British singer-songwriter Thea Gilmore will be releasing her new album, ‘Strange Communion’,
ahead of her UK tour throughout September and October. ‘Strange Communion’ is a Christmas album
which namechecks Jona Lewie and Julie Andrews, references the poetry of T. S. Eliot and Louis
MacNiece, and includes cover versions of obscure songs by Elvis Costello and Yoko Ono. The album
will precede the single, That’ll Be Christmas.
The Oxford-born singer-songwriter has been making intensely personal, socially aware music to
considerable praise since she was a teenager, and has racked up sales, acclaim and admiration from
peers such as Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez and Martha Wainwright, to name but a few. The
Independent regards her as "the best wordsmith of her generation", and Uncut labelled her "the best
British singer/songwriter of the last ten years - and then some."
‘Strange Communion’ is a stirring, emotive journey, by turns joyful, celebratory and sceptical; it delves
into the heart of the festive season and reflects on its institutions and contradictions. From the choral
splendour of "Sol Invictus", her collaboration with the award winning Sense Of Sound choir, to surely
the most unlikely duet of the year with Radio 2's Mark Radcliffe, to the ethereal beauty of "December
In New York", the album is shot through with Thea's crystalline voice and famously dazzling lyrics. And
forthcoming single "That'll Be Christmas" contains the catchiest, wittiest lyrics about the festive season
in many years. Indeed, "Strange Communion" is not an average snow-and-sleigh-bells offering; it

We are lucky to have musicians like Thea Gilmore, musicians that want more from
themselves and more from music than some pre-formed, whistle-friendly cud, something
to chew on but never fully digest. In an age where artists – male and female – tend to be
either hyper-sexualised or completely neutered, Gilmore is that rare creature, an actual
adult with a heart and a soul, a grown up with an opinion. Thea Gilmore is a real person
tackling the sort of issues real people deal with every day, only, unlike the rest of us, she
tackles those issues with an utterly beautiful voice and songs that touch on folk and jazz
and rock and Americana. Not for no reason does Bruce Springsteen buy her records, do
artistes ranging from Martha Wainwright to Mike Scott seek to collaborate with her, and
not for no reason does Tom Waits’ celebrated percussionist Michael Blair appear on
Murphy’s Heart. There is the sense of a tipping point being reached, one that follows a
sustained period of artistic and critical success.

Gilmore was born in Oxford to Irish parents and lived in the village of North Aston,
Oxfordshire. She became interested in music as a result of her father's record
collection, which included work by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and The Beatles. Later,
she listened to Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and The Replacements, among others. She
began writing poetry at the age of 15 to cope with the divorce of her parents.
Gilmore released her first album as a teenager, entitled Burning Dorothy, in
1998 and over the course of the next four years, released increasingly well-received
albums that earned her a reputation in the UK music press but no chart success. She
finally made a breakthrough at 23 with the release of Avalanche in August 2003,
which became her first album to break into the Official UK Album Chart, at #62, and
spawned two minor hit singles, "Juliet (Keep That in Mind)" and "Mainstream", for
which she garnered acclaim for producing a low-budget music video filmed in a local
Virgin Megastore. The video received exposure on the BBC’s flagship music show
“Top of the Pops 2”.
In 2004, folk singer Joan Baez personally invited Gilmore to open for her during her
tour leading up to the US presidential election. In 2005, Gilmore continued touring
commitments, for the first time not releasing a new album (the covers collection Loft
Music was widely released during 2004). In October 2005, she and Stonier married
in a ceremony near their home in Cheshire.
Gilmore finally returned to recording with the release of Harpo's Ghost in August
2006, after a two-and-a-half-year absence of new material. This was her first album
on major label Sanctuary Records after many years of independent releases. The
album was once again acclaimed in the music press and UK radio lent their support
to the single "Cheap Tricks". Gilmore has been touted by Uncut magazine as "the
best British singer-songwriter of the last 10 years...and then some" and has gained
steady acclaim for each of her albums.
On 14 November 2006, Gilmore gave birth to her first child with Stonier, a son
named Egan, having conducted a UK tour in the autumn whilst heavily pregnant.
Subsequent to the release of Harpo's Ghost she parted company with her manager
Sara Austin, left Sanctuary Records and released EP The Threads independently on
her March 2007 UK tour with remaining copies sold on her website afterwards.

On 19 May 2008 Fruitcake Records (via Fullfill and distributed by Universal Records)
released Liejacker, Gilmore's eighth album featuring contributions from Joan Baez,
DaveMcCabe, and Erin McKeown. It was preceded on 12 May by the single "Old
Soul", a duet with McCabe. In June 2008, Gilmore signed to Rykodisc (Warner) for
the United States. Liejacker was released in the U.S. on 23 September 2008.
Thea's first ever live album Recorded Delivery was released on May 25, 2009, on
Fullfill/Universal. The recordings are taken from UK shows during 2006 and 2008,
with the first half of the album being acoustic, and the second half being electric,
with a full band. In July 2009 she released a yearly subscription service / fan club,
“Angels in the Abbatoir”. Gilmore rounded out 2009 with the release of an album of
Christmas- and winter-themed songs, Strange Communion, featuring eight
originals penned by Gilmore and/or Stonier as well as two cover versions – Yoko
Ono’s "Listen, the Snow is Falling" and Elvis Costello’s "The St. Stephen's Day
Murders."

Wir können uns glücklich schätzen, dass es Musiker wie Thea Gilmore gibt. Musiker, die
höhere Anforderungen an sich und ihre Musik stellen, als Songs zu schreiben die zwar zum
Mitträllern einladen, aber vorgeformt, wiedergekäut, und nie vollständig verdaut sind. In
einem Zeitalter, wo alle Künstler – egal ob Mann oder Frau – sich in der Regel entweder
hypersexualisiert oder vollständig asexuell präsentieren - ist Gilmore eine

Gilmore kam als Kind irischer Eltern in Oxford zur Welt und verbrachte ihre Kindheit in

2004 wurde sie persönlich von Folksängerin Joan Baez als Opening Act für deren Tour zu
den US Präsidentschaftswahlen eingeladen. 2005 erfüllte Gilmore ihre
Tourneeverpflichtungen und gab zum ersten Mal kein neues Album heraus (ihre
Coversammlung Loft Music wurde bereits 2004 veröffentlicht). Im Oktober 2005 heirateten
sie und Stonier in der Nähe ihres Zuhauses in Cheshire.
Mit dem Release von Harpo's Ghost im August 2006 fing Gilmore nach einer
zweiundeinhalbjährigen Pause ohne neues Material endlich wieder an Aufnahmen zu
veröffentlichen. Nachdem sie viele Jahre mit unabhängigen Labels gearbeitet hatte, war
Harpo‘s Ghost ihr erstes Album, das mit Sanctuary Records von einem Major Label
herausgegeben wurde. In der Fachpresse und wurde es hochgelobt und die Single "Cheap

Tricks" wurde von Radio UK unterstützt. Uncut-Magazin bezeichnete Gilmore als "beste
britische Sängerin und Songwriter der letzten 10 Jahre ... – wenn nicht noch besser" und sie
hat für jedes ihrer Alben stetigen Beifall bekommen. Am 14 November 2006 brachte Gilmore
ihr erstes gemeinsames Kind mit Stonier zur Welt, einen Sohn namens Egan, nachdem sie
noch den ganzen Herbst hochschwanger durch die UK getourt ist.
Nach der Veröffentlichung von Harpo's Ghost trennte sie sich von ihrer Managerin Sara
Austin, verließ Sanctuary Records und veröffentlichte die EP The Threads unabhängig auf
ihrer März 2007 UK-Tour und verkaufte anschließend die restlichen Exemplare auf ihrer
Webseite. Am 19. Mai 2008 brachte Fruitcake Records (via Fulfill und Vertrieb durch
Universal Records) Liejacker - Gilmores achtes Album - heraus mit Beiträgen von Joan
Baez, DaveMcCabe und Erin McKeown. Während die Auskopplung "Old Soul", ein Duett
mit McCabe, schon am 12. Mai erschien. Im Juni 2008 unterzeichnete Gilmore einen
Plattenvertrag mit Rykodisc (Warner) für die Vereinigten Staaten. Liejacker wurde in den
USA am 23. September 2008 veröffentlicht.
Theas erstes Live-Album Recorded Delivery wurde am 25. Mai 2009 bei Fulfill/Universal
herausgegeben. Die Aufnahmen sind von ihren Tourneen in Großbritannien in 2006 und
2008, wobei die erste Hälfte des Albums akustisch, und die zweite Hälfte elektrisch, mit einer
kompletten Band, aufgezeichnet wurde. Im Juli 2009 gründete sie einen jährlichen AboService/Fanclub "Angels in the Abbatoir". Gilmore rundete das Jahr 2009 mit der
Veröffentlichung eines Albums von Weihnachts- und Winterliedern ab. Strange Communion
enthält acht originale Songs von Gilmore und / oder Stonier sowie zwei Coverversionen Yoko Onos "Listen the Snow is Falling" und Elvis Costellos "The St. Stephen's Day
Murders".
