A Festival for All
Im Ernst verschließen wir uns leicht,
doch im Spiel erst werden wir uns
öffnen. Denn das Spiel selbst eröffnet
uns Türen in neue unbekannte Räume.
Es lässt uns Möglichkeiten erkunden,
fremde Welten erforschen oder bis dahin
nicht gedachte Wirklichkeiten erfinden.
Das Spiel macht uns leicht, mutig und
frech. Wir werden zu Abenteurern.
Wir werden selbstlos und wechseln
ohne Probleme sogar unser Alter, das
Geschlecht und die Nationalität. Wir
erfinden neue Sprachen, erzählen uns
unglaubliche Geschichten, blicken in die
eigene Vergangenheit oder schauen in
eine fremde Zukunft. Im Spiel können
wir Grenzen überwinden, Gegensätze
vereinen und Realitäten auf den Kopf
stellen. Im Spiel kann das Ernste komisch
sein und das Laute leise. Im Spiel können
Blinde sehen und Häuser tanzen.

In seriousness we close ourselves easily,
but only in play are we open. Because
play itself opens doors into new unknown
spaces. It allows us to experience
possibilities, explore strange new worlds
or invent as of yet unimagined realities.
Play makes us cool, courageous and bold.
We become adventurers. We become
selfless and even change our age, gender
and nationality easily. We invent new
languages, tell incredible stories, take a
glimpse into our past or look ahead into a
strange future. In play, we can overcome
boundaries, unite opposing forces
and turn reality on its head. In play,
seriousness can be funny and loudness
quiet. In play, the blind can see and
houses dance.

Grußwort
Als am 12. Mai 1965 vor 50 Jahren die
deutsch-israelischen Beziehungen
unterzeichnet wurden, konnte keiner
glauben, dass wir es schaffen würden,
unsere beiden Länder so eng, wie sie
heute sind, zu verbinden. Die beiden
Staatsmänner David Ben-Gurion, einer
der Gründer und erster Ministerpräsident
des Staates Israel und Konrad Adenauer,
erster Kanzler der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland, machten es entgegen aller
Widrigkeiten möglich, dass beide Staaten
in einen direkten Dialog treten konnten.
Heute sind die bilateralen Beziehungen
eng, vertrauensvoll und vieldimensional.
Die Intensität der Kontakte
kontinuierlich zu vertiefen, ist ein
gemeinsames Anliegen unserer beiden
Regierungen und Gesellschaften.
Am wichtigsten ist es, dabei die
junge Generation in beiden Ländern
miteinzubeziehen, sie wird unsere
gemeinsame Zukunft schreiben, sie
wird die bereits bestehenden Brücken
ausbauen und sie wird mehr Wege der
Kooperation und Freundschaft zwischen
Israel und Deutschland kreieren.
Aus diesem Grund hat die Botschaft

gerufen. Das israelische Theaterfestival
richtet sich vor allem an die junge

Playground Israel ist zwar nur
ein kleiner Einblick, Israel näher
kennenzulernen, aber ich hoffe, es weckt
Ihr Interesse für mehr.

Playground Israel
50 years ago, as the German-Israeli
relations were signed on 12th May 1965,
no one could have believed that we would
achieve bringing our two countries so
closely together as they are today. The
two statesmen, David Ben-Gurion, one of
the founders and the first Prime Minister
of Israel, and Konrad Adenauer, the
first Chancellor of the Federal Republic
of Germany, made it possible, against
all odds, that both countries could
engage in direct dialogue. Today, the
bilateral relations are close, trustful and
multidimensional.
A common concern of both our
governments and societies is to
continuously deepen the intensity of
relations. The most important thing
here is to involve the younger generation
in both countries; they will write our
common future, they will expand the
existing bridges and they will create
more ways of cooperation and friendship
between Israel and Germany.
For this reason, the Embassy of
Israel together with the THEATER AN
DER PARKAUE created the Playground
Israel Festival. The Israeli theatre

festival is mainly aimed at the younger
generation, but also for their parents and
grandparents who have remained playful
at heart.
Playground Israel is only a little insight
toward getting to know Israel better, but I

Liebes Publikum,
herzlich willkommen zum Playground
Israel Festival im THEATER AN
DER PARKAUE. Wir haben sieben
Produktionen aus Israel für junges
Publikum ausgewählt, die die
große Bandbreite der israelischen
Theaterszene widerspiegeln: das
figurale Objekttheater von „The Cubes
Circus“, das Schattentheater um die
Geschichte des jungen Louis Braille von
Patricia O´Donovan, die Interpretation
der Kindheit von Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart durch die Puppenkünstlerin Gadit
Cohen, die israelisch-palästinensische
Freundschaftsgeschichte von Samir &
Yonatan, die dokumentarische Stand-up
Comedy des jüdischen Äthiopiers Yossi
Vassa, Meital Raz und Keren Dembinsky
interpretieren das alte indische Märchen
von Dummi & Dumma als Bollywood
Roadmovie und die Nadine Animato
Theatre Dance Company zeigt ihre
tänzerische Fußballparodie.
In unserem Rahmenprogramm
möchten wir Plattformen schaffen für
die Begegnung zwischen Künstlern aus
Israel, israelischen Künstlern aus Berlin
und dem Berliner Publikum. In diesem

Sinne eröffnen wir das Festival mit dem
Projekt „Playground Berlin“ von Berliner
Schülerinnen und Schülern. Workshops
für Familien geben die Gelegenheit, die
Arbeitsweise der Illustratorin Ella Cohen
und der Nadine Animato Theatre Dance
Company auszuprobieren. Mit Omer
Klein haben wir einen der bekanntesten
israelischen Jazzpianisten eingeladen.
In Lesungen stellen wir Ihnen Texte
vor, die Einblicke in das heutige Israel
geben. Freuen Sie sich auf Klassiker,
wie „Zimmer frei im Haus der Tiere“
von Leah Goldberg, auf das spannende
Jugendbuch „Auf der richtigen Seite“
von William Sutcliffe, auf eine Lesung
und ein Gespräch mit dem Journalisten
und Israelexperten Norbert Kron und der
israelischen Autorin Liat Elkayam und die
lange israelische Lesenacht am Samstag.
Wir freuen uns auf inspirierende
Begegnungen zwischen Künstlern und
Besuchern.

Dear audience,
Welcome to the Playground Israel Festival
at THEATER AN DER PARKAUE. We have
selected seven productions from Israel
for young audiences which reflect the
broad spectrum of the Israeli theatre
scene: the figural object theatre of The
Cubes Circus, the shadow theatre by
Patricia O´Donovan about the story of
the young Louis Braille, an interpretation
of the childhood of Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart by doll artist Gadit Cohen, the
Israeli-Palestinian friendship story of
Samir & Yonatan, a documentary standup comedy of the Jewish Ethiopian Yossi
Vassa, Meital Raz and Keren Dembinsky
interpret the ancient Indian fairytale of
Dummi & Dumma as a Bollywood road
movie and the Nadine Animato Theatre
Dance Company show their dancing
soccer parody.
In our support program, we want to
create platforms for encounters between
artists from Israel, Israeli artists from
Berlin and the Berlin audience. With this
in mind, we will open the festival with
the „Playground Berlin“ project by Berlin
students. Workshops for families give
the opportunity to try out the working

Company. We have invited one of the
best-known Israeli jazz pianists, Omer
Klein. In readings, we will present texts
that give insights into present-day
Israel. You can look forward to classics
like „A Flat for Rent (in the House of
Animals)“ by Leah Goldberg, the exciting
young adult book „The Wall“ by William
Sutcliffe, a reading and discussion with
the journalist and Israel expert Norbert
Kron as well as the Israeli author Liat
Elkayam and the Long Night of Israeli
Readings on Saturday.
We look forward to inspiring

Im „Cubes Circus“ entstehen aus
einfachsten geometrischen Formen und
gefaltetem Papier in Origami-Technik
blitzschnell immer wieder neue Figuren:
Prinzessinnen und Prinzen tanzen
zusammen im Ziehharmonikakostüm,
ein schwer erziehbarer Hund aus
Karton will einfach nicht hören und aus
einer papiernen Schlange und einem
Schlangenbeschwörer wird plötzlich eine
Ente. Clowns können eckige rote Nasen
tragen und mit einem Handgriff wird
aus einem Frosch ein Pferd. Zum Schluß
bauen zwei Clowns eine Stadt, in der die
Häuser um die Wette tanzen.
Die Regisseurin Galia Levy-Grad
zaubert mit einfachsten Mitteln eine Welt,
in der zwei Schauspieler große und kleine
Kisten, Kartons, Würfel und Quader zum
Leben erwecken und sich ganz ohne Worte
in immer neue Figuren verwandeln.

In the „Cubes Circus“ new characters
quickly emerge again and again from
simple geometric shapes and paper folded
origami style: princesses and princes
dance together in an accordion costume,
a hard-to-train dog made of cardboard
will simply not obey and a paper snake
charmer and his snake will suddenly turn
into a duck. Clowns can wear square red
noses and with a flick of the wrist a frog
becomes a horse. In the end, two clowns
build a city where the houses try to outdance each other.
With the simplest materials, director
Galia Levy-Grad conjures a world where
two actors breathe life into large and
small crates, boxes, cubes and building
blocks, which are constantly transformed
into new characters, all without words.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - das
Wunderkind. Mit drei Jahren spielte
er Klavier und mit vier Jahren Geige.
Mit fünf Jahren komponierte er sein
erstes Stück. Fortan schmiedete
sein Vater große Pläne für ihn. Er
schickte ihn und seine Schwester auf
Konzertreisen quer durch Europa und
ließ sie an allen großen Fürstenhäusern
auftreten. Sie begeisterten die Zuhörer
mit kleinen Kunststücken, wie das
Spiel mit verdeckten Tasten oder
das Vom-Blatt-Spielen der Noten
sämtlicher Musikstücke, die die Zuhörer
mitbrachten. Mozart besuchte nie
eine Schule und hatte aufgrund seiner
langen Reisen keine Zeit für Freunde.
Niemand fragte ihn, ob er manchmal
vielleicht lieber ein ganz normales Kind
gewesen wäre.
In ihrem Spiel mit Miniaturobjekten,
Fingerpuppen, Mozartperücken und
Requisiten untersucht die Schauspielerin
und Puppenkünstlerin Gadit Cohen die
Kindheit von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
sein Bild als Wunderkind, den Ehrgeiz
seines Vaters und wie es ist, als Kind ohne
Kindheit aufzuwachsen.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – child prodigy.
At three years old he played the piano
and the violin at age four. When he was
five, he composed his first piece. From
then on his father forged big plans for
him. He sent him and his sister on concert
tours throughout Europe and had them
perform at all of the major royal houses.
They inspired the audience with small
feats like playing with the keys hidden or
sight-playing the notes from music pieces
that were brought by the audience. Mozart
never went to school and, due to his long
journeys, had no time for friends. No one
asked him if he would have sometimes
preferred to be a normal child.
In her play with miniature objects,
finger puppets, Mozart wigs and props,
actress and doll artist, Gadit Cohen,
explores the childhood of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, his image as a child
prodigy, the ambition of his father and
how it was to grow up as a child without a
childhood.

Louis Braille ist gerade mal drei Jahre alt
als er seinem Vater, einem Sattler, bei der
Arbeit helfen will und dabei verunglückt.
Er verletzt sich an einer Nadel und verliert
dadurch sein Augenlicht. Seitdem kann
er seine Umgebung nur noch über Töne
und Berührungen wahrnehmen. Bald
findet er sich in seiner Welt zurecht. Er
geht sogar zur Schule und kann besser
im Kopf rechnen als seine Mitschüler.
Aber er weiß, dass ihm ein großer Schatz
verborgen bleibt – die Welt der Bücher.
Verzweifelt sucht er nach immer neuen
Methoden, um endlich lesen zu können.
Unterstützt durch seine Eltern, die
ihn ermuntern, sich nicht von seiner
Blindheit einschränken zu lassen, besucht
er schließlich eine Blindenschule in
Paris. Dort lernt er zum ersten Mal eine
Blindenschrift kennen. Louis arbeitet
fortan Tag und Nacht, um diese zu
vereinfachen und so kombiniert er
schließlich Punkte zu Buchstaben, die
leicht ertastet werden können.
Die Puppenkünstlerin Patricia
O'Donovan erzählt die Geschichte des
jungen Franzosen Louis Braille, der
im 19. Jahrhundert mit 15 Jahren eine
Blindenschrift entwickelt, die bis heute
genutzt wird. Mit ihren Figuren und
Objekten aus Papier und dem Einsatz
von Licht und Schatten schafft sie eine
eindrückliche szenische Übersetzung für
Louis Traum: sich die Welt der Bücher
anzueignen.

Louis Braille is just 3 years old when he
decides to help his father, a saddler, at
work and has a tragic accident. He injures
himself with a needle and thereby losing
his eyesight. Since then, he can only
perceive his surroundings through sounds
and by touching things. He soon finds a
way to cope with his new world. He even
goes to school and can calculate numbers
in his head better than his classmates. But
he knows that a big treasure is hidden from
him – the world of books. He desperately
seeks new methods in order to finally be
able to read. Supported by his parents, who
encourage him to not let his blindness limit
him, he attends a school for the blind in
Paris. There, he is introduced to embossed
printing for the first time. Louis works day
and night to make it simpler and finally he
combines raised points to represent letters
that can be felt easily.
Doll artist Patricia O’Donovan tells
the story of the young Frenchman, Louis
Braille, who at 15 years old developed the
Braille writing system in the 19th century,
which is still used today. With her dolls
and objects made of paper and the use
of light and shadow, O’Donovan creates
an impressive scenic adaptation of Louis’
dream: to acquire the world of books.

Nach einem Fahrradunfall muss der
arabische Junge Samir aus seinem
palästinensischen Dorf in der Westbank
in ein israelisches Spezialklinikum.
Zunächst hat er Angst, da er auf der
Kinderstation der einzige arabische
Junge unter den sonst jüdischen Kindern
ist. Allein unter Feinden trägt er zudem
noch schwer an der Trauer um seinen
von israelischen Soldaten erschossenen
Bruder und dem Verstummen seines
Vaters. Doch dann freundet er sich mit
dem jüdischen Jungen Yonatan an und
entdeckt mit ihm die Welt der Sterne und
Planeten. Für beide stellt sich bald die
Frage: Gibt es eine Hoffnung auf Frieden?
Die Regisseurin Sivan Handelsman
inszeniert die Geschichte von „Samir
& Yonatan“ nach dem Roman von
Daniella Carmi als furioses Solo.
Durch die Übernahme aller Rollen
verkörpert Yogev Yefet eindrücklich die
Freundschaftsgeschichte des israelischen
und arabischen Jungen und eröffnet so
die Möglichkeit einer Versöhnung.

After a bicycle accident, Samir, an
Arab boy, has to leave his Palestinian
village in the West Bank and go to an
Israeli specialty hospital. At first he is
afraid because he is the only Arabian
boy amongst all the Jewish kids in the
children’s ward. Alone among the enemy,
the mourning of his brother who was shot
by Israeli soldiers and his father’s falling
silent are still weighing heavily on him
as well. But then he makes friends with
the Jewish boy, Yonatan, and with him
discovers the world of stars and planets.
For both the question soon begs: Is there
any hope for peace?
Director Sivan Handelsman stages the
story of „Samir & Yonatan“ based on the
novel by Daniella Carmi in the form of a
furious solo. By taking on all of the roles,
Yogev Yefet impressively embodies the
story of friendship between the Israeli and
Arab boys and opens up the possibility of
reconciliation.

Zu Besuch bei den beiden Zwergen
Dummi und Dumma in Indien. Dummi
und Dumma essen am liebsten Holigi,
indische Pfannkuchen. Doch dafür
benötigen sie jede Menge Feuerholz.
Als Dumma sich auf den Weg in den
Wald macht, begegnet er einem
furchterregenden Tiger, der ihn nur
unter der Bedingung freilässt, dass
Dumma ihm etwas von seinen frischen
Holigi abgibt. Wieder Zuhause vergisst
Dumma sein Versprechen und verspeist
mit Dummi die köstlichen Holigi. Als
plötzlich der Tiger wieder auftaucht,
müssen sie sich schnell etwas überlegen
und flüchten in einen Kürbis. Da hat
Dummi eine rettende Idee, die den Kürbis
zum Explodieren bringt und den Tiger
endgültig in die Flucht schlägt.
Keren Dembinsky und Meital Raz
agieren in ihrem Miniaturobjekt- und
Puppentheater mit einer Kamera, einem
Fernseher, vielen winzigen Requisiten und
gerade mal vier Händen und erzählen so
das alte indische Märchen von Dummi
und Dumma als witziges Bollywood
Roadmovie.

A visit with two dwarfs, Dummi and
Dumma, in India. Dummi and Dumma
love to eat Holigi, Indian pancakes. But
for that they need a lot of firewood. As
Dumma makes his way in the forest, he
encounters a fearsome tiger that only lets
him go under the condition that Dumma
gives him some of the fresh Holigi. Back
at home, Dumma forgets his promise and
eats up all the delicious Holigi together
with Dummi. When suddenly the tiger
shows up, they need to quickly think of
something and escape into a pumpkin.
Then, Dummi has a brilliant idea that
causes the pumpkin to explode, sending
the tiger running away for good.
In their miniature object and puppet
theatre, Keren Dembinsky and Meital Raz
act with a camera, a television, many tiny
props and just four hands, and tell the old
Indian fairytale of Dummi and Dumma as
a funny Bollywood road movie.

Als Yossi Vassa zehn Jahre alt ist,
flüchtet seine Familie mit ihm von
Äthiopien nach Israel, da sie als Juden
in Äthiopien verfolgt werden. Die 700
Kilometer lange Reise legen er und
seine Familie unter schwierigsten
Bedingungen zurück. Zu Fuß, nachts auf
Eseln reitend, immer in der Furcht vor
Dieben und Soldaten, erreichen sie ein
Flüchtlingslager im Sudan. Während des
dortigen zwölfmonatigen Aufenthalts
leiden sie an ständigem Hunger und
vielen Krankheiten, an denen Yossi Vassas
Großmutter und seine zwei jüngeren
Brüder sterben. Bis sie endlich im Zuge
der „Operation Moses“ und zusammen
mit 15.000 anderen äthiopischen
Juden nach Israel ausgeflogen werden.
Rückblickend erinnert sich Yossi Vassa an
seine Reise, an seine ersten Begegnungen
in Israel und wie er beginnt, den Alltag
dort zu meistern. In seiner Erzählung
zeichnet er ein vielschichtiges Bild
des Umgangs mit Fremden und den
Schwierigkeiten der Integration in die
israelische Gesellschaft, ohne dabei den
Humor zu verlieren.
Die One Man Show von Yossi Vassa,
die aus einer Mischung aus Stand-up
Comedy und sehr persönlichem
storytelling besteht, wurde über
1.000-mal auf Hebräisch und mehr
als 200-mal auf der ganzen Welt auf
Englisch gespielt.

parents flee with him from Ethiopia to
Israel because they were persecuted in
Ethiopia for being Jews. Under extremely
harsh conditions, he and his family cover
the 700-kilometer distance. On foot, riding
a donkey at night, always in fear of thieves
and soldiers, they reach a refugee camp
in Sudan. During the twelve-month stay
there, they suffer constant hunger and
many diseases, which cost the lives of Yossi
Vassa’s grandmother and his two younger
brothers; until they, along with 15,000
other Ethiopian Jews, are finally flown to
Israel during „Operation Moses“. Looking
back, Yossi Vassa recollects his journey,
his first encounters in Israel and how he
begins to cope with everyday life there. In
his story, he paints a complex picture of
dealing with strangers and the difficulties
of integrating into Israeli society, all
without losing his sense of humor.
The One Man Show by Yossi Vassa,
which consists of a mix of stand-up
comedy and very personal story telling, has
been played over 1.000 times in Hebrew
and more than 200 times in English around
the world.

10 Fußballer wärmen sich auf, laufen
ins Stadion ein, feuern das Publikum
an, singen ihre Hymnen, bis der Anpfiff
ertönt. Angeheizt von rhythmischen
Beats, grölenden Massen und
eingespielten Fußballkommentatoren
beginnt das Fußballspiel. Die Spieler
feiern Tore, foulen, dribbeln, verletzen
sich, werden wiederbelebt und ruhen
sich in der Pause in der Kabine aus. Sie
kehren als Fans wieder, die das Spiel
gebannt von den Tribünen aus verfolgen
oder als Auswechselspieler auf der
Ersatzbank mit ihrer Mannschaft auf
dem Feld mitfiebern, bis sie schließlich
nach dem Schlußpfiff frenetisch den
Sieger feiern. Immer wieder friert das
Spiel ein oder wird zeitlupenartig vorund zurückgespult. Dabei entpuppen
sich die Fußballer erst auf den zweiten
Blick als perfekt gestylte Tänzerinnen,
die die Situationen und Gesten eines
Fußballspiels künstlerisch nachstellen.
Mit „Invisi'Ball“ schafft die
Choreographin Nadine Bommer
zusammen mit ihren zehn Tänzerinnen
eine kraftvolle Fußballparodie, in der
sie auf humorvolle Weise Rollentypen
und – klischees des Fußballs inszeniert
und ausstellt, sowohl durch die optische
Erscheinung der Tänzerinnen als auch
durch ihre Gesten und Bewegungen.

10 soccer players warm up, run into the
stadium, cheer on the spectators and sing
their hymns until the whistle blows. Fueled
by rhythmic beats, roaring crowds and
well-rehearsed soccer commentators, the
game starts. The players celebrate goals,
make fouls, dribble the ball, get hurt, are
revived and recover in the dressing room
during the break. They return again as
fans following the game spellbound from
the stands or as substitutes on the bench
cheering with their team on the pitch until
they celebrate the winner after the final
whistle. Over and over the game freezes
or is played forward and backward in slow
motion. Not until a second glance do the
soccer players turn out to be perfectly
styled dancers who artistically enact the
situations and gestures of a soccer game.
With „Invisi'Ball“, choreographer
Nadine Bommer, together with her ten
dancers, creates a powerful soccer parody
in which she stages and presents typical
roles and clichés of soccer, both by the
visual appearance of the dancers as well
as their gestures and movements.

Ein Krieg zwischen zwei fremden Mächten
tobt in dem Land am Meer. Der junge
Nachum wird von seiner Großmutter
fortgeschickt aus Angst, dass auch er als
Soldat in den Krieg eingezogen werden
könnte. Auf dem Weg begegnet ihm ein
Junge, der eine wichtige Mission hat: Er
folgt dem Pfad der Orangenschalen mit
dem Auftrag, eine Tasche mit wichtigen
Dokumenten und Geld aus einem Haus
in der besetzten Stadt zu holen. Mit
großer List und viel Glück überstehen
sie Bombenhagel und Kanonendonner
und erreichen die Stadt. Doch dann
verunglückt der Junge. Nachum muss
die Mission allein vollenden. In der Stadt
angekommen, häufen sich die Probleme
und Schwierigkeiten immer mehr, bis
Nachum mit seinen Freunden endlich
einen scharfsinnigen aber gefährlichen
Plan ausheckt.

des israelischen Malers und Schriftstellers

Hannan Ishay auf poetische Weise

A war between two foreign powers rages
on in a country by the sea. The young
Nachum is sent away by his grandmother
for fear that he could be drafted as a
soldier into the war. On the way, he meets
a young man who has an important
mission: He follows the path of the orange
peels with orders to retrieve a bag with
important documents and money from
a house in the occupied city. With great
cunning and a lot of luck, they survive a
hail of bombs and cannon fire and reach
the city. But then the young man is in an
accident. Now Nachum must complete
the mission alone. Once in the city, the
problems and challenges continue to get
worse, until finally Nachum, together
with his friends, hatches an ingenious but
dangerous plan.
Based on the childhood memories
of Israeli painter and author Nachum
Gutman (1898 – 1980), Hannan Ishay
adapts for the stage in a poetic way the
story of young people between the fronts
and the longing for peace and life.

Zum Auftakt des Festivals Playground
Israel laden die Schüler des Jüdischen
Gymnasiums Moses Mendelssohn und
der Heinz-Brandt-Schule in die Foyers
des THEATER AN DER PARKAUE ein und
präsentieren ihre Arbeitsergebnisse.
Seit Anfang des Jahres 2015 haben sie
sich mit den Themen „deutsche und
israelische Identität“, „Migration“
und der „Konstruktion von Heimat“
auseinandergesetzt.

Die Klasse 8a des Jüdischen
Gymnasiums Moses Mendelssohn
begibt sich gemeinsam mit der
Fotografin Daniela Orvin auf die Spuren
israelischen Lebens in Berlin. Dabei
werden israelische, in Berlin lebende,
Künstlerinnen und Künstler interviewt
sowie ihre Arbeitsorte fotografisch in
Szene gesetzt.
Der Darstellendes Spiel-Kurs der
Heinz-Brandt-Schule beschäftigt sich
unter der Leitung von Performancekünstler Amit Jacobi mit der eigenen
Haltung zu den Begriffen „Identität“ und
„Heimat“ sowie zum Konstrukt „Israel“.

Orvin, Class 8a of the Moses Mendelssohn
Jewish High School follows the trail
of Israeli life in Berlin. Various artists
who live in Berlin are interviewed and
photographed.
The „Performing Arts“ course of
the Heinz Brandt Secondary School
in Weißensee, together with the
performance artist Amit Jacobi, creates
a Parcour about the attitude of young
people toward the concepts of identity
and home as well as to the construct
of „Israel“.

Amit Jacobi

ten years. After two years of studying
acting at the Berlin School of Drama,

works, his specific interest is in the
combination of forms of visual theatre,
performance, video and dance, which
goes hand in hand with a substantial
emphasis on German-Israeli relations.
Galia Levy-Grad
Galia Levy-Grad wurde 1958 in
Frankreich geboren. Sie studierte an
der berühmten Bezalel Academy of
Art in Jerusalem am Ramat-Hashron
Art Institute, an der School of Visual
Theatre und Geschichtenerzählen an
der Beit Ariela. In ihren Arbeiten nutzt
sie Elemente des Schatten-, Objekt- und
Puppentheaters und verbindet sie zu
ihrem eigenen Erzähltheater.

Patricia O´Donovan
Patricia O´Donovan wurde in Argentinien

führenden Puppenspielerinnen Israels,

Meital Raz

Daniela Orvin
Daniela Orvin wurde in Berlin geboren und
ist in München und Israel aufgewachsen.
In ihren Fotoarbeiten treibt sie immer
wieder die Frage nach Entwurzelung
und Entfremdung um, die sie sowohl auf
ihre eigene Biografie als auch auf die
gesellschaftspolitische Lage bezieht. Sie
studierte am Midrasha College of Art und
gründete in Tel Aviv eine eigene Galerie für
Zeitgenössische Fotografie. Seit einiger
Zeit lebt sie wieder in Berlin.
Daniela Orvin was born in Berlin and
grew up in Munich and Israel. In her
photography, she is constantly driven
by the question of rootlessness and
alienation, which refers both to her own
biography as well as the socio-political
situation. She studied at the Midrasha
College of Art and founded a gallery for
contemporary photography in Tel Aviv.
For some time now, she has been back
in Berlin.

suchen, kommen die unterschiedlichsten
Tiere zur Besichtigung: Das Schwein, die
Ameise, die Häsin und die Nachtigall –
sie alle mögen das Haus, wollen aber
trotzdem nicht bleiben. Aber warum?
Mit dem israelischen Kinderbuchklassiker „Zimmer frei im Haus der
Tiere” schrieb die Schriftstellerin Leah
Goldberg eine Parabel über das friedliche
und respektvolle Zusammenleben
unterschiedlichster Kulturen in einer
Gesellschaft. Nach ihrer Emigration nach
Israel 1935 arbeitete Leah Goldberg als
Dichterin, Theaterkritikerin, Übersetzerin,
Redakteurin und Kinderbuchautorin.
Die Verlegerin Myriam Halberstam
gründete 2010 mit dem Ariella Verlag
den ersten jüdischen Kinderbuchverlag
Deutschlands. Gemeinsam mit Michal
Zamir, der Initiatorin der Hebräischen
Bücherei in Berlin der Ha-Sifriya haivrit be-Berlin liest sie abwechselnd
Ms. Chicken, Mr. Squirrel, Ms. Cuckoo
and Ms. Cat all live together in a house.
When they look for a new tenant for the
apartment on the top floor, a wide variety
of animals come to visit: the pig, the ant,
the rabbit and the nightingale – they all
love the house, but for some reason do
not want to stay. But why?
With the Israeli classic children’s book,
„A Flat for Rent (in the House of Animals)”,
author Leah Goldberg wrote a parable about
the peaceful and respectful coexistence
of different cultures within a society. After
immigrating to Israel in 1935, Leah Goldberg
worked as a poet, theatre critic, translator,
editor and children’s book author.
In 2010, the publisher Myriam
Halberstam, along with Ariella Publishing,
founded the first Jewish children’s book
publishing company in Germany. Together
with Michal Zamir, the initiator of the
Hebrew Library in Berlin Ha-Sifriya haivrit be-Berlin she will read alternately in
German and Hebrew from the original
Dira Lehaskir and the German translation.

William Sutcliffes Roman „Auf der
richtigen Seite“.
Der 13-jährige Joshua lebt mit
seiner Mutter und seinem Stiefvater in
Amarias, einer fiktiven Stadt, die den
israelischen Siedlungen der West Bank
ähnelt. Die schwerbewachte Mauer, die
Amarias umgibt, schirmt die Bewohner
beider Seiten, die seit jeher verfeindet
sind, hermetisch voneinander ab. Als
Joshua beim Fußballspielen der Ball über
einen Baustellenzaun fliegt, entdeckt
er direkt hinter der Mauer Reste einer
zerstörten Siedlung und einen Tunnel.
Von der Aussicht fasziniert, zum ersten
Mal in seinem Leben auf die andere Seite
der Mauer zu gelangen, folgt er dem
Tunnel. Doch was er auf der anderen
Seite sieht, bringt sein bisheriges Weltbild
gehörig ins Wanken. Joshua verirrt sich
in den unendlichen und unbekannten
Straßenfluchten und plötzlich ist er
der Fremde, der beleidigt und verfolgt

William Sutcliffe wurde 1971 in London
geboren. Er studierte Englisch an der
Cambridge University und verfasste
bislang sieben Romane, davon zwei für
junge Leser („Auf der richtigen Seite“;

Lotterie“). Seine Werke wurden in 25
Sprachen übersetzt. 2014 wurde William

Actors of the THEATER AN DER PARKAUE
read excerpts from William Sutcliffe’s
novel „The Wall”.
13-year-old Joshua lives with his
mother and stepfather in Amarias, a
fictitious town that is similar to the Israeli
settlements in the West Bank. The heavily
guarded wall that surrounds Amarias
hermetically separates the inhabitants
of both sides, who have always been
enemies, from each other. While Joshua is

playing soccer one day, the ball flies over
a constructions site fence and just behind
some ruined parts of the wall he discovers
a destroyed settlement and a tunnel.
Fascinated by the prospect of reaching
the other side of the wall for the first time
in his life, he follows the tunnel. But what
he sees on the other side shakes the very
foundations of his previous worldview.
Joshua gets lost in the never-ending and
unknown streetscape and suddenly, he is
the stranger who is insulted and chased.
At the last moment, a girl rescues him
and shows him the way back to the
tunnel. Back home in Amarias, he cannot
forget the people on the other side and
decides to return.
William Sutcliffe was born in London
in 1971. He studied English at Cambridge
University and has written seven novels so
far, among them, two for young readers
(„The Wall” and „The Circus of Thieves
and the Raffle of Doom”). His works have
been translated into 25 languages. In 2014
William Sutcliffe was nominated for the
prestigious Carnegie Medal. With „The
Wall”, he is on this year’s shortlist for the
German Youth Literature Prize.

die Herausgeber Norbert Kron und
sein israelischer Kollege Amichai
Shalev deutsche und israelische
Autoren, die ihren ganz persönlichen
Blick auf das jeweils andere Land
in kurzen Erzählungen, Essays,
Tagebucheinträgen oder Gedichten
festgehalten haben. Die Autoren stehen
exemplarisch für eine dritte Generation
von Deutschen und Israelis, in deren
Verhältnis neben der allgegenwärtigen
Vergangenheitsbewältigung und der
Auseinandersetzung mit historischer und
familiärer Schuld immer mehr aktuelle
Entwicklungen in Literatur, Alltag, Politik,
gesellschaftlichem und persönlichem
Leben in den Vordergrund treten.
Norbert Kron wurde 1965 in München
geboren und lebt seit 1992 als Schriftsteller,
ARD-Journalist und Kulturmacher in Berlin.

Liat Elkayam wurde 1975 in Tel
Aviv geboren und arbeitet seit ihrem
achtzehnten Lebensjahr als Journalistin.
Sie lebt in Tel Aviv als Autorin und
Redakteurin von „Haaretz“.

writer Liat Elkayam
In their anthology „We Do Not Forget,
We Go Dancing”, publisher Norbert Kron
and his Israeli colleague Amichai Shalev,
gather German and Israeli authors, who
have recorded their very personal views of
the other country in short stories, essays,
diary entries or poems. The authors are
exemplary of a third generation of Germans
and Israelis, in whose relationship, alongside
the omnipresent dealing of the past and
the dispute with the historical and familial
guilt, evermore present developments in
literature, daily life, politics, social and
personal life come to the fore.
Norbert Kron was born in Munich in 1965
and has lived in Berlin since 1992 as a writer,
ARD journalist and Cultural Manager.
Liat Elkayam was born in Tel Aviv in
1975 and has worked as a journalist since
she was 18. She lives in Tel Aviv and works
as a writer and editor for „Haaretz”.

Musik für die Inszenierung „Der Pfad
der Orangenschalen“ in der Regie von
Hannan Ishay verantwortlich.
Der Pianist und Bandleader Omer Klein
gehört zur Avantgarde der israelischen
Jazzmusiker. Anklänge an Bachs
Goldberg-Variationen, an die Musik der
Romantik und der Moderne sind in Kleins
Kompositionen ebenso zu erkennen wie
nordafrikanische Klänge. Immer wieder
erforscht Klein die Gemeinsamkeiten und
Gegensätze dieser Stile und verarbeitet sie
mit einem ausgeprägten Jazzverständnis
zu variantenreichen Improvisationen.
Omer Klein wurde 1982 in Netanya,
Israel,geboren. Als Jugendlicher begann
er sein Jazzstudium an der Thelma
Yellin High School of Arts nahe Tel Aviv
und gab ab seinem 16. Lebensjahr
Konzerte. 2005 ging er in die USA,
um am New England Conservatory in
Boston zu studieren. Inzwischen hat
er sechs Alben aufgenommen, die von
der Kritik hoch gelobt wurden. Omer
Klein lebt heute in Düsseldorf, wo er
2013 den Förderpreis für Musik erhielt.
Neben seiner Band komponiert Omer
Klein auch für das Theater. Für das
THEATER AN DER PARKAUE ist er für die
Pianist and bandleader Omer Klein
belongs to the avant-garde of Israeli
jazz musicians. Klein’s compositions are
reminiscent of Bach’s Goldberg Variations,
the music of the romantic and modern
periods as well as north African sounds.
Again and again, Klein explores the
similarities and contrasts of these styles
and, with a distinct understanding of jazz,
creates a variety of improvisations.
Omer Klein was born in 1982 in
Netanya, Israel. As a teenager, he began
his jazz studies at the Thelma Yellin High
School of Arts near Tel Aviv and gave
concerts from the age of 16. In 2005,
he went to the USA to study at the New
England Conservatory in Boston. In the
meantime, he has recorded six albums
that were praised by critics. Today, Omer
Klein lives in Dusseldorf where he received
a grant for music in 2013. In addition
to his band, Omer Klein also composes
for theatres. For the THEATER AN DER
PARKAUE, he is responsible for the music
in the production of „The Path of the
Orange Peels” directed by Hannan Ishay.

Ayelet Gundar-Goshen wurde 1982
geboren. Sie studierte Psychologie in
Tel Aviv, später Film und Drehbuch in
Jerusalem. Für ihre Kurzgeschichten,
Drehbücher und Kurzfilme wurde sie
bereits vielfach ausgezeichnet. Ihrem
ersten Roman, „Eine Nacht, Markowitz“
(2013), wurde der renommierte SapirPreis für das beste Debüt Israels
zugesprochen. Im Februar 2015 erschien
ihr neuer Roman „Löwen wecken“, der
die Frage nach Verantwortung und dem
Platz von illegalen Einwanderern in der
Gesellschaft radikal neu stellt.
Marko Martin wurde 1970 in
Burgstädt, Sachsen, geboren. Er erhielt
aus politischen Gründen in der DDR
Hochschulverbot. Im Mai 1989 reiste

er in die Bundesrepublik aus und
studierte an der FU Berlin Germanistik,
Politikwissenschaft und Geschichte.
Marko Martin arbeitet heute als
freier Autor in Berlin. In seinem 2012
erschienenen Buch „Kosmos Tel Aviv:
Streifzüge durch die israelische Literatur
und Lebenswelt“ porträtiert er israelische
Autoren und gibt einen Einblick in die
künstlerische Lebenswelt Tel Avivs.
Ron Segal wurde 1980 in Israel
geboren. Er hat an der Sam Spiegel Film
and Television School Jerusalem studiert.
Seit 2009 lebt er mit Unterbrechungen
in Berlin, zuletzt als Stipendiat der
Akademie der Künste. 2014 erschien
sein erster Roman „Jeder Tag wie
heute“ über einen neunzigjährigen
israelischen Holocaustüberlebenden, der,
zurück in Deutschland, beginnt, seine
Lebensgeschichte aufzuschreiben.
Michal Zamir lebt seit 2010 in Berlin
und gründete 2014 die „Ha-Sifriya haivrit be-Berlin“, die Hebräische Bücherei
Berlin. Ihre bislang noch private Bücherei
mit 2500 hebräischen Büchern öffnet
sie einmal im Monat für Konzerte und
Lesungen.

Marko Martin was born in 1970 in

Federal Republic and studied German

Marko Martin works as a freelance writer

Ron Segal was born in 1980 in Israel.

most recently as a fellow of the Academy
of Arts. His first novel, „Every Day Like
Today”, about a ninety-year-old Israeli
holocaust survivor who, while in Germany,
begins to write down his life story for the
first time, was published in 2014.
Michal Zamir has lived in Berlin since
2010 and founded the „Ha-Sifriya ha-ivrit
be-Berlin” (the Hebrew Library Berlin)
in 2014. Once a month she opens her as
of yet private library with 2500 Hebrew
books for concerts and readings.

Seit 2009 machen Christopher Colaço,
Markus Ehrlich, Florian Menzel, Philipp
Schaeper und Igor Spallati gemeinsam
als „The Major Minors” Musik. Ihre
musikalischen Wurzeln liegen im Jazz.
Das Leben der Stadt musikalisch zu
betrachten, ihre Stimmungen hörbar
einzufangen und Geschichten ohne
Worte zu erzählen, trug zu ihrem ganz
eigenen Sound bei. „The Major Minors”
schaffen eigenkomponierte Klänge zu
Film- und Bühnenproduktionen und
bestimmen bei Live-Auftritten landauf
wie landab den Herzschlag ihres
Publikums. Im Jahr 2013 wurden sie u.a.
mit dem Deutschen Filmpreis für den
Soundtrack zum Berliner IndependentFilm „Oh Boy“ ausgezeichnet. without using words has contributed

Major Minors” create originally composed
music for film and stage productions
and dictate the heartbeat of their
audience all over the country. In 2013,
they received, among others, the German
Film Award for the soundtrack to the
independent movie „Oh Boy”.
Since 2009, Christopher Colaço,
Markus Ehrlich, Florian Menzel, Philipp
Schaeper and Igor Spallati have made
music together as The Major Minors.
Their musical roots come from jazz.
To musically look at life in the city, to
audibly capture its moods and tell stories

Für Fachpublikum mit Avital Drovy
Seit 2002 existiert in Israel das in seiner
Form und Qualität weltweit einzigartige
„Dream Doctor Project”. Das Projekt
steht für die professionelle Verbindung
von Objekttheater und Clownerie mit
medizinischer Therapie und Behandlung.
Kranke Kinder, sowie psychisch erkrankte
Erwachsene werden von Clowns während
der Operation und über den gesamten
Behandlungszeitraum begleitet.
Im „Dream Doctor Project” arbeiten
in ganz Israel 70 angestellte Clowns
an 20 Krankenhäusern. Mit dem
neueingerichteten Studiengang Medical
Clowning an der Universität Haifa
erfolgte zudem eine Professionalisierung
dieses Berufsbildes.
Im Rahmen von Playground Israel
soll dieses Berufsbild in Berlin mit
Workshops vorgestellt werden. Hierzu
wird das THEATER AN DER PARKAUE
mit der Hochschule für Schauspielkunst
Ernst Busch, Abteilung Puppenspiel
wie auch mit dem Evangelischen
Krankenhaus Königin Elisabeth Herzberge
zusammenarbeiten.

Avital Drovy ist ausgebildete
Puppenspielerin und studierte
Psychologin. Sie arbeitet seit über 12
Jahren als Medical Clown und war
eines der ersten Mitglieder des „Dream
Doctor Project”. In einem ersten
Workshop über mehrere Stunden wird
sie gemeinsam mit Studenten des
Studiengangs Puppenspiel das Feld des
Medical Clownings untersuchen. Der
Fokus liegt hierbei darauf, Gegenstände,
welche im Krankenhaus alltäglich sind,
durch das Spiel zum Leben zu erwecken,
ihnen eine neue Zuschreibung zu
geben und Geschichten zu erzählen.
Des Weiteren wird Avital Drovy im
Krankenhaus Herzberge in einem
Vortrag und praktischen Beispielen
das „Dream Doctor Project” und die
Arbeit des Medical Clowns vorstellen.
Dieser Vortrag richtet sich zunächst
an Ärzte, Krankenhausleitungen und
Pflegepersonal aus ganz Berlin, aber
auch an Puppenspieler und Performer.

with Avital Drovy
The „Dream Doctor Project” has existed
in Israel since 2002, which in its form
and quality is unique throughout the
world. The project is committed to
the combination of object theatre
and clowning with medical therapy
and treatment. Sick children as well
as mentally ill people are supported
by clowns during the operation and
throughout the whole treatment process.
In the Dream Doctors Project,
70 employed „Clowns” work in 20
hospitals all over Israel. With the newly
established Medical Clowning program
at the University of Haifa, moreover, a
professionalization of this job description
has resulted.
As part of Playground Israel, this job
description is to be presented and taught
with workshops in Berlin. For this reason,
THEATER AN DER PARKAUE is working
together with the Ernst Busch Academy of
Dramatic Art’s Department of Puppetry
as well as the Queen Elisabeth Protestant
Hospital Herzberge.
Avital Drovy is a trained puppeteer
and studied psychologist. For over 12
years she has worked as a Medical Clown
and was one of the first members of
the Dream Doctor Project. In the first
workshop over several hours, she will
explore the field of Medical Clowning
together with students of puppetry.
The focus is on bringing objects, which

are commonplace in the hospital, to life
through play, to give them new features
and tell stories. In addition, Avital Drovy
will present the Dream Doctor Project
and the work of the Medical Clowns in
a lecture and practical examples at the
Hospital Herzberge. This lecture is initially
intended for doctors, hospital managers
and nursing staff from all over Berlin, but
also for puppeteers and performers.
