Current Magazine - The Witham Staple
~1~
Welcome to the October 2016 Issue of The Witham Staple
September has come to an end, hopefully the harvest is all safely gathered in. We
have had the harvest moon (the last full moon of summer), the autumn equinox
has happened and our nights are slowly pulling in day by day. At the end of
October British summertime comes to an end once again. Don’t forget to turn your
th
clocks back on Sunday 30 October and avoid being an hour earlier arriving than
anyone else! Do you ever wonder, is this time in the year one of the strangest, a
real mixed bag, even a lucky dip? If the sun shines it’s hot, even reaching a record
high since 1911 of 34.4c just a few weeks back, if it doesn’t shine though it’s
damp and miserable. When rain comes it’s anything from fine to hard and vertical
or even horizontal at times. You’ve cut and pruned everything back and with a
blast of light, a bit of heat and a splash of rain it all shoots back into life. As you
look around the garden and down on that pesky weed are you not convinced you
dug it up just the other day!! Weather’s lucky dip, stick your hand in and pull us out
a bit of brightness, if it’s rain you’ve drawn then stay in the dry and read on...
We love to receive articles from all corners of the community

THANK YOU
Jennie. I would just like to thank my family and friends who produced such an
array of food for the afternoon tea for my recent 70th birthday celebrations, also
the wonderful "Over the Hill" musicians who gave us an amazing afternoon of
entertainment. To all my family and many friends who came and so generously
bought me cards (and flowers) gave to my chosen charities and gave me such
lovely memories of the day. I could not have asked for more. I am so happy to say
that £600 has been split between and taken to, Ronald McDonald House,
Birmingham and to Birmingham Children's Hospital. I would also like to say a
special thank you to my friends Helen and Dave who never stopped all day and to
Debbie Parker for never saying no to me no matter what I asked of her. Thank you
all so very much. Jennie x
Dr Clare Farrell. Would like to thank you all for your kind messages and my lovely
garden tools, I am looking forward to putting them into good use. My decision to
retire has been a difficult one. Being part of the Bassingham Surgery team for the
last 21 years has been a privilege and I will miss all my colleagues and all my
patients. I wish you all health and happiness. Dr Farrell.

LOCAL 8 YEAR OLD SIGNS FOR SHEFFIELD UNITED
Leo-Beck started playing football two years ago for Witham St Hughs juniors. His
manager immediately spotted his goalkeeping talents and put him in goal. After
just three months playing he was identified by a Nottingham Forest scout and
asked to attend a six week trial at their development centre in Grantham. After six
weeks they asked him to stay and after another three months he was asked into
the academy to train with them. He then stayed there and also got some external
coaching from Barry Richardson on a Wednesday night. He trained with the
academy for six months and in that time was also asked to train with Grimsby
Town, Lincoln City and Notts County and all three offered him a contract for this
season. He trailed with them all and made the decision to move to Notts County.
Three weeks before the end of the season Barry Richardson approached and said
that Sheffield United would like to offer him a trail so he went up for a training
session. After just one session they asked him to play a game. After he played the
game they also offered him a contract to play this coming season. After a
weekend of decision making he accepted the offer at Sheffield United and is now
officially a Sheffield United player. Both his mum Rachel and I are extremely
proud of his achievements and more proud of the hard work he puts in every
week. This season he is going to be lucky enough to put his skills against the likes
of Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United. He played his first game of
the season this last Sunday just gone (4th September) against Nottingham Forest
where the team won 11 - 2 and 13 - 4 in their 2 games.

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS SUCCESS
Visitors and residents of North Kesteven had the
chance last weekend to discover the delights that
the district has to offer. Heritage Open Days is a
four-day festival designed to celebrate our national
architecture and heritage. It’s also a great chance to see some stunning buildings
that are not normally open to the public. This year 15 venues from North Kesteven
took part in the national festival along with some wonderful events including
special exhibitions and guided walks enabling you to discover the architectural
treasures that brings local history and culture to life. North Kesteven District
Council’s visitor venues, Cogglesford Watermill, Cranwell Aviation Heritage
Centre and Navigation House all took part offering free refreshments and
children’s trails. Cogglesford Watermill was also in action on the Sunday giving
visitors a great experience watching the mill stones turn to grind the grain to make
their own flour. 650 visitors in total passed through the doors discovering the
venues fascinating history. Visitors were pleasantly surprised with having learnt
some amazing histories as well as knowing that these three venues are all free to
visit all year round.

FROM THE RECTORY
On the television news recently many of us watched the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s
Square in Rome as Pope Francis declared Mother Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint. A
friend commented that this recognition of Mother Teresa was long overdue as her
work with the homeless and unloved, particularly in Calcutta, was simply ‘something
else.’
‘So what makes a saint, a saint?’ asked someone else a few days later and our
conversation fell, not to the process that the Catholic church must follow before
anyone can be declared a saint, but more to those many unknown and un-sung saints
whose lives impact on our own day by day.
For many of us the idea of ‘saintliness’ belongs entirely to others. But over the years I
have come across countless unsung saints – those people who quietly go about their
daily lives, performing routine small acts of kindness to neighbours and friends. The
person who offers transport to someone who no longer drives; the person who
routinely collects a prescription for an elderly neighbour; the person who week in and
week out helps out in their local primary school, to name but a few. Within our villages
I am finding there are quiet saints who help keep our churches open every day, who
help keep the buildings and the gardens and grounds of all our churches in their well
maintained states. Doubtless you will be able to think of people you know who are
‘saints in the background’, not remembered on any particular saints’ day, but who
quietly offer acts of service and support to others.
Looking back at the life of Mother Teresa, there are many quotes attributed to this
newest of our saints. I leave you with these few as food for thought this month: ‘Let us
always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.’ ‘Spread
love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.’
And my favourite Mother Teresa words are these, apparently written on the wall of her
room in Calcutta:
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centred.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten.
Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.
Every blessing, Dee

people who would like to join the different sections of the Bassingham Scout
Group and we are in need of an additional Leader to help run the Cub pack to
join in and help with the various activities and keep the group going. If you live in
the area and think that working with young people in this way could be something
you would enjoy then why not come along to one of the sessions to have a look.

RESIDENCE NIL RATE BAND AND EXISTING WILLS
To claim this additional allowance against Inheritance Tax from April 2017 it is
essential to ensure your Will contains the necessary conditions to qualify. The
main condition is that your private residence must be left to your direct
Descendants.
Existing single wills which leave the property to direct descendants need no
alteration.
Existing Mirror wills for married couples/civil partnerships which leave the
property to direct descendants on second death need no alteration. The
transferable RNRB (i.e. for both parties) is available at second death.
Mirror Wills for non – married couples do not qualify for the transferable RNRB
on second death but only the single RNRB provided the property is left to direct
descendants on the second death.
Property Protection Trust Wills for married couples/civil partnerships do
qualify for RNRB and transferable RNRB provided both half shares of the house
are left to direct descendants on second death.
Asset Protection Trust Wills for married couples/civil partnerships qualify for
RNRB and transferable RNRB if both estates are left to direct descendants on
second death.
PPT Wills and APT Wills for non- married couples will only qualify for the
single RNRB providing the estate (or in the case of a PPT Will, a half share of the
house) is left to direct descendants on second death.
For more complex Wills such as Revocable Life interest Trust Wills you
should obtain the advice of your Will Writer over action to be taken. Bear in mind
all of this is only important if your total estate exceeds £325K at date of death or
£650K for married couples/civil partners. If in any doubt consult your local Will
Writer for assurance and then complete all your preparations with a Lasting
Power of Attorney and a comprehensive Funeral Plan.

SPIRES & STEEPLES CHALLENGE.
th
Taking place on Sunday 16 October, the challenge is probably one of the
toughest but most rewarding marathons you’ll ever run! It is a real test of
endurance pushing the boundaries and designed to drag you out of your comfort
zone. Now in its ninth year, the Spires & Steeples Challenge is a 26 or 13 mile run
or walk testing your physical strength, stamina, and mental grit. With no podiums,
winners, or clocks to race against, it’s not about how fast you can cross the finish
line; it’s a challenge that emphasizes teamwork, solidarity, and accomplishing
something truly great. Starting in Lincoln or Metheringham, the route follows the
Spires and Steeples Arts & Heritage Trail, an off road trail that follows way marked
public footpaths and bridleways crossing open fields and countryside lanes
enabling you to experience the beautiful countryside that North Kesteven has to
offer. All participants will cross the finish line at the National Centre for Craft and
Design in Sleaford. Entries cost £18 per person for the 26 mile run/walk and £15
per person for the 13 mile run/walk. Participants must be 16 years and over to
enter the 26 mile run, however anyone aged 14-15 years may enter the 26 mile
walk or 13 mile walk / run but must be accompanied by an adult.

HARMONY LINCS BARBERSHOP CHORUS
Seven members of our Chorus attended an annual event
entitled “Harmony College” which was held at Nottingham
University over the last weekend in August.
Organised by the British Association of Barbershop Singers, the weekend offered
a wide variety of activities including full chorus coaching, quartet guidance and
individual voice development. Some three hundred singers from all over the UK
attended and the weekend provided a great opportunity to make new friends and
to learn new skills. Experienced coaches were brought in from the UK and from
America to ensure the quality of the courses. We are proud of the fact that two of
our chorus members were on the staff this year.
Rehearsals have also been a little short on numbers lately because four of our
chorus were selected for the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar at Lincoln Cathedral.
We also have chorus members who are active in folk singing in the area and one
representative in the Cathedral Consort. This wider experience supports the
chorus as we seek to improve our unaccompanied four part harmony style of
singing. We shall welcome them all back as we approach the busy Autumn period.
th
We stage our free “Learn to Sing in Harmony” Course started on September 13
at the City of Lincoln Academy for four weeks and then we look forward to
producing our own “Voices in Harmony” Show at the Terry O’Toole Theatre on
Friday 18th November.
Full details of the above events are on our website: harmonylincs.co.uk

LITTLE DARTERS
EXTENDS CHILDREN’S ADVENTURE AND PLAY
A new extension to the award-winning Little Darters outdoor play area at the
Whisby Natural World Centre has opened, extending free opportunities for
adventurous play. Under the second phase of a £250,000 investment by owners
North Kesteven District Council in facilities at the popular free-access attraction,
the Wildlife Adventure Area has been re-modeled to increase the potential for
more physically demanding thrills and challenges. There is now a new look-out
tower, assault course, balance beam, climbing net, fireman’s pole and scramble
board, extending Little Darters’ appeal to older children. This adds to the existing
attractions which include water chutes and sand pits, super-sized wooden
creatures to climb on, rope bridges and towers to clamber over and an
underground cave giving a mole’s eye view in the world. Through the refresh,
Little Darters now inspires children of all ages to be more active, more often.
Inside the centre, the new Otters’ Reach play area continues to be a real hit,
bringing adventurous play to those too small to fully explore the outdoor wonders
of Little Darters. Little Darters was initially opened in 2009 by the TV wildlife
presenter Michaela Strachan and quickly won an award as the best-designed
children’s play facility of its kind in the country. It all adds to the free attractions
and facilities which form a part of the much-valued Whisby Nature Park
experience. The Nature Park is open dawn to dusk every day and the Natural
World Centre from 10am to 5pm. Both are entirely free apart from a £2 day-long
parking fee – proceeds of which finance the ongoing improvements and
investment and are easily accessed from the southern end of Lincoln Bypass. In
the final phase of improvements, the centre’s basement is being remodeled to
provide a conference and exhibition gallery and a separate meeting room.
Repeatedly awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, the Natural World
Centre remains popular with approximately 200,000 visitors each year.
Both Otter’s Reach and Little Darters can form the core to children’s party
experiences arranged through the Centre. Details on 688868 or

water area - little tots; Otter’s Reach – 3 to 8 years; Little Darters, in general 4+

COUNCIL SUPPORTS LAUNCH OF 105
North Kesteven District Council is backing the launch of a new number that aims
to support members of the public if they ever experience a power cut. Research
has shown that many people don’t know who to contact during a power cut and
wrongly call the electricity supplier they pay their bill to. 105 has been set up to
help the public get through to their local electricity network operator – the
company responsible for the power network. It’s a free, easy-to-remember number
that people can call to report or get information about a power cut in their area and
it puts the caller through to those who will repair their network and restore their
power.
105 is available to electricity customers in England, Scotland and Wales. The
number can be accessed from most landlines and mobile phones. It doesn’t
matter who you choose to buy electricity from – anyone can call 105. The service
is jointly funded by electricity network operators – the companies that manage the
cables, wires and substations into homes and businesses. People can also call
105 if they spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put
them, or someone else, in danger. If there’s a serious immediate risk to life the
emergency services should be called.
Visit powercut105.com to find out more about 105 and electricity operators.
AND THE WINNER IS…
North Kesteven District Council’s second photographic competition opened
last October in a bid to encourage people to get out and about and explore
what’s right on their doorstep and showcase their favourite place in NK.
Open from October 2015 to June 2016, people were asked to capture their
favourite place in the district, whether it be a favourite walking spot or local historic
site; the tourism team at North Kesteven District Council invited residents to
capture the distinctiveness of the district and the wonderful things we have to see
and do. The competition closed in July and from then all entries travelled to
Heckington Show, Cogglesford Watermill in Sleaford and North Hykeham Town
Council where visitors were able to vote for their favourite images. The most
popular images were then put into the team’s 2017 calendar which will be on sale
soon. The winner of this year’s competition was ‘Nightingale at Whisby’ by Leslie
Marshall. Steve Hatton from Electric Egg who judged this year’s entries said
“Electric Egg are delighted to pick ’Nightingale at Whisby’ as the winner of this
year’s photo competition. Wildlife photography requires great technical skill, an
eye for composition and patience. The judges thought the photograph was not
only technically very proficient but also that the use of the branches as a natural
frame gave the image a pleasing and balanced composition.” Leslie will not only
have her image featured on the front of the calendar but will also get to spend half
a day with Steve to gain some hands on advice about professional photography.
You can view all of this year’s entry on the tourism team’s Facebook Page
facebook.com/heartoflincs. For more information about great places to visit and
things to do in North Kesteven, visit www.heartoflincs.com or email
[email protected].
The winning photo can also be viewed on the witham staple web site.
