Von Dezember 2014 bis April 2015 feiern
St. Moritz, das Engadin und die Schweiz
das Jubiläum 150 Jahre Wintertourismus.
Die Vielfalt von Sport und Lifestyle bilden
die Basis für den erfolgreichen Tourismus,
dies auch in Zukunft. Mit dem Jubiläum
wollen St. Moritz und das Engadin ein
starkes Signal an die Schweiz und an das
Ausland senden: einerseits, um die Pioniertaten der Wintertourismus-Gründer zu
würdigen, andererseits, um das Bewusstsein und den Mut für die Weiterentwicklung
der Tourismusangebote zu fördern.
From December 2014 to April 2015,
St. Moritz, the Engadin and Switzerland are
celebrating 150 years of winter tourism. The
diversity of sports and lifestyle that is to be
found here forms the basis for successful
tourism, both now and in the future.
St. Moritz and the Engadin will be using the
anniversary celebrations to send a strong
signal across Switzerland and to countries
abroad, on the one hand to commemorate
the pioneering achievements of the founders
of winter tourism, and on the other, to raise
awareness of existing tourism products and
promote their further development.

Der Ursprung: die Wette
It all began with a wager
St. Moritz gilt als Wiege des Wintertourismus. Die Legende besagt, dass dieser hier im
Jahre 1864 geboren worden ist. Alles begann
mit der waghalsigen Wette:
St. Moritz is regarded as the birthplace of
winter tourism. Indeed, legend has it that
winter tourism began here in 1864. And that
it all began with a rather daring wager:
«Der Winter im Engadin sei voller Sonnenschein und viel angenehmer als jener in
England. Um dies selbst zu erleben, lade er
sie in sein Hotel ein. Sollten sie nicht zufrieden sein, übernehme er auch die Reisekosten. Diesen Vorschlag machte der
Engadiner Hotelier Johannes Badrutt im
Herbst 1864 den letzten verbliebenen
englischen Sommergästen.
“Summer tourism was already in full swing
when, in autumn 1864, the Engadin hotelier
Johannes Badrutt made a bet with four
English guests that even in winter they
would be able to enjoy the mild Engadin
sunshine in their shirt sleeves, sitting on his
hotel terrace. If not, he pledged to cover
their travel costs. And if winter in St. Moritz
did appeal to them, he would invite them to
stay on as his guests for as long as they
wished.
Die Engländer kannten den kalten und
feuchten Winter insbesondere in London und
konnten sich beim besten Willen nicht vorstellen, dass es in den Schweizer Alpen anders sein sollte. Sie kamen dennoch zur
Weihnachtszeit ins Oberengadin – und
reisten erst nach Ostern wieder heim: braungebrannt, erholt und glücklich. Sie waren
die ersten Wintertouristen der Alpen und sie
entdeckten eine neue Welt: die weissen
Winterferien. Der Wintertourismus in den
Alpen war lanciert.»
The English guests were only familiar with
cold and damp winters, especially in London,
so even with the best will in the world they
could not imagine that it could be any different in the Swiss Alps. Nevertheless, they
turned up in the Upper Engadin in time for
the Christmas season – and stayed right
through until after Easter, returning home
tanned, rested and happy. They became the
first winter tourists of the Alps and discovered a completely new world: winter holidays in the snow. And winter tourism in the
Alps was here to stay.”

A photo point has been set up in the
Serletta multi-storey car park in St. Moritz.
Here, visitors can have their photo taken
along with the motif by renowned Berlin
illustrator, Christoph Niemann. The motif was
designed specifically for the “150 Years of
Winter Tourism” celebrations. Share your
anniversary picture with your friends on

Am ersten Dezember-Wochenende findet in
St. Moritz die Eröffnungsveranstaltung mit
Team-Wettkämpfen in verschiedenen
Schneesportarten statt. Die traditionellen
Veranstaltungen «Snowsports Opening» und
«City-Race» werden die Grundlage bilden.
Am Abend finden im Dorf Konzerte und ein
Show Act über 150 Jahre Wintertourismus
statt.

These will be based on the traditional Snowsports Opening and City Race events. In the

In winter 1889/90, Christian Mathis from
St. Moritz invented the bobsleigh, on which
contemporary designs are based. To mark the
125th anniversary of the sport of bobsleigh,
the Omega Monobob World Series Final will
be held at the Olympia Bob Run in St. MoritzCelerina.

Oberstufenklassen Unterrichtsstunden zur
Tourismusgeschichte des Oberengadins an.
Ziel ist es, bei den Schülern die Zusammenhänge im Tourismus aufzuzeigen und sie für
dieses wichtige Standbein des Oberengadins
zu sensibilisieren.

and to raise awareness of this important
mainstay for the Upper Engadin.
