BACKGROUND
PROGRAM
The current focus of the European textile and apparel industry on Bangladesh, Myanmar
and Ethiopia comes for a variety of reasons: Myanmar and Ethiopia are regarded as new
producer countries which compete successfully with established textile-exporting countries, resulting in the shift of production facilities and changes in the global supply chains.
Bangladesh has seen considerable concern about the working conditions in its textile
industry following several serious incidents in 2012 and 2013 resulting in high numbers
of casualties. For the whole textile and apparel industry, ensuring the sustainability of its
global supply chains has become a major challenge as consumers become more critical
about how products are being manufactured.
BANGLADESH, MYANMAR & ETHIOPIA
Is there a “Vision 2020” for the textile and apparel industry? What opportunities and
possibilities are offered by these three countries? Can Myanmar and Ethiopia continue
to challenge established producer countries? What are the future demands on social
and ecological standards in the industry? Will Bangladesh be able to meet such demands and stay in the race? What strategies can guarantee the success of textile and
apparel companies in an ever demanding industry?
Our event brings together experts and corporate representatives that will discuss possible answers to these questions. Experts from industrial associations and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), representatives from European textile and apparel
companies, and representatives from the three producing countries are discussing the
challenges and possible solutions for a sustainable textile and clothing industry.
