Zermatt is located on the Italian border in Valais, a canton in Western Switzerland. It is a

amount of rainfall in the whole of Switzerland.
The village is on the same line of latitude as Lugano, a mere 1,620 m above sea level. Almost
one third of the 4,000 m high Alps are grouped around the village, which became world
famous in 1865 when Edward Whymper,
from London, became the first man to climb
the 4,478 m high Matterhorn mountain. Since
then, Zermatt has characterised the image of
Switzerland and is popular as a holiday destination among visitors from both Switzerland
and abroad.

year round in the summer skiing region on the

enjoy the surroundings. Long, signposted hiking routes can be used in summer.
Nevertheless snow sports is not all Zermatt has
