schönsten auch zu Fuss auf
einer Wanderung erkundet
werden kann. Natürlich freuen wir uns auch, wenn wir Sie als

finds its way into our neck of the woods
with its frost and fog, we are often drawn
to warmer climates with more sun. Edelweiss guarantees that this awaits you only a few
comfortable hours away by plane. In this edition
of our in-flight magazine, I am delighted at the
opportunity to present to you two destinations
which are considered to be relatively close to
Switzerland and yet open up completely different
worlds – and most importantly have more sun: The
Atlantic island of Madeira and the Turkish Mediterranean city of Antalya are attractive destinations not just in the swimming season, but also in
the autumn. As there is fantastic nature to behold
both in Antalya and on Madeira, which can be most
beautifully explored by foot on a hike. Of course, we are also delighted to greet you as a
guest on our long-distance flight and spoil you
with the little extras which shape the quality of
Edelweiss, including our high-end culinary range
enriched with authentic Swiss products like the
delicious Toggenburg pear tart.

Renzo on board
An Bord der Edelweiss begegnet man vielen hübschen Cabin
Crew Members. Doch staunten die Passagiere nicht schlecht, als
sie in die tiefblauen Augen Renzo Blumenthals schauten. In
Sennenhemd und roter Edelweiss Schürze stand der ehemalige
Mister Schweiz in der Business Class. Der Biobauer strebt aber
keine Karriere als Cabin Crew Member an. Seit drei Monaten wird
an Bord sein Bio-Blumenthaler-Käse serviert. Auf dem Flug nach
Tampa Bay nutzte er die Gelegenheit, seine Köstlichkeit persönlich den Gästen zu präsentieren. «Der Gasteinsatz als Flight
Attendant hat mir grossen Spass gemacht», so Blumenthal, «die
Passagiere und die Crew haben mich herzlich empfangen.» An
der Traumdestination Tampa Bay in Florida konnte Renzo sich auf
dem Motorboot vom Traktorfahren erholen.

On board Edelweiss, you meet many good looking cabin crew
members. But the passengers were astonished when they looked
into the deep-blue eyes of former Mr. Switzerland Renzo
Blumenthal. In an alpine shirt and a red, Edelweiss apron, the
former Mr Switzerland stood in Business Class. But the organic
farmer isn’t looking for a career as a cabin crew member. His
organic Blumenthal cheese has been served on board for the past
three months. On a flight to Tampa Bay, he took the opportunity
to present his delicacy to the guests in person. “I really enjoyed
being a guest flight attendant”, says Blumenthal, “both the
passengers and the crew welcomed me very warmly.” Renzo had
a glorious break away from driving the tractor on his farm and
was able to enjoy the dream destination of Tampa Bay in Florida.

Nirgends hat man so viel Zeit, das Essen zu geniessen, wie auf
einem Flug. Das weiss Edelweiss und gibt sich ganz besonders
Mühe, seine Gäste kulinarisch zu überraschen. Die Menüs der
kommenden Wintersaison sind sorgfältig ausgewählt und setzen
auf schweizerische und regionale Produkte. In der Business Class
gibt es eine Krauseminzewurst und eine Bio-Heusuppe. Ausserdem
werden Zanderfilets vom Bodensee serviert und Kalbsgeschnetzeltes nach Walliser Art. Im Winter ist eines der Hauptgerichte
Metzgete mit Thurgauer Most-Sauerkraut und Petersilienkartoffeln
zu Weihnachten gibt es glasierte Ente mit Marronispätzli. Auf
der Langstrecke wird man in der Business Class sogar mit einem
warmen Dessert verwöhnt: Der Schoggikuchen und der Toggenburger Schlorzifladen werden von der Crew kurz vor dem Service
auf­gewärmt. Auch in der Economy Class sind die Produkte
regionaler Herkunft. Es gibt einen Älpler Makkaroni Salat, ein
kaltes Plättli mit Kartoffelsalat, Salsiz, Mostbröckli und Bündner
Rohschinken. Unter den Dessertvariationen ist auch eine urschweizerische Aargauer Rüeblitorte. Für alle, die verreisen, sind
die exklusiven Menüs ein letzter Bissen Heimatgefühl. Für
diejenigen, die heimkehren, wird die Sehnsucht nach Schweizer
Produkten schon vor der Landung in Zürich gestillt.

Nothing else gives you so much time to enjoy food as being on a
flight. Edelweiss knows this and goes to special lengths to
provide its guests with culinary surprises. The menus for the coming
season have been carefully selected and draw on Swiss and
regional products. In Business Class, there is a Krauseminzewurst
(curled mint sausage) and a Bio-Heusuppe (organic hay soup).
Pike-perch fillets from Lake Constance are also served, along with
Valais veal goujons. In the winter months, one of the main courses
is roasted pork with Thurgau cider sauerkraut and parsley
potatoes; for Christmas there is glazed duck with sweet chestnut
spätzle (Swabian pasta). On long-distance flights, those in
Business Class are even spoiled with a warm dessert: Schoggikuchen
(chocolate cake) and Toggenburger Schlorzifladen (pear tart from
Toggenburg) are warmed up by the crew shortly before service.
Regional products can also be found in Economy Class. There is
an alpine macaroni salad, a cold platter with potato salad, Salsiz
(cured sausage), Mostbröckli (cured beef), Bündner Rohschinken
(cured ham), and an Aargau carrot cake for dessert. For those
who are leaving the country, the exclusive menus give a last sense
of home. For those coming home, the craving for Swiss products
can be satisfied before landing in Zurich.

ntalya an der türkischen Riviera ist in
den letzten Jahren zu einer Grossstadt
mit über zwei Millionen Einwohnern herangewachsen. An der Peripherie wuchern Hochhäuser, umso angenehmer überrascht
die Ruhe und Beschaulichkeit des Zentrums.
Mittelpunkt ist der schmucke kleine Hafen. Hier
scheint die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein. Auf den
Steinen der Mole sitzen verliebte Pärchen, alte

Around the edges skyscrapers proliferate, making the calm and tranquillity of the centre
all the more of a pleasant surprise. The focus thus
centering on the pretty little port. Time seems to
have stood still here. On the stones of the pier sit
various groups of people – couples in love, old
men, smoking and silently watching the boats go
by with dark eyes and a hard to read gaze and
others just escaping the pressures of the day or
wanting the feel of a fresh seabreeze. Fishermen

Männer beobachten schweigend rauchend mit
dunklen Augen und schwer lesbarem Blick das
Treiben auf dem Wasser. Fischer versuchen, sich
frisch aus dem Meer ein günstiges Abendessen
zu fangen. Wie an einer Perlenkette aufgereiht,
wetteifern grössere und kleinere Ausflugsschiffe
um Passagiere. Die einstündige Rundfahrt ist
günstig, Getränke an Bord kosten extra. Dass sich
auch Einheimische eine Fahrt auf einem der Tour­
istenboote gönnen, gibt einem ein beruhigendes
Gefühl. Der «grösste sich ins Meer ergiessende
Wasserfall der Welt» ist dann zwar um einiges
kleiner, als man ihn sich vorstellt. Dafür entschädigt die wunderschöne Aussicht auf die im Dunst
liegenden, schneebedeckten Berggipfel. Hier im
westlichen Teil des 1500 Kilometer langen TaurusGebirges sind die höchsten von ihnen über 3000
Meter hoch.
Hübscher Stadtstrand und Altstadt-Basar
Sonnenhungrige legen sich am hübschen kleinen
Badestrand auf den Holzsteg. Nichts stillt den
Durst besser, als ein kühles Bier der einheimischen
Marke Efes auf der Terrasse des Restaurants Yat
Limani. Hier geniesst man den Sonnenuntergang
oder macht sich auf in die schöne und gut erhaltene Altstadt, die gleichzeitig ein riesiger OpenAir-Basar ist. Hier gibt es gefälschte Markenkleider
zu unübertrefflichen Preisen und aufwändig von
Hand verziertes Porzellangeschirr, opulente farbige Gewürzstände verwirren die Sinne. «Guten Tag,
meine Herren! Kann ich Ihnen helfen?» Praktischerweise sprechen viele der Verkäufer Deutsch.
Antalya liegt in einer sehr fruchtbaren Region, die Stadt soll ihre
Wurzeln im 2. Jahrhundert vor
Christus haben. Bald darauf fiel
sie den Römern in die Hände. Und
diese hinterliessen ihre Spuren.
Wie das Hadrianstor, 130 nach
Christus zu Ehren des Besuchs
von Kaiser Hadrian gebaut. Noch
älter ist die Stadt Side, etwa 80
Autominuten östlich von Antalya.
Vor 3500 Jahren eine bedeutende
Hafenstadt der Antike, sind ihre
Ruinen heute ein Touristenmagnet. Etwas weniger bekannt aber nicht minder
beeindruckend ist das Amphitheater von Aspendos. Gebaut vom römischen Kaiser Marc Aurel,
ist es heute eines der besterhaltenen seiner Art
in ganz Kleinasien. Vor 20 000 begeisterten Zuschauern sangen hier schon die Tenöre Luciano
Pavarotti und José Carreras. Und 2005 wurde hier
eine Open-Air-Sendung von «Wetten, dass?» gedreht. Überhaupt die Deutschsprachigen: Rund
10 000 sollen sich in der Region niedergelassen
haben. Folgt man dem Köprüçay-Fluss mit seinem
sauberen, türkisklaren Bergwasser, erreicht man

seek to catch a cheap evening meal fresh from the
sea. Like a string of pearls, large and small excursion boats view for passengers looking for someone to show them around the nearby coastline.
The one hour round trip is cheap, drinks on board
cost extra. That locals also indulge in a trip on one
of the tourist boats gives it a nice, reassuring feel.
Even though the “largest waterfall in the world to
flow into the sea” is a little smaller than one might
imagine, it’s still worth it, as the wonderful view
of the mist enshrouded, snow-capped peaks more
than makes up for it. Antalya is in the western part
of the 1500 kilometre long Taurus mountains,
where the highest of the peaks reach to more than
3000 metres tall.
Pretty urban beach and old town bazaar
The sun-hungry tourists and locals alike lie on the
board walk at the pretty little bathing beach. Nothing quenches the thirst better than a cool local
Efes beer on the terrace at the Yat Limani restaurant. Here you can enjoy the sunset or strike out
into the beautiful and well-preserved old town
which is also an enormous open-air bazaar. Here,
there are fake branded clothes at unbelievable
prices and lavishly hand-decorated porcelain
dishes, while opulently coloured spice stands divert the senses. “Guten Tag, meine Herren! [Good
afternoon, gentlemen!] Kann ich Ihnen helfen?
[Can I help you?]” On the practical side (for the
Swiss, Austrian and German tourists), many of the
sellers speak German.
Antalya is located in a very fruitful region, the city
has its roots in the 2nd century before Christ. It
soon fell into the hands of the Romans. And they
left behind traces of themselves. Such as Hadrian’s
Gate, built in honour of Emperor Hadrian’s visit in
the year 130 AD. The town of Side, around 80 minutes by car to the east of Antalya, is even older.
3500 years ago it was an important port city for
the ancient world, today its ruins are a tourist magnet. A little less well known but no less impressive
is the Aspendos amphitheatre. Built by the Roman
Emperor Marc Aurel, today it is one of the best
preserved of its kind in the whole of Asia Minor.
The tenors Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras
once sang here in front of an enthusiastic audience
of 20,000. And in 2005 an open-air broadcast of
“Wetten, dass?”, a well known former German
game show, was recorded here. Talking of German-speakers: around 10,000 are said to have
settled in the area. If you follow the Köprüçay
river with its clean, clear turquoise mountain water, you will soon reach the Köprülü canyon where
several companies offer you river rafting, canyoning and even zip-lining at attractive prices. You
can escape here to the foot of the mountains if
it gets too hot on the coast. The landscape with
dense forests and rugged canyons reminds you of

nach kurzer Zeit den Köprülü Canyon, wo man für
wenig Geld Riverraften kann. Hierhin, an den Fuss
des Gebirges, weicht man aus, wenn es an der
Küste zu heiss wird. Die Landschaft mit dichten
Wäldern und zerklüfteten Canyons erinnert an die
Weiten Nordamerikas. Lohnenswert: Ein Ausflug
zum Amphitheater im etwas abgelegenen Dorf
Karabük. Hier oben findet man sie noch, die oft
beschriebene Gastfreundschaft Kleinasiens. Beim
lokalen Bauern wird man authentisch-ländlicheinfach mit selbstgebackenem «Ekmek» – Brot –
mit Schafskäse und Oliven verköstigt. Unaufdringlich bietet der Vater seine selbstgeschnitzten
Küchenutensilien an. Das Strahlen der beiden
schwarzhaarigen Töchterchen bringt die Herzen
des Besuchs im Nu zum Schmelzen. Zum Schluss
werden die Gäste sogar noch beschenkt: Einen
Sack mit getrocknetem Salbei dürfen sie nach
Hause nehmen.

the often reported hospitality of Asia Minor. It is
even possible to share a meal with one of the local
farmers, where you are fed with authentic rural
simplicity on home-baked “Ekmek” – bread – with
sheep’s cheese and olives. The father of the fami­
ly unassumingly offers you his hand-carved kitchen utensils. The radiant smiles of the two darkhaired little daughters melts the visitor’s heart in
an instant. Finally the guests, with stomachs and
hearts full, are even given gifts: you can take an
entire sack of dried sage with you to Switzerland
or wherever else in the world you call home.

erträumt und umgeben von üppig gewachsenem Palmenwald thront es stolz
über dem schneeweissen Strand von
St. Petersburg. Das Gebäude mit seinen
zwei weiten Seitenflügeln scheint bequem in sich
selbst zu ruhen. Und mit seinen verspielten Türmchen und Fensterchen erinnert es von weitem
irgendwie an eine überdimensionale Sandburg.
Das Don CeSar Hotel ist tatsächlich eine Märchenburg. Es ist wohl eines der schönsten und traditionsreichsten Luxushotels Floridas mit einer einzigartigen Lage direkt am Golf von Mexiko und
einer bewegten Geschichte.
Bis zum 8. Juni 1888 ist der Westzipfel Floridas
kaum erschlossenes Sumpf- und Weideland mit
ein paar losen Siedlungen. An diesem historischen
Datum trifft der erste Zug der Orange Belt Railway

growth of a palm forest, it sits enthroned
with pride over the snow-white beach of
St. Petersburg. The building, with its two
wide side wings, appears to lie comfortably in itself. And with its dainty turrets and small windows,
it is somehow reminiscent of an oversized sandcastle when seen from afar. The Don CeSar Hotel
is actually a fairytale castle. It is arguably one of
the most beautiful and traditional luxury hotels in
Florida with a unique position directly on the Gulf
of Mexico and an eventful history.
Until the 8th of June 1888, the western tip of
Florida is nothing more than scarcely developed
swamp and grassland with a few odd settlements.
But on this historical date, the first Orange Belt
train reaches its final stop in Tampa Bay. This was
made possible by Russian investor Peter Demens,
who, out of sheer joy at what he’s achieved, names
the new area after his city of birth, St. Petersburg.

einer Invasion. Sie kommen mit dem Auto, per
Bahn oder mit Jachten. Der Bauboom bringt auch
eine bemerkenswerte Architektur in die Stadt:
Mediterrane Motive kommen auf, die heute noch
an verschiedenen Gebäuden bewundert werden
können: Zum Beispiel am Vinoy Hotel, am Jungle
Country Club Hotel, der Princess-Martha- und der
Snell-Arcade und auch an dem spanischen Stil
nachempfundenen Schlössern und Häusern entlang der Coffee Pot Bayou.

Hotel weit draussen auf dem Strand. Der irische

In time, more and more people discover the beautiful region with its snow-white beaches stretching
for kilometres. At the start of the 1920s, the
economy booms, and the first mass tourism in
America comes too, making St. Petersburg its own
dream destination. The influx of summer visitors
is like a small invasion. They come by cars, by train
or with yachts. The construction boom also brings
striking architecture to the city: Mediterranean
motifs are revived and can still be admired today
on various buildings: For example, on the Vinoy

– und dafür muss eigens eine Strasse angelegt
werden. In der damaligen Zeit zeigt allein schon
diese Tatsache, welche exklusive Klientel mit dem
Prachtbau in Pink angesprochen werden soll: die
High Society.
Diese kommt. US-Präsident Franklin D. Roosevelt,
Baseball-Legende Lou Gehrig und sogar Al Capone tragen sich ins Gästebuch ein. Das Don CeSar
wird zum Tummelplatz für Millionäre – bis Rowe
1940 plötzlich stirbt und seine Frau den Betrieb
übernimmt. Sie ist überfordert, und so kommt es,
dass 1942 die US-Army das Anwesen kauft, um
darin ein Hospital für verletzte Zweit-WeltkriegsPiloten einzurichten. Bis in die Sechzigerjahre
nutzt die Army das Gebäude für die Administration der Veteranenverbände. Dann ist es so baufällig, dass ein Abriss bevorsteht. Doch William
Bowman Jr, einer der Piloten-Veteranen, der einst
dort gekurt hat und nach dem Krieg erfolgreicher
Unternehmer wurde, rettet den rosa Palast vor
dem Untergang. 1973 zahlt er 460 000 Dollar für
Hotel, the Jungle Country Club Hotel, the Princess
Martha and the Snell Arcade, and also on the castles and houses along the Coffee Pot Bayou, which
are mostly modelled on the Spanish style.
But one building outshines them all with its sheer
singularness: The Don CeSar Hotel far out there
on the beach. The Irish millionaire and hotel investor Thomas Rowe built it with one clear strategy:
This wonderful place can only be reached by car
– and a road must be built specifically for this.
Back then, this fact alone shows which exclusive
clientèle this magnificent pink building is meant
for: the high society.
And they come. US President Franklin D. Roosevelt,
baseball legend Lou Gehrig and even Al Capone
have signed into the guest book. The Don CeSar
easily becomes a hotbed for millionaires and
celebrities – until Rowe suddenly dies in 1940 and
his wife takes over the business. The task is so
overwhelming that she is unable to cope and so
it transpires that the US Army buys the estate in
1942 in order to set up a hospital inside it for returning, wounded pilots of the Second World War.

durch die Rechnung. Er schafft es nicht, das grosse Luxushotel in die schwarzen Zahlen zu wirtschaften und muss es verkaufen. Im Aufschwung
der 1980er blüht das Don CeSar jedoch zu voller
Grösse auf: An der Bar trifft man Robert De Niro
und James Woods, die auf dem Strand den KinoKlassiker «Once Upon A Time In America» drehen.
Die «Pink Lady» wird als Filmkulisse berühmt. Zum
80. Geburtstag erhält sie zudem eine der schönsten und modernsten Spa-Anlagen Floridas. Ein
Jahr später kauft die traditionsreiche amerikanische Luxus­hotel-Gruppe Loews das Don CeSar
und investiert nochmals in eine Runderneuerung.

After the war, the army uses the building for the
administration of veterans’ societies well into the
sixties. By this time the Don CeSar, a once magnificent hotel, is so dilapidated that it is about to
be demolished. But William Bowman, Jr., one of
the veteran pilots who recovered there once and
became a successful businessman after the war,
saves the pink palace from ruin. In 1973, he pays
460,000 dollars for a shell of a ruin, which he then
helps restore to its old glamorous self with a passion for detail and a lot of his own handiwork. In
1974, the Don CeSar is added to the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, the recession also foils his plans. He can’t seem to operate
the big luxury hotel in black figures and has to sell
it. But in the upturn of the 1980s, the Don CeSar
is in full bloom: At the bar, you can meet actors
Robert De Niro and James Woods, who are filming
the film classic “Once Upon A Time In America”
on the beach outside. The “Pink Lady” becomes
a famous film set. On its 80th birthday, it also gets
one of the most beautiful and state-of-the-art spa
facilities in Florida. One year later, the traditional
American luxury hotel group Loews buys the Don
CeSar and invests in another renovation. Leaving
it a dream resort beautifully restored in style.

Wie golft es sich in der Türkei?
Gut! Hier an der türkischen Riviera herrschen sogar
im Winter angenehme Golftemperaturen. Zu heiss
habe ich sowieso nie, weniger gern habe ich wenns
kalt ist.
Golf hat den Ruf, ein elitärer Sport zu sein.
Stimmt das?
Früher war das sicher der Fall. Aber mit den Migros
Golfplätzen wurde das Golfen in den letzten Jahren

Wollen Sie der Roger Federer des Golfsports
werden?
Ich sehe mich nicht als das gleiche Ausnahmetalent wie er. Aber wenn ich etwas dafür machen
kann, das Bild des Golfsports in der Schweiz zu
verbessern, wäre das schön.
Ist Golf ein «richtiger» Sport?
Immerhin ist Golf an den Olympischen Spielen
2016 in Rio de Janeiro nach 112 Jahren erstmals
wieder olympisch. Das trägt sicher zur Anerkennung als «richtiger» Sport bei.
Wie fit muss ein Golfer tatsächlich sein?
Wenn man physisch nicht fit ist, kann man die nötige mentale Stärke nicht aufrechterhalten. Dafür
trainiere ich täglich im Kraftraum. Um erfolgreich
zu sein, braucht es verschiedene Komponenten:
Technik, mentale und physische Stärke, Kraft, Ausdauer, Beweglichkeit Flexibilität, Rumpfstabilität
und Schnellkraft.
Welche weiteren Sportarten betreiben Sie?
Im Sommer bike ich, im Winter fahre ich sehr
gerne Ski.
Wie kamen Sie zum Golfen?
Als ich zehn Jahre alt war, wollte unser Vater, dass
wir mit ihm spielten. Also fingen meine Mutter,
mein Bruder und ich gemeinsam im Migros Golfpark Holzhäusern bei Zug an. Am Anfang traf ich
keinen Ball. Den Ansporn, nicht gleich aufzugeben,
gab mir mein Bruder. Drei Jahre älter als ich, war
er immer in allem besser als ich: Ob im Skifahren,
Tennis oder in der Schule. Natürlich schaffte er die
Prüfung zur Platzreife bereits nach drei Monaten.
Bei mir klappte es erst nach zwei Jahren und beim
vierten Anlauf!
Was für ein harziger Start!
Ja, sehr harzig sogar! Meine Eltern rieten mir sogar,
mit Golfen aufzuhören, wenn es mir keinen Spass
mache. Ich wollte aber unbedingt meinen Bruder
schlagen. Dank viel Training wurde ich dann irgendwann besser und es begann mir sogar Spass zu
machen.
Wann wussten Sie, dass es zum Profi reicht?
Mit 15 Jahren wusste ich, dass ich Profi werden
will. Ich wechselte ans Sportgymnasium nach
Davos, spielte in der Nationalmannschaft und an
Europa- und Weltmeisterschaften.
Recht ambitioniert für eine 15-Jährige!
Wenn ich ein Ziel habe, arbeite ich diszipliniert
darauf hin. Nach der Matura ging ich zuerst mit
einem Golfstipendium in die USA. Das gefiel mir
aber gar nicht. In den USA ist Golf ein Teamsport.
Ich merkte rasch, dass ich lieber meine eigenen
Ziele verfolge.

In the past that was certainly the case. But with
the Migros golf courses, golfing has become affordable for everyone in recent years. You can get
involved for a membership fee of just 250 Francs
per year. If you compare it with skiing, that’s more
expensive for the average family in Switzerland
now. Tennis was also seen as a sport for the elite
for a long time, Roger Federer changed all that.
Do you want to be the Roger Federer of golf?
I don’t see myself as an exceptional talent like him.
But if I can help to improve the image of golf in
Switzerland that would be great.
Is golf a “real” sport?
Golf is finally becoming an Olympic sport at the
2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after 112
years. That will surely contribute to its recognition
as a “real” sport.
How fit does a golfer actually have to be?
If you’re not physically fit then you can’t maintain
the necessary mental strength. That’s why I train
daily in the weights room. In order to be successful, it takes a variety of elements: technique,
mental and physical strength; power, endurance,
mobility, flexibility, core stability and explosive
strength.
What other types of sport do you do?
Well, in the summer I bike, and in winter I really
like to ski.
How did you get into golf?
When I was ten years old, our dad wanted us to
play with him, so my mum, my brother and I went
to the Migros Holzhäusern golf course in Zug together. To begin with I couldn’t hit the ball at all.
My brother gave me the incentive not to just give
up. Three years older than me, he was always better than me at everything: whether it was skiing,
tennis or in school. Of course he’d already got his
license to play after three months. For me it took
two years and four attempts!
What a slow start!
Yes, very slow! My parents even told me to stop
playing golf if I wasn’t enjoying it. But I really

steht in der Europarangliste auf
Platz 50. Zum Golfsport kam
sie als Zehnjährige durch ihren
Vater Bruno, damals Präsident im
Golfclub Ennetsee bei Zug.
Fabienne besuchte das Sportgymnasium in Davos und hat einen
Bachelor in Sportmanagement.

wanted to beat my brother. Thanks to a lot of
training I eventually got better and I even started
to enjoy it.
When did you know you were good enough to
be a pro?
At the age of 15 I knew that I wanted to become
a golf professional. So, I moved to the Sports Academy in Davos and played on the national team and
in the European and World Championships.
Really ambitious for a 15 year old!
When I have a goal, I work with discipline to
achieve it. After my Matura [school leaving examination], I initially moved to the USA on a golf
scholarship to Purdue University. But I didn’t like
it. It was a struggle for me, because at that level
in the USA, golf is a team sport. I quickly realised
that I prefer to pursue my own goals.
Do you consider this ambition one of your
strengths?
I certainly think it is. My trainers are more likely to
need to hold me back than to have to motivate
me to train.
Have you never had to accept setbacks?
Plenty of times. Twice I’ve had to take a forced
break because of a slipped disc. But I never gave
up and I’ve now been making a living from golf
for three years.
How many people are on your staff?
There are eight in total: a mentor, a technique
coach, a putting coach, a mental coach, a fitness

Ist dieser Ehrgeiz eine Ihrer Stärken?
Das ist sicher so. Meine Trainer müssen mich eher
bremsen, als zum Training motivieren.
Mussten Sie nie Rückschläge einstecken?
Sehr viele sogar. Zwei Mal musste ich wegen eines
Bandscheibenvorfalls zwangspausieren. Ich gab
aber nie auf und lebe nun seit drei Jahren vom
Golfen.
Wie viele Personen gehören zu Ihrem Staff?
Insgesamt acht: Mentor, Techniktrainer, Putttrainer,
Mentaltrainer, Konditionstrainer, Osteopath, Masseuse und – der wichtigste – mein Caddie.
Ein Caddie ist ja bekanntlich mehr als ein
Golfsackträger für den Profigolfer, sondern dessen
wichtigste Ansprechperson. Was ist neben
einem guten Caddie beim Golfen das Geheimnis?
Wichtig ist Schlag für Schlag zu spielen und nicht
an das Gesamtscore zu denken. Das macht Golfen
zu einer Art Lebensschule. Sich auf den Moment
konzentrieren.
Wo können Sie auftanken?
Irgendwo in den Schweizer Bergen. Sie sind mein
Kraftort. Dorthin ziehe ich mich auch gerne zwischen zwei Turnieren zurück. Ich bleibe auch gerne während meiner Ferien in der Schweiz, ich bin
ja sonst genug unterwegs. Pro Jahr spiele ich
circa 25 Turniere. Da ist die Regeneration genauso
wichtig wie das Training. Bewusst Ruhephasen
einzuplanen, das muss ich noch ein bisschen besser lernen.
Wie wählen Sie Ihre Turniere aus?
Momentan spiele ich jedes Turnier, das ich kann.
Natürlich gibt es ein paar besonders prestigeträchtige. Dubai jeweils im Dezember ist ein
Megaturnier. Im Moment laufen Planungen, auch
in der Schweiz wieder ein grosses Turnier auf die
Beine zu stellen.
Gibt es Freundschaften mit Spielerinnen?
Ich verstehe mich mit den meisten Spielerinnen
gut. Am Ende sind wir aber immer Konkurrentinnen. Bei 126 Frauen an einem Turnier kann es auch
mal Reibereien geben. Das Tourleben ist manchmal etwas einsam. Freude oder Frust teilen kann
man mit einer Konkurrentin nicht so gut. Dafür ist
ein guter Caddie wichtig. Ich bin aber auch nicht
unbedingt auf der Suche nach Freunden auf der
Tour. Meine guten Freunde sind zuhause in der
Schweiz.
Bis wann wollen Sie golfen?
Das beste Alter für Golfer ist so um 32 oder 33.
Die Erfahrung ist da und auch physisch ist man
noch sehr gut dabei. Für mich gibt es aber auch
ein Leben nach dem Sport. Ich habe einen Bachelor in Sportmanagement. Athletenmanagement
würde mich interessieren.
Ihre Ziele in diesem Jahr?
Die Qualifikation für die Olympischen Spiele 2016
in Rio de Janeiro. Und meine letztjährige Position
von Rang 50 in der Europarangliste verbessern.

It is well known that a caddy is more than just
someone to carry the golf bag for a pro golfer,
they are the pro’s most important contact
person. Alongside a good caddy, what is the
secret to golf?
It’s really important to play stroke by stroke and
not think about the overall score. I think that makes
golf a kind of school for life. Knowing the importance of concentrating on the moment.
Where can you recharge?
Anywhere in the Swiss mountains. They are my
place of power. I like to retreat there between two
tournaments. I also like to stay in Switzerland during my holidays, because I already travel enough.
I play in around 25 tournaments every year. As a
result, recuperation is as important as training. I
still need to learn better how to consciously plan
rest periods.
How do you choose your tournaments?
At the moment I play in every tournament I can.
Of course some are particularly prestigious.

There’s always a mega-tournament in Dubai in
December that I like to play in. And planning is
under way at the moment for putting on a large
tournament in Switzerland.
Are their friendships with other players?
I get on well with most of the players. But at the
end of the day they’re always my competitors.
With 126 women in a tournament there can also
be rivalries. Life on tour can sometimes be a bit
lonely. Sharing joy or frustration with a competitor
isn’t that easy. A good caddy is important for that.
But I’m also not really looking for friends on the
tour. My good friends are at home in Switzerland.
How long do you want to play golf for?
The best age for golfers is about 32 or 33. The
experience is there and you’re still in good physical shape. For me, though, there’s a life after sport
too. I have a Bachelor’s in sports management. I
would be interested in athlete management.
Your goals for this year?
Qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de
Janeiro. And improving my position from last year
of ranking 50th on the European rankings list.

Roulette besteht aus dem Spielfeld
– dem Tableau – und dem Kessel.
Eine weisse Kugel wird in den
Kessel geworfen, während sich
dieser dreht. Sobald die Kugel an
Geschwindigkeit verliert, fällt
sie in eines der Nummernfächer.
Die Roulette-Fächer sind mit den
Zahlen 1 bis 36 nummeriert. Diese
sind abwechselnd rot und schwarz
gefärbt. Dazu gibt es zwei grüne
Fächer mit den Zahlen 0 und 00
(im Gegensatz zum europäischen
Roulette, das nur eine grünes
Fach mit der 0 hat). Ziel des Las Vegas
Casino Roulette-Spiels ist es, zu
erraten, in welchem Nummernfeld
die Kugel landen wird. Die Spieler

The roulette pockets are numbered
from 1 to 36. These are coloured
alternately in red and black. There
are also two green pockets
numbered 0 and 00 (in contrast to
European roulette, which only
has one green pocket marked 0).
The aim of Las Vegas casino
roulette is to guess which number
pocket the ball will land in. Players
place their bets on the layout and

a rauscht das Wasser plötzlich in schnellem Tempo abwärts. Ist es doch bisher
immer so ruhig neben einem hergeflossen. Die auffällige, imposante Stelle mit
den rund 50 in die Erde gemeisselten Treppenstufen befindet sich eine halbe Stunde Fussweg
vom Parkplatz Rabaçal entfernt. Dieser ist Ausgangspunkt verschiedener Wandermöglichkeiten
im grössten madeirischen Naturschutzgebiet. Es
wurde 1999 zum UNESCO-Welterbe erklärt, insbesondere wegen des zauberhaften Lorbeerwaldes, dem Laurisilva, wie es ihn beispielsweise auch
auf den Kanaren, in Neuseeland oder Brasilien gibt.
Der feuchte Wald ist dicht und immergrün, darin
zu stehen einfach märchenhaft. Ein Glück, dass
man ihn hautnah erleben kann. Natürliche Wanderwege sind dank den historischen Wasserkanälen gegeben, denn diese mussten schon immer
zugänglich sein, zur Erbauung wie auch zur Wartung. Entsprechend schmal sind die Pfade, sodass
man hintereinander geht und sich mittendrin fühlt
in dieser wilden Natur, dem feuchten Grün, der
rotbraunen Erde, den kantigen Felsen, immer begleitet vom leisen Wasserlauf.
Der Weg führt in den Süden
Weitgehend fliesst das kanalisierte Wasser in einem kaum merklichen Gefälle ruhig, aber zügig
dahin. Denn die Wasserläufe, auf Portugiesisch
Levadas genannt, müssen weite Wege vom feuchten Norden in den trockenen Süden zurücklegen.
Das nördliche Klima der Insel wäre ideal für Landwirtschaft, ist aber auch für den verwegensten
Terrassenbau zu schroff. Der südliche Teil, der
flacher und darum gut bebaubar ist, leidet aber
unter einer Trockenzeit von April bis Oktober und
ist darum auf künstliche Bewässerung angewiesen. Dies haben bereits die ersten Siedler im 15.
Jahrhundert bemerkt und begonnen, Kanäle anzulegen. 1493 erliess König Johann II. von Portugal
ein Gesetz, das den Landeigentümern auferlegte,

here, the water suddenly murmurs quickly downwards. Until now, it has flowed
along so calmly. The striking, imposing site
with around 50 steps sculpted from the
earth is located half an hour away from the Rabacal car park on foot. This is the starting point for
a variety of hiking trails in Madeira’s largest nature
reserve. It was declared an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, in particular because of the enchanting laurel forest, the laurisilva, such as can
also be found in the Canary Islands, in New Zealand or in Brazil. The humid forest is dense and
evergreen, standing in it is simply magical. What
luck that you can experience it up close; natural
hiking trails are available thanks to the historic
water channels since these always had to be accessible, for construction as well as for maintenance. The paths are correspondingly narrow so
you have to walk one behind the other and you
feel right in the middle of this wild landscape, the
moist greenery, the red-brown earth, the jagged
rocks, always accompanied by the gentle watercourse. The trail leads to the south
The channelled water largely flows at a barely
noticeable gradient, quickly but calmly. Since the
watercourses, called “levadas” in Portuguese,
must cross the long distance from the wet north
to the dry south. The climate in the north of the
island was ideal for agriculture, but it is too steep.
The southern part, which is flatter and thus easy
to build on, suffers however from a dry season
from April to October and is thus dependent on
artificial watering. The first settlers in the 15th century noticed this and began to create channels. In

sugar cane cultivation in the 17th century. Regardless of the dizzying heights, they pass through the

from the water, cooling your feet in a beautiful

senkrecht hinabstürzen kann. Wie ein Teppich bedecken weiches Moos und feuchtes Farn diese
Steilwände. Eindrücklich und paradiesisch – man
könnte sich fast verlieren. Aber da ist wieder der
klare Strom des Wassers, der zuverlässig die Richtung weist und bei der Orientierung hilft. Eine
Levadawanderung ist ein gut geführtes Abenteuer.
Das Wanderwegnetz auf Madeira ist deutlich ausgeschildert mit PR1 bis PR20. Am Start der Wanderung steht eine Tafel mit der Übersicht des
Weges. Die Strecken werden regelmässig kontrolliert, ausgebessert und wo nötig gesichert. Man
kann das Erlebnis gut auf eigene Faust und auch
mit trittsicheren Kindern wagen. Wichtig ist allerdings, nebst rutschfestem Schuhwerk auch pro
Person eine Stirnlampe dabeizuhaben, denn die
Levadas führen teilweise durch Tunnels, die nicht
beleuchtet sind. Im Bauch des Berges nur vom
Lichtkegel der Stirnlampe und dem leisen Wasser­
fluss geführt, unterbrechen nur die knirschenden
Schritte die Stille. Das ist besser als Geisterbahn.
Unweigerlich atmet man innerlich auf, wenn in der
Ferne ein Lichtpunkt auftaucht, der immer grösser
wird. Gerne steht man bald darauf wieder im herrlich grünen, wilden Wald und atmet sie ein, diese
feuchte, frische, belebende Luft.
Ein Bad im Märchenwald
Bis heute erfüllen die Levadas ihren Bewässerungszweck. An ihren Endpunkten befinden sich
Speicherbecken, wo sich auch Fische tummeln.
Unter drei Levadas sind zudem Kraftwerke angelegt, damit das Wasser zuerst Strom erzeugen
kann, bevor es dann die trockenen Erden befeuchtet. Die jüngste, die Levada dos Tornos, ist 1966 in
Betrieb genommen worden. Sie misst 106 Kilometer und bewässert 9900 Hektaren Land. Gelegentlich dienen die Levadas auch als Transportweg,
zum Beispiel für Holz. Sie sind aber ausnahmslos
sauber und laden auch zum Ganzkörperbad. Einsame Stellen gibts
dafür genug, da das weit verzweigte Wegnetz die Wandernden verteilt. Wer noch mehr Einsamkeit sucht, zieht am besten
bei nebligem Wetter los. Der Märchenwald hinter Schleiern wirkt
fast gespenstisch, im wahrsten
Sinne unheimlich schön. Und egal
ob mit oder gegen den Strom
berauschend und immer wieder
überraschend: Plötzlich mündet
die Levada bei einem zerfallenen
Viadukt in einen natürlichen Flusslauf, wird von
Blumenpracht gesäumt oder rauscht abwärts, wie
bei dieser in den Fels gemeisselten Treppe.

come plunging down again. Soft moss and damp
ferns cover their steep faces like a blanket. Impressive and heavenly – you can almost lose yourself.
But the clear flow of the water is there again to
reliably point the direction and help with orientation. A levada hike is a well managed adventure.
The network of hiking trains on Madeira is clearly
signposted with PR1 to PR20. At the start of the
hike there is a board with an overview of the route.
The routes are regularly inspected, repaired and
secured where necessary. You can enjoy the adventure on your own and even with sure-footed
children. However, it is important, along with nonslip footwear, for each person to have a head
torch with them since the levadas sometimes lead

The levadas still fulfil their irrigation purpose today. At their end there are reservoirs where even
fish splash about. Below three levadas power
plants have also been put in so that the water can
first generate power before it then moistens the
dry earth. The most recent, the Levada dos Tornos,
measures 106 kilometres and waters 9900 hectares of land. The levadas occasionally serve as a
means of transportation, for wood for example.
And they are, without exception, clean and invite
you to take a full body bath. Anyone searching for
even more seclusion would do best setting out in
misty weather. The fairytale forest in the haze is
almost ghostly, eerily beautiful in the truest sense.

Seit Anfang Juni 2014 sind die beiden Edelweiss Langstreckenmaschinen A330-200 und A330-300 mit umgebauten
Kabinen unterwegs. Die neue Business Class von Edelweiss
verfügt nun über Fully Lie-Flat-Sitze, die sich in zwei Meter
lange Betten verwandeln lassen. Optimaler Komfort, exzellenter
Service und das neue Unterhaltungssystem mit den grossen
16" HD Touchscreens garantieren einen unvergesslichen Flug.
Dank der neu eingeführten Economy Max kommen die Fluggäste nun in den Genuss von mehr Platz und weiteren Annehmlichkeiten. Auch die Economy Class wurde mit neuen Sitzen
und einem neuen Unterhaltungssystem mit Touchscreens
aufgerüstet.
The focus of Edelweiss is on innovation and state-of-the-art
technology. Since June 2014, the refurbished cabins of
the A330-300 and A330-200 aircraft offer a more comfortable
interior on Edelweiss long-haul flights. The new Edelweiss
Business Class features fully lie-flat seats that can be converted
into two-metre long beds. Optimal comfort, excellent service
and a new in-flight entertainment system with large 16-inch HD
touch screens ensure a superior travel experience. In the new
Economy Max, Edelweiss passengers can enjoy more space and
several other amenities. What is more, new seats and a new
in-flight entertainment system, including touch screens, ensure

3. Tag: Marrakesch – Essaouira –
Casablanca Nach dem Frühstück fahren Sie
nach Essaouira, das ehemalige Mogador und
Musterbeispiel für arabische Städte. Weiterfahrt und Ankunft in Casablanca.

4. Tag: Casablanca – Rabat – Meknes
Am Morgen Rundfahrt durch Casablanca.
Hier besichtigen Sie u.a. Sehenswürdigkeiten wie den Platz Mohamed V oder die riesige Moschee Hassan II. Anschliessend geht
es weiter nach Rabat. Die prächtige Königsstadt beherbergt viele imposante Bauten wie
den Königspalast, den Hassan Turm oder die
Oudaya Kasbah. Weiterfahrt nach Meknes.
5. Tag: Meknes – Volubilis – Moulay Idriss
– Fès
Geniessen Sie den Ausflug durch die Stadt
des Herrschers Moulay Ismaïl. Sie sehen das
berühmte Tor Bab Mansour und das Mausoleum. Weiter geht es in Richtung Fès. Unterwegs besuchen Sie die heilige Stadt Moulay
Idriss, Grabstätte des Gründers der ersten
marokkanischen Dynastie sowie Volubilis,
die wichtigste römische Ausgrabungsstätte
des Landes.
6. Tag: Fès
Den heutigen Tag verbringen Sie in der
«Stadt der Kunst und Religion». Die Rundfahrt führt Sie u.a. zur Medersa Attarine, zur
Koranuniversität Karouine und zu den berühmten Souks mit ihren unzählig vielen,
schmalen Gassen. Am Nachmittag sehen Sie
ausserdem die Stadtmauer und den Königspalast von Fès.
7. Tag: Fès – Midelt – Erfoud
Sie nehmen Abschied von der ältesten Königsstadt und fahren über das mittlere Atlasgebirge sowie durch das landschaftlich reiz-
volle Ziz-Tal bis nach Erfoud. Die Stadt liegt
inmitten der Palmenhaine des Tafilalets.
8. Tag: Erfoud – Tinghir – Ouarzazate
Frühmorgens haben Sie die Gelegenheit eine
Jeepfahrt zu den Sanddünen von Merzouga
zu machen, um den Sonnenaufgang über der
Wüste zu beobachten. Über Tinghir, welches
im Zentrum einer wunderschönen Oase liegt,
fahren Sie nach Ouarzazate.
9. Tag: Ouarzazate – Zagora – Ouarzazate
Heute fahren Sie durch das Draa-Tal zur Oase
von Tamegroute, einem alten Pilgerort in Zagora. Die abwechslungsreiche Landschaft
von über einer Million Dattelpalmen, vielen
Obst-, Mandel- und Olivenbäumen wird Sie
begeistern.
10. Tag: Ouarzazate – Marrakesch
Besichtigung der Kasbah Tifoultoute und der
Kasbah Aït-Ben-Haddou, die schon für zahlreiche Filme wie «Sodom und Gomorrha»,
«Lawrence von Arabien» und «Die Mumie» als
Kulisse verwendet wurden. Weiterfahrt nach
Marrakesch.
11.–12. Tag: Marrakesch – Zürich
Gestalten Sie Ihre freie Zeit in Marrakesch
nach Belieben. Am 12. Tag Transfer zum Flughafen und Direktflug mit Edelweiss Air nach

Winterwunderland so nah
In ferne Länder zu fliegen und fremde Kulturen zu bereisen hat seinen Reiz. Doch manchmal liegt
das Gute auch ganz nah. Zum Beispiel im Wintersportparadies Flumserberg.
Ein perfekter Wintertag – Schnee, Sonne und Zeit, ihn zu geniessen – sind nirgends so einfach zu haben
wie am Flumserberg. Mit den direkten Zugverbindungen am Wochenende vom Flughafen Zürich aus steht
man in weniger als 60 Minuten inmitten der bezaubernden Schneelandschaft. Ferienfeeling stellt sich in
