. There will be ample opportunitie s for de.m onstrating statistica~ software .
THE SITE
A town of yellow stone, NeuchAt el wa s founded upon a h il l whi c h
the castle and collegiate church dom.inated since the twelith
century. Behind are the forest of Chaumont with on both sides
splendid vine yards. From the van tage point, Neuchâtel contempla tes the lake, the largest in the country to be entirely surround ed by Swiss terr ito ry. Opening on to the lake is the mar ket s quare with its char~ing market hall. An e mbankment of fou r
kilometers stretches along the shores .
University of Neuchâtel
Founded in 1836 , the University of Neuchâtel is situated within
a few steps from the lake. Though famous for its French language d iscipline, the Un i versity offers courses on almost all the
curre nt branches of scientific fields a nd acc o nmodates students
from ove r 25 countri es.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE
The obj ectives of th e conference are
- A r eal tribute to a scientist is t o ofter him a flurishing
picture of the state of the art of the ideas introduced and
enriched by him. This confe rence a ims at such a tribute to
Prof essor C.R. Rao .
The availability of fast computing facilities have qiven a
new twist
to Data Analysis. Brinqing together theoretical
statisticians and practical data analysts, the confe re nce attempts to achieve guidlines for new directions in both theory
and practic e .
- The various branches of Statistical Inference have grown into
major areas of interest in their own merit. The conference
plans to review the recent developments in these areas.

- Software for Data Analysis is important for beth applied sta tisticians a nd the users in the different fiel ds of science
and techno logy . This confe rence proposes to give an opportunity to statistical software developers to demonstrate their
products .

Umfrage zur Griindung einer Schweizerischen Vereinigung für Statistik:
Graphische Darstellung einiger Er:-gebnisse

Um die Gründung einer Schweizerischer. Gesellscha.lt für Sta.tisLik vorzubereiten,
wurde im Juli 1987 eine Umfrage durchgelührt.
Sie soUte Aufschluss geben über
Schwerpunkte in der Arbeit einer solen en Organisation.
Von ca. 350 VerJ;chickten Fragebogen ka.men 96 zurück. Die Aussagen sind also
nicht reprisenta.tlv fûr die Gesamthcit der Befra.gten, sondern ge"b en im Grossen und
Ga.nzen die Ecwa.rtungen von Personen wied er, die an einer Vereiwgung interessiert
sind, a.Jso die Meinungen von potentiellen Mitgliedem.
Die Antworten au{ die einzelnen Fragen wurden bisher nur getrennt a.usgezâhlt. Die
Vorbereitungsgruppe hat ihre Energien nicht in eine a.ufwendigere multivaria.te Analyse
gestetkt. Dagegen soli die Gelegenheit benützt werden, eine moglichst informative
graphische Da.rstellung zu wâhlen. Die folgenden Überlegungen lûhrten zur gewih.lten
Darstellungsart;
1. Datenstruktur: Es gab bei den unten a.usgewerteten Frat;'ltl immer fiinf geord-
nete Antwort miiglichkeiten, die von •wïchtig" bis "unwichlig" gingen.
2. Die wesentliche Information ist in einem geeigneten MiHelwert über die
gegebenen Antworten zu li.nden. Diese [nforma.tion ist umso gewichtiger, je mehr
Antworten gegeben wurden.
3. Es sind auch detail1iertere Angaben nützlich: Ein Mittelwert, der sich aus
vielen kla.ren Zustimmo11gen und àhnlich vielen Ablehnungen zusammensetzt, ist
a.nden; zu werten a.ls cin Mittelwert der Gleichgültiglceit.
4. Der Vergleich der Ergebnisse für verschiedene Fragen ist sin.nvoU und soUte
erleichtert werden. (Welche Aufga.be wird als wichtiger be•uteilt?)
In der gewâhlten Da.tstellung wird die wesentliche Information prominent darge-
stellt durch einen ausgefüllten Kreis, dessen mittlere .x:-Koordlnate ci !lem lnterpolierten
Median über die gegebenen Antwortea enupricht. Die y-Koordina.te ist "Unwesentlich;
sie entspricht der Hal[te der gegebenen Antworten. Die x-Adue ist besser geeignet für
den Vergleich von verschiedenen Fragen, da die Darstellungen untereinander zu stehen
kommen. -Der Radius des Kreiser; ist proportional zur Anzahl gegebener Antworten.
Nicht-Antworlen bei den Fragen 2 und 3 sind nicht neutra.!, sondern interpretierbar
ais Ausdruck dessen , dass die entsprechende Aufgabe resp. der Bereich a.ls unwichtig
angesehen wird.

Details sollen hier der Küne halbe weggelassen werden.
Die gewahlte Darstellung ist nic.ht gebrâuchlich und beno\igt daher die vorhergehende Etklarung. Da.s ist ein Nac.hteil. Andererseits soli sie zeigen, da.ss mit ein wenig
Phanta.sie in!ormativere Darstellungen ais die üblichen
mô~ch
5ind. Die graphische
Beschreibuog von Daten ist eine K unst wie die Didaktik - es gibt nicllt nur glückliche
und weniger glückliclte Einfalle, sondern auch pri.Wpielle Überlegungen und hilfreiche
Theorie.
Nun wile es an der Zeit, die Ergebnisse der Umfrage zu kommentieren. Dies
môcbte ich den Leserinoen und Lesern oder besser den Betrac.hterinnen und Betrachtero
überlassen.
Die Fngen sind tu diesem Zweck unten uochmals aufgefiihrt.
Der
vorliegende Beitrag ist aho nicht als vollstândige Auswertuog der Umfrage, sondern
ais kleine methodische Betrachtung zu verstehen.

La première idée, réalisable assez facilement, serait d'instituer dans le bulletin de
notre association une rubrique:
Logiciels et programmes statistiques
dans laquelle les utilisateurs développeraient les avantages et les inconvénients de
tel ou tel programme. Ce serait aussi l'occasion de signaler certaines erreurs ou
imperfections de ces programmes. Par ailleurs, elle pourrait faire !'objet de
conseils et d'échanges d'idées en matière de calculs statistiques complexes.

Vor der letzten Versammlung, am 24. Juni in Bern, haben sich einige wenige --allzu
wenige -- zu einer ersten Besprechung über dieses Thema zusammengesetzt. Eine
Einladung :tu dieser Zusammenkunft hatten nur jene erhalten, die in der
seinerzeitigen Umfrage Weiterbildung ais eine wichtige Aufgabe bezeichnet hatten
-- also wohl nicht alle. die an diesem Thema generell interessiert sind. Wir hoffen
deshalb• auf diesem Wege noch weltere lnteressenten zu finden, vor allem
jemanden, der mit Schwung diese Arbeitsgruppe Jeiten mochte.

Unterdessen wollen wir mit einem ersten Schr-itt dennoch beginnen. Es gibt ln der
Schweiz etUche Organisationen, die bereits heute Weiterbildung in Statistik
anbieten, meistens auf einem bestimmten Sachgebiet, z.B. in der
Qualitiitskontrolle. Wir miichten, im Sinne der Forderung der Zusammenarbeit
unter den bestehenden lnstitutionen, die in unserem Zweckartikel steht, eine Liste

for Statistics and Computing", edited by W.F. Eddy and
S.E. Fienberg (beth at Carnegie-Mellon University).
