You stay with your child who can play indoors and outdoors with sand, water and other fascinating things. The costs are low, usually £1or £2. Charges may be higher for indoor play activities. Page 17 Parent and toddler groups (stay and play sessions) Parents and carers can make friends at these drop-in groups while babies and toddlers play. Parents and carers stay and play with their children so these groups do not need to register with the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted). There is usually a small charge for coffee, juice and running costs. Parties Get some ideas for children’s parties at local leisure centres and other venues. Sport and outdoor activities Find out about football, swimming and other sports clubs as well as outdoor fun at local farms and parks. Islington has provided funding, training and advice to many providers of childcare, play and youth and leisure services to help ensure that the needs of disabled children are met. However, not all services will be suitable for everyone. The facilities available and the levels of staff experience and training will vary from place to place. It is advisable to contact the provider to discuss your needs and what they can offer. For full details of the help available in the Islington area for children and young people aged 0-25 with special educational needs and disabilities, visit the Local Offer pages on Islington’s website. Islington Shorts Breaks for disabled children and young people The term ‘short breaks’ describes a range of services that: Enable disabled children and young people to take part in enjoyable activities that will have a positive effect on their health and wellbeing. Support the families of disabled children by giving them a break from their caring responsibilities. Islington has a duty to provide access to short break services for all disabled children and young people aged 0-18 who live in the borough. There are different levels of short break to meet the different needs of disabled children, young people and their families. Universal services are suitable for disabled children with lower level needs. Targeted services are aimed at disabled children assessed as having severe and complex needs that cannot be met through universal services alone. Specialist services are for disabled children and families assessed as having the highest level of needs. Further details are set out in the Short Breaks statement on the Islington website. Access to targeted and specialist short breaks services is by assessment. You can find out if you are already on the list of eligible families by contacting the Short Breaks team.
