Here’s the second edition of Your Mag - we hope you enjoy it. It’s
summertime, so max out your 3 in 1 card and hop on a bus and visit some
of the venues, shops and businesses that offer a discount - they are all
listed in this mag, and more are being added all the time to the website
www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk
In this issue we’ve got a big feature on sports. As the weather (hopefully)
hots up, why not visit a leisure centre, swimming pool - or simply catch a
bus to the beach and chill for a day?
Happy summer!

GET SPORTY
THIS SUMMER!
IT’S FUN, YOU MAKE FRIENDS
AND IT KEEPS YOU FIT!
Do you see yourself as the next
Wayne Rooney, hammering home
goals from outside the area, or
hitting sixes all over the ground like
Andrew Flintoff? Or maybe you’re
more of a Paula Radcliffe style
marathon runner or tennis ace like
Maria Sharapova? Whatever your
sporting bag, there are places all
over West Sussex to help you get
started on the road to success.
Since England won the Ashes in
2005, and with the rise of fast
paced 20-20 matches, cricket
has shed its old man image to
become one of the most popular
sports around. To many, cricket is
England’s national sport, and is a
great way to spend the summer
and involves a wide range
of skills.
4
Most local clubs have ‘colts’ youth
teams for all age groups, and
www.sussexcricket.co.uk has a
full list of contact details for clubs
near you.
The England team hasn’t been
doing that well recently, failing
to get into Euro 2008, but with
our club sides doing better in
Europe there’s still hope for English
football. You can find the nearest
club to you by visiting
www.sussexfa.com
Visit www.sussexsport.org for loads of sporty stuff
England has been doing better at rugby,
getting into the World Cup final last year.
The website www.rugbyinsussex.org.uk
has a list of local clubs.
Golf isn’t just a game for the over-40s.
Hawaiian star Michelle Wie turned professional
at 15 and maybe you’ll be the next young golf
champion. www.sussexgolfguide.com has
all the local clubs and courses.
Perhaps you’d rather be the next
British tennis star like Andy Murray.
www.tennis-sussex.org.uk has
information on all the clubs
throughout the county.
If you don’t want to join a club,
then just a kick-around of football
in the garden is a laugh, or
organise a game of rounders on
the beach on a summer day.
You can go jogging (it’s free!),
rollerblading, skateboarding,
swimming, netball, stoolball,
athletics, work out in the
gym...anything goes - just
get going!!

GIRL
POWER
Two girls from West Sussex
are showing that whatever
boys can do they can do
better, by aiming for the
top in sports normally
dominated by men.
Holly Colvin was only 15 when she first played cricket for England,
becoming the youngest English cricketer ever to play in a test.
If this wasn’t enough, she went on to take two wickets in two balls
against Australia on her debut and has since been a regular in the
England side.
Holly, from Middleton on Sea, first got into cricket through her brother.
“
“
“
“
HE’S THREE YEARS OLDER THAN ME AND HAD NO-ONE TO PLAY
WITH SO I HAD TO HELP HIM OUT.
”
She started playing in the boys’ team with him.
WHEN I FIRST STARTED, THERE WEREN’T MANY GIRLS PLAYING,
AND GIRLS’ CRICKET WASN’T REALLY ADVERTISED.
”
”
Holly was soon spotted by former Sussex captain John Barclay who picked
her for the boys’ district team.
THROUGH HIM I GOT INTO PLAYING GIRLS’ CRICKET
Holly, now 18, would like more young
people to take an interest in cricket,
and hopes this will revive the popularity
of the sport:
6
I THINK WE SHOULD
ALSO ENCOURAGE MORE
YOUNGSTERS TO WATCH
CRICKET AND TRY AND
INSPIRE THEM TO GET
INVOLVED IN THE SPORT AND IT SHOULD BE
PLAYED IN SCHOOLS.
”
says Holly.
Following in Holly’s footsteps is 11 year-old Lily Hounsome. But unlike
Holly, Lily hopes to make her name in the traditionally male-orientated
world of boxing.
Although usually viewed as a sport based on strength and power, in
reality modern boxing is more about fitness and agility.
“
I DON’T FIGHT AGAINST BOYS, BUT I TRAIN AGAINST BOYS
As for the future she hopes to be involved in more
competitive fights and emulate her boxing heroes by
winning a championship herself.
”
says Lily.
Holly and Lily both prove that by getting involved and
taking part in traditionally male sports girls can beat
the boys at their own game!
”
Words: Steven Galloway

I STARTED BOXING WHEN I WAS EIGHT. THE BEST THING IS IT KEEPS ME FIT

Tom, 11, listed being skint and angry fast drivers as his major annoyances.

after going to the loo and friends boasting about having the latest gear.

Reading is the perfect pastime - you can do it rain or shine, and you
don’t have to splash out on expensive kit.
for free
books as you can borrow them
You don’t even have to buy the
from your local library.
10
Teenagers are one of the least likely groups to pick up a book so if you are already a keen reader then why not try and convert
your friends?
Library staff are keen to help you with information about great books,
CDs and DVDs. Email, phone or pop in to your local library to find out
more.
Alternatively, go to www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk and send an
e-postcard to your mates telling them all about your latest great read.
The 36 libraries and three mobile libraries in West Sussex will be holding
events throughout the year to open up the wonderful world of books.
There are themes each month including:
June - Reading Escapes.
Hot holiday reads will be top of the lists this month. Escape into a
different world within a book or simply enjoy a blockbuster on the beach.
Activities to try: If you’re a footie fan then discover all the sporty books to
tie-in with Euro 2008, or delve into a book to escape the wall-to-wall
coverage! You could also set up a ‘holiday reads’ library at school.
Other bookish things taking place will be regular rounds by The Early
Years Bookbus, lots of activities and the Children’s Summer Reading
Challenge which this year will be Team Read.

the risks to
and safety.
Young boozers can be losers and a survey by charity Crime Concern
revealed that many young people start binge drinking as young as 13, and
almost a quarter said their drinking landed them in trouble with the police.
In West Sussex, a lifestyle survey among 14 and 15 year olds showed one in
10 of you regularly get drunk.
Matt, 15, from Bognor Regis, said:
“
LOADS OF MY FRIENDS GET TOTALLY DRUNK EVERY WEEKEND, USUALLY ON
CHEAP CIDER. SOME OF THEM HANG AROUND OUTSIDE THE LOCAL SHOP
AND TRY AND GET ADULTS TO BUY THEM BOOZE.
”
Alcohol is often regarded as ‘safe and legal’ but its effects can be as potent
and damaging as any hard drug, and needs to be treated with respect.
But one drink too many, or necking bottles one after another, can make
you mouthy, loud, aggressive, slur your words, and you risk doing things
you don’t really want like having unsafe sex or getting into cars with
drunk drivers.
12
THE LAW: In the UK, under 18s
cannot buy alcohol and any shops
that serve underage drinkers could
face a big fine and lose their
licence. And don’t ask adults to
buy it for you! If you drink
in a public place the police may
take the alcohol from you and
chuck it away.
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF: In
the interests of your health, it’s
best to lay off alcohol while your
body is still developing, but if you
do drink, then take these tips to
stay safe:
μ
μ
μ
Make sure you are with
people you can trust…
drinking alone can be
dangerous - being sick choking - worse.
Don’t accept drinks from
strangers, as they could
be spiked.
Drink water or soft drinks
in between the booze to
keep you hydrated and cut
down the killer head the
next morning.

SIGNS
OF
THETIMES
THESE TWO HANNAHS
HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE
TO ROAD SAFETY IN
THEIR VILLAGES
There are nearly 3,800 casualties on the roads of West Sussex each year and
we need to get that figure down.
Go to www.westsussex.gov.uk to find out about road safety schemes.
Hannah Mudd, 10, launched a safety campaign
on behalf of horse riders.
She is a keen rider and often has to cross a
busy road on her pony to get to bridleways.
She persuaded West Sussex County Council
to put up signs warning drivers to be alert to
horses and riders near her home in Funtington.
Meanwhile another Hannah has been 'signing' the way to safety in another
West Sussex village.
Hannah Wardle, nine, won a poster competition to raise awareness of the
dangers of speeding in Tangmere along Meadow Way and Tangmere Road.
Hannah's design has been turned into metal signs and she also won a book
token for her efforts to persuade motorists to stick to the speed limits.

they are duty bound to keep anything
you tell them private - even if you are under 16.
So whether you want to ask advice about an annoying
sniffle, or how to get reliable contraception, your doctor
will not pass on that information to your parents without
your permission.
Of course, it can really help to talk to your parents
first, especially if you are thinking about having sex
for the first time.
You don’t need your parents’ permission to see your doctor.
All patients can see their own health records. Your parents or guardian
should not see your records unless you have given permission.
Exceptions? In rare circumstances, your doctor may believe that keeping
a secret you have told them puts you in severe danger, for example, if you
were being hurt in some way. They might want to involve other health
professionals in helping you…but they should still tell you first.
Go to www.westsussex.gov.uk and look on the A-Z under F for Family
Planning and you will find the nearest Family Planning centre that deals
especially with under 25s.
Ask Brook - go to www.brook.org.uk where you can get info through
their helpline on 0800 0185 023, via a secure on-line enquiry service, or by
texting them.
www.mariestopes.org.uk has a chat room where you can ask your
question confidentially. They also have a section of their website specially
for young people, and you can also visit likeitis.org which is packed with
useful help on a whole range of areas including sex, contraception,
periods, love bugs (STIs), teenage pregnancy and relationships.

FAQs
3 in 1
= Frequently As
ked Questions
Who is eligible for the Your 3 in 1
Card?
If you live in West Sussex, are aged
5-19 and in full-time education.
How do I apply?
Download an application form at
www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk
or call 01243 777330 to get one
sent to you.
Does it cost anything to apply?
No, the 3 in 1 card is FREE.
Can part-time further education
students apply?
The scheme is only open to students
in full-time education. This is
defined as 12 hours or more of
guided learning per week, for a
minimum of ten weeks, on further
education courses in school sixth
forms, sixth form colleges and
Further Education colleges.
Can I apply for the 3 in1 Card if I
already get free or concessionary
transport to school?
Yes - you can use the 3 in 1 Card for
bus journeys outside of the school
run, for example at weekends, and
also take advantage of the card's
discounts and proof of age ID.
28
Can children who attend
independent schools or who are
taught by home tuition apply for
the card?
Yes.
What discounts can I get and where
will they be available?
Go to
www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk
for all the latest information on
special offers, retail discounts and
competitions. More are being added
all the time so check back regularly
to find out what's going on.
Do I need to re-apply for a new card
when my current one runs out?
Yes. Also, if you are in Year 11 and
planning to stay on in education
you will need to send us a new
application form for the ‘green’
3 in 1 card, which gives you half
price bus fares when you start Sixth
Form or College. Your current card
will be valid until 30 September
2008, so you have plenty of time
before it runs out and can still use
it all through the summer!
What happens if I lose my card?
If your card is lost or stolen, a
new card can be re-issued for a
replacement fee of £12. Email
[email protected] or
call 01243 777330 if you need to

so stick your hands in the air
Volunteering is a great way you can
help others and your community.
It’s fun and very rewarding. While
it may only take just a few hours
of your time, it can make a big
difference to those you help.
Whatever your interests there are
dozens of different ways you can
volunteer. For example, you could
help out at your local animal rescue
centre. Or do some clean-up work
at a nearby nature reserve.
Helping others will give you a big
buzz and help you to learn new life
skills. When you leave school your
efforts are likely to impress future
employers and could help you get
a job.
One easy way to volunteer is through
the Duke of Edinburgh’s award
scheme. If you are 14 or older by
agreeing to complete a set amount
of voluntary work you can earn
yourself a prestigious bronze, silver
or gold award. You can choose from
hundreds of voluntary tasks to work
towards your award. To find out
more log on to the award website:
www.theaward.org
If you are 16 plus you could
volunteer to work abroad. You might
find yourself in Africa or Asia helping
to save threatened animals such as
tigers and monkeys. Or you might
get involved with a charity providing
water to villages in countries where
people are very poor.
To find out more log on to
www.vinspired.com
You don’t even have to leave your
house to volunteer. If you are 16 or
more go online at
www.horsesmouth.co.uk, and give
support and advice to others.
You can start volunteering at any
age. A group of youngsters aged
from nine to 11 from Tangmere
Primary School, for example, have
become junior community wardens
helping to make where they live a
cleaner safer place. In fact you’re
never too young - why not volunteer
to help with the washing up, or
weeding the garden?
Go to
www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk
and look under ‘things to do’ for
more ways to volunteer.
