The stoplight in Florida City on U.S. 1 offers three options. Turn left and you’re off to Biscayne National Park. Turn right and you’re just minutes from Everglades National Park. Go straight and you’re off to the Overseas Highway, the one and only driving route to the Florida Keys–laid-back, sun-drenched and easygoing. Expect the curious, the unexpected, the odd and more than a little whimsy. With few exceptions, driving down through the Keys means forgetting street numbers and acquainting yourself with Mile Markers. Abbreviated MM, these are the signposts that mark your progress through the Keys. Expect the curious, the unexpected, the odd and more than a little whimsy. Begin your exploration with deep breaths of sea air. Attune yourself to the hum of the electric wires overhead. Crank up the Jimmy Buffett and put down the top–or at the very least roll down the windows. Curiosities begin with the wildlife crossing sign at MM113. Even if you’ve traveled the length and breadth of the nation and marveled at “Buffalo Crossing” and “Moose Crossing” and even “Panther Crossing” and “Alligator Crossing” signs, this is the only place in the U.S. where you’ll see a genuine “Crocodile Crossing” sign. Now you know you’re on the road to adventure! MM106 brings you to Key Largo. Here you’ll find the entrance to Florida’s fascinating John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park at MM105. This park, along with the adjacent Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, includes 190 square miles of coral reefs, mangrove swamps and seagrass beds. With 55 kinds of coral, the parks offer plenty of places to hide for the more than 600 species of fish. Snorkeling and diving are always on the agenda here, and you are certain to interact with a variety of wildlife. This will prepare you for the biggest piece of fine art in the Keys—a painting of graceful rays covering a building at the 99.2MM. You’ll find the resort at MM48. Here you’ll relax in a one- or two-bedroom condo with a kitchen and cozy living room. Take a swim or soak in the hot tub and then salute the sunset with a frosty libation at Barnacle Barney’s Tiki Bar. Be on the dock when the charter boats come in and after admiring the catch, make arrangements for your own fishing trip. Bluegreen owners who have their own boats can use Points to reserve a dock slip (subject to availability) with a corresponding reservation at The Hammocks at Marathon. Visit www.bluegreenonline.com for details. When you’re ready to explore the rest of the Keys, head over the fantastic Seven-Mile Bridge. On the far side of the bridge, the beautiful Bahia Honda State Park beckons. This is one of the prettiest beaches in the Keys–and it’s often listed Salute the sunset with a frosty libation at Barnacle Barney’s Tiki Bar. among the best beaches in the country. Rare plants are part of the attraction here. At MM30, reduce your speed and keep your eye out for the tiny key deer. There are about 300 of the knee-high deer in this protected habitat. And then, there you are, in historic Key West—a one-of-a-kind sort of city with its own style of architecture, its own traditions and its own unique collection of locals. Check out the roosters descended from fighting cocks. Take your seat in an open air bar and watch the crowds stroll by. See where Hemingway lived with his six-toed cats. Make your way to Mallory Square in the last minutes before sunset to watch the spontaneous circus as natives and visitors celebrate the end of another perfect day. And find yourself at MM0—a landmark and popular picture-taking spot that marks the southern-most point in the continental U.S. Once you’re here, your Keys journey may be complete, but the fun of your vacation in the Keys has barely begun! And as long as there are fish in the ocean and margaritas in Margaritaville,® the Keys will remain one of the free-wheelingest good-time vacation destinations anywhere. 10 cp l t w o l 2 0 0 7 2007 l two l cp 11 B O Y N E Mountain Run at Boyne™ is the perfect place to enjoy all the winter magic that Boyne offers.
