This year’s conference promises to be one of merging the old with new; thus our theme: “A New Spirit – A New Beginning”. I commend Michael Shorter, President of Broward County Chapter and co-chair of the Convention, Johnny McCray Convention co-chair, and all the members of the chapter for a job well done. These next four days promise to be exciting and informative to alumni, supporters, and our special guests. The leadership of any organization is paramount for its success. The workshop “Leading From The Front” is for all chapter officers and will include their duties/responsibilities, importance of deadlines, financial procedures, review of updated documents, and navigate the NAA website. Want to know what you can do to sustain the legacy of BethuneCookman University? If so, then “Leaving a Legacy” is the workshop for you to attend. I would like to thank our workshop presenters, namely, Mr. Kelvin Mayner, Mrs. Gwendolyn Anderson, Ms. Deborrah Threet and Mrs. Gleandeal Johnson-Young. Your support during my first year is appreciated as I became acclimated with my position as President. It is my intent that you will be excited, well-informed and ready to report back to your respective chapters with “A New Spirit” about the mission and vision of the National Alumni Association, and “A New Beginning” of your leadership roles, chapter obligations and membership. Let us never forget that we are the true stakeholders of Bethune-Cookman University. Keep dear B-CU in your prayers, remember B–CU in your giving and your spirit. With Warmest Regards, Jennifer L. It is my hope that this convention will be the most enjoyable convention you have ever experienced. May God continue to Bless our beloved institution. Respectfully yours, Michael Shorter, President Broward County Chapter of the National Alumni Association of Bethune –Cookman University 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 I would like to welcome the National Alumni Association of Bethune-Cookman University to Broward County. As a proud graduate of Bethune-Cookman, I am excited that you chose to hold your National Convention in Broward County. Broward County offers a wholesome environment for you and your family and we will do all we can to make your 47th National Alumni Convention an unforgettable event. When I attended Bethune-Cookman College (University) it was a new beginning that enlightened my spirit with the desire to serve. Bethune-Cookman's motto, "Enter to Learn Depart to Serve" was instilled in me every day. Because of that, my life has been about service. Bethune-Cookman encourages students to think of others and to constantly ask themselves, what can I do to make others’ lives better? This attitude of service helped to shape my life. In keeping with the theme, "A New Spirit - A New Beginning", you will find that our community has changed and we embrace and offer new beginnings to so many people. My hope is that your visit to Broward County will inspire others to do the same. Please enjoy all the sites and adventures available in the south Florida area. Let's Go Wildcats, Let's Go. Levoyd Williams Former Commissioner Lauderdale Lakes, Fl. 10 The National Alumni Association of Bethune-Cookman University 11 Journal Dedication Say not in grief 'he is no more' but in thankfulness that he was. - Hebrew Proverb The 47th Annual Alumni Convention Souvenir Journal is dedicated to Dr. Carver A. Portlock and Mr. Moses B. Stubbs, Jr. whose transitions have left voids in the lives of many alumni and the Association. Dr. Portlock's leadership in crafting the procedures by which the National Alumni Association operate, will ensure that he is ever-present. And who does not miss seeing Mr. Stubbs' smiling face as he greeted everyone at every convention, Booster event or other function where Wildcats met? We salute them and will forever hold them dear in our hearts. Dr. Carver A. Portlock was a 1955 graduate of Bethune-Cookman College (now known as Bethune-Cookman University). He was a former employee and served as the Executive Director of Alumni Affairs on campus and Director of Bethune-Cookman College’s Northeastern Office recruiting in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and other Northeastern American cities. Dr. Portlock was a member of the Bethune-Cookman University National Alumni Association where he served as president from 1983-1984 and chaired the National Alumni Association's MOPAC Committee which put together the rules and documents under which the NAA operates. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Mr. Moses B. Stubbs, Jr. was a 1949 graduate of BethuneCookman College (now known as Bethune-Cookman University). He was a loyal supporter and contributor to the University and was a member of the Wildcat Boosters for many years, serving as captain for Palm Beach County. Mr. Stubbs, a retired educator from the School District of Palm Beach County Schools, served as teacher, assistant principal and principal. He was chairman of the Gold Coast Credit Union Board of Directors, member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, Payne Chapel A.M.E. Church, National Alumni Association of Bethune-Cookman University Palm Beach County Chapter, coordinator of High School Class of 1945 and member of Retired Old Men Eating Out (R.O.M.E.O.) Group. 12 Convention History In 1932, Mr. Edward R. Rodriguez convened the General Alumni Association Meeting in Daytona Beach. Although unchartered as a national organization, interest was high and alumni gave their full support to the annual meetings. Because of the high level of alumni involvement, National President Attorney Horace Hill chartered the General Alumni Association as a National Organization - growing outside the boundaries of Daytona and offering inclusion of members and chapters near and far. In, 1969 Dr. Johnny L. Jones convened the first National Alumni Convention in Washington, DC. It was the first official convention and the first time outside the city of Daytona Beach, FL. This movement to "take the show on the road" gave Bethune-Cookman Alumni the opportunity to showcase our alma mater in areas where we were a lesser recognized organization. The National Alumni Association has held conventions in all of the U.S. cities that have chapters and internationally in the Bahamas. Stewart Edwin Wesley 62 Thank You Even if there was time and space to write the names of every person who contributed to the missions and goals of the National Alumni Association, we would probably forget someone. Please know that you are remembered in appreciation for every part you played. Thank you to the chapter presidents who led their chapter teams in membership retention and recruitment, fundraising, and other activities. Thank you to the chapter treasurers who reported financial information necessary for construction of parts of this journal and toward the election process. Thank you to everyone who combed through files and sent pictures or information to add to this Journal or the Clarion. Thank you for giving a lead or naming a contact who could help, when needed. Thank you to every member who lent a helping hand or lead when asked. Thank you to each member who paid annual dues, joined the Life Membership Club, or began subscribing to the Life Membership Club. Thank you to the chapters who came back or are in the pipeline for chapter induction. Thank you, in advance, for continuing your support and for keeping some of the Old B-CC Spirit, Catching the New Spirit, and Participating in the New Beginning. Each person who stepped up proved that when all of us step up, the association moves up and sincere thanks goes to YOU.
