Yellow sweet peppers Sweet and firm Products Yellow sweet peppers Land area 7,4 hectares Certificates GLOBALG.A.P. KWEKERIJ DE HOOGE WOERT Arthur and Johanna Zwinkels run Kwekerij De Hooge Woert. At their cultivation facilities in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands, they cultivate yellow sweet peppers on 7.4 hectares of land. Their mission is to provide the consumer with top-quality yellow sweet peppers. Arthur and Johanna cultivate the Allrounder variety of yellow sweet pepper. This variety is characterised by its excellent flavour and long shelf life. ‘There are many different varieties of sweet peppers. Selecting one is a meticulous process that considers both market demand and consumer requirements.’ The products are packaged at the cultivation facilities according to customer requirements. Their largest markets are the USA and the UK. Kwekerij De Hooge Woert works efficiently with its resources. ‘In the Lansingerland municipality, 77 nurseries have joined our network in a combined greenhouse coverage of about 280 hectares. They use about 40,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. This CO2 is sourced from industries in the port of Rotterdam who have an excess of CO2’ The CO2 is supplied via a network stretching more than 30 kilometres. This connection ensures a significant annual reduction of CO2 emissions and saves the nurseries money while they promote the efficient use of energy. ‘We also make use of waste heat to heat the greenhouses. This makes us increasingly independent of fossil fuels and allows us to grow a healthy and sustainable product.’ Pests are also treated with biological crop protection agents. ‘This means that we treat each pest insect with its specific natural enemy. We use parasitic wasps and ladybirds against lice and predatory mites against red spider mites. This allows for near maximum organic cultivation.’ www.harvesthouse.nl
