A fable
The ant and the grasshopper
It is a summer day. The grasshopper is singing and playing music. He is happy. Then he sees
an ant that is very busy. The ant is collecting food for the winter.
«Stop and talk to me», says the grasshopper. «We can sing songs and dance for a while.»
«Oh no», says the ant. «Winter is coming. I’m collecting food for winter. I think you should
prepare for winter too.»
«I don’t want to collect food now», says the grasshopper. «Winter is a long time off. Look
how warm and sunny it is! And there is enough food right now.» So the grasshopper goes on
dancing and singing and playing music and the ant goes on working.
Then winter comes. It is cold and there is snow on the
ground. There is no food and the grasshopper is very hungry.
So he goes to the ant’s house and asks: «Can I have some
fruit or maybe a little corn, please? I am so hungry, please
help me!»
«You danced last summer», says the ant. «You can go on
dancing.» And the ant closes the door and gives him no food.

Ants live together in a big group called a colony. In one colony there

The nest
Ants live in a large nest with ants of the
same species. An ant colony is able to
construct a nest of about four metres’
depth. Such a nest has many small
chambers, most of them filled with
stocks of food. The other chambers are
for the larvae, for the eggs and for the
waste. Far under the earth’s surface,
there is a chamber just for the queen ant.
Colonies are made up of three types of
ants: The queen, male and female
workers. Usually, there is a single queen
per colony. She is larger than the other
ants and has wings during the first part
of her life. The queen is the founder of a new colony and is responsible for laying eggs to
produce new ants to keep the colony in existence.
The survival of the colony depends on the workers. These are the ants we usually see.
Workers bring food into the nest, are responsible for housekeeping, digging, cleaning and
feeding each other and defending the colony against enemies.
