Annual Report

Mission
Easter Seals New York provides exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or
special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their
communities.
Dear Friends,
In a year when Universal Pre-K was trending, with the Mayor’s office leading the way, Easter Seals
New York continued to provide leadership and passionate commitment to the educational needs of
children, everywhere. Our Child Development Centers set the standard for preschool education, with
programs operating at capacity, often with waiting lists.
In the United States, Easter Seals is the leading non-profit provider of direct services for individuals
with autism and other special needs. The organization has a long history of support for returning
military service members. In New York, where the need is especially acute, we provide transitional
support and career counseling to our veterans. We are especially proud of our programs for female
veterans, a growing segment of the military with different, more difficult, challenges.
Our work would not be possible without the dedication our staff brings to our mission. Your support
brings opportunities to more than 24,000 children and adults across New York State.
Thanks to all of you, we will continue to provide exceptional services so that all people with special
needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play. Your donations are at
work every day—changing lives and offering hope to those who need it most.
Sincerely,
Joseph A. DiChiara

Helping Bronx Families
Bronx Child Development Center
Easter Seals New York’s Bronx Child Development Center provides pre-school education to
more than 120 young children with disabilities every year. At the Bronx Child Development
Center, children ages 3-5 receive Individualized Education Programs and customized speech,
physical, occupational, and play therapies to ensure their continued development. Students
with physical or intellectual disabilities receive the highest-quality education and support from
experienced, caring teachers and staff. The goal of the Bronx Child Development Center is to
prepare each child to enter the next grade level and eliminate the need for future services.
Family Outreach Program
Easter Seals New York is committed to providing comprehensive services for its students and
families. This includes maximizing community resources and providing referral services to
families in need. Easter Seals New York’s Family Outreach Program helps families in the Bronx
sustain healthy and supportive home environments, strengthen child health and attendance,
and increase access to vital resources that improve the lives and education of children. The
program delivers comprehensive social work and nursing services to support early childhood
education for children with disabilities. We are extremely grateful to S. Katzman Produce for
their generous support of the Bronx CDC and Outreach Programs.
Capital Opportunity in Valhalla
Easter Seals New York’s Project Explore was developed in conjunction with the Valhalla School
District to respond to the needs of Westchester County for quality after school, child care and pre
kindergarten programs. The Columbus Avenue school building also provides office facilities for
Easter Seals New York administrative staff.
Project Explore focuses on cognitive, social and language development through integrated preschool and inclusive child day care programs for children from 18 months to 5 years old. The
program offers special education services, including speech, occupational, and physical therapy,
and counseling to preschoolers with disabilities, while simultaneously providing a rich, stimulating
curriculum for general education students.
In 2014, the organizations agreed to deepen their relationship. Valhalla has sold the Columbus
Avenue facility to Easter Seals New York, creating a permanent presence in Valhalla’s community.
The Valhalla community so values our participation that the town accepted Easter Seals New
York’s bid for the property over larger offers from commercial developers.
To support the purchase and maintenance of this newly acquired asset, Easter Seals NY is committed to a special capital campaign for the 2014/15 fiscal year. The 2.5 million dollar fund will
provide a reserve for refurbishment, maintenance and repair of the facility. We look forward to
your support for this important project.

Reaching More Veterans
Since World War II, Easter Seals has been a national leader in reaching Veterans in need of community
support and individual counseling. Our service members deserve all that we can do to honor their
service, and ease their transition into civilian life.
In 2014 Easter Seals New York expanded our veterans life transition programs, thereby reaching more
returning service members in Syracuse and New York City. The programs are primarily funded by
grants from the Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program and the Homeless
Female Veterans/Veterans Family Programs. In 2014 Easter Seals New York’s success reaching veterans
in need led to additional funding and support from major grants from BNY Mellon, the Walmart Foundation, Real Networks and the Disabled Veterans National Foundation.
Easter Seals New York provides the Vets2Jobs program in New York City, Long Island and Syracuse.
The program includes skills assessment, resume preparation and practical support—interview clothing,
transportation support. Community outreach and collaboration with local businesses make it possible
to hold job fairs and networking eventsfor returned service members. Once placed, we follow up with
the veterans and their employers, to assure that the job is not merely needed, but a job the vet wants
to hold.

Kessler Center: No Rejection, No Ejection
The Kessler Center, located in Rochester NY, provides programs
for children who have nowhere else to go. At The Kessler Center,
we believe regular involvement of the family in their child’s life is
critical. We strive to help families stay connected throughout their
children’s time in the program.
To facilitate this connection, The Kessler Center relies on unique
program features. Family Guest Suites provide a private apartment
to accommodate families who visit their children from out-oftown. In 2014, The Kessler Center developed a comprehensive
family support program that seeks to build the families’ capacity to
support their student at home and enable a transition out of the
residential program and into a less restrictive school placement
closer to home.
