trends – Paperworld is the paper, stationery and office supplies sector’s most international
trade fair, a vibrant community that brings together everyone involved in the industry. We
spoke to Michael Reichold, director Paperworld.
Welche besonderen Highlights bietet die Paperworld 2011 ihren
Besuchern?
Eines meiner persönlichen Highlights ist die Paperworld Trendschau in der Halle 6.1. Dort präsentieren die Experten des Stilbüros bora.
herke die Trends der kommenden Saison. Die Trendschau liefert Anregungen für die Sortimentszusammensetzung und bietet einen Zusatznutzen für
die Ladenpräsentation und Schaufenstergestaltung. „Boldy Fusion“,
„Serene Simplicity“ und „Charming Souvenir“ heißen die drei Trendwelten,
die dort mit Produkten der Aussteller in Szene gesetzt werden. Täglich um
10:30 und 15 Uhr erklären die Experten in einem Vortrag die Wirkung und
Umsetzung der Trends und führen durch die Sonderschau.
What highlights does Paperworld 2011 have in store for visitors?
One of my favourite highlights is the Paperworld trend show in
Hall 6.1. Designers from the bora.herke style agency are showcasing next
season’s trends. From this trend show visitors will be able to draw inspiration
for their product ranges, in-store presentations and shop window designs.
The three trend worlds have been aptly named “Boldy Fusion”, “Serene
Simplicity” and “Charming Souvenir”. These trend displays all feature the
latest products of Paperworld exhibitors. Lectures are held every day at
10.30 am and 3.00 pm to explain the impact of these trends and how they
can be incorporated into retail formats. There will also be guided tours of
the show.
Welche Schwerpunkte setzen Sie in diesem Jahr bei den
Sonderschauen?
Die Sonderschauen sind ebenso abwechslungsreich und vielseitig
wie die Produktvielfalt, die auf der Paperworld zu finden ist. Ich möchte
aber insbesondere auf die Sonderschau „Pimp your Shop“ hinweisen. Dort
geht es um Zusatzsortimente und themenspezifische Präsentationsmöglichkeiten für den Buchhandel. Acht Thementische zeigen interessante
Produkte aus dem Nonbook-Bereich zusammen mit den passenden
Büchern. Gaby Marx, Expertin für Sortimentsstrategie, referiert täglich um
11.30 und 14 Uhr zum Thema Emotionen wecken – Zusatzumsatz erzielen.
What is the main focus of your special shows this year?
The special shows are as interesting and varied as the range of
products on show at Paperworld. I’d particularly like to mention the “Pimp
your Shop” special show. This show is geared towards the bookshop sector and focuses on non-book merchandise and theme-based presentation
opportunities. Interesting non-book merchandise is showcased, together
with the matching books, on eight themed tables. Every day at 11.30 am
and 2.00 pm Gaby Marx, a product range strategy expert, will be talking
about provoking emotions and generating additional turnover.
Auf welche Resonanz stoßen bisher die Remax@Paperworld und
die Creativeworld?
Sowohl die Remax@Paperworld als auch die Creativeworld stoßen auf äußerst positive Resonanz. Die Remax, Europas größte Fachmesse
für die Wiederaufbereitung von Druckerzubehör, hat bereits 2010 hier in
der Halle 4.0 Premiere gefeiert und wurde sowohl von Ausstellern als auch
Besuchern sehr gut angenommen. Die Aussteller der Creativeworld freuen
sich über eine internationale Plattform und die erste eigenständige
Kreativ-Messe weltweit, die in der Halle 4.2 ihre Heimat gefunden hat.
Die Veranstaltung ist voll ausgebucht und alle Marktführer mit dabei.
What has been the response to Remax@Paperworld and
Creativeworld so far?
Both Remax@Paperworld and Creativeworld have met with a
highly positive response. Remax, is the largest trade fair in Europe to focus
on the recyling of printer materials and accessories. It took place for the
first time in 2010 in Hall 4.0 and was well received by both exhibitors and
visitors. Creativeworld exhibitors are pleased to have an international platform and to have the opportunity to attend the first independent “creative”
trade fair in the world – which now takes place in Hall 4.2. The event is
fully booked and all the top brands are attending.

Industriedesign. Modernität wird mit Klassik kombiniert. Dekorative
Elemente sind zurückgenommen und machen einer reduzierten und einfachen Linienführung Platz. „Viele Designer besinnen sich auf ihre Anfänge,
entwerfen mit eigenen Produkten eine neue Klassik und inszenieren Retroschauen“, sagt Claudia Herke. Nicht die futuristische Neuerfindung steht
bei diesem Trend im Vordergrund, sondern die Neudefinition der Klassik.
Clear, harmonious, perfect
The desire for durability and quality is what characterises this trend. Its
high-end design lies at the heart of this classic trend: A strong focus on the
essentials and on graphic structures accentuate this chic industrial design.
Modernity combined with classic values. Decorative elements give way to
clean, simple lines. “Many designers are echoing their early work, discovering a new form of classicism in their own products and staging retro
shows,” says Claudia Herke. They are focusing on redefining classicism
rather than on reinventing the future.

„Charming Souvenir“
Die Unbeschwertheit der 50er Jahre beschwingt diesen frischen Stil.
Liebliche Retro-Impulse werden modern umgesetzt und sorgen für eine
feminine Note und Leichtigkeit. Abstrakte und geometrische Muster
setzen Akzente in dieser pastellig-luftigen Trendwelt. „Die Rückbesinnung
ist auch hier zu finden, nur in einer anderen Form. Nicht Retro, sondern die
aktuelle Interpretation von Farben und Mustern steht im Mittelpunkt“,
erklärt Claudia Herke. Der Schick der 50er Jahre ist im 21. Jahrhundert
angekommen und entwickelt eine neue Form von frischer Moderne.

Carefree, refreshing, charming
The light-heartedness of the 1950s adds zest to this refreshing style.
Charming retro-style is undergoing a revival, adding impetus, a feminine
touch and a feeling of light-heartedness. Abstract and geometric patterns
set the tone in this breezy, pastel-coloured world. “Here too, designers are
returning to past values, only in a different way. They are focusing less on
retro and more on a contemporary interpretation of colours and patterns,”
Claudia Herke explains. Fifties chic has arrived in the 21st century, bringing
with it a new and refreshing form of modernism.

„Boldly Fusion“
Hier harmoniert, was scheinbar nicht miteinander zu verbinden ist.
Kulturelle Einflüsse treffen aufeinander und werden vorbehaltlos kombiniert. Expressive Muster, prägnante Farben, abgenutzte Oberflächen und
glänzende Materialien finden zu einer friedlichen und harmonischen
Koexistenz. „Individualität ist bei diesem Trend ganz wichtig. Was gefällt,
gefällt und gerade der Mix aus Moderne und ethnischen Einflüssen gibt das
i-Tüpfelchen“, beschreibt Claudia Herke. Frische Kombinationen und junger
Eigensinn geben diesem expressiven Trend seine Einmaligkeit.

Where cultural influences encounter one another and promptly team up.
Expressive patterns, striking colours, worn surfaces and lustrous materials
uniting in a peaceful and harmonious co-existence. “Individuality is very
important for this trend. If you like it, you like it, and the mix of modern
and ethnic influences is really the icing on the cake,” says Claudia Herke.

working on the image relaunch of its premium brand. This involved market
research with consumers in six of the main European markets. At Paperworld international trade visitors will be re-acquainted with the attributes
of the world’s bestselling premium office paper brand, which is already

strategy: Soporcel emphasizes that “Navigator” delivers unmatched
performance in all office equipment and displays excellent printing
quality in laser and inkjet printers, especially with intensive colour usage.
Its superb thickness and opacity make it ideal for double-sided printing; its
unique smoothness reduces toner consumption, improves printing quality
and increases printer lifespan. Furthermore, independent testing laboratory
Buyers Laboratory Inc. has proven that it eliminates paper jams. These are

Not simply high-end, ecological as well

management. Navigator papers are made from Eucalyptus globulus,

allows for a more rational usage of raw materials and a lower consumption

Im Mettmann Warenhaus im idyllischen Neersen bei Krefeld ist der Herbst
ausgebrochen. Der kleine Deko- und PBS-Laden hat sich in Gold-, Braunund Rottöne gekleidet, Deko-Blätter und Wachstrauben zieren die Warenpräsentation. Die Warenauslage im „MeWa“ wird regelmäßig der Jahreszeit oder saisonalen Höhepunkten angepasst – zumindest die eine Hälfte
des Ladens. Die andere gehört den Schreibwaren und die sind tagein, tagaus säuberlich in Reih und Glied geordnet, Bleistifte neben Buntstiften,
Briefpapier neben Druckerpapier.
The Mettmann store, located in the idyllic town of Neersen near Krefeld
has exploded into autumn. The small shop, which sells decoration articles
and paper, stationery and office supplies, is dressed in shades of gold,
brown and red, with autumn leaves and wax grapes adorning the products
on display. The displays of goods in the “MeWa“ are regularly arranged to
fit the season or to mark seasonal highlights - taking up at least half of the
shop. The other half is for stationery, the items always being precisely
ordered, pencils next to crayons, writing paper side-by-side with printer
paper.
Für Gaby Marx, ihres Zeichens Beraterin für Sortimentsstrategie, sind solche Beispiele keine Seltenheit. Obwohl das „MeWa“ in Sachen Deko vieles
richtig macht, verschenkt es auch einiges Potenzial. Nicht nur Deko- und
Geschenkartikel müssen ihrer Meinung nach inszeniert werden, auch PBSWare ist ein geeignetes Objekt für Kreativität im Laden.
„Mit PBS sind normalerweise Zielkäufe verbunden“, konstatiert Marx. „Das
stellt für die Inszenierung ein Problem dar – aber Teilbereiche, beispielsweise hochwertige Papeterie, lassen sich durchaus auch emotional in
Szene setzen.“ Die Expertin schlägt dafür Thementische vor, auf denen
Produkte von verschiedenen Herstellern auffällig im Laden platziert werden. Bei der Wahl der Themen müssen Händler nicht nur auf saisonale
Anlässe zurückgreifen, sondern dürfen auch selbst kreativ werden.
So könnten beispielsweise unter dem Thema „Meer“ verschiedene Produkte in Blau- und Grün-Tönen zusammengestellt werden – dazu ein paar
Deko-Elemente im Marine-Stil und fertig ist ein attraktiver Thementisch.
„Das Ziel ist, über Emotionen Impulskäufe auszulösen“, erklärt Marx.
„Die für die PBS-Branche typischen Zielkäufe wandern immer mehr ins
Internet ab; zudem können sich kleinere Händler gegenüber großen
Filialisten kaum über den Preis abgrenzen. Stattdessen können sie bei den
Kunden mit Emotionen punkten.“ Das Geschäft mit den Emotionen hat ganz

steigern – in einer Branche, die insgesamt mit einem Umsatzverlust von 2
Prozent zu kämpfen hat.
Wenn PBS-Shops sich an einer kreativen Warenauslage versuchen wollen,
gilt allerdings Regel Nummer eins der Shop-Dekoration: Abwechslung ist Pflicht. „Nach dem Pareto-Prinzip für den stationären Handel
macht ein Laden mit etwa 20 Prozent seiner Kunden rund 80 Prozent des
Umsatzes“, erklärt Marx. „Und diese Stammkunden betreten den Laden
ungefähr alle 14 Tage. Da ist es wichtig, diese enorm wichtigen Kunden
nicht mit der immer gleichen Deko zu langweilen.“ Deshalb heißt es für den
Thementisch: Alle 14 Tage muss ein neues Motiv gefunden werden.
Ein nicht zu unterschätzender Aufwand. Etwa 2 Stunden braucht ein

Gaby Marx, product assortment consultant, is often confronted with stores
of this kind. Although the “MeWa“ does a lot of things right as far as decoration is concerned, it also throws away some potential opportunities. Her
opinion is that not only decoration and gift items need to be set in scene,
but paper, stationery and office supplies as well, as they too can be the
subject of creative store displays.
“As a general rule, purchases of paper, stationery and office supplies are
target-oriented“, Marx points out. “That poses a problem when trying to
showcase them – but some items in the range, for example high-quality
paper products, can be set in scene well.“ The expert suggests using
theme tables, on which products made by various manufacturers are
conspicuously placed in the store. When choosing the themes, dealers
should not resort to seasonal events alone, but should display their own
creativity.
For example, the “ocean“ theme could encompass various combinations of
products in shades of blue and green, set off by a couple of marine-style
decoration elements, the result being an attractive theme table. “The aim
is to trigger impulse buying by awakening emotions,“ Marx explains.
“The target-oriented purchases which are typical for the paper, stationery
and office supplies sector are gradually migrating to the internet and, in
addition, smaller dealers can hardly set themselves apart from the large
retailing outlets on the basis of price. Instead, they can win customer
points with emotions. “Trading with emotions has very pragmatic results:
customers in the book sector who adhered to the decoration hints put forward by Gaby Marx were able to increase their turnover by an average of
5 percent - in a sector which is struggling with overall losses of 2 percent.
If dealers in the paper, stationery and office supplies sector want to
attempt creative product presentation, the number one rule for shop
decoration is variety. “According to the Pareto principal for the storebased retail sector, a store does 80 percent of its turnover with about
20 percent of its customers“, explains Marx, “and these regular customers
enter the store approximately once every two weeks. It is very important
that these significant customers are not bored by seeing the same decorations every time.“ Therefore, the rule for the theme table is: Find a new
theme every two weeks.

Präsentationen auf zu vielen Thementischen verwirren nämlich den altbekannten Zielkäufer, der beispielsweise lediglich einen Bleistift in Stärke 2B
kaufen will und nicht weiß, ob er diesen im Themenbereich „Meer“,
„Herbst“ oder „Bauhaus“ suchen soll. Deshalb rät Gaby Marx zu einem
gesunden Mix. „Klassische Warengruppen an der Ladenwand sollten
sich alle zwei, drei Meter mit einem hübsch inszenierten Thema abwechseln.“ Dann ist Verstand und Gefühl gleichermaßen Genüge getan.
Don’t underestimate the work involved: it takes about two hours for an
employee to showcase the goods, using only simple means. If the presentation is to be more elaborate, it may well be worth taking advantage of
the services of a freelance decorator. In this case, the shop team prepares
the products and the theme; the decorator provides the decoration material
and creates the show.
Successfully emotionalised impulse buyers are a joy for every dealer, however, the joy of creation shouldn’t get out of hand. Cluttered presentations
and too many theme tables will confuse the familiar target-oriented customer
who only wants to buy a 2B pencil, for example, and doesn’t know whether
to search for this item under the theme “ocean“, “autumn“, or “Bauhaus“.
Therefore, Gaby Marx suggests a healthy mix. “Classical product
groups on the walls of the store should alternate every two or three
metres with an attractively decorated theme.“ This ensures that both
the mind and senses are equally simulated.

Manfred Pulst, Vorsitzender des Verbands Hobby-Kreativ e.V. über die Creativeworld,
aktuelle Bastel-Trends und die europäische Kreativität.
Manfred Pulst, Director of the Association Hobby-Kreativ e.V. spoke to us about
Creativeworld, current handicraft trends and creativity in Europe.
Herr Pulst, die Kreativbranche bekommt 2011 im Rahmen
der Paperworld ihren eigenen Messebereich. Was erwarten Sie sich von der Creativeworld?
Die Eigenständigkeit der Veranstaltung wird die Messe weiter
zum führenden Event für die Kreativbranche in Deutschland, Europa und
weltweit machen. Kontinuierlich hat die Messe an Profil gewonnen und sie
wird auch in 2011 die wichtigste Anlaufstelle für die Branche sein. Bei
mehr als 200 Ausstellern in Halle 4.2 zeigt sie, wie lebendig die Kreativbranche ist. Ich erwarte von der Creativeworld, dass noch mehr inländische und internationale Besucher kommen und sich an dieser wichtigen
Plattform orientieren.
Mr. Pulst, in 2011 the creative sector will have its own
area at Paperworld. What are your expectations of
Creativeworld?
The fact that the event is independent will further advance the Fair,
so that it will become the leader for the creative sector in Germany, Europe
and across the world. The Fair has continually expanded its profile and, in
2011, it will again be the most important meeting place for this sector. There
will be more than 200 exhibitors in Hall 4.2, which shows how active the
creative sector has become. I expect that now even more visitors will come
to Creativeworld, both from Germany and from overseas, to be inspired by
this most important platform.
Warum hat die Kreativbranche ein eigenes MesseSchaufenster verdient?
Die Absatzmittler für kreatives Gestalten haben sich aus einer in
der Vergangenheit engen Eigenbranche zu einer breiten Absatzschiene
gewandelt. Neue Vertriebsformen haben sich aufgetan. TV-Shopping oder
Online-Vertrieb sind auch aus unserer Branche nicht mehr wegzudenken.
Facheinzelhandel, Fachmärkte und Versandhandel haben alle eine hohe
Bedeutung. Die historische Affinität zur PBS-Branche hat sich gewandelt.
Why has the creative sector earned its own display window at the Fair?
The marketing agents for creative design have emerged from what
used to be a narrow sector of its own and has now developed into a broad
marketing system. New sales opportunities have arisen, and TV shopping
and online marketing have now become an intrinsic part of our line of trade.
Specialty retailers, specialist stores and mail-order business are all very
important. The traditional affinity with the paper, stationery and office
supplies sector has been transformed.
Welche aktuellen Trends in Sachen Kreativität werden uns
in Frankfurt begegnen?
Kreatives Gestalten hat heute einen viel höheren Stellenwert als
gestern. Selbst gemachte individuelle Unikate erhöhen das persönliche
Selbstwertgefühl, nicht nur zu Feiern, Festen und anderen saisonalen
Höhepunkten. Zu den größten Trends gehören Schmuck aus unterschiedlichen Materialien, Kartengestaltung und die Malerei. Längst vorbei sind
dagegen Boomzeiten bei Window Color.
What are the current creative trends that will be exhibited
in Frankfurt?
Today, creative design plays a far more important role than it did in
the past. Individual, hand-made, unique pieces increase personal selfesteem, not only at parties, celebrations and other seasonal highlights.
Some of the most important trends are jewellery created from various
materials, card design and painting, whereas the boom times of window
colour, for example, are long gone.

Wie international ist das Thema Kreativität? Wie sehen die
Trends in anderen Ländern aus?
Die Ursprungsmärkte im Allgemeinen sind die deutschsprechenden Länder und die Nachbarn im Westen und im Norden, die typischen
Materialien waren hier Holz und Papier. In den Niederlanden, aber auch in
anderen europäischen Ländern war die kreative Handarbeit, also der

und Glas waren Favoriten. Großbritannien kam recht spät als Kreativland
hinzu. Im Zuge eines vereinten Europas wurden Ideen und Trends über die
Grenzen der Länder hinausgetragen. Bis auf wenige Ausnahmen haben sich
die Märkte seither stark angenähert. Ganz sicher werden in Mitteleuropa
mehr als 75 Prozent des Umsatzes generiert. Aber auch Osteuropa entwickelt sich dank steigender Kaufkraft mittelfristig gut.

this so?
In our highly technical society, people need food for the soul;
discovering self-fulfilment and pride
at having made something oneself.
People who have hobbies live a more
healthy and balanced life. As I see it, this is not a question of fashion, but a
matter of necessity. Furthermore, all the materials are easily affordable,
despite the economic crisis.
How international is the creativity theme? What are the
trends in other countries?
Generally speaking, the original markets were the Germanspeaking countries and their neighbours to the west and to the north, the
typical materials here being wood and paper. In the Netherlands and also
in other European countries, creative handicraft using textiles was very
widespread. In the south of Europe, people concentrated more on outdoor
hobbies; the materials of choice were cool to the touch, like stone, marble
and glass. Great Britain was a latecomer to the creative scene. In the
course of a united Europe, ideas and trends have been carried across
national borders and the markets have become very similar, with only a
few exceptions. It is a fact that more than 75 percent of the turnover is
generated in Central Europe, but Eastern Europe is now developing due to
its increasing buying power.
