“Best endowed and most modern caravan and camping
park ever visited”
Reviewed 16/9/14
You've got a code for: the gate and the bathroom door. And a map! Plus
excellent Wi-Fi. Absolute cleanliness and great facilities and friendly
personnel at the Pickaquoy Centre nearby. What more is there to wish
for?

“Great campsite”
Reviewed 2 weeks ago
We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed every second. The location is
great - next to a public swimming pool, a tesco, a garage and 5 mins
walk into Kirkwall. Everything is spotless. There are individual showers
and toilets; a kitchen; a laundry room and a space to sit, read or play
cards. The wardens are available during the day. We loved it here and
would love to come back.
Room Tip: Better to arrive during the day when the wardens are around.

“Top facilities and friendly helpful staff”
Reviewed 13 July 2014
I literally can't say anything against this site, perhaps a bit pricier than
others on the island but you get what you pay for with cream on top.
Wardens were lovely and helpful and the facilities clean and better than
anything I've ever seen before. Totally recommended.

“Will be back!”
Reviewed 12 July 2014
Stayed at the site four weeks...excellent facilities...all very well
maintained and clean.. Kirkwall just a pleasant stroll beside the Peerie
Sea away, Tesco and fuel very convenient also. The Pickaquoy Centre
is right next door...Gym, Cinema and much more. We had a fantastic
and much needed pedicure and massage from the lovely Lindsay.

The outstanding feature of the site is the Staff...in particular Sam and
Rob...but all can't do enough to help, all most pleasant and
knowledgable...made me feel welcome and very much at home.
Pickaquoy was perfect for my purposes!
Can't wait to be back :) Thanks guys...see you next year!

“Excellent stop to recharge”
Reviewed 4 July 2014
We stayed here for several one-night stops during a two week
motorhome tour of Orkney. We did a fair bit of island hopping and wild
camping, and this was a great place to recharge the motorhome, do the
washing and have a long hot shower. Tesco is just up the road, and all
the sights of Kirkwall, including the Cathedral, the museum and cafes
are as well.
It's not cheap, and booking is essential, but the showers are included!
Surprisingly quiet considering it's on the main road and next to the sports
centre. We'd certainly stay here again.

“Nice campsite”
Reviewed 27 June 2014
The site is very close to the centre of Kirkwall. The facilities were nice
and clean, plenty of cubicles, a kitchen area for cooking as well as a
laundry room and communal space with wifi. The warden was also very
friendly. The campsite is nicely laid out and also quiet, a decent base to
discover Orkney.

“Excellent base for Orkney exploring.”
Reviewed 25 June 2014
We went to Orkney for an 8 day caravan holiday. We chose this site for
our base and we were well impressed with the facilities. Large individual
wet room shower rooms with loo, washbasin and seating. Excellent
lounge for those camping and wishing to socialise, also kitchen area,
well equipped, and washing machines also. We would use this site again,
although the closeness of local traffic detracted slightly from everything
else.

“Top Spot”
Reviewed 29 May 2014
Have been a camper for over fifty years and this has to be one of the
very best sites I have visited.
Earlier visits were with a tent but now come up here with a camper van.
The showers are full wetroom style with toilets and washbasins all with
plenty of hot water. They are kept clean throughout the day not just now
and then. The staff, both Management and Wardens are so helpful and
courtious nothing is too much trouble. Stayed here over the years since
the facility block was a portakabin and it gets better every year. When
the wardens are not on site the main reception at the centre (just over
the fence) are just as helpful.
The site is maintained to a very high standard. Been to other sites on the
Island over past years but this is definately the best.
There is a really smart lounge with a kitchen and washing room with
large washers and driers. £2 a wash and £1 for half hour driers. these
areas are also spotless.
The centre next door has sports facilities including swimming pools,
small bar and cafe with the best coffee in Kirkwall. On a wet or dismal
day you can even visit their cinema, not many campsites can boast
that!!!
The prices at the cinema, pool etc are so much cheaper than back
home, two adults get in for what it would cost one in York.
Would not hesitate to reccomend this site to anyone because I cannot
fault the whole experience.

“3 nights camping”
Reviewed 23 April 2014
Stayed here for Easter weekend. Great caravan site. The warden hours
aren't great but the reception at the sports centre were very helpful and
arranged our pitch. When the warden was around he was really helpful
and friendly. Very secure.
Great facilities, hot showers, use of lounge and kitchen area. Quiet
camping site considering it's only a 5 minute walk to the centre of
Kirkwall and quite sheltered.
We only intended to stay 1 night but stayed for 3. Perfect as a hub for
exploring mainland Orkney.

“Fantastic facilities for tents and caravans”
Reviewed 6 October 2013 via mobile
Stayed for two weeks throughout the St Magnus International Festival.
Facilities absolutely fantastic and appreciated the provision of on site
attendants. Charges very reasonable and site within easy reach of
Kirkwall shops and attractions.

“Centrally located, well run.”

The amenities block has excellent facilities and is well looked after. The
grounds are cared for and well laid out. Very handy with the leisure
centre and supermarkets. A busy site so would advise pre booking.

“Moderne Ausstattung, gute Lage”
Reviewed 2 weeks ago
Sehr empfehlenswert!

“Modern facilities, good location”
Reviewed 2 weeks ago
The Pickaquoy campsite has only been around for a few years, so the
facilities are very new, modern and well thought out. A barrier prevents
access, and when the office is closed you can check in at the leisure
centre. We (couple, age 30) stayed with a 2-person tent and car in
August 2014.
There are plenty of pitches for motorhomes (around 20 tarmac and lots
more on grass). Three areas are specifically designated for tents.
The washroom facilities are top notch and are cleaned several times a
day. There are shower cubicles and WC cubicles with plenty of space
and shelves for your things. Use of showers is included in the price.
Hairdryer costs 20 pence for 3 (?) minutes.
The “common room” was very pleasant in that it is somewhere to sit if
you are camping in a tent and the weather is bad. Internet is available,
and if you are not pitched too far away from the facility building you can
get a connection in the tent.
Next to the common room is a spacious kitchen with kettle, toaster and
freezer, and six washing-up sinks. Cooking is not permitted.
There are also 2 washing machines and 2 tumble dryers, which are huge
and enable you to do plenty of washing in one go. Plug sockets are few
and far between, so I would advise having your own multi-socket
adaptor for charging your devices.
On the location:
Located on the outskirts of Kirkwall, you have a good base for all
destinations on the island. Buses stop nearby, and it is five minutes’
walk into the town centre. Three minutes away are a Tesco, a Co-op and
a Lidl.
In August, the weather in Scotland is unfortunately quite miserable. It
rained frequently and a strong wind blows on Orkney. An Aldi tent next
to us didn’t survive that.
Market:
Lots of motorhomes, some family tents, lots of cyclists, most of whom
were only there for a day but appreciated the comforts.
Highly recommended!
