hülsta woodwinds
Mit dem internationalen Wettbewerb hülsta woodwinds wollen hülsta und die GWK hochbegabte
junge Holzbläserinnen und Holzbläser fördern. Bei
diesem Wettbewerb geht es uns nicht allein um
technische Perfektion – denn die setzen wir als
selbstverständlich voraus. In einer globalisierten
Hightech-Welt, die Individualität in eben dem
Maße vernichtet, wie sie vorgibt, man könne sie mit
Massenware käuflich erwerben, richten wir den Fokus auf die künstlerische Persönlichkeit. Wir wünschen uns Preisträger, die nicht nur durch Virtuosität, sondern die durch Originalität im besten Sinn,
durch ein außergewöhnlich tiefes musikalisches
Verständnis sowie durch die Authentizität ihres
Vortrags überzeugen. Wir suchen Charaktere, die
noch den Kenner und die Expertin bezaubern, die
Liebhaberin faszinieren und den Amateur betören,
die aber auch den Laien, die Gelegenheitshörerin
packen und nachhaltig für die Musik gewinnen.
Wir danken der Musikhochschule Münster, mit der
die GWK eine langjährige, vertrauensvolle Zusammenarbeit verbindet, für die freundliche Kooperation auch beim dritten internationalen hülsta
woodwinds-Wettbewerb.

Organized by hülsta and GWK (Society for the Fostering of Cultural Activities
in Westfalia), the international woodwind competition hülsta woodwinds aims at
supporting highly gifted young woodwind players. In this competition, we look for
more than technical perfection, which to us is a matter of course. In a globalized
hightechworld, which destroys individuality to the same extent as it pretends it to be
venal in products of mass consumption, we again focus on the artistic personality. We
are looking forward to laureates who convince by both virtuosity and genuineness, by
an extraordinarily deep musical understanding as well as by the authenticity of their
performance. We are looking for characters who will spellbind the connoisseur and
even the expert, who will bewitch the amateur and enthrall the enthusiast, and who
will also captivate the layman, making him and her a true longterm listener to music.
We very much thank the Münster Academy of Music, a reliable partner of the GWK
for many years, for collaborating with us in the third international hülsta woodwinds

Wettbewerb
Der internationale Holzbläserwettbewerb hülsta
woodwinds ist ausgeschrieben für Querflöte, Blockflöte, Klarinette, Saxofon, Oboe und Fagott.
Ausrichter des Wettbewerbs sind hülsta und die
GWK. Die Musikhochschule Münster ist Kooperationspartner von hülsta woodwinds. Die Gesamtleitung des Wettbewerbs liegt bei der GWK.
Von den Preisträgern werden international herausragende künstlerische Leistungen und Konzertreife
gefordert. Bewertet werden die künstlerische
Persönlichkeit, die musikalische Gestaltung und
das technische Können der Bewerber.
Teilnehmen können Solistinnen und Solisten aller
Nationalitäten, die zum Zeitpunkt des Wettbewerbs
nicht älter als 27 Jahre sind. Sie müssen an einer
Musikhochschule studieren, vergleichbaren Privatunterricht erhalten oder bereits einen künstlerischen Hochschulabschluss erworben haben.

Der Wettbewerb besteht aus drei Durchgängen (1. Runde, 2. Runde, Finale). Alle
Wettbewerbsrunden sind öffentlich. Das Wettbewerbsprogramm besteht aus Pflichtund Wahlstücken. Die Werke der Endrunde müssen auswendig vorgetragen werden.
Eine internationale Jury bestimmt die Preisträger. Alle Entscheidungen der Jury sind
verbindlich und unanfechtbar. Die Jury ist berechtigt, den Vortrag der Teilnehmer
zu kürzen oder Werke nur auszugsweise aufführen zu lassen.
Fächerübergreifend werden 2 gleichwertige Preise vergeben. Die Preise sind mit je
5.000 € dotiert. Separat honorierte Konzerte sollen folgen. Beim Label „CC Classic
Clips“ der GWK (www.classic-clips.de) werden zwei Preisträger-CDs eingespielt.
Alle anderen Finalteilnehmer erhalten ein Diplom und eine Gratifikation in Höhe
von 1.000 €.
Die Jury soll die zwei Preise gleichberechtigt vergeben, sie ist dazu aber nicht verpflichtet. Sie kann Preise aussetzen oder teilen.

erhielt Klavierunterricht, dann Klarinetten- und
Saxophonunterricht. Er belegte Meisterkurse des
Berklee Colleges of Music und spielte in mehreren Kammermusik- und Jazzensembles. Beim
Meisterkurs ‚Kammermusik mit Saxophonen‘
wurde er mit dem Pindakaas Saxophon Quartett
ausgezeichnet. Schröder studierte außerdem Geschichte und Publizistik in Bochum und Münster. Mit Stipendium der Bertelsmann-Stiftung
absolvierte er Seminare für Musikkritiker, 2000
folgte die Promotion an der Universität Münster.
Matthias Schröder ist freier Musiker, Kulturjournalist und Musikdramaturg.

ist Professor für Schlagzeug und Prodekan
an der Musikhochschule Münster. Nach

ist Froleyks als Komponist, Interpret, Autor
und Kurator tätig. Als Schlagzeuger gibt er
Konzerte im In- und Ausland. Improvisationskonzerte gab er mit Jaap Blonk, Phil
Minton, Paulo Alvares und Mike Svoboda.
Er nahm an zahlreichen Rundfunk- und
CD-Produktionen teil. Froleyks konstruiert neuartige Instrumente, darunter sind
Flötenmaschinen, Messertische und eine
geschweifte Tuba. Kompositionsaufträge
erhielt er u.a. von der Kunststiftung NRW
und den Musiktagen Donaueschingen.

Die Besten fördern
Die GWK ist ein gemeinnütziger Verein zur
Förderung exzellenter junger Künstlerinnen
und Künstler.
Die GWK wird von sechs Förderpartnern
getragen. Premium Förderpartner der GWK
sind: die Kulturstiftung der Westfälischen
Provinzial Versicherung, die RWE AG, die
NRW.BANK und der Landschaftsverband
Westfalen-Lippe. Außerdem unterstützen
diese Förderpartner die GWK: der Sparkassenverband Westfalen-Lippe und die WGZ

Die Musikhochschule Münster wurde 1919 als „Westfälische Hochschule für
Musik“ gegründet und blickt somit auf eine lange Historie zurück. Heute
bildet sie einen eigenen Fachbereich an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität (WWU) Münster. Die Musikhochschule spannt den Bogen ihrer Ausbildung zwischen der traditionellen Musikpflege und den aus ihr gewachsenen
vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen von Musik in der heutigen Zeit.
In verschiedenen Bachelor- und Masterstudiengängen, von der Jugendakademie bis zum Konzertexamen oder der künstlerischen Promotion bildet
die Musikhochschule Münster erfolgreich aus. Etwa 300 Studierende aus der
ganzen Welt werden von unseren 150 Lehrenden unterrichtet, begleitet und
gefördert. Gastaufenthalte und Meisterkurse von renommierten Vertretern
ihres Fachs bereichern und ergänzen die Ausbildung der Studierenden.

Competition
The international woodwind competition
hülsta woodwinds is open for flute, recorder,
clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon.
The competition is organized by the GWK
and hülsta. The Münster Academy of Music
is partner of hülsta woodwinds. The general
management and the artistic direction of the
competition lies with the GWK.
The winners of hülsta woodwinds are expected
to meet international standards of musical
maturity and public performance. Judgement
criteria are artistic personality, musical interpretation and technical proficiency.
hülsta woodwinds is open to soloists of all
nationalities who at the time of the competition are no older than 27 years. They must be
enrolled in or have graduated from a music
conservatoire, or enjoy comparable private
education.

The competition consists of three rounds (first round, second round, finale). All
rounds are open to the public. The competition programme consists of compulsory
pieces and works of free choice. The pieces of the finale are to be played from memory.
An international jury evaluates the competitors’ performances. All decisions of the
jury are final and incontestable. The jury may interrupt an applicant’s performance or
order the applicant to perform only a portion of the piece.
Two equal prizes will be awarded for the competition as a whole. Prizes are endowed
with 5.000 € each. Concerts shall be arranged for the laureates. The prizes shall
include a CD production with the GWK-label CC Classic Clips (www.classic-clips.
de). All other finalists of the competition will receive a diploma and gratification to
the amount of 1.000 €.
Only the jury decides on the award of the prizes. The jury is supposed to assign two
equal prize winners, but they are not required to do so. The jury may suspend or
divide a prize.

a percussionist he appears regularly at home
and abroad. He has given improvised concerts with Jaap Blonk, Phil Minton, Paulo

part in numerous radio broadcasts and
CDs. Froleyks also builds novel instruments,
including flute machines, knife tables and a
curved tuba. He has received commissions
from the North-Rhine Westphalia Arts

Münster Academy of Music
The Münster Academy of Music was founded in 1919 as the “Westphalian Academy of
Music” and can therefore look back on a long history. Today it is now its own Faculty in
the Wilhelms-University of Münster (WWU).
The Münster Academy of Music spans a wide range of training going from the traditional
promotion of music in general to all of its manifold derived forms in today’s modern
world. In many different Degree Courses the Academy successfully trains students ranging from the Youth Academy right up to Bachelor and Masters, the Concert Examination
or to their Artistic Promotion. Around 300 students from all over the world are taught,
furthered and supported by about 150 teaching staff who are at our disposal. Guest Visits
and Master Courses led by renowned representatives of their particular field of expertise
enrich and enhance students’ training.
