Lake Cleanup a success! See article on page 2.

A Message From The President
First of all I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all who participated in the Lake Cleanup on April 26,
2014. This year we collected and removed 6.57 tons of trash and undesirable objects from our beautiful Lake Jordan.
This represents the largest amount removed since cleanup of the lake began some 23 years ago! A great big Thank
You goes out to Barbara Dreyer and the Lake Cleanup Committee for another job well done.
On May 15, 2014 the Presidents of the Coosa River Lakes Homeowners Associations held the regularly scheduled
quarterly meeting in Pell City, AL. In attendance at this meeting was Mr. Mark Tow, an environmental specialist with
Alabama Power Co. Mr. Tow discussed the growing presence of non-native invasive aquatic plants; waterhyacinth,
water lettuce, watermilfoil, and hydrilla. It is Alabama Power Co.’s desire to prevent the spread of these plants in our
lakes and they are asking that we call 1-800-LAKES11 to report observations of these plants. He handed out a flyer
on Alabama Power Co.’s aquatic plant management program. Mr. Tow also discussed the presence of mosquitoes
and midges and handed out a flyer, on Alabama Power Co.’s Vector Control, that included recommendations on
efforts we can take to reduce breeding sites in our yards. Copies of these flyers are included on the HOBO web page.
th
Finally, please put July 28 on your calendar for the next meeting of the Lake Jordan HOBO Association. We will
th
once again meet at YMCA Camp Chandler. Due to summer camping the July 28 meeting will start approximately 15
minutes later. Thus the meal will begin at 6:45 pm and the meeting at 7:15 pm. Please plan to attend!

Another Record Breaking Clean-Up
In 2010 when Lake Jordan Homeowners & Boat
Owners Association (HOBOs) collected 5.53 tons of
trash from our lake in a single effort – that was
impressive. Even more impressive was on April 26,
2014, HOBOs and local volunteers surpassed that
figure by more than a ton – for a total of 6.56 tons!
It took the efforts of many individuals and sponsors to
make this number a reality. A special thank-you to
Alabama Fish & Game and Elmore County Search and
Rescue who provided both boats and volunteers on
the day of the clean-up. To Alabama Power who
provided not only two boats for the event, but also
donated all the trash-bags, gloves, grabbers and the
awesome 2014 Renew Our Rivers t-shirts. Our special
gratitude is also extended to Advance Disposal for
providing a compactor truck; as well as, their time and
effort to haul away the debris and weigh it. The cleanup simply would not happen without these
organizations!
The efforts of John & Carla McCune, which included
many hours of work before the clean-up buying and
preparing food for the volunteers along with the
SARELCO staff that took care of the cooking, cannot
be forgotten. Special thanks also to those that
furnished the wonderful baked goods and those who
helped keep the “feed line” running smoothly. We also
greatly appreciate the hard work and dedication of Cub
Scout Pack 184 and Boy Scout Troup 185 and their
leaders.
Last, but not least, thank you to all the volunteers that
rolled up their sleeves (and pant legs) and worked to
keep Beautiful Lake Jordan beautiful.
Thanks for everything.

4th of July Fireworks
Saved!!!
A special “Thank You” to Firework
Chairperson Michael Wood and HOBO
board member Alan Williams for pulling
off a miracle – the 4th of July fireworks on
Beautiful Lake Jordan were saved.
As you may or may not know, HOBO
members present at the April 28, 2014
regular quarterly meeting elected to not
fund this years’ fireworks out of the
general budget due to a significant deficit
from last years’ show. Following a rather
heated debate, a vote was taken and the
show was officially cancelled. Luckily, the fight did not end there and many “profirework” members took action.
As a sign of the times, a plea was sent out to the masses via email, the Lake Jordan
website and Facebook and donations started rolling in. It was fairly obvious from the
beginning of the fund-raising efforts that the annual Lake Jordan HOBO Firework
Show is an event that is not only expected but very much appreciated.
Without financial contributions, large and small, the show simply would not have
gone on. The HOBO Association would like to thank everyone, especially our
Corporate Sponsors and Friends of the Fireworks, for their generous donations.
Be sure and pick up a

Association

Minutes of Quarterly Membership Meeting * April 28, 2014
The Lake Jordan Home Owners and Boat
Owners Association Quarterly Membership
Meeting was called to order by President
Gerald Hardy at 7:00 pm on April 28, 2014 at
Camp Chandler on Lake Jordan.
The Invocation was given by Charlie Rowe.
Gerald Hardy welcomed everyone and
declared that a quorum was present to
conduct business.
A motion was made and seconded to
approve the January 27th, 2014 Quarterly
HOBO Association Meeting minutes. The
motion carried.
Treasurer Charlie Rowe presented his
Financial Report dated March 31, 2014 with
an ending non-restricted balance of
$41,804.01. A motion to approve the
financial report as written was made and
seconded. The motion carried.
Invitations were sent to each of the
Candidates for Senate District 30 to come
and briefly speak at the Quarterly Meeting.
Clyde Chambliss, Harris Garner, Bill Harris
and Suzelle Josey all came to the meeting
and were each introduced by Government
Relations Chair, Logan Gray. Each
candidate was given 5 minutes to tell about
themselves and to give their platform.
Donna Wilson of the Search and Rescue of
Elmore County K9 Unit was a guest at the
meeting. She talked about the very important
role of the trained dogs when locating missing
persons. They are extremely instrumental
when tracking missing children, people with
Alzheimer’s, etc. They have a T-Shirt Sale
fundraiser going through May 20th. You can
also find out more about them at Search and
Lake Jordan Homeowners and Boat Owners Association
Rescue of Elmore County, Search and
Rescue of Elmore County K9 on Facebook. .
The Fireworks issue was discussed.
Because not enough donations were received
to cover the cost of the fireworks show in
2013, Resolution 13-2, the Fireworks Policy
that was voted on and passed in 2013,
required that a vote of the membership be
taken to determine if the Lake Jordan HOBO
Association will sponsor and pay for the July
4th fireworks in 2014. In 2013, the
Association budgeted $2500 toward the
fireworks (total cost for 2013 was $7000).
The donations received over and above the
earmarked $2500 did not cover the remainder
of the expense, therefore additional funds
had to come out of the HOBO Budget to pay
the balance. Michael Wood, Chair of the
Fireworks Committee, reported that for 2014
the cost of the fireworks show had increased
to $7,500. A lengthy discussion about the
pros and cons of the HOBO’s sponsoring the
show took place. It is the general consensus
of the membership that fundraising outside of
the membership donations received is
needed in order to fund the July 4th fireworks
show each year. The fireworks discussion
brought up the point that we really need to
increase the HOBO membership numbers as
well. The HOBO newsletter is mailed out to
1100 addresses and, for the April newsletter,
only 10% of those receiving the newsletter
had paid their dues and only a portion of
those gave donations towards the fireworks.
A motion was made by Alan Williams and
seconded by Judy Ruffer for the HOBOs to
sponsor the July 4th fireworks show again in
2014 and to fully fund the cost from HOBO
general funds, if necessary, while continuing
to work to raise funds to pay for the show.
By a narrow margin, the membership voted
not to fully fund the fireworks show in 2014
due to the shortage of funds received for the
Page 6
2013 show and that additional payment had
to be made out of the general fund in 2013 to
cover the contract cost.
Committee Reports
Lake Clean Up – Barbara Dreyer reported
that it was a very successful day!
Approximately 7 tons of trash, the most ever,
according to Barbara, was collected. Great
Job!
Water Quality – On April 4th, Dot Franklin, Joe
McDonald, and Phyllis Kennedy were
recertified in chemical monitoring. Dot, Joe
and Phyllis along with Bill Sims and Gay
Carlisle also learned to do Bacteria
Monitoring. The April 25th class for chemical
monitoring was cancelled due to low
participation; however, the few who were
signed up can take the class being offered on
May 17th in Prattville.
Water Safety – Dave Kowalski is still working
with the Department of Conservation to get
the hazard buoys placed. He has asked that
the HOBO Offices/Board send a letter of
formal request.
Publicity – Marci Williams was happy to report
that the large HOBO Association roadside
signs are up now and we all agreed that they
look great! Thank you to Toby Langley for
constructing the sign posts and putting them
up for us.
Newsletter – Marci Williams asked that all
items for inclusion in the next HOBO
Newsletter be in by June 1, 2014.
Area Reps – Gerald Hardy indicated that he
would like to see the Area Reps program reenergized!
Website – Please let Sharon Massey know if
you would like anything posted to the
website. If you are not receiving HOBO
Association emails and you wish to, please
visit the website at www.lakejordanhobo.org
and click on the “Join Our E-Mail List” link.
Phyllis Kennedy spoke to the membership
about “Working by the River” a joint endeavor
of the Wetumpka Area Chamber of
Commerce and the Kelly Fitzpatrick Memorial
Gallery that encompasses a series of special
events that will take place in downtown
Wetumpka and throughout the River Region
this summer. “The Way We Worked” is a
traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian
Institute brought in partnership through the
Alabama Humanities Foundation to the
Elmore County Museum May 23- July 6th.
“The Dixie Art Colony, A Look at It's Lasting
Legacy” is a retrospective exhibition, open
May 23rd- July 6th in the Wetumpka City
Administration Building. Original works by
Kelly Fitzpatrick, Warree Carmichael LeBron,
Frank Applebee and other works will be
included. A motion was made and seconded
that the HOBO Association grant $500 to the
project. The motion carried.
The $50 raffle drawing was held and
congratulations to the winner, Mary Ann
Owen.
There being no further business, Gerald
Hardy adjourned the meeting. The next
meeting will be held on Monday, July 28,
2014 at 7:00pm (6:30 pm if you want to eat)
at Camp Chandler.
Respectfully Submitted,
Joyce Wright
Secretary

What’s For Sale On the Lake?
Lake residents are always interested in what’s for sale on the lake so they can tell their city dwelling
friends and relatives. This column will be available to all HOBO members who have listings or property
for sale on the lake. If you have a listing that you would like to appear in the next HOBO Newsletter,
please send it to Marci Williams at [email protected]. We’ll look forward to making this a useful
tool for home sellers and buyers.
Beautiful point lot on Lake Jordan with approximately 450 ft. of

yet cozy living room with great views when entering the home.
Huge family/dining room with fireplace and lots of windows, all
open to kitchen with extraordinary views. Silestone kitchen
countertops, roll out shelving in cabinets. Jenn Air range with
downdraft venting. Attached heated and cooled garage with work
area. Two slip covered boathouse with power lifts and storage
room. Boat ramp on property. Additional boathouse currently used
for storage including large heated and cooled workshop with balcony overlooking lake. Two car carport
next to workshop. Plenty of parking area on property.
