Liebe Eltern, Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, Schülerinnen und Schüler,
das einzige Konstante im Auslandsschulwesen ist der Wandel, so heißt es manchmal. Wir müssen mit
dem Wandel leben, der sich auch auf den Wechsel von Lehrpersonal an der Schule bezieht. In diesem
Falle möchte ich Sie darüber informieren, dass Herr Michael Yoder uns zum Ende des ersten
Schulhalbjahres verlassen wird. Herr Yoder wird dann vier Jahre als Sportlehrer an der GIS tätig gewesen
sein und seine Laufbahn im amerikanischen Schulsystem fortsetzen. Wir wünschen ihm bereits jetzt viel
Glück und alles Gute für seine zukünftige Entwicklung.
Selbstverständlich werden wir Ihnen und euch rechtzeitig einen Nachfolger präsentieren, der Herrn
Yoders Arbeit übernehmen wird.

Dear Parents, Faculty and Students:
The only constant element in a German School abroad is change, or at least that is what is said. We simply must
learn to live with change also with respect to teachers. I am therefore today informing you that Michael Yoder will
leave GIS at the end of the first semester. At that time, Mr. Yoder will have been a member of our faculty for four
years and will continue his career at an American school. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
We will, of course, inform you in a timely manner regarding Mr. Yoder’s replacement.
Learn more About St. Martin’s Day
Martinstag (St. Martin’s Day) is the holy day of St. Martin of Tours, a Catholic saint. Originally, St.
Martin’s Day was celebrated in the Catholic areas of Germany and Austria (and other areas of Western
Europe including Flanders, Netherlands, Portugal and Europe), but it has now spread to the more
Protestant areas as well. It heralds the start of the Advent season; followed by Nikolaustag,
Weihnachten, and Dreikönigstag.
In many areas of Germany, it is celebrated with a lantern parade the evening of November 11th.
Children carry their lighted lanterns (either homemade or store bought), singing traditional songs like
“Laterne, Laterne” and “Ich gehe mit meiner Laterne.” Often a Roman soldier on horseback depicting St.
Martin and a beggar walking beside him lead the procession on St. Martin’s Eve. The children follow
with their lantern songs. Yeast bread in the shape of a man, also called “Weckmänner,” is often eaten
on this holiday.
Cultural Background
Martin was born in Hungary in 316 A.D., and then lived in what is now Italy and France. As a teenager,
he joined the Roman army, becoming a soldier like his father. He was eventually baptized into the

Christian church, founded a monastery, and became Bishop of Tours (France). He died on November 8,
397 A.D. The Feast day of St. Martin is Nov. 11, the day he was buried.
Two of the most famous legends of St. Martin are “Martin and his Cloak” and “Martin and the Geese.”
Martin and His Cloak
One snowy winter evening, Martin and the other soldiers were returning on horseback to Amiens. At the
city gate sat a beggar, so cold in his ragged clothing that he could not even ask for help. Martin did not
have any money or food to give him, so he took his sword and cut in half his heavy red soldier’s cloak.
That night Martin dreamed of Jesus Christ. In the dream, Christ wore half of the cloak Martin had given
him and thanked him. This dream convinced Martin to become a Christian and be baptized.
Martin and the Geese
Martin did not want to become Bishop, so he hid near some geese. The people searching for Martin
heard the loudly cackling geese. They found Martin and ordained him Bishop of Tours.

The Martin de Porres School serves youngsters who have had difficulty in the development of their
educational skills and whose behavior has been severely disordered and disruptive, and youngsters
whose school failure is often born of neglect, lack of attention and love, and inability to cope with
the pressures of family disintegration, poverty and crime.

27. Oktober 2015 Liebe Eltern der Klassen 2‐6, am 12. November kommt die Jugendbuchautorin Jutta Richter, die bereits mit dem deutschen Jugendbuchpreis ausgezeichnet wurde, an die GISNY. Sie wird für die Klassen 2‐4 aus ihrem Roman „Das Schiff im Baum“ vorlesen. Eine zweite Lesung findet für die Klassen 5 und 6 statt. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, vorher eine begrenzte Anzahl von Büchern zu einem Sonderpreis käuflich zu erwerben.  „Das Schiff im Baum” für $ 8  „Der Hund mit dem gelben Herzen” für $ 7  „Ich bin hier bloß der Hund“ für $ 7  „Helden“ für $ 8 (eher für die Klassen 5 und 6 geeignet) Sollten die Bücher bis zum 12. November ankommen, können sie auch von der Autorin nach der Lesung signiert werden. Wenn Sie eines der Bücher bestellen möchten, geben Sie bitte den Bestellschein mit dem Geld in einem Umschlag bis Freitag, den 6.11.2015 bei der Klassenlehrerin oder dem Klassenlehrer ab. Wir freuen uns auf die Lesung von Frau Richter und bedanken uns ganz besonders bei dem Goethe‐Institut in NYC, das uns die Lesung ermöglicht. Zur Workshopleiterin: Susanne Leitner hat an der New York University das Studium zum "Personal and Life" Coach absolviert. Ihre inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte liegen im Bereich des persönlichen Wachstums, der Verbesserung der Lebensqualität sowie der WorkLife-­‐Balance. Sie begleitet Führungskräfte und Familienmanager, um ihnen die persönlichen Veränderungsprozesse zu erleichtern und sie dabei zu unterstützen. Vor ihrem Umzug nach New York arbeitete Susanne für mehr als 10 Jahre als Betriebswirtin für die Hotel-­‐ und Gastronomie-­‐Industrie sowie bei einem grossen Weiterbildungsinstitut in Deutschland. Dort war sie für die Organisation und Durchführung von Management-­‐ Seminaren zuständig. Seit ihrem Umzug nach New York engagiert sie sich in der örtlichen Community, so war sie u.a. Co-­‐President des Larchmont Newcomers’ Club. In der GIS Schule wirkte sie viele Jahre als aktives Mitglied des Elternbeirats mit. Ihre beiden Kinder besuchen die GISNY. Seit 2012 leitet sie ihre Coaching Praxis "amoveo – personal and future coaching“. Summary in English: „Adventure USA -­‐ Recognize and Use Opportunities“ Moving to a well-­‐known, and yet a so differently functioning country like the United States, especially New York, places high demands on us. After a few weeks, or even months, of acclimatization we might find ourselves living in a vacuum that can manifest itself in stress, frustration or simply homesickness.
