The gallery started off by selling Chinese brush paintings from China and Malaysia before expanding to modern paintings by Malaysian and foreign artists. Many dedicated local artists have had their first solo here. For over 28 years, SDT has spear-headed art exhibitions in tandem with its dance productions. With the formation of Sutra Gallery in 1996, a consistent flow of figurative works have emerged through the gallery’s commissions and residency programmes. Through the efforts and visions of Ramli Ibrahim (SDT’s artistic director) and Sivarajah Natarajan (Sutra Gallery’s curator), the gallery has projected Dance especially the Indian classical dance styles of Odissi and Bharata Natyam and also the declining Malay pastimes of Makyong, Menora and Main ‘ Teri as potent subject matter in Malaysian visual arts. In 1995, he mounted his solo exhibition “Yin Et Yang Et Cetera” at the Creative Centre of the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. Since then he has exhibited in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bali, Australia, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Portugal, Hungary and Malaysia. Today, it is one of the most recognisable buildings in Malacca and a must-see for all who visit this World Heritage City. Charles Cham is known to create the yin and yang style of painting and had previously lived and painted in France, New York and Budapes. His works are in the private collections in more than 40 countries. Charles Cham’s work s are based on the philosophy of Yin and Yang – the duality of life and the attraction of opposites.
