The lovers of the Sun and the water can choose from the
3 beaches of Keszthely between the beginning of May and the
end of September. The velvet-soft shallow of the lake, the sandy
beaches and the playgrounds offer cheerful enjoyment. The
Island Bath is the oldest bath of the region. Next to the island
on the municipal beach of Keszthely you can find free water
slides and free sun beds, electric jet skis and a heated pool of
the same shape as the lake. After the bathing you should try
the tasty wines of the region and the special Hungarian foods.

Geschichte von Keszthely

Keszthely hat nach dieser Festung in Fenékpuszta (Castellum)
genannt. Im Jahre 1947, als Keszthely zum ersten Mal schriftlich
erwähnt wurde, verfügte sie bereits über 2 Kirchen. Die Familie
Festetics hat von 1739 die Verwaltung des Landgutes nach
Keszthely verlegt. Die bedeutendste Persönlichkeit der Familie
war György Festetics, der Keszthely zur einem geistlichen
Zentrum des Landes machte. Nach dem Ausgleich von 1867
entwickelte sich die Stadt zu einem Badeort und gleichzeitig
zu einem Handelszentrum mit zahlreichen Lehranstalten und
kulturellen Schwerpunkte.

The name of the town spring from the fort of Fenékpuszta
(castellum). In 1247, when Keszthely warst first mentioned in
written sources, the town had already had 2 churches. From
1739 the Festetics family made Keszthely the centre of its huge
estates. The most important member of the family was György
Festetics, who made Keszthely one of the intellectual centres
of the country. After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of
1867 the town was famous about its beaches and the Georgikon
University, wich developped into the cultural and commercial
centre of the region.

A fenékpusztai erőd a város névadója
(castellum). 1247-ben, amikor írott forrás először említi Keszthely város nevét,
már két templommal és egy kis kápolnával
rendelkezett. 1739-től a Festeticsek birtokaik
központját ide helyezték. A család egyik
legjelentősebb személyisége Festetics György,
aki az ország egyik szellemi központjává
tette Keszthelyt. A kiegyezés után fürdőés iskolavárossá fejlődött, ma a környék
kulturális- és kereskedelmi központja.

The first bathing house built on the water was completed in
1864, the round island bath was built in the 1880’s, which in
1893 was extended into a facility consisting of two islands with
a lavishly decorated entrance. In 1960, instead of renovation,
a new island made from steel and concrete slabs was
created. Recently, the original wooden structure has been
reconstructed.

wurde 1864 fertiggestellt, die runde
Badeinsel wurde in den 1880er Jahren
gebaut und wurde 1893 zu einem aus zwei
Inseln bestehenden Bad mit verziertem Eingang erweitert.
Statt Renovierung wurde 1960 aus Metall- und Betonplatten
ein neues Inselbad gebaut. In den vergangenen Jahren, wurde
die ursprüngliche Holzkonstruktion in mehreren Etappen
rekonstruiert.

Az első vízre épített fürdőház 1864-ben készült, a kerek
fürdőszigetet az 1880-as években építették, amit 1893ban díszes bejárattal két szigetből álló fürdővé bővítettek.
Felújítás helyett 1960-ban fém- és betonlemezből új
szigetfürdőt építettek. Az elmúlt években,
több ütemben az eredeti faszerkezetet
állították helyre.

True love instead of the princedom
Earl Tasziló Festetics II. got to know Mary Hamilton, member
of the highest aristocratic rank, during his stay in England.
They fell in love but the Hamiltons were not in favour of it.
In spite of her will, Mary got married to the notable prince of
Monaco. Love is above everything. Leaving the princedom
and the fame behind, Mary escaped from her unhappy
marriage to Tasziló Festetics. Having been the marriage
nullificated, Tasziló Festetics and Mary Hamilton got married
in 1880. Tasziló Festetics was given the rank of earl in 1911.
The development and the prosper of the Festetics Castle
where the English hier apparent to the throne, the later
Edward VII. was invited is related to his name. Both of them
are burried in the Festetics Mausoleum in Saint Nicholas
cemetary in Keszthely.
As Helikon Castle Museum, it has been independent since 1974. Its library of 100000 volumes is the only complete aristocratic collection
in Hungary to have been left intact. It is a museum (permanent and
temporary exhibitions), a conference and cultural centre.

Mansardraum des Gebäudes wurde einer der größten Geländetische
Europas – mehr als 500 m2 – aufgebaut.
The Hunting Exhibition at Helikon Castle Museum in Keszthely is
presenting trophies of five Continents by Hungarian hunters and by
those closely related to Hungary. On the top floor one of Europe’s
largest modell rail exhibition of 500 m2 has been completed. 160 trains
run simultaneously on 2500 meters of tracks among 1000 buildings.

Hunting Exhibition
Graf Festetics Taszilo II, lernte Mary Hamilton, die zu den
höchsten Kreisen des europäischen Adels gehörte, während
seines Aufenthaltes in England kennen. Zwischen den
beiden entwickelte sich eine Liebe, die von den Hamiltons
nicht gerne gesehen wurde. Mary hatte gegen ihren Willen
einen vornehmen Grafen aus Monaco geheiratet. Die Liebe
jedoch überwindet jedes Hinderniss. Mary Hamilton lies
die Grafschaft und den Ruhm hinter sich, und floh aus ihrer
unglücklichen Ehe zu Taszilo Festetics. Nach der Annulierung
der Ehe heirateten Mary Hamilton und Graf Taszilo Festetics
im Jahr 1880. Taszilo Festetics erhielt 1911 den Rang eines
Herzogs. Sein Name ist mit dem Ausbau und Erblühen des
Festetics Schlosses eng verbunden. Sogar der englische
Tronfolger Edward VII war hier zu Gast. Ihre letzte Ruhestätte
fanden die Beiden im Festetics Mausoleum des keszthelyer
Szent Miklós Friedhof.

Gróf Festetics II. Tasziló angliai tartózkodása alatt
ismerkedett meg az európai arisztokrácia legmagasabb
köreihez tartozó Mary Hamiltonnal. Szerelem szövődött
a fiatalok között, amelyet a Hamilton család nem nézett
jó szemmel. Mary akarata ellenére házasságot kötött egy
előkelő monacói herceggel. „A szerelem azonban minden
akadályt legyőz!” Hátrahagyva a monacói hercegséget és
a hírnevet, Mary Hamilton Festetics Taszilóhoz menekült
boldogtalan házasságából. A házasság semmissé nyilvánítása
után Gróf Festetics Tasziló és Mary Hamilton 1880-ban keltek
egybe. Festetics Tasziló 1911-ben hercegi rangot kapott.
Nevéhez fűződik a keszthelyi Festetics kastély kibővítése és
felvirágoztatása, ahol az angol trónörököst, VII. Edwardot is
vendégül látta. Mindkettejük végső nyughelye a Festetics
mauzóleum a keszthelyi Szent Miklós temetőben.

Most of the buildings originate from the 19th
century. You find here the former Town Hall,
Pethő-house – the composer Károly Goldmark
was born here – and a Jewish house of prayer.
You can see on the main Square the Town Hall,
the Statue of the Holy Trinity, the Secondary
School and the Parish church. The original
Gothic church was built in 1386. The feature of the church is
the largest gothic frescoes of Hungary from the 15th century.
Dongó house: House wich was built in baroque style in the
middle of the 18th century. An impressive monument of the
town is the bronze statue of I. Festetics György in sitting
position, made by the sculptore Ferenc Farkas.

Die Gebäude der Fussgängerzone stammen
grösstenteils aus dem 19. Jh. Im ehemaligen Rathaus, Pethő Haus, wurde der Komponist Károly Goldmark geboren und hier
befindet sich auch ein jüddisches Gebetshaus. Am Hauptplatz finden Sie die Dreifaltigkeitsstatue, das Rathaus, das Gymnasium und die Pfarrkirche. Die Kirche
wurde 1386 gebaut, eine Besonderheit
der Kirche ist die größten Wandfresken
in Ungarn aus der Zeit der Gotik dar.

A Sétáló utca épületeinek nagy része a XIX. századból származik. Ilyen az egykori Városháza, a Pethőház, melyben Goldmark Károly zeneszerző
született, és a Zsinagóga épülete. Az utca Fő
terén található a Szentháromság szobor, a
Városháza, a Gimnázium épülete és a Plébániatemplom. A templom 1386-ban épült, különleges értéke a XV. századi gótikus falfreskó.

Wine is also made from this. Wine-gathering is a vivid event
in the life of the settlements even today as well as the related
merriment, shows and programmes.

The thermal lake with a surface of 44,400 m2 is the second
largest lake with peat bottom in the world. The medicinal
water gushes out from a 38 m deep spring crater. Its average
temperature in summer is 33-35 °C, but in winter it is not
less than 23 °C, so one can bath outside all year round. The
water of the lake has a special curative effect on the different
kinds of rheumatic, locomotor, muscle, and nervous system’s
disorders and gynaecological problems. The cure in Hévíz is

Auf einem 412 m hohen vulkanischen Kegel
