Benrath Palace is a maison de plaisance and was built as a summer residence and
hunting lodge for Elector Palatine Carl Theodor (1724–99, Elector of Bavaria from
1777) and his wife Elizabeth Auguste (1721–94) close to the Rhine in the south of
Düsseldorf. The architect Nicolas de Pigage (1723–96), who also designed the couple’s
residences in Mannheim and Schwetzingen, created in Benrath one of the most
beautiful garden palaces of the 18th century. Work on the site began in 1755 but the
building was only completed in 1773. Today, the never destroyed ensemble with its
artistic unity of buildings, interior design and 100-hectare gardens is regarded as one of
the rare examples of a late rococo Gesamtkunstwerk in Europe. Particularly noteworthy
are the original marble and parquetry floors and the very rich stucco decorations by the
Italian master Albuzio after designs by the sculptor Peter Anton von Verschaffelt.

While the boiserie and large mirrors with their console tables have remained in situ, the
vast majority of the original movable furniture was taken to other palaces over the
centuries (e.g. Brühl and Mannheim). Among the pieces that have found their way back
is a multi-function table by Abraham Roentgen inlaid with flower buds and a marquetry
secretaire abattant by the Palatine court ebenist Johann Jakob Kieser (1734–86).

First mentioned in the 12th century, the moated castle of Anholt sits in the western part
of Münsterland. Extended into a stately baroque residence around 1700 by Prince Carl
Theodor Otto, it is one of the region's few privately owned castles and contains one of
the most valuable private art collections in Germany. The current owner is Prince Carl
Philipp of Salm and Salm-Salm and we will be guided by the museum’s director Dr
Draco van Krugten.
As part of the reconstruction of the castle, after 70% was destroyed in 1945, a museum
was added to the Wasserburg Anholt. Amongst the 700 paintings there are outstanding
works by Dutch painters of the 17th Century, such as Rembrandt, Jan van Goyen and
Gerard ter Borch. Other masters from Flandern (J. Breughel the Younger), Germany
(Bartholomew Bruyn, Holbein, Jobst Harich), Spain (Murillo) and Italy (Carlo Dolci,
Salvator Rosa) are also represented at Wasserburg Anholt.
Of great interest to us are the extensive collections of Chinese, Japanese, Dutch and
German porcelain from the 17th and 18th Century and Renaissance and Baroque
furniture. The latter includes an important group of five pieces (bureau Mazarin,
looking glass, games table and a pair of guéridons) made by a pupil of André-Charles
Boulle working for the Imperial court in Vienna. In the State Bedroom there is a richly
decorated blue and parcel-gilt cabinet-on-stand worked-on by the Crown Prince and
later Emperor Josef I, who was trained in cabinetmaking as a boy.

Münster was a leading Hanseatic town in Westphalia and the location of the Anabaptist
rebellion during the Protestant Reformation as well as the site of the signing of the
Treaty of Westphalia ending the Thirty Years' War in 1648. It is worth noting that this
war destroyed 1019 villages, 97 towns and 119 castles in Westphalia alone.
The city of Münster itself had avoided destruction as it had been declared neutral in
1643 in order to host the peace negotiations of 150 envoys. The panelling of the south
side of the council chamber in which they met was created in 1577. The date can be
found on the entrance door, which is decorated with the figure of the Saviour and
Redeemer Jesus Christ. The designs are by Hermann tom Ring, the most important
Westphalian painter of the 16th Century (several of his and other members of his
family’s works are in the Landesmuseum).
The pillars of the eastern window wall show the four Evangelists. The representations
were carved in the manner of the engravings of Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1549.
The front side (north wall) of the room is dominated by a wall of 22 cupboards, the
judge’s table and the mayor’s bench. The cupboard doors are carved with reliefs of a
wide variety of biblical scenes, figures of saints and illustrations of human vices. The
doors appear to have been made around 1536, some possibly earlier. Presumably they
were taken over from an earlier furnishing scheme of the room and adapted to be
incorperated in the new panelling of 1577.
Three hundred years later 91% of Münster lay in ashes including the Town Hall.
However, the Friedenssaal was swiftly reinstated as all its original wooden fittings and
Renaissance portraits had been evacuated.

Decorative arts and paintings curator Dr. Angelica Lorenz will guide us through the
museum’s multifaceted collections. The holdings comprise more than 100,000 objects
ranging from medieval ecclesiastical art in Westphalia to works from the Renaissance,
the Baroque and the 19th century right through to classical Modernist works and
contemporary art.
Of particular interest is the famous German Renaissance Wrangel-Schrank (named after
the Swedish General Karl Gustav Graf von Wrangel (1613–76) who is thought to have
claimed it as booty during the Thirty Years War) made in Augsburg in 1566 by Lorenz
Strohmeir and Bartlmä Weishaupt. The intarsia panels depict on all sides complicated

and intertwined scenes of Roman armour together with geometrical and architectural
elements. The inside contains an arrangement of drawers with finely carved boxwood
fronts of battle scenes.
On display are several pieces of furniture and boiserie rescued from the burned-out
Schloss Münster, designed by the local architect Wilhelm Ferdinand Lipper (1733–
1800). The collection also contains works by Jean-Henri Riesner (1734–1806) and
Francois Rübestück (1722–85), both born in Münster.

dealer and recent co-curator of the Friedrich Gottlob Hoffmann exhibition in the Grassi
Museum, Leipzig).
Dr. Achim Stiegel will make a short presentation about the Berlin Coin Cabinet by
Dagly, which is part of the Lackmuseum’s exhibition.
In the outhouses is Axel Reimer’s company Sägefurniere Signorello
(http://www.saegefurniere.de/english/index.html) were he uses a historic veneer mill
saw to manufacture sawn veneers for restoring furniture, building musical instruments,
parquet floors and individual articles. The workshop will be open for viewing and
discussions.

Director Dr. Monika Kopplin will lead a full-morning visit to the museum’s rich
collection of lacquerworks from all over the world. The day’s emphasis lays on the
exhibition “Gérard Dagly 1660 – 1715 and the Berlin Court Workshop” in celebration
of the 300th anniversary of the death of this outstanding Flemish artist. He founded in
1686 the first European court workshop for lacquer ware and in the 25 years of its
existence lacquer furniture, musical instruments and small objects of various kinds were
created in such extraordinary quality that his work gained recognition far beyond the
borders of Brandenburg-Prussia. Staying stylistically close to the Chinese and Japanese
models and patterns, Dagly pushed European lacquer art to new heights. The exhibition
brings together the most significant examples of Dagly’s work and compares them to

their Oriental prototypes. Objects have been loaned mainly from the collections of the
Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg, the Decorative Arts
Museum Berlin and the Administration of Palaces and Gardens in Hesse.
The accompanying catalogue of works by Dagly includes restoration case-studies and
essays which shed new light on the historical and material context of lacquer furniture
in the late 17th/early 18th Century (see Literature List).

For those wishing to return to Düsseldorf Airport it is suggested to take the direct train from
Münster Station (directly opposite Hotel Kaiserhof). This hourly train is with 1h 42min travel time
the least expensive and traffic wise the most reliable mode of transport.
N.B.: The train ticket is not included in the FHS package. An individual Single Ticket is €27
but the Group Fare (10 persons upwards) is €14 per person.
Please, indicate if you wish to travel on the recommended train and Melanie will organise
the ticket for you (payable on the day in cash).

N.B.: The ‘Train Station Düsseldorf Airport’ is a short walk from the ‘Sky Train’, which
leaves every 5 minutes and takes 7 minutes to the furthest Air Port Terminal C (check-in Easy
Jet). Germanwings/Lufthansa check-ins are in Terminal A and British Airways departs from
Terminal B.
The cost for the Sky Train is included in the Deutsche Bahn ticket from Münster.
