A loveable lion says:
”Welcome to the 2006 FIFA* World Cup in Germany.”
For the second time in history Germany will open its doors for a great football
tournament. It will be the place where people from all over the world will be
welcomed by friends. The striking slogan of the organizers is: Die Welt zu Gast bei
Freunden.
There was and still is a lot of work to do.
Stadiums were built, accommodation and
transportation had to be improved. And the
FIFA had to find a symbol or mascot for this
important event. So Goleo, a loveable lion,
was created as the official mascot of the
2006 FIFA World Cup. This smart lion appears
for example on covers of magazines, in shop
windows and on screens. He is alive, talks
and thinks. He combines the looks of Lothar
Matthäus, the elegance of Diego Maradona
and the all-round ability of Oliver Bierhoff - so
the brash young lion says of himself in his first interview with a wink and a grin. And
naturally he has his own opinions. Goleo has set himself one major task: He wants the
Cup to be a huge, joyful and unforgettable party. As the “King of Parties” he will
spend his time celebrating, singing and dancing with fans from all over the world for
four whole weeks. Just now he is even producing a CD.
Goleo’s constant companion is Pille, the talking
football. The ball wants to serve as an object of
desire for 22 football artists - even if they kick him for
90 minutes.
Pille and Goleo are an unequal pair. Pille is a right
chatterbox who wears his heart on his sleeve. He has
to accept the fact that Goleo tends to steal the
limelight most of the time. But the lion is a good pal
and allows his friend to be a star now and then. Both
share their interest in the Football Cup as the
“biggest party of the world”. So they are the ideal candidates to represent the FIFA
WORLD CUP.

Read the text below about the history of football.
What are the three most interesting bits of information for you?
Write down in complete German sentences. Use worksheet 2.
Is football really an ancient game?
Peter, 11 yrs.
Yes, that’s true. Did you know that it was played in China
more than 2000 years ago? A similar game called “Tsu
Chu” (“Kick the Ball”) existed there. Bamboo poles served
as goals. And around 400 BC in Greece, where ball games
were an essential part of life, they also played a form of
football . They called it “Pheninda” – kicking, running and
handling the ball.

An English-speaking guest in your family
There is a big sports event for young people in your town and one of the guests stays
with your family during that time.
Guest:
Hallo, my name is John. Are you my host family for the next few days?
1.
Bejahen und begrüßen Sie Ihren Gast, stellen Sie sich kurz vor und
fragen Sie ihn, wie es ihm geht.
John:
I’m fine, thanks. Nice to meet you, too.
2.
Fragen Sie Ihren Gesprächspartner, wie seine Reise nach Deutschland
war.
John:
The bus trip was OK, but it was a bit too long.
3.
Schlagen Sie vor, gemeinsam eine Tasse Tee zu trinken.
John:
Thank you, that’s a good idea. But could I have a cold drink instead,
please.
4.
Bieten Sie Ihrem Gast ein Glas Orangensaft an und fragen Sie, ob er
auch etwas essen möchte.
John:
No, thanks. I’ve had some sandwiches on the bus and I’m not hungry at
the moment, only a bit tired.
5.
Sagen Sie Ihrem Gast, dass Sie ihm jetzt sein Zimmer zeigen werden,
wo er sich dann ausruhen kann.
John:
That’s very nice of you, thank you.
6.
Erkundigen Sie sich, ob Ihr Gast noch Fragen hat.
John:
Everything is just fine, thank you so much.
7.
