Liebe Mitglieder und liebe Gäste,
herzlich willkommen zum 12. Internationalen MitOst-Festival! Mehr als 200 engagierte Menschen aus über 30
Ländern finden in den nächsten fünf Tagen in Novi Sad zusammen. Sie feiern Kultur, teilen Wissen und entwickeln Neues. Unser dynamisches Netzwerk wird auch in diesem Jahr mit über 80 Veranstaltungen sichtbar.
In den kommenden Tagen in Novi Sad erwarten euch Diskussionen rund um die Bewerbung Novi Sad’s als
Europäische Kulturhauptstadt. Unter dem Motto „Imagining the Balkans“ werden wir uns zudem spezifischen Themen und Prozessen in der Gastregion annähern. Filmvorführungen, Ausstellungen und Diskussionen schaffen den Rahmen, regionale Konstruktionen und Zuschreibungen aufzuspüren, indem Fremdund Eigenwahrnehmungen dargestellt werden. Workshops und Netzwerkstätten bieten Raum für Austausch
über Instrumente der Projekt- und Organisationsentwicklung, für Planung neuer Projekte und -Kooperationen. Ein Einblick in die aktuellen politischen Entwicklungen in Ungarn, Russland und der Ukraine wird
durch lokale Perspektiven ermöglicht. Ein Musikprogramm zum Mitmachen und Zuhören und eine ganze
Reihe Workshops zu künstlerischer Theorie und Praxis schafft Raum zum Nachdenken und Selbermachen.
Das Team des Projekts „Federation of Urban Imagination“ bringt Amateurkurzfilme aus Serbien mit und
organisiert eine Diskussion zum Thema „Do-It-Yourself Urbanismus“.
Wir bedanken uns sehr herzlich bei allen, die das MitOst-Festival in Novi Sad mitgestalten, bei den freiwilligen Helfern, Workshopleitern, Moderatoren und Künstlern, bei den Förderern und Partnern. Unser Dank
geht an dieser Stelle auch an alle MitOst-Mitglieder, die durch ihr stetiges Engagement, durch Enthusiasmus
und Leidenschaft MitOst zu dem machen, was es ist – ein lebendiges, offenes und vielfältiges Netzwerk.

Dear members and dear guests,
welcome to the 12th International MitOst-Festival. More than 200 people from over 30 countries will meet during the next five days in Novi Sad to celebrate culture, share knowledge and develop new ideas. Through the wide
range of events and the jam-packed programme of the Festival the dynamics of our network becomes tangible.
The festival programme includes discussions on Novi Sad’s application to become European Capital of Culture. In order to come closer and get an idea of the region a bunch of events were organised under the motto
“Imagining the Balkans”: By giving space to self-perception and perception of others, films, exhibitions and
discussions enable to trace the construction and stereotypes of a region. A range of network meetings and
workshops awaits you to exchange instruments of organisational development and to plan new project ideas
and cooperation. An insight into the current developments in Hungary, Russia and Ukraine will be given
through the personal view of local people. A music programme offers to listen but also to make music while
a range of artistic workshops invites you to approach artistic theory and practice by doing it yourself. The
project team of “Federation of Urban Imagination” brings along amateur short films from Serbia and organises a discussion on Do-It-Yourself Urbanism.
We want to thank everyone who dedicated time and energy to the realisation of the MitOst-Festival in
Novi Sad, especially the volunteers, workshop leaders, moderators and artists as well as the supporters and
partners. Our thanks go out to all the MitOst members for their enthusiasm, their indefatigable dedication
and their general creative input. Only their efforts make MitOst and especially the annual MitOst-Festival as
vibrant as it is today. We wish all participants an exciting festival and hope you gain new impressions, have
interesting encounters and generally unforgettable days in Novi Sad.

Observations on Everyday Life (1): A Practical Approach to Intercultural Learning
Gut vorbereitet, die Welt zu sehen? In
diesem Workshop wird die gängige
Seminarpraxis kritisch reflektiert, in der
kulturelle Unterschiede noch immer
reproduziert und Kulturen als abgrenzbare
Objekte angenommen werden. Damit soll
auf Probleme hingewiesen werden, die
bei der Vorbereitung auf einen Auslandsaufenthalt aufkommen können, da
Wahrnehmung so subjektiv ist wie ein
stabiles Kulturkonzept eine Illusion.
Mit dem Ansatz der „Alltagsbeobachtungen“ wird die subjektive Wahrnehmung in interkulturellen Situationen
in das Zentrum einer Methode gestellt,
die sehr einfach im Auslandsaufenthalt angewendet werden und als Türöffner zur Gastregion dienen kann.
Are you well prepared to see the world?
This workshop is critically reflecting the
seminar-practice of reproducing cultural
differences and culture as a clearly limited
object. Pointing at the subjectivity of
perception and the illusion of culture as
a stable concept, the workshop aims to
make conscious about possible problems
coming up during the preparation of a
stay abroad. The subjectivity of intercultural situations will be focused by using
the method of “observations on everyday
life”, which can be helpful for entering
a new and unknown surrounding.

This will be an experimental writing workshop in which the experiment belongs
to everyone and not only to artists or writers. In the form of a social game and in a
shape similar to crossword we will experience Cross-Poetry as an intimate experience through words. Everyone can hear/understand words on his/her own way. In
that sense, this writing is emotional montage of the text. Cross-Poetry is collective
montage of the text. On the words of one text, new one will be made, and then another
one, then another one. With the same words, we write different texts, which will be
appearing one from the other, and they form that we write one – the same – text.

Not only can you hear and look at it in
a documentary by the German director Elke Sasse, but Vitaliy Chupak will
even teach you how to play it. All you
need is a lot of breath and emotion.

This workshop gives an insight how visual impaired persons do relate with visual
art. At the workshop, techniques that a blind person uses to perceive visual art will
be experienced. Through sculptures, photography and pictures in positive relief, you
will walk in the shoes of someone who enjoys these forms of art without sight.

Theatererfahrungen sind nicht notwendig, wichtig ist eure Spielfreude!
During the workshop we will go through
some basic approaches when it comes to
collecting and summarizing information,
presenting it in short report form, transferring it into a comics script, designing the
characters etc. Bring your own pencils and
papers, as well as the basic concept of the
story on which you want to work during
the workshop. Remember – it has to be
a true story. See you at the workshop.

pri sakupljanju i sumiranju informacija
u kratke izveštaje, kreiranju stripovskih
scenarija na osnovu njih, dizajnu karaktera
itd. Ponesite sopstveni alat za crtanje, kao
i papire na kojima crtate. Takođe, ne zaboravite da ponesete i koncept priče na kojoj
želite da radite tokom radionice. Bitno je
da ta priča ne dolazi iz domena fikcije, već

Mit der eigenen Biographie zu arbeiten
ist, wie zu Hause sauber zu machen. Altes
und Unbrauchbares wird von den Dingen
getrennt, die noch benutzt werden sollen.
Biographie ist aber auch wie das Gedächtnis. Durch das Mitteilen von Geschichten
und Erfahrungen, werden vergangene
Momente wieder ins Gedächtnis gerufen
und Menschen versuchen sich damit selbst
zu definieren, die eigene Identität zu finden
und ein Bild für die Zukunft zu entwerfen.

cleaning the house – you separate old and
non-useful things from items that you
still would like to use. Also biography is a
memory. Telling stories and experiences,
recalling events from the past, people are
trying to define themselves, to find their
identity and by that to create an image of
their future. Many artists are using their
biographies in their artistic practice: it is a
tool for reflection and analysis; it is a process of learning and discovering something
new being actually based in your past or
current present. It is also strongly connected to the understanding and perception of
others and their biographies. By watching
them, we learn about ourselves.

The Pulse Workshop is an audio-visual project that aims to characterise the urban
environment by presenting a characteristic soundscape combined with visualisation.
During this three-day workshop, participants will be introduced to the methodology,
starting from preparation, recording, processing, evaluation and contextualisation of
distinctive sounds, as well as introducing basic methods for creating visualisations based
on the resulting soundscapes. A special emphasis will be put on making lightbooms as
an analog slide projector, which proved to be a powerful tool in service of visualisation.

Where can symbols of cultural heritage be found in the city? And in contrary – did a
cultural loss happen and is it visible? This workshop will be an introduction into the
cultural rich history of Novi Sad. In the first part you can get a glimpse into the development of a multiethnic region and multicultural life in the city as well as processes of
homogenisation and segregation including their consequences lasting until nowadays.
The aim is to discuss the need of mutual understanding as an answer and reaction to the
numerous graffiti in the city that are containing messages of intolerance, nationalism
and hatred. If the weather is great, the workshop will be held as a walk across Novi Sad.

Orysia Lutsevych struck the same chord as a lot of actors in the NGO’s and donors’ community: “Western-funded NGOs form an ‘NGO-cracy’, where professional leaders use access to domestic policy-makers and Western donors to influence public policies, yet they are disconnected from the public at large.” Though Ms.
Lutsevych draws her conclusion from analysis of Georgia’s, Ukraine’s and Russia’s
civil sector, we want to ask – what about South Eastern Europe? Is there a NGOcracy? Or should we talk about a donocracy that makes the civil actors perform like

As a candidate for European Cultural Capital in 2021, Novi Sad looks for a various
ways of re-addressing culture as a (urban) development strategy. Beyond a complex
application procedure and weak institutional support, “cultural workers” are facing
dilapidated cultural infrastructure, lightened with occasional cultural (rather entertainment-based) events such as Exit Festival. Lack of alternative spaces for experimentation, politicised cultural institutions and patchwork-like cultural scene calls for novel
ways of thinking about what is the role and function of the culture in the city once
called “Serbian Athens”. We want to discuss possible models, scenarios and trajectories that overcome classical institutional passivity inside “ever-transitory society”.
Particular focus will be on possible relations between spaces of culture and the local
community. Finally, we will try to imagine future steps necessary for collective spatial
appropriation and smooth transition towards open space for various cultural formats.

Diversity is for some people a buzz word, for some a provocation. Without any doubt
the term has made its career, also at MitOst. We publish articles and handbooks for
facilitators, we implement diversity aspects in our empowerment programmes, and
we talk a lot about the need to shape diversity aware of organisational culture. Like
other organisations, we experienced that diversity awareness as an attitude becomes
more and more decisive in a heterogeneous world, where inclusion of people is increasingly important for successful action. Like the Apple Vice, Denise Young-Smith
(who is usually not interested in diverse ecosystems) pointed out: “We believe to our
core that inclusion inspires our very best innovations.” We want to discuss with you
the chances and challenges of diversity in education, civil society and activism.
Heike Fahrun, facilitator and one of the editors of the handbook “Diversity Dynamics”
(available at MitOst’s Editionen from November 2014) wants to share experiences in
international empowerment programmes and trainings, as in organisations as well.

was kann Kunst? Ist Kunst vielleicht eine

werden zu müssen und um sich politischen Themen auf einem seichten Weg
zu nähern? Oder ist Kunst ein gezieltes
Medium, eine Methode, um (MitOst)Themen und -Anliegen anzusprechen bzw.

Collective, solo, cross and travelling exhibitions, symposiums, exchange… So much

can art do? Is it perhaps a form of expression used to avoid the need to be precise

The project F.U.I. was the winner of the competition kultur-im-dialog.moe

Maldoom and his team require perseverance and love to teach the first dancing
steps to the children and teenagers. During
the rehearsals they all experience ups
and downs, insecurity, self-confidence,

to hidden facets of their personalities.

Ausdauer und Liebe, um den Kindern und
Jugendlichen die ersten Tanzschritte zu

Hochs und Tiefs, Unsicherheit, Selbstbewusstsein, Zweifeln und Aufregung und
wurden zu einer emotionalen Reise in
neue, unerwartete Welten und zu versteckten Facetten ihrer Persönlichkeiten.

2.857 Kilometer, vom Schwarzwald bis zum
Schwarzen Meer reisen sechs Freunde in
zwei alten Autos, bepackt mit einer Fülle an
Instrumenten, mit Filmkameras und Zelten
auf dem Dach. Eine Schallplatte aus Belgrad hatte die Musiker und Filmemacher
inspiriert, ostwärts zu reisen und sich auf
die Suche nach den Klängen dieser Region
zu begeben. Die jungen Leute sind selbst
an der Donau aufgewachsen – haben die
Länder, durch die der Fluss fließt, aber nie
genau erkundet. So macht sich die Gruppe
auf ihre Reise, von der Quelle in Süddeutschland durch Österreich, Ungarn und
Serbien bis zum Donaudelta in Rumänien,
wo die Donau ins Schwarze Meer fließt.
Sie treffen Musiker, spielen und jammen
mit ihnen und kommen so der Musik und
den Menschen entlang des Flusses näher.
With two old cars, packed with music
instruments, movie cameras and tents,
six friends are travelling 2,857 kilometers
from Germany to the Black Sea. Listening
to an old Vinyl from Belgrade they were
inspired to travel eastwards to discover
all the sounds of the region. Those six
young people grew up themselves in the
Danube region and travelled through
countries crossed by the Danube. But
they never really explored them. Thus the
travel begins from the well of the Danube
through Austria, Hungary and Serbia
to Romania where the Danube is flowing into the Black Sea. On their way the
six friends meet musicians, make music
together and are slowly coming closer to
the music and the people all along the river.

der Kleinstadt Stip in Makedonien. Wollten
sie eine ihrer Blusen kaufen, müssten sie
dafür einen Monat hart arbeiten. Unter
den Frauen herrscht Vollbeschäftigung,
die Männer hingegen hatten nach der
Wende weniger Glück und sind arbeitslos. Anhand der Textilindustrie wird die

The Gold Fever reached one of the poorest municipalities in Kosova – Novobërdo,
characterised with weak infrastructure, minimal job opportunities and low living standards. Regardless, the relations between Albanians and Serbs are stable
and both communities aim to live in peace. The only wealth that Novobërdo has,
is its cultural inheritance, a heritage that is now protected by law. With the mystery about the “Pot of Gold” this heritage is in danger as well as the pride of the
town… After the film the director Arben Llapashtica will be present for a talk.

At the Border
For the first time since the Civil War started in the beginning of the 90s two antagonistic friends from Serbia go on a journey abroad, to Croatia. While one of them wants
to find a workbench his grandfather made out of stones during his time as a political
prisoner of the socialist Yugoslavia, the other one would like to meet the woman which
he still calls his greatest love determining his everyday life although he has not heard
about her since the war started. “Mirna” is a tragicomic road movie about love, the
irreversibility of time and the sense of friendship. After the film the director Wolfgang Reinke and protagonists of the film will be present for a talk with the audience.

Felix Adler went to Kosovo to realise a project about the region, trying to catch the
spirit of this place that most people in Western Europe just know because of the
war. The results are six stories about Kosovo out of which two will be presented.
Kosovo borders Serbia, its former “motherland”, and Albania, the country most
of the Kosovo-Albanians want to belong to. People passing this border are mostly
either Albanian or Serbian. But what is dividing these people, these two ethnicities? In a photographic experiment people at the borders were photographed together with their cars. The exhibition will confront Serbians and Albanians and
asks for differences, are there any? These border-crossers are accompanied by an
installation of photos of a new highway between Kosovo and Albania. An infrastructural project being built but rarely used (at least as a highway) seems to be an
attempt to unify the countries – not in a politically but in an infrastructural way.

übersäte Senioren mit Hut auf dem Kopf
und Mistgabel in der Hand. Prostitution,
Auswanderung, Korruption und Armut.
All das wird man hier nicht finden. Die
Ausstellung „Diebe & Bettler“ beschäftigt
sich mit dem aktuellen Bild Rumäniens in
Europa, mit vorherrschenden Vorurteilen
und Klischees, die kontinuierlich durch
Printmedien und elektronische Medien
reproduziert werden. Mit den Fotographien
wird das erzeugte Bild politischer, sozialer
und geistiger Rückständigkeit hinterfragt
und eine Konfrontation mit angenommenen kulturellen Unterschieden ausgelöst.

wrinkles and pitchfork in their hands.
Prostitution, Migration, Corruption and
Poverty. That is what you won’t see in this
exhibition. “Thieves & Beggars” is pointing at the widespread picture of Romania,
including many prejudices and stereotypes
which are constantly reproduced in printed
and electronic media. With his pictures,
Aleksej Nutz is questioning the generated
imagination of a social, political and intellectual backwardness and causes a confrontation with assumed cultural differences.

“Across the River” takes a look at the city
Mitrovica in Kosovo, which serves as a
specific example for the tense situation
in Kosovo. Symbolised by the river Ibar,
which is crossing the city, Mitrovica is
divided into a Serbian and an Albanian
part. The bridges over the river, which
earlier connected the two parts sides, now
constitute a border. Coming to the city,
the impression is arising that feelings of
distrust and resentment made the city being paralysed since the conclusion of the
war in 2,000. With the documentary Leonie
Lohwasser and Jasper Bastian aim to reveal
the roots of the situation and investigate
the political and social situation of the
citizens today. Due to personal stories and
pictures, this work wants to expose the
long-term developments, reflecting the
impact of Serbia’s and Kosovo’s endeavours
to approach European Union membership and the level of regional hostilities.

„Across the River“ richtet den Blick auf
die Stadt Mitrovica, welche ein spezifisches
Beispiel für die aktuelle Situation im Kosovo darstellt. Symbolisiert durch den Fluss

Teil geteilt. Die Brücken, die über den Fluss
führen und früher die Stadtteile verbanden,
sind zur Grenze geworden. Und bei einem

Eindruck auf, dass Gefühle des Misstrauens und der Missgunst die Stadt seit dem

Dokumentation sind Leonie Lohwasser
und Jasper Bastian den Ursprüngen dieses
Zustandes und der heutigen sozialen wie
politischen Situation der Bewohner nachgegangen. Durch persönliche Geschichten
und Bilder macht die Ausstellung langfristige Entwicklungen in der Stadt und
Region, die EU-Annäherungen Serbiens
und des Kosovos, sowie vorhandene bzw.
unterstellte regionale Feindseligkeiten
sichtbar und hinterfragt sie gleichzeitig.

There are a lot of good
things happening beside
the current developments
in Ukraine. Maysternya, a
cooperation programme of
the Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg,
is a good example for this. It
has grown into a partnership
with people from the small
Carpathian Village Babyn.
The result is a great one: The
opening of Khata-Maysternya – a place for seminars
and meetings. To turn the
old wooden Hucul House
into a space which can be
properly used, there is still a
lot of work to do. Until now
the whole project is funded
by the team, but the goal is
to find funds and financial
support from different people. MitOst members from
Ukraine will bring things
from different regions of the
country. And for sure there
will be something interesting
for everyone, not to speak
of the fun an auction can
be. The money you spend
buying the presents will
go directly into a fund to
support Khata-Maysternya.
Trotz der aktuellen schwierigen Situation in der Ukraine
gibt es viele positive Entwicklungen. Das Kooperationsprogramm des TheodorHeuss-Kollegs Maysternya
ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür.
Es hat sich zu einer Partnerschaft mit den Bewohnern
des kleinen karpatischen
Dorfs Babyn entwicklelt.
Das Ergebnis ist die Eröffnung von Khata-Maysternya
– eines Ortes für Seminare
und Begegnung. Damit das
alte hölzerne Huzulhaus sich
in einen nutzbaren Raum
verwandelt, muss noch viel
getan werden. Bisher trägt
das Team alle Projektausgaben selbst, sucht aber nach
finanzieller Unterstützung.
Die MitOst-Mitglieder aus
der Ukraine bringen viele
schöne Sachen aus verschiedenen Regionen des Landes
mit, um sie bei dem Festival
zu versteigern und so Gelder
für Khata-Maysternya
zu sammeln. Es wird für
jeden was dabei sein.

Körper ist leicht, durchsichtig, unwägbar.
Der Körper läuft, handelt, lebt, begehrt.
Body Walk ist eine interaktive Intervention
in der Stadt, die sich mit den Körperbildern, Sexualität und Cruising (outdoor
Sex, vorwiegend in der Schwulen Szene)
auseinandersetzt. Sie besteht aus zwei
Teilen: 1. Körper-Stadtrundgang 2. Besuch
eines Cruising Areas. Zur Teilnahme
bitte einen MP3-Player mitbringen.
My body is my utopia. It is the origin of
the world and a crossing point of paths and
spaces. The body itself is nowhere but it
has a form, which again has an outline. My
body is lightweight, transparent, imponderably. The body walks, acts, lives and longs.
Body Walk is an interactive intervention
in the city reflecting body imaginations,
sexuality and cruising (outdoor sex, mostly
inside the gay scene). The walk is divided
in two parts: 1. Body-tour through the
city and 2. Visit of a cruising area. Please
bring a MP3 player for your participation.

NLO – Novosadska Lezbejska Organizacija will present their work and talk
about self-ghetto and ghetto, public spaces and LGBT community.
VCV – Volunterski Centar Vojvodina will talk about their beginnings and developments during a short sit in their office.
The Youth Center CK13 will introduce their activities including the con-
cept and project of the Vegan Open Kitchen “Otvorena Kuhinja”.
Per.Art connects education, art and inclusion and will explain
how and why they are doing it.
The citizens’ initiative NS Blok will introduce their ideas, goals and activi-
ties for activating citizens in Novi Sad for the development of the city.

Engagement, Social Capital und Democracy Promoting: Analysing the Democracy Supporting Potential of Transnational Networks of Civic Engagement
with Particular Reference to MitOst e.V.
Judith Schüler wird die Ergebnisse ihrer
Masterarbeit vorstellen. Die Studie widmete sich der Frage, inwiefern Netzwerke zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements
demokratieförderliches Sozialkapital
produzieren und durch welche spezifischen
Eigenschaften sie sich auszeichnen. Das
entwickelte Analyseinstrument wurde
speziell auf MitOst angewandt. Darüber
hinaus wird diskutiert, ob das vorgestellte
Analyseinstrument geeignet ist, um die
Produktion von sozialem Kapital auch
in anderen Kontexten zu evaluieren.
Judith Schüler will present the results
of her Thesis. The study asks whether
networks of civic engagement produce
democracy supporting social capital and
how these networks represent general
network characteristics. An analysis tool
was developed to characterise the transnational network MitOst. Finally, we
will discuss if the presented analysis tool
is appropriate to evaluate the creation
of social capital in further contexts.

Die Mitgliederversammlung
ist das höchste und wichtigste Organ im Verein. Sie
bestimmt durch Beschlüsse
über die Grundsätze und
Ausrichtung der Vereinsarbeit, wählt den Vorstand,
legt die Höhe der Mitgliedsbeiträge fest und entscheidet
über Satzungsänderungen.
Die Mitgliederversammlung
stellt das grundlegende Forum dar, das allen Mitgliedern die Möglichkeit bietet,
ihre Meinung und ihre
Stimme einzubringen. Der
Vorstand muss den Mitgliedern Rechenschaft über die
Vereinsaktivitäten ablegen.

the organisation’s policy

the organisation’s activities.

kitsch. At nighttimes it occasionally turns into
a place for wild parties. And by day visiting
the picturesque backyard is a must-do.
Vegane Gerichte und Menüs, Sandwiches,
Kuchen – das kleine Restaurant Ananda
bietet leckere Sachen ohne Fleisch und
Tierprodukte und ist dabei nicht teuer.
Vegan dishes, menus, sandwichs, cake – that
is what the tiny restaurant Ananda offers.
Everything is without meat and animal
products and the prices are really fair!

a Parisian bistro. It is more similar to a small
canteen with some regional dishes. Still nice!
