Heritage
Hungary is an ideal holiday destination for refreshing body
and soul. This unique country is blessed with an abundance
of thermal water having one of the largest thermal and
medicinal water reserves and the largest thermal bathing
lake in the world. The combination of its well established
bathing culture, excellent and modern facilities ensures
that everyone can find what they are seeking.
Whether you’re after relaxation, refreshment or recovery,
Hungary can’t fail to meet your needs.
The Romans heralded the first golden age of ‘spa’ in
Hungary, and the remains of their bath complexes are still
to be seen in Óbuda. The spa culture was revived after the
Ottoman invasion, the Turks constructing a number of
bathhouses – some still functioning today – to make use of
the thermal springs in Buda. In the 19th century,
advances in deep-drilling techniques and medical science
provided the springboard for a further leap in bathing
culture. Grand spas such as Gellért, Lukács, Margaret
Island, and Széchényi reflect this resurgence in popularity.
Balneotherapy – the use of thermal water for medical
treatments – continues to be an effective therapy. It is now
complemented with more popular wellness treatments,
which have been introduced from all corners of the globe.
What makes Hungary unique, however, is the atmosphere
of history and tradition to be found in its spas.

Ungarn ist das ideale Urlaubsland, um Leib und Seele
wieder ins Lot zu bringen. Hier befindet sich eine der
reichsten Thermal- und Heilwasserreserven und der
größte Thermalbadesee der Welt, und seine traditionelle
Badekultur in Verbindung mit Ausstattung auf dem neusten

Sie Entspannung oder Erfrischung suchen oder sich erholen
wollen, Ungarn wird ganz bestimmt Ihren Erwartungen

Der erste „Boom“ der Heilbäder in Ungarn war zu Zeiten
der Römer. Die Überreste ihrer Badekomplexe sind bis
heute noch in Óbuda zu sehen. Die Heilbadkultur wurde
während der türkischen Okkupation wieder belebt, die
viele Badehäuser um die Heilquellen von Buda bauten.
Einige von ihnen funktionieren noch immer. Durch die
Fortschritte in der Tiefbohrung und der Heilkunde gab es
im 19. Jahrhundert einen neuen Aufschwung in der
Badekultur. Die großen Heilbäder wie Gellért, Lukács,
die Margareteninsel und Széchényi zeugen dafür.
Balneotherapie, die Anwendung von Thermalwasser
für Heilbehandlungen, ist bis zum heutigen Tag eine
wirksame Therapie. Sie wird natürlich mit aktuellen und
beliebten Wellness-Behandlungen aus allen Teilen des

Thermal Water
Rich in minerals and warmed by the heat of the earth’s
interior, thermal spring water is prevalent below the
surface of most of Hungary. The mineral content of the
water varies depending upon location, each area offering
slightly different health benefits and effects. Through
clinical studies and hundreds of years of experience,
thermal water is known to be especially effective in the
treatment of mobility disorders. In addition, the relaxation
benefits of the water have made Hungary famous,
attracting visitors to its many thermal spa complexes.
The Famous Mud from Hévíz
In most of our Hungarian spas, mud from the natural
thermal lake of Hévíz is used as a core signature treatment.
The mud, which has been soaked in the lake’s thermal
water, comprises decomposed aquatic plants, sulphur and
has a high mineral content.

dem natürlichen Thermalsee von Hévíz zu den wichtigsten
Spezialbehandlungen.
Der mit dem Thermalwasser des Sees durchtränkte
Schlamm enthält verfaulte Algen, Schwefel und eine hohe
Mineralkonzentration.

Situated next to the German border, what was once
Bohemia, the beautiful spa resort of Mariánské Láznĕ
perches on a high wooded valley. This famous resort pays
homage to spa culture through its glorious Edwardian
architecture, spa buildings and colonnades. When you
see the elaborately decorated buildings and breathe the
clear highland air, it is immediately clear why royalty, poets,
scientists and thinker were attracted to this spa resort for
generations.
Mariánské Láznĕ was founded at the beginning of the 19th
century, but it was during the ‘golden age’ at the end of the
century that the spa town witnessed an unprecedented
boom. Prominent visitors included inventor Thomas
Edison, writers Goethe, Mark Twain and N. V. Gogol,
composers Strauss, Chopin and Wagner, and many other
famous artists and celebrities from around the world.
King Edward VII of England ranked among the most
regular guests, visiting the town nine times in total; in 1904
he met here with the Austrian Emperor, Franz Joseph I.
Guests today are even able to experience a treatment in
his personal bath cabin, with its unique atmosphere and
elaborate decoration.

Unweit der deutschen Grenze, einst Böhmen, befindet
sich der schöne Kurort Marienbad in einem hohen bewaldeten Tal. Dieser berühmte Kurort huldigt die Heilbadkultur durch seine prächtige Edwardian Architektur
(Zeit König Edward VII. von England), seine Spa-Gebäude
und Kolonnaden. Sie machen den Ort zu einer „Pflichtsehenswürdigkeit“ auf der Liste der Stätten, die man einmal
im Leben gesehen haben sollte.
Wenn man das Panorama der reich geschmückten Gebäude in einer klaren, erfrischenden Hochlandluft betrachtet, ist es schnell verständlich, warum die Reichen
und Schönen, der Adel, Wissenschaftler, Dichter und
Denker über Generationen hinweg von diesem Kurort bezaubert waren.
Marienbad wurde am Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts gegründet, aber der noch nie da gewesene Boom, das goldene Zeitalter des Badeortes kam erst am Ende dieses
Jahrhunderts.
König Edward VII. von England gehörte zu den Stammgästen, er besuchte den Ort insgesamt neunmal und traf
hier 1904 den österreichischen Kaiser Franz Joseph I. Heute können Gäste sogar eine Behandlung in seiner privaten

The Spa
Heritage
of PIEŠŤANY
The Spa Island of Piešt’any is one of Europe‘s largest and
most special spa complexes. Its curative waters comprise
ten springs of thermal water containing hydrogen sulphide
and 1500 mg of mineral substances per litre. These waters
have permeated the limestone for many centuries and
have been naturally heated by the Earth’s magma to
temperatures of between 67 ºC and 69 ºC.
The spa’s fame has grown since it was mentioned in
a poem by Adam Trajan in 1642. Today the main spring is
named after him. The end of the 19th century was a time
of incredible growth when the owners rented it to the
Winter family. It is from that time that its symbol emerged
– a man breaking his crutch, freeing himself of pain.
The Winter family set about the task of modernizing the
spas with real energy.
The magnificent Art-Nouveau Thermia Palace and Irma
Spa date from this era.
The spa has attracted many famous people through the
years, including Austrian Emperor Karol I, Selma Lagerlöf,
composer Franz Lehár, Indian maharajas, Arabian sheikhs
and film stars.

Das Heilbad-Erbe
von PIEŠŤANY
Die Kurinsel von Piešt’any ist eine der größten und einzigartigsten Kur-Komplexe Europas. Ihre Heilwässer
fließen aus 10 Quellen mit Thermalmineralwasser mit heilendem Schwefelwasserstoff und 1.500 mg Mineralstoffe
pro Liter. Diese Wässer haben den Kalkstein über viele
Jahrhunderte hinweg durchdrungen und wurden vom Erdinneren auf die Temperatur 67-69 Grad Celsius erwärmt.
Seitdem das Heilbad in einem Gedicht von Adam Trajan
1642 erwähnt wurde, ist seine Berühmtheit gewachsen.
Heute sind die Hauptquellen nach ihm genannt.
Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war die Zeit eines unglaublichen Wachstums. Damals vermieteten die Eigentümer das
Heilbad an die Familie Winter. Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch
das Symbol: Ein Mann zerbricht seine Krücke, befreit sich
von den Schmerzen. Die Familie Winter begann das Heibad mit ungewöhnlicher Energie zu modernisieren. Noch
heute zeugen dafür der imposante Art Nouveau Thermia
Palace und das Kurzentrum Irma.
Das Heilbad hat viele Berühmtheiten über die Jahre angezogen wie den österreichischen Kaiser Karl I., Selma Lagerlöf, den Komponisten Franz Lehár, indische Maharadschas, arabische Scheichs, Filmstars und viele andere

Heritage of
Sovata
The spa resort of Sovata lies nestled in a hidden valley in
the Carpathian Mountains. This is probably one of the
most natural, un-spoilt regions left in Europe. The spa is
situated right next to Lake Bear, the only ‚helio-thermal‘
lake on the continent. At the turn of the last century,
picturesque wooden villas sprang up around the lake;
they are still intact today, and give the town a unique
atmosphere.
Because of its high salt content (which means bathers can
float effortlessly on the surface), it is often referred to as
the ‚Dead Sea‘ of Transylvania. In the summer the surface temperature is between 20 ºC and 25 ºC, while at a
depth of 2 metres it rises to 35–40 ºC; it is a wonderful
experience to lie back on the lake and unwind among its
beautiful surroundings. This remarkable lake with its
curative salt water has attracted visitors for decades.
Sovata is the perfect base from which to see some of the
best sights in Romania: Gyilkos tó (Lacul Roșu, Killer
Lake), Békás Szoros (Cheile Bicazului, Frog’s Gorge), the
fairytale town of Segesvár (Sighișoara) and Dracula’s
castle, all set in the magical Carpathian Mountains.
And after a long day’s sightseeing, you can return for a
heavenly soak in the salt-water lake.

Eingebettet in ein verstecktes Tal der Karpaten liegt der
Kurort Sovata, umgeben von einer der natürlichsten und
unberührtesten Regionen Europas.
Das Spa befindet sich direkt am Bärensee, dem einzigen
Heliothermalwasser-See auf dem Kontinent. Um die letzte Jahrhundertwende wurden viele malerische Holzvillen
um den See erbaut. Wegen seines hohen Salzgehalts
und der sich daraus ergebenden Schwebewirkung, wird
er oft als „Totes Meer“ von Transsilvanien bezeichnet. Im
Sommer beträgt die Wassertemperatur an der Ober
fläche 20–25 ºC und 35-40 ºC in einer Tiefe von 2 Metern.
Wer hier badet, erlebt vollkommene Entspannung in
einer schönen, natürlichen Umgebung.
Dieser merkwürdige See mit seinem Heilsalzwasser zieht
seit Jahrzehnten Besucher an.
Sovata ist eine ausgezeichnete Ausgangsbasis für Aus
flüge zu den wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Rumänien; dem Gyilkos tó (Lacul Roșu, Mördersee), dem Békás
