The AQUASUD competition and leisure
pool has been built under a public-private
partnership in the “Parc des Sports” in
Differdange (Luxemburg) next to a football stadium with training pitches and a
multi-storey car park. The building is the
last element in the ensemble to be completed and, following the site’s topography, tacked onto the existing outdoor
pool. The design goal was to create a
centre that makes extensive and attractive
swimming, fitness and wellness facilities
available to clubs, schools and unaffiliated
individuals.
Towards the forecourt, the building
presents itself as a rectilinear and articulated edifice which, by means of an arcade,
links the disabled-friendly entrances to the
foyer and the entrances for schools and
clubs. The dark-grey façade of the “black
box” contrasts restfully with the colourful
urban surroundings.
Available to visitors to the pool hall are
the instruction pool with its height-adjustable floor (e.g. for water cycling), the children’s and paddling pool, the competition
pool with its diving tower, the fun slide
with light effects, and the three multipurpose pools, one of them a heated outdoor pool, with massage jets and flow
channels. All this is complemented on the
upper level by the competition and fitness
area, the sports bar and the sauna and
wellness area.

The three rooms of the fitness area on the
first floor cater for fitness courses, cardio
and weight training. Spacious glazing
offers interesting views of the bathing hall
and the surrounding park-like grounds.
In the sauna area, a total of five sauna
cabins and the steam bath are available.
Via separate changing rooms, the visitor
accesses the sauna entrance area, from
which there is also access to the outdoor
terrace with its whirlpool, fire and fun

The building is striking for its distinct,
honest and reduced selection of materials and a restrained, homogeneous
colour scheme. The primary structure of
reinforced concrete (fair face), steel and
light-coloured structural timbers is visible throughout. The façade of the main

Which theme will dominate sports
architecture in the near future?
Designers will be concerned with the sustainability of their designs, the responsible
treatment of resources and even broad-er
multifunctionalism and interactivity. I personally hope that accessibility – Design
for All – will also grow in importance with
these themes. Sport’s primary task is integration through emotion.
Which is your favourite sports facility?
And why?
The Westfalenhalle in Dortmund – as
a young handball player I was one of
the 12,000 spectators there when the
German team beat the USSR in the 1987
final. Fantastic atmosphere!
One of the most beautiful sports and leisure facilities and a timeless monument of
international sports history is the Olympic
Park with its Olympic Stadium in Munich.
It is still a lively place today and still an
impressive structure. The Allianz Arena in
Munich is undoubtedly a worthy successor.
Which is your favourite sport and
favourite club? What does this sport
mean to you as an architect?
I love sport in general and am a passionate follower of the Olympic Games. My
favourite team is the All Blacks – whenever the New Zealanders perform their
rousing haka, you can feel the power of
sport.
Team sports with the dynamic that
evolves through a team’s cohesion and
emotionality are incredible. We as architects work with interdisciplinary, international teams. Just as in competitive sport,
if you want to be successful in architecture, each team member has to be motivated. The mechanisms are the same.

Das Sport- und Freizeitbad „AQUASUD“
entstand im „Parc des Sports“ in Differdange (Luxemburg) neben einem Fußballstadion mit Trainingsplätzen und einem
Parkhaus im Rahmen eines PPP-Verfahrens. Das Gebäude bildet den Abschluss
des Ensembles und wurde, der Topografie des Geländes folgend, an das bestehende Freibad angefügt. Planungsziel
war ein Zentrum, daß Vereinen, Schulen
und nichtorganisierten Sportlern ganzjährig ein umfangreiches und attraktives
Schwimm-, Fitness- und Wellnessprogramm zur Verfügung stellt.
Das Gebäude zeigt sich vom Vorplatz als
geradliniges, strukturiertes Gebäudevolumen, welches durch eine Arkade die
barrierefreien Zugänge zur Eingangshalle
und die Zugänge für Schulen und Vereine
verbindet. Die dunkelgraue Fassade der
„Blackbox“ bildet einen ruhigen Kontrast
zum vielfarbigen urbanen Umfeld.
Den Besuchern stehen in der Schwimmhalle das Lehrschwimmbecken mit Hubboden (z.B. für Watercycling), das Planschbecken, das Sportbecken mit Sprunganlage,
die Erlebnisrutsche mit Lichteffekten und
die drei Multibecken, davon ein beheiztes

Außenbecken mit Massagedüsen und Strömungskanälen, zur Verfügung. Zusätzlich
findet man im Obergeschoss den Fitnessbereich, die Sportbar sowie den Saunaund Wellnessbereich.
In das bestehende Freibad mit seinem
Schwimmer-, Nichtschwimmer und Kinderbecken wurde eine neue Rutschenanlage
integriert und in den neu gestalteten Freianlagen eine Kletterpyramide installiert.
Der Fitnessbereich im ersten Obergeschoss bietet in drei Räumen Fitnesskurse,
Cardio- und Krafttraining. Großflächige
Verglasungen bieten interessante Einblicke in die Badehalle und die Grünanlagen im Umfeld. Im Saunabereich stehen
insgesamt fünf Saunakabinen und das
Dampfbad zur Verfügung. Über separate
Umkleiden gelangt man in den Eingangsbereich der Sauna, von welchem man
auch Zugang auf die Außenterrasse mit
Whirlpool, Feuer- und Erlebnissauna und
zu den Felsenduschen hat.
Die Zugänge zu den einzelnen Schwimmbecken, Nutzungsbereichen und Ebenen
im Gebäude und außerhalb sind barrierefrei. Darüber hinaus wurden barrierefreie
Umkleiden, Duschen und Sanitäranlagen
sowie Kassen- und Kommunikationsbereiche konzipiert und gebaut.
Eine klare, ehrliche und reduzierte Materialauswahl sowie ein zurückhaltendes,
homogenes Farbkonzept prägen das
Gebäude. Die Primärkonstruktion aus
Stahlbeton (Sichtbeton), Stahl und hellen
Konstruktionshölzern wird durchgängig gezeigt. Die Fassade im Bereich des
Haupteingangs und die Arkaden wurden
vom Graffiti-Künstler SUMO! entwickelt.
