PUBLISHER’S NOTES
Synergy is the essence of principle-centered leadership. It
is the essence of principle-centered parenting. It catalyzes,
unifies, and unleashes the greatest power within people.
What is synergy? Simply defined, it means that the whole is
greater than the sum of its parts.
The essence of synergy is to value differences-to respect
them, to build on strength, to compensate for weakness.
Synergy is almost as if a group collectively agrees to subordinate old script and to write a new one.
Value the difference in the essence of synergy-the mental,
the emotional, the psychological difference between people.
And the key to valuing those differences is to realize that all
people see the world, not as it is, but as they are.
The person who is truly effective has the humility and reverence to recognize his own perpetual limitations and to
appreciate the rich resources available through interaction
with the hearts and minds of other human beings.
Synergy works it’s a correct principle. It is the crowning
achievement of all previous habits. It is effectiveness in an
interdependent reality-it is teamwork, team building, the
development of unity and creativity with other human beings.
Synergy is collectively working together but at the same
time each party maintains their own identity. There should
be more positive synergy in the body of Christ. It doesn’t
matter what assignment God gives each of us we are all
placed in an interdependent position. If you are a gospel
announcer brokering your time you are looking for sponsors and advertisiers to help pay for your time. If you are a

SNERGY, God has given each of us a dream.
It is up to us to put the correct pieces of the puzzle together
that will make our dream and vision a reality. Bottomline
we live in an interdependent world, in order to move to the
next level we have to position ourselves to maximize on
our positive synergy. God Bless!

In His Time
By: Andr’e L. Carter
How many times have we heard these
words? What about “Not by my watch
but by his clock.” I went to bed with
these words in my mind. I was meditating and i asked God what does this
saying really. So he broke it down for
me and I wanted to share what he said.
He said, In My Time I gave you life the
same as Adam and Eve in the beginning. Hummm that was deep. I did the
same for you when you were conceived. I knew what you were going
to do before you even did it. I gave
you a job and all I asked for was ten
percent and you could have the ninety
percent to take care of your responsibilities. I did all of these things in my
time for you do you agree. I said yes
Lord I agree. He said I gave you a job
and what did you do, I gave you a place
to live, do you agree, I said yes Lord. I
gave you everything thing you asked
for In My Time!
But what did you do with everything I
gave you In My Time... You lost the
job I gave you in my time because you
couldn’t get up on time to go to work.
You lost the wife, family and home I
gave you because you wanted to do
things your way and in your time not
mine. I really couldn’t argue because
he was right. As I look back over my
life. Each time it was my own doing
and that’s why we end up where we
are. He wasn’t responsible for my bills
I was. After all he gave me the job paying good money that would easily take
care of my responsibilities but I made
the wrong choices. We all do!
because we are in denial even though
we go to church every time the church
doors open.
He begins to bless us with a little just
to see how faithful we are before he
gives us more... And some of us still
don’t get. When He gives it to us in
His time. We are now getting things
back in place He has once again blessed
us.
In the business He has given me like so
many others we are dependent on man
and this is where the test begins.
We have over head and responsibilities
that have to be met. We prayed and In
His Time, He gave us what we prayed
for. Christian really aren’t cheap the
problems with Christians is real simple.
They are all so caught up in the word/
. That they believe they are suppose to
receive because we are all believers.
These are the Christians who uses scriptures, they want to pray for you or they
have a word from the Lord. They could
have a pocket full of money and still
not support you. For some reason they
believe that you are suppose to give
them what God has blessed you with
for being obedient.
These are the Christians who have not
and do not understand that God has
already blessed you, because you understand the principle. That what ever
He blesses you with take care of your
business because when you do He is
going to continue to bless you... That’s
when faith kicks in... That’s when you
get down to your last dime and he steps
in and blesses you... You see God will
continue to bless you In His Time but

In His Time is right He has given us
everything we asked for but once we
get it. Its different we abuse it, the same
as Adam and Eve did in the Garden of
Eden. As we get older we gain wisdom, knowledge and have a better
understanding of “In His Time.” In
closing I would like to say that He has
brought us through another year. Be
thankful for what he has done for you
in 2006. When you take care of your
business for what God has given you.
Be a blessing and respect the person
that you do business with and understand God has blessed that person In
His Time and simply be a blessing to
and for that person.
We know that every thirty day monthly
expenses are due. It takes money to be
in business, support the independent
gospel artist, support the person God

product or service. You have no ideal

my prayer that this article has blessed
my subscribers. Why should any person working for the master have to get

Black Churches Urged
to Return to Reclaim
Heritage
Indianapolis, IN — (Special to the
The Belle Report from the
Indianapolis Recorder) - Hundreds of
individuals gathered at Eastern Star
Church last week to hear an all-star
list of national and local leaders
during the National Dialogue and
Revival for Social Justice in the Black
Church conference. The interactive
conference, which started with a
breakfast session Monday morning
and ended with a revival service on
Tuesday evening, offered a forum that
Black leaders and citizens could use
to discuss solutions to various
challenges facing African-Americans
in urban areas across the country.
One of several conferences presented
nationwide by the National Action
Network (NAN), a progressive civil
rights group led by Rev. Al
Sharpton, was designed to help
Black churches reclaim their heritage
of social activism.
Too many pastors, Sharpton believes,
have strayed away from the advocacy
of such ministry leaders as Dr. Martin
Luther King and Father Divine and
have embraced a more materialistic
version of “prosperity ministry.”
“Part of the problem is many people
don’t understand why the Black
church was established in the first
place,” Sharpton said. “The Black
church itself was formed in protest
to segregation in the White church.
We must realize that church work is
not just about getting your praise on,
it’s about getting in the trenches and
changing people’s lives.”
Sharpton noted that some AfricanAmericans believe the time for civil
rights organizations has passed,
although many observers cite the
poor federal response to Hurricane
Katrina and attempts to scale back
affirmative action as signs of lingering
discrimination. Blacks, he continued,
are still four times more likely to be
incarcerated, five times more likely
to be denied a loan, less likely to
graduate from high school and have
a higher incidence of illnesses such
as diabetes and HIV.
“One day a lady wished me luck in
‘my struggle,’” Sharpton quipped. “I
asked her, ‘When did they free you
and keep me?’ We have made
progress as a people, but the struggle
won’t be over until we are truly equal
and treated fairly like everybody
else.”
Charles Steele Jr., president of the
Southern Christian Leadership
Conference, noted that the church is
the best institution to take AfricanAmericans to the next level spiritually
and socially. “The church is the only
independent institution in the Black
community,” he said. “One of the
goals with this national dialogue is to
see to it that the church returns to its
status as an advocate of our people.”
Comedian and activist Dick Gregory,
Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III,
Jonathan Jackson (Rainbow/PUSH
coalition activist and son of Rev. Jesse
Page 6
Jackson) were among the other
national speakers who had
participants standing on their feet at
various phases of the conference. A
panel of local community leaders led
a discussion about topics such as the
need to help more African-American
families in Indianapolis go from being
renters to becoming homeowners, the
use of early education in reaching
youth and preventing crime, freeing
people from debt and credit problems
and making better lifestyle choices to
prevent diseases prevalent in the
African-American community.
Many citizens who attended the
conference seemed pleased that it
wasn’t just about talk, but motivated
them to take serious action steps in
their neighborhoods, such as
mentoring youth and telling people
about the importance of voting,
particularly next week. “I really
enjoyed the spiritual and social
element of the preaching, it was really
inspiring,” said Lolita Locke.
For Rev. Charles Harrison, pastor of
Barnes United Methodist Church and
one of several local ministers who
spoke at the conference, the event
offered hope in the face of social
challenges. “The same God who
brought us through slavery and the
civil rights movement is the same
God who is with us now,” Harrison
said. “If God is for us, who can be
against us? Tonight we have learned
that we can restore our community
and reclaim our children.”

Universal Music sues MySpace for copyright infringement
Los Angeles, CA — Universal Music
Group on Friday sued MySpace.com,
claiming the online social-networking
hub illegally encourages its users to
share music and music videos on the
site without permission. The recording
company is seeking unspecified
damages, including up to $150,000 for
each unauthorized music video or song
posted on the Web site. The lawsuit is
the latest legal salvo in a wider conflict
between established media against
Internet companies whose technology
is challenging the traditional ways
music, video and other content are
distributed and consumed.
In its complaint, filed in U.S. District
Court, Universal Music contends
MySpace, a unit of News Corp.,
attempts to shield itself from liability
by requiring users agree to grant the
Web site a license to publish the content
they upload to the site. Users, however,
have no such authority over works they
don’t own. The Web site also
“encourages, facilitates and participates
in the unauthorized reproduction,
adaptation, distribution and public
performance,” according to the suit.
Universal contends that much of the
media posted by users of MySpace is
not user-generated at all, but actually
music and videos stolen from copyright
owners.
“MySpace is a willing partner in that
theft,” the lawsuit claims. MySpace
issued a statement saying it is in full
compliance with copyright laws and is
confident it will prevail in court. “We
have been keeping UMG closely
apprised of our industry-leading efforts
to protect creators’ rights, and it’s
unfortunate they decided to file this
unnecessary and meritless litigation,”
the statement read. “We provide users
with tools to share their own work _
we do not induce, encourage, or
condone copyright violation in any
way.” In the complaint, Universal
singles out features on the Web site that
enable users to save copies of videos
to their profile pages or share them with
others on the site. Universal Music also
claims the MySpace Video and
MySpace Music services also enable
users to access copyright material
without permission.
Universal Music, a unit of Paris-based
Vivendi SA and the world’s largest
recording company, is home to
recording artists such as U2, The Killers
and Kanye West. “Our music and
videos play a key role in building the
communities that have created
hundreds of millions of dollars of value
for the owners of MySpace,” the
company said in a statement. “Our goal
is not to inhibit the creation of these
communities, but to ensure that our
rights and those of our artists are
recognized.”
Earlier Friday, MySpace said it was
testing technology aimed at enabling
content owners to flag videos on the
site that they find contain unauthorized
copyrighted material. The flagged
content is then removed by MySpace.
The company expects to roll out the
feature in a few weeks. Currently,
MySpace takes down content from its
users’ pages when it receives a notice
from a copyright holder. Last month,
MySpace began using “audio
fingerprinting” technology to block
users from uploading copyrighted
music to the site. That technology
works by checking audio files against
a music database from Gracenote Inc.
Those steps, however, failed to
swayUniversal Music. Efforts between
the two companies to forge a licensing
Page 7
deal failed this week.
In a speech in September, Universal
Music CEO Doug Morris accused
MySpace of violating copyright laws.
The executive also charged videosharing site YouTube.com of doing
the same. The record company and
YouTube Inc. have since reached a
licensing deal. Last month, Universal
Music filed separate copyright
infringement lawsuits against online
video-sharing sites run by Grouper
Networks Inc. and Bolt Inc.
It’s Bigger Than You
Think...
A few month ago there was an article
that MySpace was working on a new
technology to offer the opportunity for
independent artist of all genre’s to sale
their music on MySpace. This technology would allow independent artist
who owns the copyrights to their music the opportunity to sale their music
through their MySpace page.
I am sure that this litigation will probably be put on hold on this new opportunity. All it takes is a few bad apples
to spoil the barrel. The digital download business in a multi million dollar
business.
My question is how will it affect the 3
million independent gospel artist currently on MySpace. The question is
how many independent gospel artist are
actually selling music on MySpace?
My suggestion to the gospel artists is
to place your music on as many sites
as possible and not rely on one source
but more importantly make sure you
have your copyrights in order.
“LOOK BEYOND
THE LONELINESS”
By: Evangelist Regina B. Howard
As the holiday season approaches, there
is excitement in the air. We are thinking
about our families coming together and
all of the good food we will partake
of. For some, this season brings about
that type of crisp, cool, clean weather
they enjoy. That winter weather is
perfect for roasting chestnuts,
marshmallows or just sipping hot apple
cider in front of a warm cozy fireplace.
God wants us during these times to be
thankful and to celebrate His son. The
family and friends are second to this,
or at least should be.
You’ll realize it really isn’t worth all of
the loneliness, heartache, anger,
bitterness or thoughts of suicide. God
loves us all, and wants us to receive all

being lonely.
I understand that sometimes loneliness
comes from having lost a loved one to
death and that is often a hard pill to
swallow especially if you all were close,
but you know they would want you to
continue celebrating life without them.
God is also able to heal you of your
hurt and give you the strength you need
to go on. Grieving is important, and
we should never feel bad for doing so.
A person should only feel regret in
grieving, when they totally absorb
themselves in the death of a friend or
loved one. This meaning, they stop
living. They don’t give 100% in
anything they do. They are living a dead
life. Stop!! Make this holiday season
the one where you start over. A new
beginning is what you should declare.
Then there are those who are single or
have no family or friends to celebrate
with. This time of year brings about
feelings of loneliness, heartache, anger,
bitterness and even thoughts of
suicide. If you are in this category, you
are not alone. There are so many people
who feel they have been forgotten
about, or are not loved. To this group
of people I would say: “you truly are
not alone”. It appears that this would
be easy for one to say, who will be

A BIRTHDAY PRESENT
FOR JESUS
“GIFTS FROM THE HEART”
By: Latatia Washington
“For God so loved the world that He
gave His only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16
“Joy to the World! The Lord is come:
Let Earth Receive Her King!” (Song
Author: Isaac Watts)
Many years ago in a town called
Bethlehem, unto us was born a king.
This beautiful baby boy was given to
the world as a gift of love, sacrifice and
salvation from our Heavenly Father (the
Almighty God). God’s gift, the King
of all kings, was given the name Jesus
and through Him alone could those who
believe in God be saved. He was (and
is) the only begotten son of God and
truly the most loving and sacrificial gift
that could ever possibly be given.
Resulting from the deep love God has
for us, He gave His very best. Doing
so, He provided us with the perfect
example of how we should also give to
others. Although God knew that His
son would be given to a world that
would reject, not acknowledge or
receive Him, God did not refuse to give
us His most cherished gift (Jesus).
Having full knowledge that His only son
would be abused and not appreciated,
God didn’t wait for us to first prove

Him. They took out their gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh and gave them
to Him”). The question now might be:
How can we also give gifts to Christ?
This Christmas, in addition to our
general gift-giving, we can give a gift
to Jesus by not only giving to those we
expect to receive gifts back from or
who are on our “Christmas List.”
Instead, we can challenge ourselves to
give also to those whom we may never
meet, hear say “thank you” or ever
receive anything back from (who have
nothing to give). With gladness we
should give gifts to the homeless, the
shut-in, those who are in hospitals,
prisons, orphanages and/or shelters
(possibly spending Christmas alone).
We can surprise an elderly man or
woman in a nursing home, with a token
of love (gift). Giving to others in this
manner is the next best thing to giving
gifts directly to Jesus. The Lord stated
in Matthew 25:40: “The King will reply,
‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did
for one of the least of these brothers of
mine, you did for me.’ “ During this
Christmas season, as we celebrate the
Gift of Jesus and His birth, it is
important that we keep Christ the
central focus of this glorious time of
the year. Sharing the many gifts our
Lord has given us with His other
children who are in need, is an excellent
way of saying “Happy Birthday” and
giving gifts to Jesus!
“Christ-mas” is a special day that brings
forth high levels of warmth, closeness,
good tidings and cheer. Christmas
Carols are sang, trees are decorated,
gifts and love are shared. “Merry
Christmas” wishes can be heard
everywhere! In observance of
Christmas, one of the most common
occurrences is the act of “gift-giving.”
Malls are packed with eager and excited
shoppers purchasing gifts for family
members and friends: Some buying
gifts simply because its Christmas;
Many giving out of the kindness of their
hearts; Others purchasing out of
obligation while some give with
expectation of getting something back
in return. Its often said that it is better
to give than to receive. God exercised
this principle when He gave to us with
love. When we give from our hearts,
as God did, we display brotherly love
as God’s Word (Bible) states we should
(Romans 12:10). Giving in this manner
is truly a blessing. Whether we receive
a gift from someone we have given a
gift to or not, we are not disappointed.
If we do not receive the type of gift we
expected, our feelings are not hurt.
Additionally, we can rejoice with 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 “But this I say: He
assurance that we are giving the way who sows sparingly will also reap

Just two days after moving to Atlanta,
I was in the car with one of my best
friends and her niece. She left her children with a family member and we were
on our way to shop. Her niecesat in the

I shared my goals with them and realized they were less interested in what I

spirit. There was only peace.

The Pursuit of Happyness
By: Andr’e L.
I would like to share with you my personal experience when I was introduced to a remarkable man who by the way I never got to meet. It was the latter part of 2001. I was contacted
by a friend Alfreda Green who wanted me to do an article on her employer Mr. Christopher
Gardner. She was so excited as she began to tell me about all of his accomplishments and
becoming a self made man in the world of finance on Wall Street.
We set up many appointments over the next few months to schedule and interview for the
magazine but I never actually got the interview because Chris was just to busy between
writing his book and planning the movie about his life. At that time I was attending meetings
at Christ Universal Temple on Wednesday nights for men and I was approached again by
another friend who told me about this remarkable man by the name of Christopher Gardner.
I advised my friend that I was already speaking with someone who worked for Chris and
was looking forward to the interview we where trying to schedule. That’s not all, I was
having breakfast one morning at my favorite restaurant the Original Pancake House on the
Southside of Chicago and here comes another friend who also suggested that I do an article
on guess who, Christopher Gardner...
All I could do was wait for Alfreda to set the date and time so we could make it happen. I
was getting more and more excited as people who had the opportunity to attend events and
meet Chris shared how he inspired them. Everyone that I met had received a seed. One
friend expressed that Chris was a true role model because he wasn’t an NBA player with a
big contract. He wasn’t an NFL play with a big contract and he wasn’t in the entertainment
(Rap or Hip Hop) business at all. He was just and ordinary man who changed his life based
on his situation and circumstances with the true desire to change his life.

Starring
Will Smith, Thandie Newton
and Jaden Smith
This is my personal opinion The Pursuit of Happyness is going to be a block buster for the
holiday season the movie is going to be released ten days before Christmas. I was watching
the news on November the 15th when the newscaster was talking about a new movie that
was going to be released on December 15. They showed the movie trailer which will feature
Will Smith and his son Jaden playing the lead roles. After the news I couldn’t wait to get
online to do my own research about Christopher Gardner. As I watched the trailer online I
felt tears rolling down my cheeks. Here we have a true man of God a role model that will be
a blessing to every African American man around the world. A man who faced many trails
and tribulation. A man who was able to overcome many challenges that he and his son
faced. A man who did not abandon his son to pursue his dream. Yes! There are a lot of black
men who did not abandon their children. That is why I predict that this movie is going to
touch the lives of every person who sees the movie. Before the movie is release I stand and
give Mr. Christopher Gardner a standing ovation for sharing his life story through his
Book and Movie.
Even though I was never able to interview Christopher Gardner. Its okay! I was able to
meet him through the people who had the opportunity to work for him as well as the ones
who had the opportunity to hear him speak. I have no doubts that this will be one of the
greatest movies of our time... Thank you Chris for sharing your life story.

Will Smith & Chris Gardner
Christopher Gardner
Bio
is president and CEO of the Chicago-based
brokerage firm Gardner Rich & Co., which
he founded in 1987. Prior to launching his
own firm, Mr. Gardner worked for several
prestigious Wall Street firms. He landed his
first job in the securities industry in 1981 with
Dean Witter Reynolds, coming out of their
training program. Later, he spent four years
with Bear Stearns & Co., where he became a
top earner. A self-made multi-millionaire,
Gardner is intent on giving back to the
communities where he conducts business
because he has never forgotten his humble
beginnings or the odds he has surmounted.
Christopher Gardner’s accomplishments are
extraordinary on their own merit, but are all
the more astonishing because of the
unimaginable obstacles he encountered on the
road to success. Always hard working and
tenacious, a series of circumstances in the early
1980’s left Gardner homeless in San Francisco
and the sole guardian of his toddler son.
Unwilling to give up Chris Jr. or his dream of
financial independence, Gardner started at the
very bottom of the financial industry ladder
and pulled his way up, often spending his
nights in a church shelter or a bathroom at a
Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Oakland.
The amazing story of Gardner’s life will be
soon be published as an autobiography, The
Pursuit of Happyness, by Amistad/Harper
Collins on May 23, 2006, and will also be the
subject of a movie with the same title starring
Will Smith as Gardner to be released by
Columbia Pictures in December 2006.
Born February 9, 1954 in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, Gardner never knew his father.
He lived with his mother, Bettye Jean Gardner,
and her family and, when necessary, in foster
homes. Despite a life of hardship and
emotional scarring, he always had supreme
love and admiration for his mother, who was
a trained schoolteacher.
His mother taught him some of the greatest
lessons of his life, which he follows to this
day. When Gardner told her he wanted to be
the great jazz trumpeter Miles Davis she said,
“Son, there’s only one Miles Davis and he
got that job. So you have to do something
else.” He understood from that day forward
that his job was to be Chris Gardner - whatever
that entailed. Bettye Jean also taught him that
in spite of where he came from, he could attain
whatever goals he set for himself by saying,
“If you want to, one day you could make a
million dollars.” Gardner believed this to be
fact, and it allowed him to persevere through
the years when and his son were struggling
for survival and a better life.
Straight out of high school, Gardner enlisted
in the Navy, just like his uncles, his role models,
had done previously. After the military,
Gardner went to San Francisco and took a
job as a medical supply salesman. Then he
reached a turning point in his life. In a parking
lot, he met a man driving a red Ferrari. “He
was looking for a parking space. I said, ‘You
can have mine, but I gotta ask you two
questions.’The two questions were: What do
you do? And how do you do that? Turns out
this guy was a stockbroker and he was making
$80,000 a month.” That pivotal encounter
gave Gardner a clear career goal, but he still
needed a way into the world of high finance.
Without experience, connections, a degree, or
pedigree, Gardner began knocking on doors,
applying for training programs at brokerages,
even though it meant he would have to live on
next to nothing while he learned. When he
was finally accepted into a program, he left
his job in medical sales. But his plans collapsed
when the man who offered him the training
slot was fired, and Gardner had no job to go
back to. Things got worse. He was put in jail
for $1,200 in parking violations that he
couldn’t pay. Chris Jr.’s mother left and
Gardner, despite his circumstances, fought to
keep his son because, as he says, “I made up
my mind as a young kid that when I had
children, my children were gonna know who
their father was.”
Page 13
Although he managed to enter a training
program at Dean Witter Reynolds, Gardner’s
meager stipend as a trainee meant he, like so
many working poor in America, had a job
but couldn’t make ends meet. Chris’s coworkers never knew he spent his evenings
trying to arrange day care, find food and a
safe place for him and his son to sleep. After
spending nights in a locked bathroom at an
Oakland subway station, Gardner persuaded
Rev. Cecil Williams, founder of a new shelter
program for homeless women at Glide
Memorial United Methodist Church, to let
him and Chris Jr. stay at the shelter.
Gardner passed his licensing exam in 1981
on the first try. He arrived early, stayed late
and worked the phones day after day to lure
new clients. He and Chris Jr. got an
apartment, and in 1983 he joined Bear,
Stearns & Company. After becoming a top
producer, first in San Francisco and later in
New York, Gardner left in 1987 to establish
Gardner Rich & Company, Inc., an
institutional brokerage firm specializing in
the execution of debt, equity and derivative
products transactions.
With a network of offices in New York,
Chicago and San Francisco, GRC has grown
by focusing on its commitment to provide
quality service and excellent trade executions
for clients. The firm executes trades for some
of the nations largest institutions, public
pension plans and unions. Under Mr.
Gardner’s directions, GRC has adopted a
“give back to the community” program. The
Company donates 10% or more of the
company’s earnings toward school and
educational projects in the communities it
serves.
Chris Gardner’s remarkable story of struggle,
faith, entrepreneurialism, and fatherly
devotion has catapulted him beyond the
notoriety he has found on Wall Street. He
has been featured on CBS’ “Evening News
with Dan Rather” and ABC’s “20/20,” as
well as being the subject of profiles in many
newspapers and national magazines.
WHERE’S TONEX?
From Slave 2 Multimedia Mogul
By: Civic Taylor
When one tries to understand the enigma, elusiveness
and even the downright rebellion of a trailblazer, their
mind will begin to swim with various questions. Why
is it that people who don’t have to experience ridicule,
somehow in some foreign sense are drawn to it? It
seems that historically those who have new ideas and
revelations that are not conventional, initially they
are labeled as “heretics” or crazy men. Some are
even imprisoned because of their stark discoveries
that go against the grain of what is considered
politically safe. The question now becomes? But just how safe are we??
Everyone is definitely in a frenzy to get a hold on who’s leaving the
archaic industry just as much as they are trying to figure out where they
are headed within 18 months when potentially the entire “Titanic”? a.k.a.
“Music Industry” as we know it will literally sink in front of our very
eyes. Digital downloading has taken over the planet and in the words of a
recent Tower Records marquee I recently read, “It’s the End of the World
as we know it”. Indeed this whimsical approach as a statement is a testament
to the demise of such a landmark place where musical connoisseurs used
to gather to purchase their latest cravings—something’s changed.
Changed!...changed! changed!, I’m so glad “He changed me”.
His first presentation for a glimpse into the future is the musical
phenomenon Anthony Brown and his vocal dynamo group called
Answered Prayers a.k.a. AJB & A.P.
They have a Christmas Album entitled “Happy Holidays” Produced by
Anthony Brown and Co-Produced by Tonex. The album is now available
on their website www.myspace.com/answeredprayers8. Anthony Brown
serves as Musical Director for Tonex as well as for the upcoming stage
play in which Tonex is starring alongside Kim Burrell, TatyanaAli, Tommy
Ford and Sunny Hawkins spring of 2007 entitled “That’s When Mama
Prayed”.
———Walter Hawkins Love Alive 1975
Enter enigma manifesto, Tonex. He’s left the Gospel Industry in a quest
for his artistic freedom. Once a slave to Corporate Music powers-that-be,
Tonex has morphed into a digital mogul of sorts. He?s more obscure than
ever, but yet we see him and hear him everywhere especially through his
ubiquitous musical outlet of choice MySpace www.myspace.com/
tonexworld. He turned MySpace into HisSpace in just a matter of months.
In 8 months he had over 600,000 plays and 20,000 friends without an
ounce of advertisement or major label help. He took iTunes and made it
sing HisTune in December 2005 when he released his exclusive digital
album Oak Park: 92105. And now a total of 30 titles that were buried and
some brand new ones appear on iTunes. www.iTunes.com
Tonex has also ventured into the world of syndicated radio as the creator
and DJ of the smash show “Club Virtue” www.clubvirtue.net now in 30
markets on FM radio nationally. Every artist you can think of is in rotation
sacred and secular. Heathen and Saint.
He then he crossed over into Television as the
host of BET J’s “Lifted” which is programmed
much like Club Virtue as a bridge between
mainstream and inspirational. Tonex just
signed on for another season. Then there’s the
Record Executive side of Tonex in which now
he is mentoring new acts to follow in his
footsteps.
Then there’s the political activist, motivational speaker and prophetic side
of Tonex under the moniker N8ioN Cyrus (www.n8ionwide.com) in
which Tonex leaves the artistic for the prolific by pushing a generation
into purposeful spirit led lifestyles. His inaugural DVD and CD
presentation entitled “Young Gifted & Black” is an ambitious yet thought
provoking charge for the black generation to stand up and finish the
course set by such greats as Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. This
DVD is a must have for any parent or grandparent concerned about the
plight of their offspring.
In closing it is obvious that the infamous
blog released on MySpace by Tonex
earlier this year was just like blowing
out a candle before the dawn. Prince
himself used to say ?”May you live to
see the dawn”. It’s looks as if Tonex
has endured the worst of the worst and
what didn’t kill him only made him
stronger. He survived and lived to see
the breaking of day.
“May You

Anointed Psalmstress, Karen Mire,
began her musical career in singing
praise and worship at “Godchaser”
Tommy Tenny’s church . Three years
later, God led her to a church where
she led praise and worship for 11
years. Her musical experience is
reflected in her debut CD entitled,
“The Fountain” which contains 14
original songs, most of which are
praise and worship. Such songs as
“No Weapon”, “Sanctified”,and “In
Him” teach the listener their identity
and authority as a Christian. And
” Made to Worship and “Praise

of praise. In “Surrender”, much like
David in the Psalms, Karen works
through her own feelings to surrender
to God’s desire for her life, a message
she believes is critical to the believer
fulfilling His plan for their life. “ Lord
You Know my Heart” , a duet
featuring her producer, William

knowing with assurance that God
knows who we are , is always with
us, and is always willing to forgive
our shortcomings. “The Fountain”

Church Folk Conference in
Atlanta, GA.
By: Tijuana Agnew
Shortly after prayer, Pastor William
Murphy read from Philippians 4:11
(King James Version).
The message simply gave and restored
hope to the worshippers. The faithful
Pastor William Murphy encouraged the
worshippers by saying,
“The best of your days are going to be
the rest of your days!”
November 10, Robin Ware of The
Ware Agency hosted a Church Folk
Conference at the Renaissance Hotel
in Atlanta, GA on November 10, 2006.
I was blessed to attend the conference
on Friday, November 10, 2006. The
featured speaker for the night was
Pastor William Murphy.
The Church Folk Conference was
definitely a success to the few that
supported. Robin Ware and the Ware
Agency staff were extremely helpful
and the message was encouraging and
inspiring to all. I pray that next year,
everyone will be able to attend.

room was filled with the presence of
God, worshippers continued to cry
unto God. Moments following, Pastor
William Murphy proceeded in an
opening prayer. The power of God was
further released into the worshippers.

At the age of 21, Vincent Robinson was
shot at a close range. The bullet
destroyed the main arteries in both of
his legs which left him an amputee. At
the time, Vincent stood 6 feet tall and
now stands a few inches less of 3 feet.
The incident left him in a coma for two
months (November 2002-January
2003). A week after he was out of the
coma, Vincent was unaware that his
legs were no longer attached to his
body. The initial shock was
unbelievable. He has God to thank for
allowing him to live through such of a
tragedy that took place thirteen years
ago.
With the help of Habitat for Humanity,
Vincent will have a home that will allow
him to have a ramp for his wheelchair
to access. There, he will raise his 3
children aged fifteen, sixteen and nine.
Vincent inspired KAM to work with
what you have and be good at it.
Vincent not only motivated and shared
his mental energy with KAM and the
Habitat for Humanity volunteers; he
also worked physically with everyone
to help build his future home.
KAM appreciated the opportunity to
work with Habitat for Humanity
because they are a Christian based
organization that is willing to assist
people with such conditions. Her prayer
is that God will continue to use her in
ways to help others through her vocal
ability and lending a helping hand.
“It’s such of a blessing to use all of what
God has given me so that I can benefit
someone else.”
Vincent and his family will move into
their new home on December 20th just
in time for the Christmas Holidays.
Landmark Defender Building
Could Become Chicago
Gospel Museum
Chicago, IL – A hand full of Chicago
Gospel enthusiasts have come up with a plan
to preserve a historical Chicago landmark
while attracting a tourist base to the area.
The Sun-Times described in vivid detail in
an article entitled “Sounding the alarm for
Chicago landmarks,” the deep concern of
Preservationists about the former Chicago
Defender headquarters. Reporter Kevin
Nance noted, “Since the Defender’s
departure in January, the building has been
vacant and subject to vandalism. Windows
have been broken out, and copper gutters
and downspouts have been removed for
salvage value.” In addition, the article
pointed out the possibility of further damage
from Chicago’s freezing winter.
With buyers evaluating the building for
purchase discouraged primarily by its
location in the Motor Row Landmark
District - along with facing difficulties with
local authorities in subjecting the facility to
any changes, the solution is seems to be
pointing to the City of Chicago. By acquiring
the building, restoring and converting it into
an International Gospel Music Museum,
Chicago stands to create the greatest
archives of the cultural impact gospel music
made in America.
Widespread misconceptions abound about
the origin of gospel music - which was, in
fact, influenced by the Negro spirituals and
Christian hymns but is an art form in itself
originating from and spread from Chicago
by Thomas A. Dorsey, the Roberta Martin
Singers, Sallie Martin, Mahalia Jackson, the
Caravans, Soul Stirrers, Norfleet Brothers,
James Cleveland and Albertina Walker. A
January 2006 fire destroyed the historic and
beautiful Pilgrim Baptist Church on South
Michigan Avenue, and much of the original
and irreplaceable Thomas Dorsey / Pilgrim
Baptist Church memorabilia.
Additional 1950’s development of Lake
Meadows, Prairie Shores, Dan Ryan
Expressway and later changes have left only
a few of the classic and significant buildings
in Bronzeville intact - the Defender building
is by far the most unique. Built in 1936 by
the Illinois auto dealers on Michigan
Avenue’s Auto Row, and serving as the 50year home of the Chicago Defender
newspaper, this building has strong cultural
and architectural appeal. It would be a fitting
tribute to this glorious music genre to
transform the former Chicago Defender
headquarters into an international tourist
attraction in the historic Bronzeville area,
since Gospel music is popular worldwide.
With an ideal location - near the Loop and
McCormick Place - acquisition of the
building by The City of Chicago would solve
the immediate problems associated with
vandalism, preserve it for future years and
add to Chicago’s diverse cultural attractions.
Persons interested in forming a committee
to study and present a proposal to the City
of Chicago to save and preserve the former
Chicago Defender Headquarters are invited

Noted Composer Still
Pressing for Gospel House
By Gretta Curtis - Christian Post
Margaret Pleasant Douroux, a gospel
music composer, hopes to establish a Los
Angeles museum and concert hall to
celebrate the music that first came out of
African-American churches. “The music
ministry is so crucial to the black church.
I’m kind of protective of it,” explains
Douroux, daughter and sister of pastors.
“I want it to be as special as I think God
would want it to be.”
Douroux, whose more than 200 songs
(“Give Me a Clean Heart,” “Trees,”
“Mercy That Suits”) landed her in the
International Gospel Music Hall of Fame,
has tried since 1983 to establish the
Gospel House but has been repeatedly
hindered, The Los Angeles Times
reported.
Her non-profit Heritage Music
Foundation’s motto is “Classical music
has Carnegie Hall. Country music has the
Grand Ole Opry. Gospel music needs a
museum and theatre: the Gospel House.”
Such a museum, Douroux told the Times,
would showcase the sound that marries
blues and jazz with traditional hymns and
spirituals as it celebrates God. After more
than two decades, Douroux continues to
press for Gospel House.
“I’m really, really hoping,” she said. “I
have to pray that God will lead me to the
right spot.”

There is nothing new
under the sun.
Like most of us I am a music lover! I
love all types of music and I must say
the last few years has real transition. But,
its nothing new it just that certain secular artists are now in a better position to
do more because many of them have
creative control and because most of the
artist making the transition sang their first
song in church. Many grew up in church
and left but the bottom line is they have
all sang in church, period.
Back in the day gospel music wasn’t the
way to go if an artist wanted to make it
big in the music business. Let’s take a
look at our history Thomas Dorsey had
a difficult time because his music style
was to worldly for the church? Help me
here... The Mighty Clouds have been
around for years and put out a few songs
that had a blues feel but it was never the
less gospel. The late great Sam Cooke
was able to do a little bit of both and
was probably one of the few artist who
could get away with it.
The late James Cleveland had the ability
to change the words to a secular song
and make it gospel and we all know that
Jesus Is The Best Thing That Ever Happen To Me was a Glayds Knight and the

of her number 1 hit. Changed the words

Distribution Continues
Quest To Be
‘The New Haven’
For Independent
Artist and Labels
Comin Atcha Distribution (CAD) set out
several years ago to level the playing field
and help provide access to product
distribution for independents. Joe
Langham, President of Comin Atcha
Distribution, also realized first hand that
it had become extremely difficult for Artists
and Labels to acquire national distribution.
Many indie labels found the door to getting
distribution closed to them and those that
were able to sneak in were not receiving
due and timely compensation from their
product sales.
In November 2005, Langham wrote an
article about the indie distribution problem
entitled “Are Indie Labels Being Robbed
by Distributors”. This article received lots
of attention and affirmation from the gospel
music community. Shortly thereafter
Langham received several invitations to
speak on the topic including one from the
Dean of Music Business at the Berklee
College of Music in Boston,
Massachusetts.
Langham believes that nothing has
changed in the year since he wrote the
article. “You wouldn’t believe the amount
of independent labels that are out there
right now looking for distribution”, he says.
“In the music industry today, the larger
distribution companies are still either
merging or making cuts. Major
distribution companies have become
more selective concerning which labels
they sign, and a lot of independent labels
are left without distribution.”
2006 was a good year for Comin Atcha
Distribution as the company increased
its roster of independent artists. CAD
distributes products by inspirational and
gospel artists such as Freda Battle & the
Temple Worshippers (produced by Israel
Houghton), Witness, Surel, Bobby Perry
& R.A.I.N, Harlem Boys & Girls Choir
among others.
Langham adds “In 2007 we are happy
to announce that CAD, the new haven
for independents, will expand its reach
into other genres. This expansion will
include Artists like Vicki Baker (Blues),
Keefe Marzell (Jazz), The Cab
Calloway Orchestra Band featuring
Billy Joel (Big Band). CAD will also
release its first Gospel Hip-Hop artist,
Mark J and first quartet artist, the
Concert Supremes.

Crockett, TX — Valerie Gipson is a new
Gospel recording artist with cause to
celebrate great things. Recently signed
to The KEL Group, a new music label,
Gipson releases her long awaited debut
recording titled, “Great Things.”
“It is wonderful to have this opportunity
to release my music,” says Gipson, “but
most importantly, I wish to emphasize
that I am, first and foremost, doing this
to honor and glorify God.”
The KEL Group has also begun
production of the video for “What A Man

retail distribution through CD Baby (

international one-stop, Super D

Kenny Love, who is president and CEO
of The KEL Group, and who is also
president of MuBiz.com, a radio
promotion and media publicity firm says,
“Valerie Gipson is a truly remarkable,
yet, humble recording artist. And, I feel
extremely fortunate to know her as a
friend, as well as experience her amazing
prolific talent firsthand. We certainly
have some amazing plans for Ms. Gipson
all through 2007,” Love adds.
Gipson also has an affiliation with
Gospel recording artist Yolanda Adams,
as both hail from the same town and
church of Conroe, Texas, which is a
suburb of Houston. Additionally, Ms
Gipson and Ms. Adams are long-time
friends.

to emphasize that I am, first and

This disc’s production was completed at
the end of 2005, however, its release was
delayed due to Gipson’s mother’s
untimely passing during this same time
frame.
