A lONG TERM PErsPECTIVE IN EVERYTHING WE DO Taking care of things that nobody wants anymore and seeing to it that they will be of use to somebody else is a seemingly simple idea. But it was the basic concept behind the trading company my father founded in 1939, Sten A Olsson Metallprodukter. The company traded in scrap and metal and after this first business activity had been developed ashore, my father turned to the sea. The trade in scrap and metal later became Stena Metall – today, one of Europe’s leading companies in recycling and environmental services. Transporting freight with our own vessels also became a substantial part of the business and in 1972 the company was split into two separate groups. Thereafter the business activities expanded and at the end of the 1970s, we made major investments in offshore and RoRo vessels. Today, the Stena Sphere is one of the largest family owned group of companies in Sweden and in addition to recycling and ferry lines, we are also active in shipping, offshore, properties and finance. Unrelated investments in future businesses is a new activity. Our goal is always to be the best at what we do. To always be our customers’ first choice and to contribute to the development of society. Our long-term approach and work are visible in everything we do. In my view, the best way to contribute to the development of society is to run a profitable organization and continue to make long-term investments. Even if we do more than just recycle scrap these days, I am driven, just like my father, by the idea of sustainability, managing what we have been entrusted with and being able to give back from what we have been given. It is in this way that we can develop and give the next generation something that is better than that which we took over.
