Upcoming Plans For
OPH Rose Garden
Now that winter has officially set in, Citywide staff are
rolling up their sleeves and preparing for the pruning
season. As in previous years, a vigorous pruning program
is scheduled to begin July.
A dynamically tailored fertiliser will give the roses much
needed nutrients to set them on their way for the
forthcoming flowering season.
Following the pruning, an integrated mulching program
will begin in August. The mulch will see the roses through
the last of the cold weather and prepare them for the
upcoming spring season.
Training For NCA
Volunteers
Next month training will commence for all volunteer rose
gardeners. Volunteers will be shown tips and tricks of
the industry and be given the tools to ensure that, come
springtime, the gardens will look incredible.
Rose pruning training for the first group of volunteers
will be on Tuesday, July 3 at the
Horticultural Volunteers Cottage
from 10am to 12pm.
The second group of volunteers will
be on the following Tuesday, July 10
from 10am to 12pm.

Winter Gardening Tips
Roses are not fussy plants, in
fact they can be as tough as
old boots! However they must
be pruned each year in winter
to maintain vigorous growth
and to keep them flowering
well.
Now that the cooler weather
is here, gardens don’t loose as
much water to evaporation as
they do in summer. Because of
this, soils can easily waterlog if over watered, particularly in well shaded areas.
Old Parliament House to Host
“A Taste of Two Regions”.
On Sunday, 1st July, Old Parliament House will host a wine
tasting that brings together two popular wine growing
regions – Rutherglen and King Valley.
“A Taste of Two Regions” will give patrons the chance to
sample over 100 wines from two of Canberra’s closest wine
growing regions.
Some of the wines on sample include Australia’s greatest
wines from Rutherglen Muscats and Topaques to
Sangiovese and many more.
Entry is only $25 per person which includes a multitude of
produce sampling and wine tastings, enough to satisfy the
most ardent wine connoisseur.

Gallica Rose
Possibly the first cultivated Rose, the Rose Gallica is steeped
in History.

1. Time at Citywide: Two years
The Gallica Rose was stolen by the Romans and taken to
France where the enterprising French used it to make one of
the first French perfumes.
One of the most famous uses of this unassuming rose was
when it became the catalyst in the famous war of roses. The
Gallica Rose, otherwise known as the Red Rose of Lancaster,
was Henry VII’s answer to the White York Rose, a challenge in
an age when signs and symbols spoke louder than words.

Now native to Eastern Europe, the rose originally grew wild
throughout Central Asia and was first discovered by ancient
Persians and Egyptians.
After Henry married Elizabeth of York and united the land in
peace and harmony, the rose became King Henry’s symbol
of unity through one of the most successful PR stunts of all
time. He did this by combining the Red Rose of Lancaster
with the White Rose of York which thereby became the Tudor
Rose, a symbol of a united land.

From the nineteenth century onwards the rose was worn by
British 55th division during their campaign in Belgium. Their
motto was the very merry phrase “they win or they die, who
wear the Rose of Lancaster”.

Also appreciated for its medicinal value, there are countless
tales of the rose being used in renaissance courts as a way to

So there you have it, from perfume to medicine, throughout
wars and across lands and seas, varieties of the Gallica Rose
have made it to the Canberra Rose Gardens to be appreciated by Australian locals and international tourists alike.
