Castelnuovo Val di Cecina
Leccia Il borgo de la “Leccia” è un piccolissimo insediamento urbano di origine
medievale, posto nella Val di Cornia,
sulla strada che collega Sasso Pisano
a Larderello. In prossimità del Borgo,
presso il cimitero del paese, il Santuario della Madonna del Libro .
Dalla strada che collega Sasso e Leccia
è possibile accedere agli scavi delle
Antiche Terme del Bagno : un vasto
complesso termale etrusco-romano
attivo dal III sec. a.C. fino all’epoca
tardo imperiale, che testimonierebbe
lo sfruttamento, fin dall’antichità delle
risorse geotermiche locali. Secondo
illustri fonti dovrebbe trattarsi delle
Aquae Populoniae o delle Aquas Volaternas, assai note nell’’antichità classica e riportate nella Tabula Itineraria
Peutingeriana. Le strutture archeologiche sono inserite in un ambiente
naturale pregevole e suggestivo.
The territory: nature, geothermal
phenomena and medieval villages
The commune of Castelnuovo Val di
Cecina lies on the southern edge of
the province of Pisa on the border
between the provinces of Siena and
Grosseto. The hilly landscape typical
of the Cecina Valley is even more accentuated in this area : thick woodland
line the hills and the Mediterranean
vegetation gives way to Apennine vegetation (chestnut, Turkey oak and Hornbeams).
The area is particularly thriving in
geothermal phenomena especially in
the area of Sasso Pisano.
Fumaroles are an example of natural geothermal phenomena and we
can only imagine how the landscape
of the “valley of the devil” must have
appeared before the steam was piped
and utilized for the production of electricity.
The urban settlements are concentrated at Castelnuovo and the fractions
of Sasso Pisano, Montecastelli Pisano
and Leccia: four medieval hilltop villages with a characteristic formation of
the look-out posts of Long bard origin.
Castelnuovo Val di Cecina The medieval village is built on the
side of a steep ridge. A winding narrow
road leads to the top of the hill , to the
castle and parish church, which still
retains some of its Romanesque features including the crypt, and unites the
village to the castle.
The village still retains its characteristic medieval urban layout surrounded
by woodland. Peace and quiet reign in
an area unreachable by car and where
in the last few years a growing number
of Italian and foreign residents have
come to settle in the available, recently
restored apartments.
From the village you can walk directly
into the chestnut woods down to the
Val di Pavone to admire the medieval
bridges “Ponte Alto and Ponte
del Defizio” .
During the winter there is deer hunting, mushroom and chestnut picking.
Most of the shops and facilities are
both in the old and new parts of the
village.
Castagneti
Leccia Leccia is a very small medieval village
which lies in the Cornia Valley on the
road from Sasso Pisano to Larderello.
Close to the village in the cemetery
there is the sanctuary of the “Madonna
del Libro” .
On the road from Sasso to Leccia it is
possible to visit the remains of the
ancient baths of Bagno : a vast
Etruscan-Roman bathing complex
which was used from the 3rd century
B.C. to the late Imperial era and
stands as testimony to the exploitation
of the local geothermal resources since
antiquity.
According to investigation this area
was part of the Aquae Populoniae or
of the Aquas Volaternas, well known
throughout the classical world and
marked on the Tabula Itineraria
Peutingeriana. The archaeological site
lies in a splendidly unique natural
environment.

Das Gebiet: Natur, Geothermik
und Ortschaften
Die Gemeinde Castelnuovo im Val di
Cecina liegt am südlichen Rand der
Provinz Pisa bzw. an der Grenze der
Provinzen Siena und Grosseto. Dort
wird die Hügellandschaft Val di Cecina
unwegsamer: dichte Wälder bedecken
die Hügel und die mediterrane Vegetation weicht der apenninischen Pflanzenwelt (Kastanien, Zerreiche,
Hainbuche).
Außerdem ist das Gebiet mehr als anderswo von den besonderen geothermischen Erscheinungen gekennzeichnet, vor allem in der Nähe der
Ortschaft Sasso Pisano. Fumarolen
und schwefelige Ausdünstungen sind ein Beispiel für die natürliche
Geothermik; sie zeigen, wie sich das
„Tal des Teufels” vor der Niederlassung
von Industrien darbot, welche die in
der Erdsohle vorhandenen Dämpfe zur
natürlichen und erneuerbaren Gewinnung elektrischer Energie kanalisiert
haben.
Die Ansiedelungen konzentrieren sich
auf den Hauptort Castelnuovo und die
drei Ortsteile Sasso Pisano, Montecastelli Pisano und Leccia: vier Ortschaften auf ebenso vielen Hügeln gemäß
einer Charakteristik der alten
Wachtburgen langobardischen Ursprungs.
Manifestazioni geotermiche
Castelnuovo, Val di Cecina Die mittelalterliche Ortschaft ist auf
einem steilen Felsen kreisförmig errichtet worden; enge, gewundene Wege
schlängeln sich den Gipfel hinauf, wo
sich die Burg und die Pfarrkirche befinden. Die letztere weist römische
Spuren auf, wie auch die Krypta, welche das „Dorf” mit der „Burg” verbindet.
Das architektonisch homogene und
typisch mittelalterliche von Wäldern
umgebende Dorf wirkt eigentümlich
und einladend; es bietet Ruhe und
Frieden, da dort seit einigen Jahren
keine Autos mehr fahren dürfen; für
die wachsende Zahl italienischer und
ausländischer Gäste stehen freie, restaurierte Ferienwohnungen zur
Verfügung.
Vom Dorf kann man direkt in die umgebenden Kastanienwälder gelangen und
bis zum Val di Pavone hinabgehen, wo
man die zwei mittelalterlichen
Brücken “Ponte Alto und “Ponte
del Defizio” bewundern kann .
Herbst und Winter sind die Zeiten der
Montecastelli Pisano
Jagd und des Pilze- und Kastaniensammelns.
Im oberen und neueren Teil der Ortschaft befinden sich die meisten Geschäfte und Ämter.
Sasso Pisano
Die Ortschaft liegt auf einem Felsen
in der Nähe der Quellen des Flusses
Cornia und an der höchsten Stelle
steht die San Bartolomeo gewidmete
Pfarrkirche. Ganz in der Nähe des Dorfes kann man einige Fumarolen und
schwefelige Ausdünstungen betrachten, die immer deutlicher werden,
wenn man dem „beschilderten Weg”
folgt. Leicht zugänglich für einen kurzen Besuch sind auch die geothermischen Erscheinungen und der kleine
Erga-Park in der Ortschaft Lagoni.
Sehenswert ist dort auch die kleine,
von dem Architekten Giovanni Michelucci 1958 errichtete Kapelle.
Montecastelli Pisano Sehr gut erhalten und einladend ist
auch das Dorf Montecastelli mit einer
schönen Aussicht auf das umliegenden
Land. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist
die nach den Heiligen Filippo und Giacomo benannte romanische Pfarrei
und der Turm Pannocchieschi; in der
Nähe von Montecastelli ist das etruskische Grab “Buca delle Fate”
aus
dem 8. Jahrhundert v. Chr., wenige
Meter von der Landstraße entfernt,
einen Besuch wert. Zu Fuß oder zu
Pferd kann man interessante Ausfüge
in die umgebenden Wälder und den
Bach Pavone entlang unternehmen.
Leccia Das Dorf “Leccia” ist eine kleine Ansiedlung mittelalterlichen Ursprungs
im Val di Cornia, an der Straße, die
Sasso Pisano und Larderello verbindet.
In der Nähe der Ortschaft, bei dem
Dorffriedhof steht die Wallfahrtskirche "Madonna del Libro" .
Von der Straße, die Sasso und Leccia
verbindet, kann man zu den Ausgrabungen der Antiken Therme von Bagno
gelangen: Dieser etruskischrömische Thermalkomplex, der vom 3.
Jahrhundert v. Chr. bis in die späte
Kaiserzeit in Betrieb war, belegt die
Nutzbarmachung der lokalen geothermischen Ressourcen seit dem Altertum.
Laut bedeutender Quellen müsste es
sich dabei um die Aquae Populoniae
oder die Aquas Volaternas handeln,
die im klassischen Altertum sehr bekannt waren und in der Tabula Itineraria Peutingeriana erwähnt sind. Die
archäologischen Strukturen sind in
eine kostbare und reizende Umwelt
eingefügt.

et les bourgs
La commune de Castelnuovo di Val di
Cecina occupe la partie méridionale
de la province de Pise, à la limite des
provinces de Sienne et de Grosseto.
Ici le paysage de collines de la Val di
Cecina se fait plus âpre: d’épais bois
recouvrent les reliefs et la végétation
méditerranéenne fait place à celle de
type appenninico (châtaignier, chêne
chevelu).
Le territoire d’autre part est caractérisé plus qu’ailleurs par ses particulières manifestations géothermiques:
surtout aux environs du village de Sasso Pisano.
Les fumerolles et les exhalaisons sulfureuses sont un exemple de géothermie en site naturel et montrent
comment se présentait le paysage de
la “vallée du Diable” avant
l’implantation des activités industrielles qui ont capté la vapeur disponible
du sous-sol pour la production d’une
énergie électrique verte et renouvelable.
L’implantation urbaine est concentrée
dans le chef-lieu, Castelnuovo, et dans
ses trois hameaux de Sasso Pisano,
Montecastelli Pisano et Leccia: quatre
bourgs retranchés sur autant de collines selon la typologie caractéristique
des anciennes places fortes de repérage d’origine lombarde.
Castelnuovo Val di Cecina Le bourg médiéval est construit sur un
rocher abrupte selon un plan circulaire; ses ruelles tortueuses et étroites
se dénouent jusqu’au sommet de la
roche où se tient l’église paroissiale
qui conserve intactes quelques parties
romanes, comme par exemple la crypte
qui réunit le “bourg“ au “château”.
Le bourg, avec sa physionomie architecturale homogène et typiquement
médiévale, se présente de façon caractéristique et accueillante, intégré comme il est au milieu des bois environnants, il offre sa tranquillité et sa paix,
puisque son accès en est interdit aux
voitures; et il devient de plus en plus
un lieu de tourisme résidentiel
d’italiens et d’étrangers vu ses disponibilités en location d’appartements
libres et réaménagés. Depuis le village
il est possible d’accéder directement
aux bois de châtaigniers des alentours
ou de descendre jusqu’au Val di Pavone
où il est possible d’admirer les deux
ponts médiévaux “Ponte Alto” et
“Ponte del Defizio” .
En automne et en hiver, la chasse, la
cueillette de champignons et le ramassage des châtaignes sont des activités
très répandues.
C’est dans la partie haute et dans la
partie neuve du village que se trouve
la majeure quantité de magasins et de
services.
Sasso Pisano
L’ancien centre habité est situé sur un
bloc de pierres à proximité des sources
du fleuve Cornia, au sommet du bourg
se dresse l’église paroissiale dédiée à
St. Bartholomé. Tout de suite à proximité du village il est possible d’observer
les fumerolles et les exhalaisons de gaz sulfureux éparpillées, qui se
remarquent mieux si l’on suit
l’itinéraire spécial fléché. Les phénomènes géothermiques et le petit Parc
Erga dans la localité Lagoni permettent
également une visite facilement accessible et rapide. Auprès de Lagoni la
petite chapelle réalisée en 1958 par
l’architecte Giovanni Michelucci mérite
elle aussi d’être visitée.
Montecastelli Pisano Il est décidément bien conservé et
agréable le bourg de Montecastelli
avec sa position panoramique sur la
campagne environnante. A l’intérieur
du bourg et qui sont particulièrement
remarquables se trouvent l’église romane dédiée aux saints Philippe et
Jacques et la tour des Pannocchieschi;
à proximité de Montecastelli, à quelques mètres de la route provinciale,
est digne d’intérêt, la tombe étrusque
du “Trou des Fées”
qui date du
VIIIème Siècle av.J.C. Il est aussi possible à pied ou à cheval de suivre un
intéressant itinéraire à travers les bois
environnants le long du torrent Pavone.
Leccia Le bourg de la Leccia est un très petit
habitat urbain d’origine médiévale,
situé dans la Val di Cornia, sur la route
qui relie Sasso Pisano à Larderello.
Aux alentours du village, se note son
cimetière, le Sanctuaire de la "Madonna del Libro" . Depuis la route
qui relie Sasso à la Leccia il est possible d’accéder aux fouilles des Antiques
Thermes du Bagno : un vaste complexe thermale étrusco-romain, actif
entre le IIIème Siècle av.J.C. et
l’époque tardive impériale, qui témoigne de l’exploitation depuis l’antiquité,
des ressources géothermales locales.
Selon d’illustres sources il devrait s’agir
des Aquae Populoniae ou bien des
Aquas Volaternas, assez connues dans
l’antiquité classique et reportées sur la
Tabula Itineraria Peutingeriana. Ces
structures archéologiques sont insérées
dans un milieu naturel précieux et suggestif.

Montecastelli Pisano Decisamente ben conservato e gradevole il Borgo di Montecastelli, in posizione panoramica sulla campagna circostante. Di particolare rilievo,
all’interno del Borgo, la Pieve romanica intitolata ai santi Filippo e Giacomo
e la torre dei Pannocchieschi; in prossimità di Montecastelli, a pochi metri
dalla strada provinciale, merita attenzione la tomba etrusca della “Buca
delle Fate”
risalente al VIII sec.

Castelnuovo Val di Cecina Il Borgo medievale, è costruito a pianta
circolare su un ripido scoglio; vie tortuose e strette si snodano fino alla
sommità ove risiede la rocca e la chiesa
parrocchiale che conserva alcuni tratti
romanici, come pure la cripta che unisce il “Borgo” al “Castello”.
Il Borgo, con una fisionomia architettonica omogenea e tipicamente medievale, si presenta caratteristico e accogliente, integrato con i boschi
circostanti; offre tranquillità e quiete
non essendo percorribile con le auto
e, da alcuni anni, è interessato da un
fenomeno crescente di turismo residenziale di italiani e stranieri, vista la
disponibilità di appartamenti liberi e
ristrutturati.
Dal paese è possibile accedere direttamente ai circostanti boschi di castagni, scendere fino alla Val di Pavone
dove è possibile ammirare i due ponti
medievali “Ponte Alto” e “Ponte
del Defizio” .
Sasso Pisano
Il centro abitato antico è posto su un
macigno in prossimità delle sorgenti
del fiume Cornia, sulla sommità del
borgo, la Chiesa parrocchiale dedicata
a San Bartolomeo. Già in prossimità
del borgo è possibile osservare putizze
e fumarole sparse che si fanno più
evidenti seguendo un apposito
“percorso segnalato”. Facilmente accessibili, per una visita veloce, le manifestazioni geotermiche e il piccolo
Parco Erga in località Lagoni. Presso
i Lagoni merita una visita la piccola
cappella realizzata nel 1958
dall’Architetto Giovanni Michelucci.

The old part of the village with its

river. From here it is possible to see
the scattered fumaroles or descend
and follow the “signed trail” to the

Il Comune di Castelnuovo di Val di
Cecina occupa il lembo meridionale
della provincia di Pisa, al confine con
le province di Siena e Grosseto. Qui, il
paesaggio collinare della Val di Cecina
si fa più aspro: fitti boschi ricoprono i
rilievi e la vegetazione mediterranea
lascia il posto a quella appenninica
(castagni, cerri carpini).
Inoltre, più che altrove il territorio è
profondamente caratterizzato dalle
particolari manifestazioni geotermiche: soprattutto in prossimità
dell’abitato di Sasso Pisano. Fumarole
e putizze sono un esempio di geotermia al naturale e mostrano come
si presentasse il paesaggio della “valle
del Diavolo” prima dell’insediamento
delle attività industriali che hanno
incanalato il vapore disponibile dal
sottosuolo per la produzione di energia
elettrica verde e rinnovabile.
L’insediamento urbano è concentrato
nel capoluogo, Castelnuovo e nelle tre
frazioni di Sasso Pisano, Montecastelli
Pisano e Leccia: quattro borghi arroccati su altrettante colline secondo una
tipologia caratteristica della antiche
rocche di avvistamento di origine longobarda.

From the hills to the sea. From the
cemetery in Castelnuovo, pass through a part
of the chestnut wood, cross the Possera river
in the vicinity of the fresh water springs and
proceed up to the “Appennini” area. At the
top there is a road leading to the “Appennini”
farmhouse from which you can admire the
Cornia Valley, the gulf of Piombino, the isle
of Elba and even the island of Corsica. To
return take the path that leads back to where
you started.

Dalle colline al mare - Dal cimitero di
Castelnuovo si sale verso il monte, si percorre
un tratto di castagneto, si attraversa il
torrente Possera, vicino a sorgenti di acqua
potabile, e si risale verso la località
“Appennini”. Arrivati in cima si incontra la
strada che conduce al Podere “Appennini”
da dove si possono ammirare: la vallata del
Cornia, il Golfo di Piombino, l’Isola d’Elba e
perfino la Corsica. Al rientro si percorre la
strada consortile che ritorna al paese
esattamente da dove siamo partiti.

Des collines a la mer. Depuis le cimetière
de Castelnuovo vous montez tout droit vers
le “monte”, vous traversez une partie de la
châtaigneraie, puis le torrent du Possera non
loin des sources d’eau potable et vous
remontez vers la localité des Appennini. Une
fois arrivés au sommet on trouve la route qui
conduit à la ferme des Appennini d’où vous
pourrez admirer : la vallée de Cornia, le golfe
de Piombino, l’île d’Elbe et même la Corse.
Au retour vous prendrez la route de terre qui
vous ramènera au village exactement à
l’endroit d’où vous êtes partis.

Le putizze e le fumarole. Si parte dall’inizio
del paese di Sasso Pisano e attraverso il
castagneto si raggiunge la sommità del
monte, dove si può vedere il paese di
Monterotondo Marittimo. Allo stesso livello,
però verso nord, si arriva dove la terra fuma
e, camminando lungo la linea elettrica
dismessa, si ritorna al paese di Sasso Pisano.

Possera (in der Nähe befinden sich
Trinkwasserquellen) und steigt dann erneut
an in Richtung “Appennini”, wie dieser Ort
genannt wird. Oben angekommen, stößt man
auf die Straße, die zum Podere “Appennini”
führt. Hier genießt man eine herrliche
Aussicht ins Cornia-Tal, zum Golf von
Piombino, zur Insel Elba und sogar bis Korsika.
Der Rückweg nach Castelnuovo über eine
nichtasphaltierte Straße endet genau wieder
am Ausgangspunkt der Wanderung.

Hot water jets and fumaroles. Starting
from the village of Sasso Pisano pass through
the chestnut wood to the top of the hill where
you can admire the view of Monterotondo
Marittimo, proceed north in the direction of
the steaming jets and return by the old
electricity route back to Sasso Pisano.
Schwefeldämpfe und Fumarolen.
Ausgangspunkt der Wanderung ist der
Ortseingang von Sasso Pisano. Nach
Durchquerung des Kastanienwaldes erreicht
man die Bergspitze, wo man einen schönen
Blick auf die Ortschaft Monterotondo
Marittimo hat. Auf gleicher Höhe, jedoch in
nördlicher Richtung, kommt man zu einer
Stelle, wo die Erde dampft. Geht man an der
stillgelegten Stromleitung entlang, erreicht
man wieder den Ort Sasso Pisano.
Gaz Sulfureux et fumerolles. Nous partons
depuis le début du village de Sasso Pisano
et en traversant la châtaigneraie nous
atteignons le sommet du mont, depuis lequel
nous apercevons le village de Monterotondo
Marittimo. Au même niveau, mais dans la
direction du nord, on arrive là où la terre
fume et, en marchant le long de la ligne
électrique abandonnée nous retournons au
village de Sasso Pisano.
