Spring/Summer 2012
ILI Parent/Guardian Association
We would like to invite every Independent Living, Inc. parent,
guardian and immediate family member to participate in the
Independent Living, Inc. Parent Guardian Association (ILIPGA).
NEW!
The purpose of the PGA is to advocate for clients of ILI, assist with raising funds to
support client activities and needs, and a forum for support of parents/guardians of
those with developmental disabilities.
Suzette Jackson, one of our parents is leading the group and she has written a personal message inviting all of ILI’s parents and guardians to be a part of this special
group.
Dear Parents:
I am Suzette Jackson and I am a mother of a special needs adult. I am a passionate person when it comes to the
disabled/special needs children and adults. I recently saw my home town give an
award to a local disabled man for being the Person of the Year. I felt so good for
that man. He is what we as adults need to be. We need to be caring and helpful to
all. I want to see our new Parent Group grow and be able to help all our clients.
Please become involved with me and help show your support..

In 1968, the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation created Special Olympics. Since then it has become the
world's largest program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual
disabilities. For these individuals, sports and physical activities are the quickest, surest road to good health,
personal growth, and self-confidence. Being always told "You can't do it," Special Olympics says "You can
do it. All you need is a chance."
Originating in 1970, Arkansas held it’s first Summer Games with 283 athletes competing in various track
and field events and has grown to a competition program for athletes wanting to train and compete in athletics, aquatics, softball, volleyball, unified football, powerlifting, bocce and cycling. Other Special Olympics
Arkansas sports include: basketball, bowling, ice speed and figure skating, floor hockey and gymnastics.
In May ILI’s Team Liberators had 29 clients participate in the Arkansas State Games. Team members participated in the 25m Walk, 50m Dash, 100m Dash, 100m Walk, Standing Long Jump, Motorized Wheelchair
Race, Running Long Jump, Shot Put, Softball Throw and Bocce.
Special Thanks for A Night to Remember ...
March 17th was truly, “A Night to Remember!” ILI clients, staff and everyone in the
community that participated will always have fond memories of ILI’s Prom.
We sincerely appreciate the Harrison Regional Chamber of Commerce—Boone County
Leadership Institute for selecting ILI and hosting the first-ever Prom for our clients!
Thank you to all our sponsors & donors, without you an event like this would not be possible!
