Bitche,
une ville touristique
labellisée
Bourgade d’environ 5 500 habitants, la Ville de Bitche s’inscrit
dans un cadre paysager urbain
entouré de toutes parts de forêts.
Labellisée « Station Verte de
Vacances » et « Plus Beaux
Détours de France », la ville de
Bitche fière de ses 4 fleurs est
aussi couronnée du Grand Prix
National du Fleurissement (2007)
et de la Fleur d’Or (2010), distinction suprême.
Surplombant la ville, l’imposante
Citadelle fortifiée par Vauban puis
par Cormontaigne, a traversé les
guerres. Sa visite se fait à travers
un parcours scénographique qui
retrace la résistance du Commandant Teyssier et de ses hommes,
lors du siège de 1870.
A Bitche, les jardiniers municipaux
exultent leur passion à travers
des créations et aménagements
floraux d’exception.
Le Jardin pour la Paix créé au
pied de la Citadelle regorge de
compositions florales ludiques et
d’expressions horticoles mêlées
de traditions locales.
Les Jardins en Troc disséminés
dans la ville sont l’occasion de flâner et de découvrir les commerces
et le patrimoine autrement. Sans
oublier le plus insolite, les nids de
cigogne plantés sur certains édifices de la ville.
Face à la Citadelle, sur la colline
du Kindelberg, le Golf de 18 et 9
trous de renommée internationale
est un remarquable parc qui se

L’étang de Hasselfurth et son
village de vacances constituent

Als kleine Stadt mit etwa

Hoch über der Stadt liegend, hat
die eindrucksvolle Zitadelle, von
Vauban und später von Cormontaigne gebaut und befestigt, alle
Kriege durchquert.
Ihr Rundgang führt sie durch
eine landschaftlich schöne Strecke, die den Widerstand des
Oberst Teyssier und seiner Leute während der Belagerung von
1870 schildert.
Die Stadtgärtner bringen mit
Begeisterung ihre Leidenschaft,
durch ausserordentliche Schöpfungen und Blumeneinrichtungen, zum Ausdruck.
Der Garten des Friedens, am
Fuß der Festung errichtet, ist
mit spielerischen Blumenzusammenstellungen und traditionellen
Gartenbauausdrücke überfüllt.
Die Tauschgärten, in der Stadt
verstreut, sind Gelegenheit zum
Bummeln, und die Geschäfte
und das historische Erbe laden
zum Entdecken ein. Nicht zu
vergessen sind die außergewöhnlichen Storchennester auf
den Dächern mancher Bauwerke.
Gegenüber der Zitadelle, auf
dem «Kindelberg», befindet sich
ein international bekannter Golfplatz mit 18 und 9 Loch, der je
nach Jahreszeit sich mit allen
Farben schmückt.
Der Hasselfurther Weiher und
sein Feriendorf bildet die Forstseite der Stadt. Dieser reizvolle
Ort ist mit einem Netz von Fußwegen, Reiterpfade und Fahrradwege durchkreuzt, die das
ganze Jahr benutzbar sind.
Für die Liebhaber von Abenteuer bietet sich der Multifreizeitpark «TEPACAP» für akrobatische Geschicklichkeitsspiele

La
Citadelle
Véritable chef d’œuvre de l’art
militaire, la Citadelle est le plus
important site historique du Pays
de Bitche.
Le Pays de Bitche a été par le
passé, le théâtre de nombreuses
guerres et invasions, et la Citadelle de Bitche en fut une pièce
maitresse.
Suedois, lorrains,
allemands, français, personne ne
parvint à prendre possession de
la puissante place forte.
En 1680, le château fort laisse
place à la Citadelle dessinée par
Vauban.
Démantelée en 1697, la Citadelle
de Bitche est reconstruite par
l’Architecte Cormontaigne à partir
de 1740.
La visite :
Muni d’un casque audio-phonique, la visite de la Citadelle se
fait à travers ses souterrains et
son parcours spectacle qui permet de revivre l’héroïque résistance de la Citadelle de Bitche
face aux troupes allemandes de
1870 à 1871.
Sur le plateau supérieur de la citadelle, le musée historique « Des
Hommes dans la Guerre de 1870 »
abrite des images d’archives,
des collections d’armes et uniformes qui témoignent du vécu
des hommes sur les champs de
bataille. La Chapelle Vauban tout
récemment restaurée accueille
aujourd’hui le Plan-relief original
de Bitche, maquette exceptionnelle datant de 1794 et classée
Monument Historique.

Wahrhaftiges militärisches Kunstwerk die Festung von Bitche. Sie
ist der wichtigste und bekannteste
Höhepunkt im Bitcherland. In der
Vergangenheit ist das Bitcherland
Schauplatz zahlreicher Kriege
und Invasionen gewesen und die
Zitadelle galt dabei als Hauptstück. Ob Schweden, Lothringer,
Deutsche oder Franzosen, niemand konnte die mächtige Zitadelle erobern.
Es war 1680 als sich die Burg,
nach den Plänen von Vauban, zur
Zitadelle umwandelte.
Im Jahr 1697 zerstört, wurde sie
von dem Architekten Cormontaigne ab 1740 wieder aufgebaut.
Die Besichtigung:
Mit Kopfhörer ausgestattet führt
der Besuch durch die unterirdischen Gänge der Festung, dieser
Schaurundgang erlaubt es den
heldenhaften Widerstand der Zitadelle gegenüber der deutschen
Truppen wieder zu erleben.
Auf
der
obersten
Fläche
der
Festung
verbirgt
das
historische
Museum
«Männer im Krieg 1870» Archivbilder, Waffensammlungen und
Uniformen, die von dem Leben
der Kämpfer auf den Schlachtfeldern erzählen.

A true military master piece, the
Citadel is the most important
historical site in Pays de Bitche.
In the past, Pays de Bitche was
the setting for many wars and
invasions of which the castle on
the site of Bitche Citadel was a
centrepiece. The Swedish, the
Duchy of Lorraine, the French and
the Germans, no one was able to
overthrow this stronghold.
In 1680, the castle was replaced
by the Citadel designed by
Vauban. It was dismantled in
1697, but rebuilt in 1740 by the
architect Cormontaigne.

you through the underground
passages allowing you to relive
the resistance against the
Germans (1870-1871).
On the platform of the Citadel,
the historical museum «The Men
during the 1870 War» has records
and photos, and a collection of

Le Jardin
pour la Paix
Pour exorciser les sanglantes batailles des siècles passés, le chemin de ronde du pied de la Citadelle
est devenu le Jardin pour la Paix,
extraordinaire lieu de créations horticoles éphémères et ludiques.
Les jardiniers y exposent au gré des
saisons, leur savoir faire et leur inventivité en associant savamment le
verre et le cristal aux végétaux, le fer
forgé aux graminées.
Le Jardin pour la Paix fait partie
du réseau international des « Jardins

Die Bitcher Gärtner zeigen, je nach
Jahreszeit, ihre Kunst, ihr Können,
ihre Kreativität, indem sie Glas und
Kristall mit Pflanzen, Schmiedeeisen
und Gräser gekonnt vereinigen.
Der «Garten des Friedens» gehört zum internationalen Netz der

Les vestiges de la Ligne Maginot rappellent l’importance stratégique du Pays de Bitche.
Au lendemain du premier conflit mondial, André Maginot, Ministre de la Guerre décide de fortifier les frontières
du pays et définit comme prioritaires quatre sites du Nord-Est de la France, dont le Simserhof à Siersthal.
Le Fort Casso
Avec ses 3 blocs de surface (tous
visitables) dont 2 de combats, cet
ouvrage d’infanterie de la Ligne
Maginot était le gardien du plateau
de Rohrbach.
A l’occasion de sa visite, vous
découvrirez une véritable petite ville,
en parfait état de fonctionnement,
enfouie sous 25 mètres de calcaire
avec tous les équipements nécessaires à la vie des 173 hommes de
l’ouvrage.

techniques de fabrication.

Dorf Soucht, Hauptstadt des lothringischen Holzschuhes am Anfang des 20ten Jahrhundert, weiterhin seine Tradition.
Das Dorf zählte mitten des letzten
Jahrhunderts mehr als 40 Holzschuhmacher.
At the start of the 20th century,
Soucht, a small picturesque village
nestled in the Vosges du Nord,
in a valley surrounded by forest,
was the capital of clog making in
Lorraine. After the glass industry
stopped production at the start of
the 18th century because of a lack
of fuel, this little village specialised
in clog making.

Vergangenheit zu vertiefen.

Moulin d’Eschviller
Dans un cadre naturel remarquable,
découvrez un ancien moulin et
revivez les techniques de travail
des meuniers et des scieurs avant
l’arrivée de l’électricité.
L’ancien moulin à grain : il abrite
aujourd’hui une exposition intitulée
« Le pain, le grain, le moulin » où
l’on peut découvrir tous les secrets
des meuniers d’antan. Entraînée par
une grande roue à aube, une meule
s’actionne sous vos yeux et produit
de la farine comme au milieu du
20ème siècle.
Le moulin à scier : la scierie
pédagogique jouxte le moulin à
grains et permet de suivre l’évolution des techniques de sciage
du bois mises en œuvre dans les
moulins à scier les planches du
17 au 20ème siècle. De très nombreux outils y sont présentés.
Le rucher pédagogique : la visite
de ce site se poursuit par le tout
nouveau rucher pédagogique qui
présente les secrets et étapes de
fabrication du miel, la vie sociale des
abeilles et leur rôle écologique.
Sur place également, un sentier
botanique ainsi qu’un restaurant.

Nestled in the green valley of the
Schwalb, Eschviller Mill is dedicated
to man and the environment. In a
remarkable setting, you can observe
the techniques of the millers in the
old flour mill and sawmill before
electricity was even thought of.
Die ehemalige Getreidemühle: sie
beherbergt heute eine Ausstellung
namens «Brot, Korn, Mühle», in der
man alle Geheimnisse der Müller
von einst endecken kann.
Angetrieben von einem großen
Schauffelrad bewegt sich unter ihren
Augen ein Mühlstein und stellt Mehl
her, wie mitten im 20. Jahrhundert.
Die Sägemühle: das pädagogische
Sägewerk liegt gleich neben der
Kornmühle und erlaubt die technische Entwicklung des Brettersägens
zu verfolgen, so wie es vom 17. bis
20. Jahrhundert üblich war.
Das pädagogische Bienenhaus:
die Führung führt weiter zu dem neuen Bienenhaus. Dort erfährt man die
Geheimnisse zur Herstellung des
Honigs, das soziale Leben der Bienen und ihre Rolle in der Ökologie.
Am Ort gibt es auch einen botanischen Pfad und ein Restaurant.

from the 17th to the 20th century.
Numerous tools of the trade can be
seen such as simple individual saws,
mechanical saws and old chain saws
for cutting trees and blanks.
The educational apiary: a visit to
the new educational apiary is a must.
It presents the secrets of the different
stages of honey making, the social
life of a bee and their ecological
effect on the environment.
There is also a nature trail and a
restaurant on the site.

Crystal country and the famous glass
C’est de la conjonction de ses richesses naturelles qu’est né le trésor du Pays de Bitche :
le cristal, grâce au sable du grès rose, au bois et à la fougère des forêts. Au 16ème siècle, des
gentilshommes verriers itinérants se fixent au Pays de Bitche pour donner naissance à quelques lieux
de production prestigieux : Saint-Louis, Goetzenbruck, Lemberg, Meisenthal.

Meisenthal est considéré comme
le berceau du verre Art Nouveau
et c’est dans les bâtiments d’une
ancienne verrerie où Emile Gallé
fit son apprentissage de 1866 à
1870, qu’est installé aujourd’hui le
Musée du Verre et du Cristal, labellisé Musée de France.

Ce musée retrace l’histoire de
l’industrie verrière locale depuis le

La tradition des boules de Noël
La légende raconte qu’en 1858,
une grande sécheresse priva de
fruits les Vosges du Nord et les
sapins de Noël ne pouvaient être
décorés. C’est alors qu’un souffleur de verre imagina souffler des
boules en verre, créant une tradition qui s’est rependue par la suite
dans le monde entier.
En 1999, la fabrication des boules
de Noël en verre a été relancée par
le Centre International d’Art Verrier
qui propose chaque année de nouvelles créations, en plus de la ligne
traditionnelle.

de l’ancienne verrerie, la Halle Verrière accueille aujourd’hui des expositions d’artistes contemporains

Meisenthal wird als die Wiege des
Art Nouveau Glasses betrachtet.
In den Gebäuden einer ehemaligen Glasherstellung, wo Emile Gallé seine Lehre von 1866 bis 1870
machte, befindet sich heute das
Haus des Glases und Kristalls, ausgezeichnet als «Musée de France».
Das Glas- und Kristallmuseum
Dieses Museum schildert die Geschichte der örtlichen Glasindustrie
seit dem 16. Jahrhundert.
Zusätzlich zur Präsentation dieses
traditionellen Handwerks ermöglicht
die Ausstellung einige Meisterwerke
berühmter Künstler zu betrachten, so
wie Daum, Gallé und Lalique, deren
Vergangenheit mit Meisenthal verbunden ist.
Die ehemalige Schleiferei, heute
das Internationale Glaskunst-Zentrum (Eintitt frei) zeigt zeitgenössische Schöpfungen. Glas wird dort
bearbeitet und heiß unter den Augen
des Publikums geblasen. Der angrenzende Laden bietet den Verkauf
der Werke von jungen, vielversprechenden Talent-Designer an, sowie
die berühmten Glasweihnachtskugeln.
Die Tradition der Weihnachtskugeln: Im Jahre 1858, so erzählt die
Legende, gab es aufgrund einer
großen Dürre kein Obst, um die
Weihnachtsbäume zu schmücken.
Ein Glasbläser aus der Region kam
auf die Idee, Glaskugeln zu blasen.
Sie sollten die fehlenden Früchte
ersetzen. So entstand die Tradition
der Glaskugeln. Die in der Region
hergestellten Weihnachtskugeln verkauften sich weltweit. Erst mit dem
Aufkommen der Kunststoffkugeln
musste die Produktion eingestellt
werden.
1999 beschloss das internationale
Glaskunstzentrum in Meisenthal, die
Produktion wieder aufzunehmen. Jedes Jahr zur Weihnachtszeit präsentiert dieses Glaskunstzentrum neue
Kreationen, sowie die traditionellen
Kugeln.
Die Halle Verrière
Die „Halle Verrière“ ist in einem Gebäude der ehemaligen Glasfabrik
von Meisenthal untergebracht. Diese
Glashalle beherbergt heute Ausstellungen von zeitgenössischen Künstlern und ist eine Bühne für Musik,
Konzerte und Straßentheater. Ein

Des collines boisées du Pays de Bitche émergent encore les vestiges de châteaux forts datant
du Moyen-Age, témoins du passé tumultueux de la région. Certains d’entre eux sont visitables,
d’autres, non sécurisés, sont visibles de l’extérieur.
La ruine
du Château
de Ramstein
à Baerenthal

Construit à la fin du 13ème siècle
par les sires de Falkenstein à la
demande de l’évêque de Strasbourg, le château de Ramstein
était destiné à contrôler voire
interdire l’accès de la Vallée de la
Zinsel. Mais au cours du 14ème
siècle, les seigneurs de Ramstein transformèrent leur château
en véritable repère de brigands,
pillant et rançonnant la région
entière.
Devant cette situation, les
strasbourgeois aidés de leurs
alliés bernois organisèrent une
expédition punitive contre la
forteresse. A coup d’engins de
guerre et de boulets de pierres,
le château de Ramstein fut
entièrement détruit en 1335.
Les vestiges subsistants de ce
château ont été sécurisés et rouverts au public en 2010.
Des passerelles et panneaux
explicatifs permettent de découvrir quelques éléments architecturaux du château au sommet
duquel, une table d’orientation
balaye le panorama de Baerenthal.

Auf Wunsch des Bischofs von
Straßburg am Ende des 13.
Jahrhunderts von den Herren
Falkenstein gebaut, sollte die
Burg Ramstein das Tal der Zinsel
überwachen. Im 14. Jahrhundert
jedoch verwandelten die Herren
von Ramstein ihre Burg in eine
wahre Räuberhöhle, von der die
ganze Gegend erpresst und geplündert wurde.
Auf Grund dieser Lage organisierten die Straßburger mit Hilfe
ihrer Berner Verbündeten eine
Strafexpedition gegen die Festung: mit Hilfe von Kriegsgeräten und Steinkugeln wurde das
Schloss 1335 völlig zerstört.
Die Überreste des Schlosses
wurden abgesichert und 2010
wieder für die Öffentlichkeit geöffnet.

Castle at Baerenthal
At the end of the 13th century,
the Bishop of Strasbourg ordered
the nobles of Falkenstein to build
the Ramstein castle to control
the access to the Zinsel valley
but during the 14th century the
Lords of Ramstein transform
the castle into a veritable den of
thieves, looting and extorting the
entire region.
In 1335, faced with this dilemma,
troops from Strasbourg along
side their allies from Berne
attacked the Ramstein with
siege machinery and catapults,
destroying it completely.
The ruins were secured for
safety measures and it reopened
in 2010.

Le château du Falkenstein à Philippsbourg : C’est le plus important
château fort du Pays de Bitche. Il
a été construit au début du 12ème
siècle par Pierre, Comte de Lutzelbourg, pour protéger ses possessions en forêt Sainte de Haguenau.
Occupé par la famille de Falkenstein jusqu’à leur extinction, il passa
ensuite aux Comtes de Hanau-Lichtenberg. La légende raconte que le
château brûla 5 jours et 5 nuits touché par la foudre d’un violent orage
en 1564.
Le château de Waldeck à Eguelshardt : Son donjon caractéristique
reste le seul vestige du château de
Waldeck érigé au 13ème siècle par
les Comtes de Lichtenberg.
Le Grand Arnsbourg à Baerenthal :
Construit au 12ème siècle, le Grand
Arnsbourg fut détruit au cours de la
guerre de Trente ans. Subsistent les
vestiges du donjon, des murailles et
du chemin de ronde (accès momentanément interdit).

Die Ruinen des Falkenstein, Waldeck und
Grand Arnsbourg
Die Burg Falkenstein in Philippsbourg: Dies ist die wichtigste Burg
der Region Bitche. Sie ist am Anfang des 12. Jahrhunderts von
Graf Pierre von Lutzelbourg erbaut
worden, um seine Besitztümer im
Wald von Hagenau zu schützen.
Von der Familie Falkenstein bis zu
deren Aussterben besetzt, ging diese Burg dann an den Grafen von
Hanau-Lichtenberg. Die Legende
besagt, daß die Burg fünf Tage und
fünf Nächte brannte, getroffen vom
Blitz eines gewaltigen Gewitters im
Jahre 1564.
Die Burg Waldeck in Eguelshardt: Der charakteristische Turm
ist alles was von der Burg Waldeck
übrig blieb, welche im 13. Jahrhundert vom Grafen von Lichtenberg
errichtet wurde.
Der Grand Arnsbourg in Bärenthal: Im 12. Jahrhunder gebaut,
wurde er während des 30-jährigen
Krieges zerstört. Es stehen heute
noch die Überreste des Bergfriedes, der Mauern und des Wehrgangs (Zutritt aktuell verboten).
Das Fort Saint-Sébastien, errichtet zwischen 1850 und 1853, verhinderte dank seiner Befestigung
jede Annäherung von den Bayern
während der Belagerung der Stadt
1870-1871.

important castle in Pays de Bitche.
It was built at the start of the
12th century by Pierre, Count of
Lutzelbourg to protect his properties
in the forest «Sainte de Haguenau».
It was occupied by the Falkenstein
family until their descendants died
out and later became the property of
the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg.
The legend says that the castle
burned for 5 days and nights when
lightening struck during a storm in
1564.

chapelles, édifices sacrés ou petits calvaires construits dès le 15ème siècle sont bien conservés
et encore visibles.
L’Ossuaire
de Schorbach

Situé dans le cimetière à proximité de l’Eglise, l’ossuaire de
Schorbach est l’un des vestiges
d’architecture médiévale les
plus intéressants de la région.
Ancienne paroisse mère de
Bitche, l’ossuaire de Schorbach
aurait été construit aux environs de 1125. L’architecture de
l’édifice actuel daterait du 15ème
siècle.
La belle colonnade romane
(chacune étant d’un style différent) témoigne du soin extraordinaire consacré à cette
époque à la construction des
ossuaires. L’ossuaire est rempli
de plus de 100 m3 d’ossements
et de centaines de crânes. Il
est l’un des premiers édifices
du Pays de Bitche à avoir été
déclaré Monument Historique
en 1889.

Region Bitche das als historisches Denkmal im Jahre 1889
anerkannt wurde.

Einige Kilometer von Bitche entfernt, in dem kleinen Dorf Sturzelbronn, findet man eine ehemalige
Zisterzienserabtei die im 12. Jahrhundert gegründet wurde und während der Französische Revolution
zerstört wurde. Es blieben nur noch
einige Überreste bestehen.
Die Statue des heiligen Bernards,
Gründer der Abtei: Sie wurde 1935
zum Gedenken des 800. Geburtstages der Gründung der Abtei im Jahre 1135 in Sturzelbronn aufgestellt.
Das große Portal, das während
des dreißigjährigen Krieges zerstört und im 18. Jahrhundert wieder
aufgebaut wurde, symbolisiert die
Macht der ehemaligen Abtei.
Der Steinkalender: er gehört zu
den seltesten und interessantesten
Überresten der Abtei.
Einzigartig in Frankreich erlaubt
dieser Kalender die Zeit in Wochen und Tagen zu zählen zwischen

La Chapelle Sainte-Vérène (protectrice des animaux domestiques) est un haut-lieu spirituel
du Pays de Bitche. Elle aurait été
édifiée entre 1400 et 1500, avant
d’avoir été agrandie plusieurs
fois.
Lieu de pèlerinage d’actualité,
l’intérieur de la Chapelle abrite
plusieurs statues de Saints dont
celle de Sainte-Vérène représentée avec un peigne à la main.

ein Wallfahrtsort des Bitcherlandes. Man schätzt das sie zwischen 1400 und 1500 errichtet

In der Kapelle findet man mehrere Statuen, unter anderem die
der Heiligen Verena, dargestellt
mit einem Kamm in der Hand.

“Our Lady of Mercy” and “the Virgin
with the Cape” was built in gothic
style and has a sundial on its main
facade. In the sanctuary stands a
wooden statue dating back to the
18th century sculptured entirely
from the trunk of a lime tree. This
sculpture represents the Virgin
sheltering 14 characters in the tails
of her coat: 2 donors kneeling at
the foot of the Virgin and 12 figures
representing the different social
classes (gentry, clergy, and estates
of realm).

Le sentier de découverte de
la tourbière de l’étang de Hanau :
à l’étang de Hanau, un sentier
aménagé sur caillebotis et jalonné
de panneaux explicatifs permet de
comprendre la rareté et la fragilité
de ce milieu naturel. De mai à septembre, on y observe des plantes
carnivores, toutes sortes d’airelles
ou libellules gracieuses. Le sentier
se poursuit en forêt avec la découverte des principaux arbres locaux.

up on duckboards and is lined with
explanatory signs to understand
the rare and fragile nature of this
natural environment. From May to

the main local tree species.

Pays de Bitche vous propose la location de vélos à assistance électrique.
Tarifs : 9.50 € la ½ journée et 19 € la journée. 35 € pour 2 jours consécutifs puis 15 €
