Hamburg’s more than 100 neighbourhoods are
home to some 1.8 million residents. Each part of
the city has its own special charm. Speicherstadt
(Warehouse City), for example, has been under
protection as a heritage site since 1991. The area
known as Treppenviertel in Blankenese has a
certain Mediterranean charm and is a popular
destination for a day out as well as being the
­picturesque home to the affluent. The Elbphil­
harmonie in the HafenCity features futuristic
architecture amid an attractive archipelago sur­
rounded by kilometres of promenades along the
former port basin. Neustadt: along ABC Strasse,
Jungfernstieg, Grosse Bleichen and Neuer Wall,
home to upmarket shops. In and around the
Hafen (port): Altonaer Balkon (fine vista), the
Fish Market, Grosse Elbstrasse, where gourmet
dining reigns. St. Georg: picturesque and multi­
cultural amid former factories and slaughter­
houses. The hippest shopping area is found
in the Karolinenviertel (also known as “Karo­
viertel”) in St. Pauli.

and Saturday. It’s good for dan­
cing and smoking is allowed, but
there’s no cloakroom and no tele­
vision. Allegedly Hamburg’s best
kiosk for fish sandwiches can be
found next to the landing stage.

Opened again in February 2013
in virtually the same spot ten
years after it closed. The entrance
to this world-famous club opens
in the ground as if by magic and
down into the depths you des­
cend. Guests disport themselves

are crazy about amber. They will
also discover a wealth of other
absorbing information about this
captivating and mysterious
­gemstone, which has been creat­
ed from fossilised tree resin for
thousands of years. It glows in the
display cases in the form of
­earrings, statues of Buddha and
heavy bead necklaces. Prices
range from 7 euro for ear studs
through to the cost of a fair-sized
family home.

This trendy delicatessen was
opened in 2007 by designer and
gastronome Jan Schawe. It sells
food like mother used to make:
unadulterated, ecologically irre­
proachable and with a touch
of humour: organic liver sausage,
breakfast marmalade of plum,
elderberry and currants, pep­
pery cranberries, goat’s milk
chocolate, African Queen chut­
ney and a host of other gourmet
treats. All produced in manage­
able quantities by family-run

The creativity of the three
­enthusiastic redesigners crafting
Lockengelöt’s products is virtual­
ly unbounded. They simply
transform any disused item they
get their hands on. Their avowed
mission is redesign and up­
cycling, with the aim of refunc­
tioning everyday items and
­extending their usefulness. Vinyl
records become lamps, oil drums
morph into occasional tables and
cabinets. The results are attract­
ive, amusing, practical and a
wake-up call to our throw-away
society.

er. Inspired by dreams of pirates,
rock ’n’ roll and biker aesthetics,
Fritz Ahrens and Holger Hech­
tenberg established this cool
leather fashion label with its
skull logo back in 1984. Since
then, their hide and sleek prod­
ucts have enjoyed cult status
among leather buffs – bespoke
tailored in their in-house work­
shop or ready to wear off the
peg. Solid sterling silver is used
both to decorate the clothing
and to create intriguing items of
­jewellery.

im Herbst ansteht, bleibt die
Kunsthalle nahe der Aussen­
alster für Besucher geöffnet. Sie
beherbergt eine der wichtigsten
öffentlichen Kunstsammlun­
gen Deutschlands und gehört
zu den wenigen Häusern, die
einen Rundgang durch sieben
Jahrhunderte Kunstgeschichte
bieten können. In wechselnden
Präsentationen der renom­
mierten Sammlungsbestände
wird die Entwicklung der Kunst
vom Mittelalter bis in die heu­
tige Zeit gezeigt.
Despite being scheduled for
modernisation this autumn,
the Kunsthalle, near the Aussen­
alster, remains open to visitors.
It houses one of the most signifi­
cant public collections of art in
Germany and is one of the few
museums that enables visitors to
experience the history of art over
seven centuries. The acclaimed
items in its collections are dis­
played in different presentations
to illustrate the various develop­
ments that art has undergone
from the Middle Ages to the pre­
sent day.

ly. In particular, to my favourite restaurant: Henssler & Henssler,
which serves the most sensational sushi. The rib-eye steak
sourced from free-range cattle is also very tasty. Managed superb­
ly by Werner, Peter & Steffen Henssler (the latter a popular
­German television personality), the restaurant features a cool
Nordic interior. If I ever meet Steffen there in person, I would
be delighted indeed! Bon appétit.“
