Kultur- und Naturgenuss liegen in Passau ganz
eng beieinander.
Enjoying culture and nature are very close together
in Passau.
Die Geschichte Passaus reicht über 2000 Jahre zurück.
Die Kelten siedelten sich als Erste an, ehe die Römer
kamen. Die errichteten hier das Kastell Batavis, von
dem sich der Name Passau ableitet. Nach dem Ende
der römischen Herrschaft nahmen die Bajuwaren das
Gebiet in Besitz. 739 wurde das Bistum Passau gegründet, das zu seiner Hochzeit das größte im Heiligen Römischen Reich war. Zu einem selbstständigen Fürstentum wurde Passau 1217. Die Regentschaft der zu
Reichsfürsten ernannten Bischöfe hatte bis 1803 Bestand. Dann kam Passau zu Bayern. Die Universität
wurde 1978 gegründet. Heute leben in Passau rund
50.000 Einwohner.
The history of Passau dates back over 2,000 years.
The Celts settled first, before the Romans came. They
built the fortification “Batavis”, from which the name
Passau is derived. After the end of the Roman rule,
the Baiuvarii took the area in possession. In 739 the
diocese of Passau was founded, which became the
largest one in the Holy Roman Empire. The independent Episcopal Principality of Passau under the regency of the prince-bishops existed from 1217 until
1803. Then Passau came to Bavaria. The University
was founded in 1978. Today Passau has approximately
50,000 inhabitants.

Die Landschaft ist von einem einzigartigen Naturschauspiel geprägt, dem Zusammenfluss von Donau, Inn und
Ilz. Aus dem Westen, Süden und Norden kommend fließen die drei
Flüsse vereint als Donau
Richtung Osten weiter.
Das barocke Stadtbild
wurde von italienischen
Baumeistern im 17. Jahrhundert geschaffen. Im
Zentrum der Altstadt erhebt sich majestätisch der
Dom St. Stephan mit
dem größten barocken
Kircheninnenraum nördlich der Alpen und der
größten Domorgel der
Welt. Hoch über den Flüssen thronen die Veste
Oberhaus auf der Donauund die Wallfahrtskirche
Mariahilf auf der Innseite.
Ebenso sehenswert sind
das Alte Rathaus, die Neue Bischöfliche Residenz, sämtliche Kirchen im Stadtgebiet, die Museen und Galerien
sowie die „Künstlergasse“ Höllgasse. Für Passau als
Kunst- und Kulturstadt stehen auch Einrichtungen wie
das Stadttheater, die Redoute, das ScharfrichterHaus
sowie eine Vielzahl an Veranstaltungen wie die Festspiele Europäische Wochen Passau, verschiedene Konzertreihen und Festivals. Hinzu kommen jede Menge
Feste und natürlich der Christkindlmarkt, der zu den
schönsten seiner Art in Deutschland zählt.
Um die Stadt zu erkunden gibt es viele Möglichkeiten.
Besonderer Beliebtheit erfreuen sich „Dreiflüsse“-Stadtrundfahrten per Schiff, die neben Ausflugs- und Galafahrten ins bayerisch-oberösterreichische Donautal von
der örtlichen Reederei angeboten werden. Aufgrund
seiner Lage ist Passau überdies ein echtes Radlerparadies, viele schöne Wanderwege gibt es obendrein.
The landscape is characterized by a unique spectacle
of nature, the confluence of the Danube from the
west, the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the
north. Under the name
“Danube” they continue
their way towards the
east. The townscape was
created by Italian Baroque masters in the 17th
century. In the centre of
the Old Town rises majestically the Cathedral of St.
Stephen with the largest
baroque interior north of
the Alps and the world’s
largest cathedral organ.
The historic town centre
is framed by the Fortress
“Veste Oberhaus” in the
south and the Pilgrimage
Church “Mariahilf” in the
north. Also worth seeing
is the Old Town Hall, the
New Bishop’s Residence,
the churches, museums
and galleries as well as the “Art Alley” Höllgasse. Further examples for Passau as a cultural and artistic
centre are the Theatre, the “Redoute”, the “ScharfrichterHaus” and a lot of events like the European
Weeks Festival as well as various concerts and festivals.
Furthermore, there are plenty of festivities throughout
the year. Not to forget the Christmas Market on the
Cathedral Square, this is one of the most beautiful
ones in Germany.

There are a lot of possibilities to explore Passau.
“Three Rivers“-Sightseeing Boat Tours are particularly
popular. They were offered by the local shipping company as well as boat trips and gala rides down the Bavarian and Upper Austrian Danube Valley. Due to its
geographic location, Passau is also a real paradise for
cyclists. Furthermore, there are a lot of beautiful hiking
trails.

SIGHTS
VESTE OBERHAUS
Der erste Fürstbischof Bischof Ulrich II. begann 1219 mit dem
Bau der Festung hoch über Donau und Ilz. Sie beinhaltet Stilelemente aus Gotik, Renaissance und Barock. Bis 1803 repräsentierten hier die Fürstbischöfe ihre weltliche Macht. In über
50 Räumen ist heute das kulturhistorische Museum der Stadt
untergebracht. Neben mehreren Daueraustellungen ist in
der Saison 2015 nochmals die Sonderschau „Neue Herren –
Neue Zeiten. Passau und das 19. Jahrhundert“ zu sehen. Auf
dem Burgareal befinden sich außerdem ein Aussichtspunkt
und ein Aussichtsturm, die einen traumhaften Ausblick auf
das Dreiflüsseeck und die historische Altstadt bieten.
KLOSTERKIRCHE NIEDERNBURG
Gegründet als Frauenkloster um 740 n. Chr. wurde das Niedernburger „Abteiland“ an der Ilz im 12. Jh. Grundstock des
Passauer Fürstentums. Im Seitenschiff liegt das Grab der Seligen Gisela († 1065) , der ersten christlichen Ungarnkönigin.
NEUE BISCHÖFLICHE RESIDENZ
Das ehemalige fürstbischöfliche Palais (18. Jh.) zeigt Schätze
aus der großen Vergangenheit des Bistums. Sehenswert sind
das Rokoko-Treppenhaus und das Domschatz- und Diözesanmuseum sowie die Prunk- und Repräsentationsräume der
Fürstbischöfe.
CONVENT CHURCH “NIEDERNBURG”
The convent was founded around 740 AD and in the 12th
century it became the foundation of the principality of Passau. The tomb of Blessed Gisela († 1065), the first Christian
Hungarian queen, is located in the southern aisle.
NEW BISHOP’S RESIDENCE
In the former Prince Bishops’ Residence there is an exposition of the treasures of the diocese’s memorable past.
The rococo stairway, the Diocese Museum and Cathedral
Treasury and the Ceremonial Rooms of the Prince Bishops
are worthy of special attention.
JESUITENKIRCHE ST. MICHAEL
Entstanden im Barockstil als Klosterkirche der Jesuiten. Sie
verleiht mit dem ehem. Kolleg der Innpromenade die typische italienische Schauansicht Passaus. Das Wahrzeichen der
Promenade – der Schaiblingsturm – steht für die große Vergangenheit Passaus als Handelsplatz für alpines Salz, das nach
Böhmen und donauabwärts nach Wien transportiert wurde.
FORTRESS “VESTE OBERHAUS“
In 1219 the first Prince Bishop Ulrich II. began to build a fortress high above Danube and Ilz. The present building consists
of gothic, renaissance and baroque parts. Until 1803 the
Prince Bishops demonstrated their temporal power with this
Fortress. Nowadays the Museum of Culture and History is
located in the Fortress, showing historic exhibits in more than
50 rooms. During the 2015 season (15 Mar – 15 Nov) the
special exhibition “New Rulers – New Age. Passau and the
19th Century” can be seen in addition to several permanent
exhibitions. The castle grounds also include a vantage
point and a viewing tower, which offer a wonderful view
on the Three-River-Conjunction-Point and the historic Old
Town.
JESUIT CHURCH ”ST. MICHAEL”
Created in the Baroque style it became the monastery church
of the Jesuits. This church and the former Jesuit house give the
promenade along the river Inn the typical look of an Italian
town. The promenade’s landmark is a mediaeval tower called
”Schaiblingsturm”. There used to be one of Passau’s trade
ports to transport alpine salt to Vienna and Bohemia.
DREIFLÜSSEECK
Am Dreiflüsseeck steht man inmitten eines bezaubernden
Naturschauspieles – dem Zusammenfluss von Donau, Inn und
Ilz. Die Altstadtkulisse zwischen Dreiflüsseeck und Zentrum
ist geprägt von Plätzen, Gassen, Promenaden und den
Türmen von Kirchen- und Bürgerbauten.
RATHAUS
Der im 15. Jh. errichtete Saalbau erhielt nach dem Stadtbrand
von 1662 seine barocke Gestalt durch die Dommeister Lurago
und Carlone. Die Ausmalung mit Passau-Motiven erfolgte um
1890. Beachtenswert sind das Großfresko an der Nordfassade
zur Donau und die Hochwassermarken am Rathausturm.
THREE-RIVER-CONJUNCTION-POINT
The meeting point of the three rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz offers
a fascinating natural spectacle. The historic townscape between the conjunction point and the city centre is characterized
by picturesque squares, winding alleys, enchanting promenades and the soaring towers of churches and bourgeois houses.
TOWN HALL
The main hall was built in the 15th century. After the town fire
in 1662 it was rebuilt in the Baroque style by the famous cathedral builders Lurago and Carlone. The paintings inside were
made around 1890. Outside, there are a remarkable huge fresco
on the north wall and the flood marks on the Town Hall Tower.
DOM ST. STEPHAN
Die Passauer Kathedrale wurde nach dem Stadtbrand von
1662 unter Einbeziehung von Chor, Querhaus und Vierungsturm des gotischen Vordomes im italienischen Barockstil
erbaut. Heute erklingt in ihr die größte Domorgel der Welt,
die aus fünf Einzelorgeln mit 17.974 Orgelpfeifen und 233
Registern besteht.
ST. STEPHEN’S CATHEDRAL
After the devastating town fire in 1662 the Gothic cathedral
was almost completely destroyed. Only the choir, the
transept and the crossing tower have survived. Including
these parts the cathedral was rebuilt in Italian Baroque
style. It houses the world’s largest cathedral organ, consisting of five individual organs with 17,974 organ pipes and
233 stops.
UNIVERSITÄTSKIRCHE ST. NIKOLA
Die gotische Klosterkirche des ehemaligen Augustiner-Chorherrenstifts aus dem 11. Jh. wurde Anfang des 18 Jh. in eine
Barockkirche umgebaut. Die romanische Krypta ist eine der
wenigen erhaltenen Beispiele aus dieser Zeit. Seit 1978 sind
in der Klosteranlage Teile der Universität von Passau untergebracht.

„KÜNSTLERGASSE“ HÖLLGASSE
Zum Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts siedelten sich hier
Passauer Künstler und Kunsthandwerker an. Von Gemälden,
Plastiken, Schmuck und Töpferwaren findet man kunstvolle Exponate und Unikate.
”ART ALLEY” HÖLLGASSE
At the end of the last century artists and craftspeople have
settled down in the Höllgasse. The artists of Höllgasse offer
an unique range of goods, from paintings and sculptures to
jewellery and pottery.
STADTPFARRKIRCHE ST. PAUL
Nordwestlich vom Dom St. Stephan erhebt sich über dem
Eingang zur Fußgängerzone die Barockkirche St. Paul. Einst
diente sie der Bürgerschaft des Neumarktes als Stadtpfarrkirche.
CHURCH ”ST. PAUL”
The Baroque Church ”St. Paul” is situated northwestwards
of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral, above the entrance to the
pedestrian area. It is the former parish church of Passau’s
residents living in the Neumarkt area.
SEVERINSKIRCHE
Die Severinskirche zählt zu den ältesten Passauer Kirchen.
In ihrer Nähe befand sich die Mönchszelle des Heiligen
Severin († 482), genannt Apostel von Noricum.
CHURCH ”ST. SEVERIN”
The Church ”St. Severin” is one of the oldest churches of
Passau. Next to it there was the monk’s cell of St. Severin
(† 482) who was called the Noricum apostle.

Im RömerMuseum Kastell Boiotro sieht man die freigelegten Fundamente der einstigen trapezförmig angelegten
Militäranlage aus dem 3. – 5. Jahrhundert.

CAMPUS CHURCH ST. NIKOLA
The church of a former Augustinian monastery, dating back
into the 11th century, was transformed into a Baroque
church at the beginning of the 18th century. Its Romanesque crypt is one of the few surviving examples of those
times. Since 1978 the former monastery has been part of
Passau University.

ROMAN MUSEUM “KASTELL BOIOTRO”
The foundations of the former Roman military fort, which
dates back to the time between the 3rd and 5th century AD,
can be seen in the Roman Museum.
WALLFAHRTSKIRCHE MARIAHILF
Hoch über der Innstadt erhebt sich die barocke Wallfahrtskirche, die als Marienwallfahrtsort auch heute noch eine
große Bedeutung hat. Zu ihr führt eine überdachte Gebetsstiege mit 321 Stufen. Von hier aus hat man den
schönsten Blick auf die so genannte „italienische“ Seite von
Passau.
PILGRIMAGE CHURCH ”MARIAHILF“
The Baroque Pilgrimage Church, which is an important place
of pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary until today, raises high
above the district ”Innstadt”. Up to the church leads a pilgrimage staircase with 321 steps in an enclosed construction.
From above you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views
of the so called “Italian” Passau.

PASSAUER BERGTOUR

Eine Bergtour mitten in der Stadt? Gibt’s das wirklich? Ja, in
der DREI_FLÜSSE_STADT Passau! Diese Tour führt zu den drei
Passauer Stadtbergen, der Start erfolgt am Domberg. Im
Schatten des Doms St. Stephan verläuft der Weg weiter zum
Fürstbischöflichen Opernhaus und über die Marienbrücke in
die Innstadt, wo bereits die Römer siedelten. Über die überdachte Wallfahrtsstiege mit 321 Stufen gelangt man von hier
zum Kloster Mariahilf, das wahlweise auch über das Mühltal
erreicht werden kann. Auf dem Rückweg hinunter bietet sich
eine herrliche Aussicht auf die italienisch-barocke Altstadt und
die gegenüberliegende Veste Oberhaus. Die nächsten Wegmarken sind das RömerMuseum Kastell Boiotro und mit St. Severin die älteste Kirche Passaus. Über den „Fünferlsteg“ geht
es weiter zum Klostergarten und über die Schanzlbrücke zum
Gampertsteig, der direkt hinauf auf den Georgsberg zur Veste
Oberhaus verläuft. Hier erwarten die Wanderer ein weiterer
Traumblick auf die Stadt und Einkehrmöglichkeiten. Die „Zielgerade“ führt dann über den Wehrgang und die Hängebrücke
zurück in die Altstadt.
A MOUNTAIN TOUR IN PASSAU

Is a mountain tour in a city possible? Of course, in the “Three
Rivers City” Passau! This tour leads to three “mountains” in the
urban area of Passau. It starts at St Stephen’s Cathedral on the
“Domberg” and runs along the Prince Bishop’s Opera House and
the “Marien”-Bridge to the district “Innstadt”, which was settled
already by the Romans. Via a roofed pilgrimage staircase with
321 steps one reaches the Pilgrimage Church “Mariahilf”. An alternative path up there leads through the “Mühltal”. On the
way back down one enjoys a beautiful view of the “Italian” side
of Passau and the Fortress “Veste Oberhaus”, which is located
opposite “Mariahilf”. The next points of interest are the Roman
Museum “Kastell Boiotro” and the Church St Severin, the oldest
one in Passau. Across the “Fünferl”-Footbridge the tour goes on
to the “Klostergarten” and across the “Schanzl”-Bridge to the
“Gampertsteig”, a path that runs directly up the “Georgsberg”
to the “Veste Oberhaus”. At this point one can enjoy another
spectacular view of Passau and find a wonderful opportunity for
a cosy rest. Lastly, the tour leads down along the “Wehrgang”
and across the “Hängebrücke” back to the Old Town.

Inn. The main sight of Burghausen is the castle that crowns the
