konsolidierte Bruttoumsatz des Unternehmens um 6 Prozent.
Die positive Entwicklung in den letzten Jahren führen Sie unter anderem auf erhebliche Investitionen in der Produktentwicklung zurück. Bei welchen Produkten haben sich diese
Investitionen besonders gelohnt?
Zum nachhaltigen Wachstum tragen unterschiedliche Produkte aus
allen fünf Kompetenzfeldern bei. Die Breite unseres Sortiments reflektiert
unser Ziel, den Endverbrauchern ein Lebensbegleiter zu sein. Im Mittelpunkt
unserer Produktentwicklung steht immer das Ziel, einen Mehrwert für den
Kunden bzw. einen klar erkennbaren Kundennutzen für unsere Produkte
zu erreichen. Das bestätigt insbesondere das mehrfach preisgekrönte
„GRIP“-Konzept mit den charakteristischen und ergonomischen Noppen aus
Wasserlack. Auch im Bereich hochwertiger Geschenkartikel, insbesondere
bei Schreibgeräten, erzielen wir mit unseren neuen Produktlinien erfreuliche
Zuwächse.
Graf von Faber-Castell, in the 2007/2008 fiscal year
the consolidated gross turnover of your company increased
by 6 percent. You have said that the reason for the positive
developments in recent years is the considera ble investments made in product development. For which products
have these investment been particularly worthw hile?
To achieve sustainable growth it is important that different prod
ucts from all five of our fields of competence are successful. The fact that
we aim to be a constant companion throughout the lives of our customers
is reflected in our extensive product range. The main focus of our product
development is always on achieving added value for our customers, i.e.
creating instantly recognisable customer benefit. An excellent example of
this is our award-winning “GRIP“ concept with its novel and ergonomic
knobs in water-based lacquer. We have also achieved impressive growth
with our new product lines in the high quality giftware sector, particularly
with writing instruments.

What new products are you exhibiting at
Paperworld?
The new developments from our “Playing & Learning“ field of
competence further enhance our range of products with high educational
value. These products promote the creativity of children of all ages. The
primary focus of this concept is on products which are specifically tailored to
the needs of children at different stages of their development. For instance,
the “JUMBO GRIP“ colour pencils, which are used by more school starters
in Germany than any other pencil, are now to be joined by a mechanical
version. In our “Art & Graphic“ and “Premium“ fields of competence we are
setting a new tone and extending our range of marker pens for artists and
other high-quality writing instruments.
Mit welchen Maßnahmen unterstützen Sie den
Handel?
Insbesondere das Schulgeschäft steht auch in 2009 im Fokus
unserer Maßnahmen: Zum Schulanfang startet eine Mediakampagne, die
den Mehrwert der „GRIP“-Familie in den Vordergrund stellt. Eine deutschlandweite Verkaufsförderungstour der besonderen Art wird im Sommer die
Aufmerksamkeit der Endverbraucher auf sich ziehen. Mit diesen und weiteren gezielten Maßnahmen will Faber-Castell seine von Umweltfreundlichkeit
geprägte Markenphilosophie unterstreichen.
In what way do you support retailers?
The focus of our attention in 2009 is on the school stationery sector
again. At the beginning of the school year we will be launching a media
campaign focusing on the added value of the “GRIP“ range. A special sales
promotion campaign will be touring Germany this summer to attract the
attention of consumers. With this and many other sales promotion activities,
Faber-Castell will also be promoting its eco-friendly brand image.
Wo sehen Sie Wachstumschancen auf dem
Schreibgeräte-Markt?
Faber-Castell schenkt den Megatrends Wellness und Erziehung
besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Die Parameter der Wohlstandsgesellschaft in
den hoch entwickelten Märkten lassen die demografische Alterspyramide
bis zum Jahr 2035 zu einem kopflastigen Tropfen mutieren. Im Jahr 2040
wird es doppelt so viele Rentner wie Erwerbstätige geben, und Senioren
werden sich mehr und mehr auch der kreativen Freizeitbetätigung widmen.

In what areas of the writing instrument market is
there potential for growth?
Faber-Castell is devoting special attention to the megatrends of
wellness and education. Demographic change in affluent societies and
highly developed markets will have built a top heavy age pyramid by the
year 2035. In 2040 there will be twice as many pensioners as people in
employment. Older people will be able to devote more time to creative
leisure activities. Faber-Castell is placing more emphasis on its role as a
constant companion through life. We are consistently expanding our “Hobby
& Craft“ segment which is part of the “Art & Graphic“ field of competence
and offers a range of products for hobby artists and people interested in

Welche Rolle spielt der Megatrend
„Nachhaltigkeit“ für die Schreibgeräte-Branche?
Man muss kein Visionär sein, um zu erkennen, dass die Sicherung
der Ressourcen für das Leben der kommenden Generationen von höchster
Bedeutung ist. Unsere Kernzielgruppe sind Kinder und da zählt es, eine von
Produktsicherheit und Umweltfreundlichkeit geprägte Markenphilosophie zu
vertreten. Das Holz für unsere Stifte wächst zu 80 Prozent auf FSC-zertifizierten Plantagen mit umweltgerechter Forstwirtschaft. Auch dem Thema
Biodiversität widmen wir erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit: In den firmeneigenen
Forsten in Brasilien leben immer mehr heimische vom Aussterben bedrohte
Tier- und Pflanzenarten auf naturbelassenen Arealen, die etwa 30 Prozent
der gesamten Forstfläche ausmachen. Das Unternehmen Faber-Castell gilt
zudem als Branchenpionier bei der umweltschonenden Wasserlackierung
von Blei- und Farbstiften.
What role does “sustainability“ play in the writing
instruments market?
You don‘t have to be a visionary to recognise that saving resources
is of major importance to the lives of future generations. Our products are
primarily aimed at children, so product safety and eco-friendliness are of
prime importance to our brand image. Eighty percent of the wood used in
our pencils is sourced from sustainably managed FSC (Forest Stewardship
Council) certified plantations. We also devote a lot of attention to the theme
of biodiversity. In our company-owned forests in Brazil we have left about 30
percent of the total area in its natural state and set it aside for indigenous
animals and plants that are currently threatened by extinction. Faber-Castell
has also played a pioneering role in the market with its eco-friendly waterbased lacquers for pencils and crayons.
Wie sehen Sie die Zukunft des Schreibens,
Zeichnens und kreativen Gestaltens in einer Umwelt, die
immer stärker durch digitale Medien geprägt wird?
Ich sehe zukünftig die Gewichtung weniger beim Bleistift zum
Schreiben, sondern vielmehr beim Buntstift zum Malen. Gerade Produkte für
kreatives Gestalten werden weiterhin sehr gefragt sein. Die Gehirnforschung
bestätigt, dass das kreative Betätigen mit handgehaltenen Produkten zum
Schreiben, Zeichnen und Malen von großer Bedeutung für die Entwicklung
des Kindes ist und bleiben wird. Deshalb wird es selbst bei zunehmender
Bedeutung der digitalen Medien immer noch eine Notwendigkeit bleiben,
handgehaltene Produkte, wie wir sie herstellen, zu verwenden. Sie schaffen
die Basis, um später auch einen Computer besser bedienen zu können.
Was erwarten Sie vom Jahr 2009?
Das Jahr 2009 bringt auch für unsere Branche besondere
Herausforderungen, die insbesondere mit der möglichen Abschwächung des
Konsumklimas zusammenhängen. Dies wird jedoch in den einzelnen Märkten
unterschiedliche Auswirkungen haben. Aber die Medaille hat ja immer zwei
Seiten: In schwierigen Zeiten ist es besonders wichtig, sich seiner Rolle als
Markenartikler, der Produkte mit Mehrwert vermarktet, bewusst zu sein und
nicht den einfachen Weg der Billigprodukte und Rabatte einzuschlagen. Der
Erarbeitung von zusätzlichem Kundennutzen kommt in solchen Zeiten eine
besondere Bedeutung zu. Wir gehen daher durchaus zuversichtlich in das
neue Jahr, in dem wir die Chance sehen, unsere Position in den Märkten
weiter zu stärken und unserem Fachhandel weiterhin ein starker Partner
zu sein.

In your opinion, what future does writing, drawing and being creative have in an environment which is
increasingly defined by digital media?
I believe that in the future the emphasis will be less on using
pencils for writing and more on using crayons for drawing. There will always
be a high demand for products which support people in their creativeness.
Brain research has demonstrated that creative activities with hand-held products for writing, drawing and painting are of major importance to a child‘s
development. For this reason, never mind how important digital media may
become, hand-held products such as ours will always be necessary. Without
these basic skills, people will not be able to exploit the full potential of their
computers.
What are your expectations for 2009?
2009 is going to be a big challenge for all companies in our sector,
mainly because consumption as a whole is likely to decline. However, the
impact of this will differ from market to market. However, there are two
sides to every coin: in difficult times it is important to be well aware of
one‘s role as a brand manufacturer who sells products with added value
and not to take the easy route with cheap products and discounts. In times
such as these, creating added customer benefit is of major importance. We
feel perfectly confident about what the new year will bring and see it as a
chance to consolidate our position in the market and continue to be a strong
partner to our retailers.

During the run-up to Christmas, the hustle and bustle of people looking for
Christmas presents is in full swing in the Munich pedestrian zone. Despite
the pre-Christmas rush, people keep stopping in front of Kaut-Bullinger to
admire its lavishly decorated windows. The one word which best describes
the Christmas decor in this specialty newsagent is “noble”. Genuine leather,
handmade paper and exclusive writing instruments are presented in an
unobtrusive pre-Christmas decor of silver and gold, providing a pleasant
contrast to the general run of blatant reindeer romanticism.

Trotz der Deko-Zurückhaltung herrscht im
Geschäft nicht weniger Betrieb als auf der
Straße. Die Kunden schieben sich förmlich
durch die fünf Etagen, jeder Mitarbeiter ist
umlagert von drei bis vier Kunden. Nur im Erdgeschoss wartet eine lange
Schlange geduldig vor der Faber Castell-Ecke, in der Graf von Faber-Castell
höchstpersönlich alle gekauften Erzeugnisse aus seinem Haus signiert. Ein
paar Schritte entfernt beobachtet Kaut-Bullinger-Geschäftsführer Heinz
Rückerl mit großer Zufriedenheit die Szene. „Graf von Faber-Castell setzt
sich immer sehr für den Fachhandel ein“, erklärt er. „Umso schöner, dass die
Signierstunde so gut ankommt.“
Das Erdgeschoss des ehemaligen königlich-bayerischen Hoflieferanten KautBullinger ist der richtige Ort für solch öffentlichkeitswirksame Aktionen,
schließlich ist hier der Platz für Schönheit und Stil, wie es Rückerl ausdrückt.
Marken wie Montblanc, Waterman, Filofax oder Lamy präsentieren sich in
eigenen Warenwelten, hinter Glasvitrinen verzaubert edles und hochpreisiges Schreibgerät, das Verhalten der Mitarbeiter erinnert eher an einen
Juwelier als an ein Schreibwarengeschäft. Das ist genau so beabsichtigt.
„Im Erdgeschoss sollen sich die Kunden erst einmal verzaubern lassen“,
erklärt Rückerl. „Die Lösungen für ihren Alltag finden sie dann auf den
anderen Etagen.“
Die verzauberte Atmosphäre rund um die glitzernden Montblanc-Füller ändert
sich dann auch schlagartig, sobald man die Treppe zum 1. Stock hinaufsteigt.
„Die Damenetage“, erklärt Rückerl mit einem Lächeln. Tatsächlich ist fast
die gesamte Kundschaft, die zwischen den verschiedenen Warenwelten hinund hergeht, weiblich. Am stärksten frequentiert ist die Abteilung Papeterie,
in der „Sie“ Geschenkpapiere und Glückwunschkarten für die Bescherung
sucht. Wird sie nicht fündig, ist schnell eine unaufdringliche, kompetente
Verkäuferin zur Stelle. Diese Mischung aus Selbstbedienung und Beratung
ist eines der Erfolgsrezepte von Kaut-Bullinger. Als Rückerl kurz nach seinem
Antritt als Geschäftsführer in den 80er Jahren die klassischen Ladentische
und die Mann-zu-Mann-Bedienung abschaffte, um sein Geschäft eher an
den Kaufhäusern zu orientieren, war das eine Revolution in der Branche.
Höhere Kunden- und Umsatzzahlen gaben dem unternehmerischen Mut
am Ende Recht. „Und heute orientieren sich die Kaufhäuser an uns“, sagt
er lachend. „Wir haben zwar die Ladentische abgeschafft, aber unsere
Servicekompetenz bewahrt.“
Service ist die zweite Säule des Erfolgs, mit der Rückerl auch in den
kommenden wirtschaftlich schwierigen Jahren bestehen will. So sind die
Waren aus der Warenwelt „Schule“ sicherlich nicht die billigsten, die in der
Münchner Innenstadt zu haben sind – aber wo sonst können Eltern in der
Früh die Schullisten ihrer Kinder abgeben und das von den Mitarbeitern fer-

Despite the muted decor, there is just as much bustle inside the store as out
on the street. Customers jostle their way through all five floors. Most of the
sales assistants are surrounded by three or four customers. Nevertheless,
on the ground floor a long queue is waiting patiently in the corner occupied
by Faber Castell where Count von Faber-Castell is personally signing all
purchases of his company’s products. A short distance away, Rückerl,
Managing Director of Kaut-Bullinger, is observing the scene with an air of
quiet satisfaction. As he explains: “Count von Faber-Castell always offers
great support to specialist retailers. That’s why we‘re pleased that so many
people are taking advantage of his autograph hour.“ The ground floor of
Kaut-Bullinger, which used to be a purveyor to the Court of Bavaria, is the
perfect location for effective publicity campaigns. After all, as Rückerl says,
this is the place for things of beauty and style. Brands such as Montblanc,
Waterman, Filofax and Lamy are presented here in their own product
environments, beautifully elegant, highly-priced writing instruments are
displayed in glass showcases, and the conduct of the sales assistants is
more reminiscent of a jeweller’s store than a newsagent‘s. This is inten
tional. As Rückerl explains, “our customers should feel enchanted the minute
they enter the shop. Day-to-day solutions can be found later on the other
floors.“
The enchanted atmosphere surrounding the shiny Montblanc fountain pens
changes the minute you go up the stairs to the first floor. “This is the ladies’
floor,” says Rückerl with a smile. Indeed, almost all the customers moving
to and fro between the various products are women. The most popular area
is the Stationery Department where you can choose from a selection of
Christmas gift wraps and cards. Discreet sales assistants are immediately
on hand to provide assistance when needed. This combination of self service and customer assistance is one of the pillars on which the success of
Kaut-Bullinger is built. Shortly after Rückerl became Managing Director in
the nineteen-eighties, he did away with traditional shop counters and oneto-one service in order to make his shop more like a department store; a
revolution in the trade at the time. His courageous business spirit was ultim
ately proved right by more customers and a larger turnover. “Nowadays,
the department stores are looking to us,” says Rückerl with a smile. “We
did away with the shop counters, but our competent customer service has
remained the same.”
Customer service is the second pillar on which Rückerl intends to build his
success despite the difficult economic situation predicted for the next few
years. The products in the School Stationery Department may not be the
cheapest in the centre of Munich, but where else can parents leave their
children’s school lists in the morning and pick up the high-quality items in
the evening after work. As far as service is concerned, Rückerl always tries

„Bei dem Treffen berichteten mehrere Etagenleiter von Kundenanfragen
nach Arbeiten wie binden, laminieren, ausdrucken, Faxe verschicken und
so weiter“, erzählt der Geschäftsführer. „Offenbar waren wir da auf eine
Marktlücke gestoßen – in der Münchner Innenstadt gibt es nämlich keinen
Copy-Shop.“ Das aufmerksame Hinhören hat sich gelohnt, der ServiceBereich im 1. Untergeschoss wird stark frequentiert.

concept was developed at one of the floor managers’ weekly meetings
- a special service department for commissioned work. “At the meeting,
several floor managers reported that they had repeatedly received customer
enquiries for work such as binding, laminating, printing, faxing, and the like.
We had apparently discovered a new niche in the market. In Munich’s city
centre there are no copyshops offering such services.“ Many customers
are now taking advantage of the Service Department on the 1st basement
level, which proves that listening attentively to customers’ wishes can pay
off in the end.
Die dritte konzeptionelle Entscheidung von Kaut-Bullinger wiederum ist
an keine Etage oder Warenwelt gebunden. „Wir wollen unseren Kunden
Erlebniskauf bieten, hier sollen sie die schönere Alternative finden“, erklärt
Rückerl. „Geiz ist geil ist nicht unser Ding.“ Stattdessen präsentiert sich
jede Warenwelt mit ansprechend dekorierten Produkttischen, mit ungewöhnlichen Lösungen und neuen Ideen, die den Kunden anregen sollen.
Dazu gehört eine Aufteilung des Sortiments nach Kundenwünschen, nicht
nach Produktgruppen. „Wir setzen bewusst auf Doppelplatzierung“, so
Rückerl. „Wenn eine Kundin ein Geschenk einpacken will, braucht sie dazu

is devoting a great deal of time to a young man who, in the midst of all the
Christmas bustle, is looking for a particular type of pastel chalk. After a
quarter of an hour’s assistance, the customer selects a box of Faber-Castell
pastels which he takes to the ground floor to have signed by a real Count.

Engagement im Pariser Lido, das sechs Jahre dauerte, eine der längsten
Attraktionen in seiner Geschichte. Mehr als 2,5 Millionen Besucher haben
den finnischen Meistermagier seither dort bewundert.
Marko Karvo ist bis 21. Februar 2009 im Tigerpalast zu
sehen.
His great ambition was to perform at the world-famous Lido in Paris.

“Speak, so that I might see you.“ These words were once spoken by
the Greek philosopher Plato in broad daylight. Participants of “Dialogue in
the Dark“ will immediately understand this somewhat puzzling request.
In a pitch-black world of darkness in 6 different rooms covering
an area of 500 square metres, only those who speak are visible. Neglected
senses return to life. Information you might otherwise have ignored will
fire your imagination. This will cause a change in perspective and add fresh
impetus to team processes. Anyone wanting more surprises can put their
senses to the test in the “Taste of Darkness“ - a restaurant in the dark - or
in the brightly lit “Casino for Communication“.
