Performance information given in the catalog has been supplied by the
breeder.
BW,WW,YW
Birth weights, weaning and yearling weights are given as recorded at
S.G.B.I. adjusted weights are given when available at S.G.B.I., actuals
are given when recorded at S.G.B.I. and when adjusted weights are not
given at S.G.B.I. Weaning weight is adjusted to 205 days of age, and
yearling weight is adjusted to 365 days of age. All adjustments are
performed according to BIF standards.

EPDs
Birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and yearling weight (YW)
EPDs are given in plus or minus pounds of that trait, as recorded currently with S.G.B.I. Maternal milk (MAT) is given in pounds of weaning weight. Accuracy numbers are not given. The cattle are consigned
are young, have no or few progeny, so their EPD accuracies are very
low or are pedigree estimates. Facts to remember about EPDs are:
*EPDs are predictions of progeny performance and can be
useful tools for election.
*EPDs accuracy numbers must be considered. Accuracy and
accuracy numbers increase as more progeny data is available for the
EPD calculation. Accuracy numbers below 0.4 or 0.5 indicate that the
EPD number has little progeny data behind it, and accuracy is low.
Accuracies shown as PE or P are based on pedigree estimates only.
ULTRASOUND
Ultrasound data are most meaningful taken when the animal is between 11 and 15 months of age. This age corresponds to the approximate market age for commercial calves. Ultrasound data are shown in
the catalog only if taken during the 11 to 15 month age window, and
recorded at S.G.B.I. These data are indicators for carcass characteristics of the animal.
*REA- The estimation of the ribeye area at the 12th rib, given
in square inches.
*REA/CWT- The ratio of ribeye area (REA) to live weight
in hundreds of pounds (CWT). An indicator of the yield of loin in the
carcass. Average for Santa Gertrudis and Brangus type cattle is in the
1.0 to 1.1 range.
*IMF-The estimation of intramuscular fat in the loin. An
indicator of carcass quality grade (e.g., Choice, Select, or Standard). A
reading over 4.0 indicates a good probability for a “Choice” grade.
*BC- The fat thickness over the ribeye muscle at the 12th rib,
given in inches. Ideally less than 0.25

GAIN TEST DATA
Gain test programs are designed to determine the ability of animals to
gain weight quickly and efficiently. Ideally, animals come off a gain
test when they are “market” age (12 to 15 months of age). Programs
are conducted at the ranch or at gain test facilities, and last for 112 to
120 days. The average gain for a set of animals on a test will depend
upon conditions for that test. It is the ratio to average for an animal
that determines where he stands in his peer group, and it is most
significant when the peer group is large. Some gain tests offer the opportunity to compare animals from different ranches, and some from
different breeds. Gain test data are reported in the catalog when supplied by the breeder. Average daily gain (ADG in pounds per day) for
the test and average daily gain ratio (in percent) are given. The ratio
is the ratio to average, and number greater than 100 indicates that the
animal was above average for his peer group. Weight per day of age
(WDA in pounds per day) is the final weight divided by age in days.
The ratio is also given, and is interpreted the same as for ADG.

SCREENING STANDARDS
Animal Identification

Quality and Soundness
Valley B Enterprises is donating a pair of historical Santa Service Show boxes to benefit the
SGBI Shows and Exhibits High Point Awards
to be auctioned off at the Mt. Laurel Sale.
Everything has a story to be told. I purchased these
boxes from Gene McCarter in the early ninties after
he had brought them back from Texas after moving back to Tennessee. These show boxes were
the big thing back in the day. They were used by
Santa Service Huntsville,Texas, McCarter Cattle
Service,Tenn. and Valley B Enterprises Cleveland
Tenn and then stored for 15 years. These boxes
probably have traveled close to 2 million miles. Oh
the stories they could tell ! The Show Barns, the
Trucks and trailers,the Herdsmen, and what about
all the contents thru the years, These boxes will
sell with show supplies and tack inside from the
70’s,80’s and 90’s. It is with great pleasure for us to
support such a good cause and effort so be prepared to buy in November at the Mt. Laurel Sale.

1.
All animals must be in good flesh and show sale preparation. Any
animal not meeting these requirements will be automatically removed
from the sale offering.
2.
All sale animals must be free of genetic defects such as hernia,
double muscling, free martins, etc. Any female exhibiting udder problems
or signs of a possible problem will be removed from the sale offering All
cattle offered and accepted for sale must be free of all disqualification’s
stated in the SGBI Standard of Excellence.
3.
Sale animals must not be surgically altered, with the exception
of dehorning. All cattle cosmetically dehorned or scooped must be
completely healed
4.
A calf at side must have the potential to be a purebred, or Star
Five registered animal.
5.
For reasons of safety, points must be tipped on all animals with
horns.
6.
Ultrasound needs to be completed between the ages of 11 and 15
months. The technician doing the ultrasound needs to be identified.
Fertility
Any male or female exhibiting visual signs of infertility or extremely low
fertility will be removed from the sale.
1.
Females must be born after January 1, 2005 and be a guaranteed
breeder by seller.
a. All females must be guaranteed safe in calf by a licensed
veterinarian by 26 months of age and to calve before 36
months of age.
b. With calf at side over six (6) months of age must be palpated
safe in calf by a licensed veterinarian. Females with calf over
nine (9) months of age must be palpated safe in second
trimester by a licensed veterinarian.
c. With calf less than four months, may sell as exposed or open.
d. Open Donor Cows must sell with a recipient cow, certified
to be pregnant by a licensed veterinarian resulting from a
flush within six months of sale date. Recipient cow must
be certified pregnant by a licensed vet within thirty (30)
days. Donor cow must be certified by a licensed vet as a
satisfactory breeder within thirty (30) days of the sale or
must have a natural calf at side not more that six months of
age.
e. All other guarantees will be represented by the seller in the
sale catalog.
f. Any female four years or older must have a record of calving
interval.
2.
Bulls
Bull must be fifteen months or older and must be fertility tested
and be confirmed a satisfactory breeder within thirty (30) days of
the sale by a licensed vet.
Health
Health paper issued within thirty (30) days of sale date. Animals
must be eligible for interstate shipment, except as otherwise
announced.
a.
Heifers over four (4) months of age are required to be
calfhood vaccinated for brucellosis unless originating from a brucellosisfree state.
The screening criteria shall be done by representatives for
sale management and their screening results will be given to sales
management.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Bidding: Each lot on which there are two or more bids will be sold to the
highest bidder.
Disputes: The auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and
his decision shall be final.
Terms: The terms are cash or check to be paid the day of the sale unless
prior arrangements have been made.
Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as
sold, but not delivered until settlement has been made.
Registration Papers: Registration certificates on each animal will be
delivered direct to S.G.B.I. after the buyer’s check has cleared the bank.
You will receive your certificate direct from the office of S.G.B.I.
Announcements: Announcements from the auction box will take
precedence over the printed matter in the sale catalog.
Liability: All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. The owner or
sale management assumes no liability, legal or otherwise for any accidents
which may occur.
Screening: All Sale Cattle shall be inspected by a representative and meet
the “SGBI Accredited Sale Program Screening Standards.”
Health: Health paper issued within thirty (30) days of sale date eligible for
interstate shipment except as otherwise announced:
A. Heifers over four (4) months of age are required to be calfhood vaccinated
for brucellosis.Guarantees: All weaned animals that sell are guaranteed
breeders. Females safe in calf or nursing a calf are considered to be
breeders without further guarantee. Any animal that has not proven itself
a breeder within six months after sale date, or six months after reaching 18
months of age, if in healthy condition and meeting the health regulations
of the state may be returned to the seller’s ranch at the buyer’s expense.
The seller reserves the right of trying, for a period of six months, to prove
the animal a breeder. If proven a breeder, the animal will be returned to
the buyer at the buyer’s expense. Should the animal fail to prove a breeder
in a specified period, an adjustment will be made of equal value or a refund
of full purchase price. The return of the full purchase price shall in any
case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. If a female sold as “open”
proves to be with calf, the purchaser may return the animal to the seller
for a refund of the full purchase price or for another animal of equal value,
whichever is acceptable to the purchaser. It shall be the obligation of the
purchaser to bear any expense incurred for transportation. Animals selling
in the sale sell on their own merit.
Semen: All semen sold must be from a Blood Typed/DNA Fingerprinted bull
on record with S.G.B.I.
Rights and Obligations: The above terms and conditions of the sale
constitute a contract between the buyers and sellers of each animal and
shall be equally binding upon both. Animals resold, following purchase
in the sale, shall constitute a separate transaction, and the rights and
obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the
terms and conditions of this sale.
All animals penned on display for sale are considered “in the Sale” and are
subject to Sale Commission. Animals not run through the Sale Ring will be
assessed a commission based on the Average Sale Price for the sale.
