Welcome to the State Capital
Viele Wege führen nach Mainz. Mit der Bahn
erreicht man die Stadt über den restaurierten
Hauptbahnhof. Er ist nicht nur ein architektonisches Juwel, sondern war zu seiner Erbauungszeit auch der größte Europas. Dank der
zentralen Lage in der Region Rhein-Main, der
Nähe zu gleich zwei Flughäfen und den guten
Autobahnverbindungen ist die Landeshauptstadt
von Rheinland-Pfalz ein interessanter Standort
für Handel, Wirtschaft und Kongresswesen.
Mainz am Rhein ist Wirklichkeit und Versprechen zugleich. Der Fluss ist eine Wasserstraße
mit regem Schiffsverkehr und der Lebensnerv
der Metropole von Rheinhessen. An seinem
Ufer stehen die Tagungs- und Veranstaltungsstätten Rheingoldhalle und Kurfürstliches
Schloss neben den barocken Bauten der Landesregierung und dem modernen Rathaus.
Den entspannten Stadtcharakter erspüren
Besucher bei einem Spaziergang entlang der
Uferpromenade. Und das zu jeder Jahreszeit,
am schönsten aber von Frühjahr bis Herbst,
wenn die Mainzer und ihre Gäste hier flanieren,
die Bänke und Wiesen bevölkern oder an den
Rheinstränden sonnenbaden. Viele Studenten
finden sich hier ein, junge Familien nutzen die
Spielangebote und die Passagiere der Rheinschiffe legen zu einem Landgang an. Sie bewundern eines der schönsten Stadtpanoramen
an Europas längstem Strom. Und bekommen
eine Ahnung dessen, was es heißt
„Leben Sie Mainz“.
Many roads lead to Mainz. By train you reach
the city at the refurbished Main Station. It is not
only an architectural jewel, but at the time of its
construction it was also Europe’s largest. Thanks
to its central situation in the Rhine-Main Region,
its proximity to two airports and its good motorway links, the State Capital of Rhineland-Palatinate is an interesting location for commerce and
industry, and as a congress venue.
Mainz on the Rhine is both a reality and a promise. The river is a waterway bustling with shipping
and the vital nerve of the metropolis of RhineHesse. The congress and event venues, Rhinegold
Hall and Electoral Palace, are located on its
bank alongside the baroque State Government
buildings and the modern City Hall.
Visitors sense the relaxed character of the city
during a stroll along the embankment promenade. And that at any time of the year, but best of
all from spring to autumn, when the people of
Mainz and their guests saunter along here, filling
the benches and the green open spaces, or sunbathing on the Rhine beaches. Many students
gather here, young families make use of the amenities for playing and the passengers from the
Rhine ships disembark here for a visit ashore.
They admire one of the loveliest city panoramas on
Europe’s longest river. And get an inkling of what

Wie konzentriert die beiden Mädchen arbeiten !
Ganz vorsichtig lösen sie das noch nasse Papier
aus der Druckerpresse. Sie steht im Druckladen
des Gutenberg-Museums, in dem Besucher
aus allen Ländern sehen und staunen, wie eine
geniale Erfindung vor 500 Jahren von Mainz
aus die Welt eroberte. Die Zeit Johannes Gutenbergs im 15. Jahrhundert war aber nur eine der
fruchtbaren Epochen in der Mainzer Geschichte, die immer wieder auch Reichsgeschichte
war.
Als Stadtgründer gilt der Adoptivsohn des
römischen Kaisers Augustus. Drusus legte im
Jahr 13 v. Chr. auf den Anhöhen über Rhein und
Main sein Legionslager an: Moguntiacum, das
heutige Mainz, war geboren. Die Lage, das milde
Klima und die politischen Entwicklungen des
antiken Reichs führten zu einer frühen Blüte
der Stadt. Davon legen die Ausgrabungen des
Heiligtums der Isis und Mater Magna, des römischen Bühnentheaters und zahlreiche Funde
im Stadtgebiet beredtes Zeugnis ab.
Bis in die römische Gründerzeit reichen auch
die Wurzeln der christlichen Metropole. Erste
legendäre Bischöfe gab es bereits im 2. Jahrhundert. Doch erst nach den Zeiten der Völkerwanderung war es die Lichtgestalt des Bonifatius im
8. Jahrhundert, der von Mainz aus große Teile
Deutschlands missionierte und zum größten
Erzbistum nördlich der Alpen verband.

The adoptive son of the Roman Emperor Augustus, Drusus, is regarded as being the founder of
the city. In the year 13 BC, he established his legion’s
camp on the rising ground above the confluence of
the Main and Rhine: Moguntiacum, today’s Mainz,
was born. The location, the mild climate and
political developments in the ancient empire led
to the city flourishing early. The excavations of
the shrine of Isis and Mater Magna, the Roman
theatre and numerous finds in the city area bear
eloquent witness to this.
The Christian metropolis’s roots also date back
to the early Roman period. The first legendary
bishops were already in the second century. But,
after the period of the migrations of peoples, it
was the luminous figure of Boniface in the eighth
century who converted large parts of Germany by
missionary work from Mainz, creating the largest
archbishopric to the north of the Alps.

Some two hundred years later, one of his important successors to the “Holy See of Mainz“ was
the cathedral builder and tutor to the emperor,
Willigis. The influence of the Mainz ecclesiastics
as archchancellors of the Holy Roman Empire
and organisers of the elections of the German
kings in the Middle Ages was enormous. This
finds self-confident expression in the epithet
“Golden Mainz”. This still stands for the city
on the Rhine even today.
Einer seiner bedeutenden Nachfolger auf dem
„Heiligen Stuhl von Mainz“ war rund 200 Jahre
später der Domerbauer und Kaisererzieher Willigis. Der Einfluss der Mainzer Kirchenmänner
als Erzkanzler und Leiter der deutschen Königswahlen im Mittelalter war gewaltig. Selbstbewusst kommt das im Beinamen „Goldenes
Mainz“ zum Ausdruck. Er steht noch heute für
die Rheinstadt.
Vom Mittelalter bis in das 20. Jahrhundert reichte
auch die jüdische Tradition von „Magenza“.
Vom Ruhm seiner Gelehrten künden Dichtungen und Gebete. Der Mainzer jüdische
Friedhof birgt den ältesten Grabstein Europas.
Mainzer, darunter der Universalgelehrte Georg
Forster, schrieben Geschichte auch für die
Entwicklung der deutschen Demokratie. Nach
dem Vorbild der französischen Revolutionäre
gründeten 1792 engagierte Männer einen Jakobinerklub. Der Kurfürst war bereits vor der
Revolutionsarmee aus der Stadt geflohen, die
deshalb fast kampflos dem Gegner übergeben
wurde. Der Rheinisch-Deutsche Nationalkonvent tagte im Deutschhaus und gilt als erstes
deutsches Parlament. Bis heute findet man in
der Landeshauptstadt von Rheinland-Pfalz die
Spuren von „Mayence“: in der Sprache, der
Lebensart der Bürger, in ihrer Liebe zum Wein.
Und ganz konkret im Landesmuseum, dessen
Gründung auf das Geschenk wertvoller Kunstwerke von Napoleon Bonaparte an die Bürger
der Stadt im Jahr 1805 zurückgeht.

from the Middle Ages until the twentieth century.
Poetry and prayers bear witness to the fame of
the city’s scholars. Mainz Jewish Cemetery contains Europe’s oldest gravestone. People of Mainz,
including the polymath Georg Forster, made
history, also for the development of German
democracy. In 1792, following the model of the
French revolutionaries, committed men founded
a Jacobin Club. The Elector had already fled from
the city before the revolutionary army which was
thus able to take Mainz almost without a fight.
The Rhenish-German National Convention met
in the Deutschhaus and is regarded as the first
German parliament. Even today, traces of
“Mayence” are to be found in the State Capital
of Rhineland-Palatinate: in the language, in its
inhabitants’ way of life, in their love of wine. And
in quite concrete terms in the Landesmuseum,
the founding of which has its origin in the gift of
valuable works of art by Napoleon Bonaparte to
the citizens of the city in 1805.

Eine Tänzerin, Musik, ein leerer Raum: Ballettdirektor Martin Schläpfer schafft daraus ein
Universum an Bewegung, Spannung und Imagination. Seine Tanzcompagnie ballettmainz
gehört zu den meistbeachteten Ensembles in
Deutschland. Und hat viel zum Ruf von Mainz
als Kulturstadt beigetragen.
Auch jenseits des Balletts genießt das Staatstheater Mainz als Heimat von Schauspiel,
Oper und Musik hohes Ansehen. Das Theater
mit seinem Großen Haus im Moller-Bau von
1833 und dem modernen Kleinen Haus liegt im
Zentrum der Stadt und im Herzen ihres kulturellen Lebens.
Ein weiteres Kultur-Schmuckstück ist das Landesmuseum, das nach seiner Renovierung ganz
neue Wege geht. Einst kurfürstlicher Marstall
erinnert nur noch das Goldene Ross auf dem
Dach des barocken Gebäudes an seine ursprüngliche Bedeutung. Heute beherbergt es
bedeutende Sammlungen von der Frühzeit bis
in die Moderne. Und steht in einer Reihe namhafter Museen in Mainz: das Römisch-Germanische Zentralmuseum, das Museum für Antike
Schifffahrt und das Naturhistorische Museum
mit seiner einzigartigen Tier- und Pflanzenwelt.

Martin Schläpfer turns it into a universe in movement, suspense and imagination. His dance
company balletmainz is among the most noted
ensembles in Germany. And has contributed
much to Mainz’s reputation as a cultural city.
Even beyond ballet, the State Theatre Mainz
enjoys high standin g as the home of drama,
opera and music. The theatre, with its Large
House, in the building from 1833 designed by
Georg Moller, and the modern Small House lie at
the centre of Mainz, at the heart of its cultural life.
A further cultural jewel is the Landesmuseum
which, after renovation, is going completely new
ways. Once the Electoral Stables, only the Golden Horse on the roof of the baroque building
recalls its original significance. Today it houses
major collections ranging from the early period to
the modern. And it is one of a series of noteworthy museums in Mainz: the Roman-Germanic
Central Museum, the Museum of Ancient Shipping and the Natural History Museum with its
unique fauna and flora. Touching allowed.

knüpft an Modernes an. In Landesmuseum
und Gutenberg-Museum begibt sich der Besucher auf eine Zeitreise durch die Epochen. Und
auf eine Entdeckungstour zu den großen Erfindungen und Schöpfungen der Menschheit.
Aber auch hierfür ist Mainz bekannt: Kabarett
und Kleinkunst ! Die Bühne des „unterhauses“
ist für viele Comedy-Stars das Sprungbrett zu
großen Karrieren. Sie kommen gern zurück: in
die Stadt, zu den Mainzern und ihren Besuchern.
Denn wie heißt es so schön: Lachen ist ansteckend ! Für die Mainzer ist Lachen Teil ihrer
Lebensart. Ob hoch anspruchsvoll wie beim
Mainzer Musiksommer und den Meisterkonzerten oder bodenständig-unterhaltsam, ob
experimentell, modern oder traditionsbewusst –
in Mainz haben Kunst und Kultur viele Gesichter !

History lives, the past is linked to the modern. In
the Landesmuseum and Gutenberg Museum, the
visitor goes on a journey in time through the
epochs. And on a tour of discovery to mankind’s
great inventions and creations.
But Mainz is also famous for this: Satirical revues
and cabaret ! The stage of the “unterhaus” has been
the springboard to great careers for many comedy
stars. They like to come back: to the city, to the
people of Mainz and their visitors. Because, as
the saying puts it so succinctly, laughter is infectious. For the citizens of Mainz laughter is part of
their way of life.
Whether highly discerning, such as in the Mainz
Music Summer and the master concerts, or indigenously entertaining, whether experimental,
modern or tradition-conscious – art and culture

Carnival, festivals, young life
Red, white, blue, yellow – Mainz appears in these
colours in February. And even more colourfully !
Because from “Wives’ Carnival” (the Thursday
preceding Lent) to Ash Wednesday the streets
belong to them: the jesters and revellers, the
guards and marching bands. For four mad days
they celebrate the fifth season of the year, with
Carnival meetings, urban district festivals and
masquerades. The climax: the world-famous
Carnival Monday procession through the centre
of Mainz !
Rot, weiß, blau, gelb – in diesen Farben zeigt
sich Mainz im Februar. Und noch viel bunter !
Denn von Weiberfastnacht bis Aschermittwoch
gehört die Straße ihnen: den Närrinnen und
Narrhallesen, den Garden und Spielmannszügen. Vier tolle Tage lang feiern sie die 5. Jahreszeit mit Fastnachtsitzungen, Stadtteilfesten
und Maskeraden. Höhepunkt: der weltberühmte Rosenmontagszug durch die Mainzer
Innenstadt !
Festlich geht es weiter: im Mai mit dem wichtigsten Mainzer Sportereignis, dem GutenbergMarathon, im Juni mit der Johannisnacht, dem
neben der Fastnacht größten Mainzer Volksfest. Und Ende August dann mit dem Mainzer
Weinmarkt. An den Festtagen sind im
wahrsten Sinne des Wortes alle auf den Beinen:
an den Startblöcken und an der Rennstrecke
beim Marathon, auf den Plätzen und in den
Gassen an Johanni. Inmitten von Stadtpark
und Rosengarten beim Weinmarkt.
Immer stärker behauptet sich in Mainz auch
die junge Szene. Klubs wie KUZ und Red Cat
gehören heute wie selbstverständlich zum breiten Spektrum an Ausgehmöglichkeiten. Im
Sommer sind die Rheinstrände eine besondere
Attraktion: Mit ihren Strandbars, Liegestühlen
und Hängematten sorgen sie für mediterranes
Leben mitten in Mainz.
Things continue on a festive note: in May with
the most important Mainz sporting event, the
Gutenberg Marathon, in June with St. John’s
Night Festival, the largest Mainz festival apart
from Carnival. And at the end of August then
with the Mainz Wine Fair. During the festivals,
everyone is quite literally on their feet: in the
starting-blocks and along the course for the
Marathon, in the squares and lanes for St. John’s
Festival. In the middle of the City Park and Rose
Garden for the Wine Fair.
The young scene is also asserting itself ever more
strongly in Mainz. Clubs, such as KUZ and Red
Cat, belong nowadays as a matter of course to
the wide range of places to go to. In summer, the
Rhine beaches are a special attraction: With their
strand bars, deckchairs and hammocks, they provide a feeling of Mediterranean life in the middle
of Mainz.

Stilvoll sieht es hier aus und sehr gemütlich.
Fast möchte man sich dazu setzen, zu dem
jungen Paar im Weinhaus an der Augustinerstraße. Wir stören sie nicht – obwohl das
Dazusetzen in Mainzer Weinstuben eine lange
Tradition hat. Denn hier rückt man gern zusammen, fachsimpelt über den Wein im Glas oder
tauscht sich aus über die neuesten „Meenzer
Geschichtscher“.
Mainz ist die Wein-Hauptstadt Deutschlands.
Nirgendwo sonst gibt es so viele Weinhäuser,
Winzerhöfe, Weinfeste und Weinverkostungen
wie in und um Mainz. Eingebettet zwischen
zwei der namhaftesten Weinregionen Deutschlands, dem Rheingau im Norden und Rheinhessen im Süden, ist die Stadt idealer Ausgangspunkt für Winzertouren, Weinwanderungen
und kulinarische Entdeckungsreisen.
Wahre Schätze bergen die Mainzer Sektkellereien Kupferberg und Goldhand in ihren historischen Fasskellern. Die ältesten Kelleranlagen
sind noch römischen Ursprungs. Sie erinnern
daran, dass es einst Römer waren, die vor
2000 Jahren hier am Rhein die ersten Reben
setzten. Seitdem hat sich in Mainz die Liebe
zum köstlichen Traubensaft entwickelt wie in
kaum einer anderen deutschen Stadt. Überall
laden gemütliche Weinstuben zum Einkehren:

others has a long tradition in Mainz wine taverns.
Because here people like moving closer together,
talking shop over a glass of wine or swapping the
latest Mainz gossip.
Mainz is Germany’s wine capital. Nowhere else
are there so many wine taverns, winegrowers’
estates, wine festivals and wine-tastings as in
and around Mainz. Embedded between two of
Germany’s most renowned wine regions, the
Rheingau to the north and Rhine-Hesse to the
south, the city is an ideal starting point for tours
of winegrowers, wine rambles and culinary expeditions.
The Mainz producers of sparkling wine, Sekt,
Kupferberg and Goldhand, hold veritable treasures
in their barrel cellars. The oldest parts of the cellars
are of Roman origin. They recall the fact that it
was the Romans who once planted the first vines
here by the Rhine 2000 years ago. Since then, the
love for the delicious juice of the grape has developed as in hardly any other German city. Everywhere, snug wine taverns invite you to stop by:

Weit schweift der Blick über Weinreben und
sanfte Hügel. Sie prägen die Landschaft von
Rheinhessen. Mit über 26.000 Hektar Rebfläche ist die Region im Dreieck von Mainz,
Bingen und Worms das größte Weinanbaugebiet Deutschlands.
Bei den rheinhessischen Winzerfamilien vererbt sich der Beruf des Weinbauers oft von
Generation zu Generation. Doch was heißt
„Beruf“ ? Passion trifft es wohl eher, dieses

wachsen in der Gegend um Nackenheim, Nierstein und Oppenheim. Und einen Namen weit
über die Landesgrenzen hinaus hat sich Ingelheim als Hochburg des Rotweins erworben.
Nun muss, wer die Weine Rheinhessens probieren möchte, nicht unbedingt über Land
fahren. Auch wenn es sich lohnt ! Denn einmal
im Jahr kommen die Winzer aus dem Umland
zum Mainzer Weinmarkt in die Stadt und bringen
ihre köstlichen Erzeugnisse mit. Am letzten
August- und ersten Septemberwochenende
kann dann nach Herzenslust verkostet werden.
Das Besondere: der beliebte Wein-Treffpunkt
findet – sehr romantisch – im Schatten alter
Bäume in Volkspark und Rosengarten statt.
The view extends far across the vineyards and
gently rolling hills. They shape the landscape of
Rhine-Hesse. With over 26,000 hectares of vines,
the region in the triangle of Mainz, Bingen and
Worms is Germany’s largest wine-growing area.
In the wine-growing families in Rhine-Hesse, the
trade of winegrower is often passed on from generation to generation. But what does ’trade’
mean ? Passion is probably more correct for the
winegrower’s special relationship to his wines.
He has something to offer for every taste and
every purse, whether Riesling, Silvaner, Burgunder or Portugieser, whether dry, semi-dry or medium-sweet wines. Some of Germany’s finest Rieslings grow in the region around Nackenheim,
Nierstein and Oppenheim. And Ingelheim has
made a name for itself far beyond the state
boundaries as a red wine stronghold.
Now anyone wanting to sample the wines of
Rhine-Hesse does not necessarily have to travel
across the countryside. Even if it is well worth
doing so. Because, once a year, the winegrowers
from the surrounding region come into the city
to the Mainz Wine Fair, bringing their delicious
products with them. On the last weekend in August and first one in September, it is then possible
to sample to one’s heart’s content. The special
feature: the popular wine rendezvous takes place,
very romantically, in the shade of the trees in the
Volkspark and Rose Garden.

in der Region. Denn jetzt beginnt der Herbst,
in Rheinhessen gleichbedeutend mit der Weinlese: Für Gäste eine besonders stimmungsvolle
Zeit, um Land und Leute kennen zu lernen. Doch
keine Sorge: Weinerleben hat in Mainz immer
Saison ! Viele Vinotheken und Gasthäuser der
Altstadt haben sich auf Weine aus der Region
spezialisiert. Bei ihnen lassen sich verschiedene Anbieter, Jahrgänge, Trauben und Lagen
hervorragend vergleichen. Schönes und Nützliches rund um den Weingenuss gibt es in den
Mainzer Geschäften zu kaufen – als Mitbringsel oder zur Erinnerung an eine Stadt, für die

wine culture are inseparably linked together.

Otto von Bismarck, sonst nicht gerade bekannt
für seine romantische Ader, schrieb von Schloss
Johannisberg an seine Frau „Hier mag ich verweilen, denn hier darf man träumen.“
On the opposite side of the Rhine there is a small,
but important wine-growing area for connoisseurs:
the Rhinegau. Famous Rhinegau estates, such as
Eberbach Monastery, Johannisberg Castle and
Vollrads Castle are just a stone’s throw away from
Mainz. Goethe already liked to sojourn in this
region, enjoying the wonderful view across the
Rhine valley in addition to the wines. And even
Otto von Bismarck, not otherwise exactly known
for his romantic streak, wrote to his wife from
Johannisberg Castle: “I like to tarry here awhile,
because here you may dream.”

„Ich habe keine Zeit, um mich zur Ruhe zu
setzen.“ Fast provokant klangen die Worte von
Paul Crutzen anlässlich seines 70. Geburtstags.
Doch der Nobelpreisträger für Chemie, der
zwei Jahrzehnte lang, von 1980 bis 2000, am
Max-Planck-Institut in Mainz lehrte, ist einfach
nicht zu bremsen. Und auch damit ein Vorbild
für die Studierenden und Nachwuchswissenschaftler, die heute am renommierten Mainzer
Institut forschen. Zwei von ihnen – die beiden
Chemikerinnen auf dem großen Foto – haben
wir ein Stück auf ihrem Gang durch das Institut
begleitet. Und einen lebhaften Eindruck von
der Forschungsvielfalt in Mainz bekommen.
Das Max-Planck-Institut ist Teil der Johannes
Gutenberg-Universität. Sie ist mit rund 35.000
Studierenden die größte Hochschule in Rheinland-Pfalz. Zusammen mit den Universitätskliniken, den Forschungseinrichtungen und Fachhochschulen trägt sie wesentlich zum Ruf von
Mainz als Wissenschafts- und Forschungsstandort bei.
Viele der hier ausgebildeten Menschen zieht
es nicht mehr weg. Denn Mainz – so schrieb
das „Handelsblatt“ in seinem Städteranking –
„gehört wirtschaftlich zu den dynamischsten
Regionen Deutschlands. Wegen der hohen
Lebensqualität bleiben Jungakademiker nach
dem Studium oft in der Stadt hängen.
“I’ve got no time to retire”. Paul Crutzen’s words
on the occasion of his 70th birthday sounded almost provocative. But there’s simply no stopping
the Nobel prize winner for Chemistry, who taught
at the Max Planck Institute in Mainz for two decades, from 1980 to 2000. And thus also a model
for the students and young scientists researching
today at the renowned Mainz institute. We accompanied two of them – the two chemists in the
large photo – a little on their way through the
institute. And gained a vivid impression of the
wide variety of research conducted in Mainz.
The Max Planck Institute is part of the Johannes
Gutenberg University. With some 35,000 students, this is the largest university in RhinelandPalatinate. Together with the University Clinical
Centre, the research institutions and technical
colleges it contributes considerably towards
Mainz’s reputation as a science and research
location.
Many of the people educated here do not want to
move away any more. Because Mainz – as the
“Handelsblatt” wrote in its city ranking – “belongs economically to Germany’s most dynamic
region. Because of the high quality of life, young
academics often remain in the city after their
studies.
Wäre Mainz keine Stadt, sondern ein Unternehmen, würden es Analysten als ‚stark diversifiziert’ beschreiben.“ Stark diversifiziert – hinter
dem abstrakt klingenden Begriff verbirgt sich
ein großes Kompliment. Denn in der Tat hat

Menge zu bieten.
Da ist die Medienbranche mit Europas größtem
Sendezentrum, dem ZDF auf dem Lerchenberg,
mit dem Südwestdeutschen Rundfunk, RPR
und Rockland Radio. Mit zwei Tageszeitungen
und den traditionsreichen Verlagen Philip von
Zabern und Schott Musik International. Da
sind die bedeutenden Unternehmen Siemens,
Schott Glas, Nestlé, Wepa Papierfabrik und
Werner und Mertz, die in Mainz ihren Sitz
haben. Und da ist ein aktiver Mittelstand, der
einen wichtigen Teil zum Wirtschaftsstandort
Mainz beiträgt. Sie alle profitieren von Lage,
Leistungskraft und Lebensqualität der Stadt
inmitten der pulsierenden Wirtschaftsregion
Rhein-Main. Keine 20 Kilometer liegt der
Frankfurter Flughafen entfernt. Der Containerhafen in Mainz profitiert von der Anbindung an
die großen Wasserstraßen. Und das Autobahnund Schienennetz ist fast nirgendwo sonst in
Deutschland so gut ausgebaut wie in RheinMain.

There is the media branch, with Europe’s largest
broadcasting centre, that of Second German
Television, ZDF, on Lerchenberg, with Southwest
German Radio, SWR, RPR and Rockland Radio.
With two daily newspapers and the publishing
houses Philip von Zabern and Schott Music International with their rich traditions. There are the
major undertakings Siemens, Schott Glas, Nestlé,
Wepa Papierfabrik and Werner and Mertz, which
are based in Mainz. And there are active medium-sized companies which make an important
contribution to Mainz as a business location. They
all profit from the location, productivity and quality of life of the city in the middle of the pulsating
economic region Rhine-Main. Frankfurt Airport
is no 20 kilometres distant. The container port in
Mainz benefits from its connection to the main
inland waterways. And the motorway and railway network is almost nowhere else in Germany
so well developed as in Rhine-Main.

Großes Augenmerk wird in Mainz auf die Zukunft gerichtet – und auf neue qualifizierte
Arbeitsplätze. Eine Vorreiterrolle spielt hier das
TechnologieZentrum Mainz, eine Einrichtung
von Stadt und Land. Sie unterstützt Existenzgründer aus dem technologischen und biotechnologischen Bereich von der Gründungsidee
bis zum Geschäftsaufbau. Und das nicht nur
beratend, sondern auch mit eigenen Büros,
Werkstätten und Laboren.
Viel Potenzial braucht Raum. Für Flächenausbau und Stadtentwicklung ist die Grundstücksverwaltungsgesellschaft (GVG) der Stadt Mainz
zuständig. Sie legt das Fundament für die Gewerbe- und Wirtschaftsansiedlung. Und für

Auch immer mehr Kongress- und Tagungsveranstalter entscheiden sich für Mainz. Sie finden

Great attention is directed to the future in Mainz –
and to new qualified jobs. The Technology Centre
Mainz, an institution backed by the City and the
State, leads the way here. It supports those founding new businesses from the technological and
biotechnological sector, from the idea of founding
to the build-up of business. And that not only
with advice, but also with their own offices, workshops and laboratories.
Great potential needs space. The City of Mainz’s
property management company GVG is responsible for the expansion of space and urban development. It lays the foundation for the establishment
of trade and industry. And for a strong labour
market.
More and more congress and conference organisers are also deciding on Mainz. They find a rich
selection of different locations in the State Capital. Since its extension, the Rhinegold Hall of the
Congress Centrum Mainz radiates in new splendour and presents itself technically at the highest
level. The new structure accommodates the 1000square-metre large Gutenberg Hall with room for
more than 1,300 persons and equipped with an
abundance of technical and acoustic refinements.

The Phönix Hall in Mainz-Mombach is a location

bunch of roses in her hand seems to be thinking.
What might the scent remind her of ? That will
probably remain her secret. But probably everyone who has already ever been here will know this
special feeling of strolling around the Mainz weekly
market on a glorious summer day. The market in
front of the impressive backdrop of St. Martin’s
Cathedral is one of the loveliest in Germany. And
not only the people of Mainz think so !
„Wie das duftet !“, scheint die junge Frau mit dem
Rosenstrauß in der Hand zu denken. Woran mag
sie der Duft erinnern ? Das bleibt wohl ihr Geheimnis. Aber dieses besondere Gefühl, an einem

Brand or at elegant Schillerplatz.
Ausgedehnte Fußgängerzonen, schöne Plätze
und die Ruheoasen direkt am Rhein machen das
Einkaufen in Mainz auch zu einem Familienvergnügen. Und nicht nur das Einkaufen ! Mainz ist

Was für ein Blick ! Von der Glaskuppel des Staatstheaters genießen Besucher des „Mollers“ eine
herrliche Aussicht auf den Mainzer Dom. Besonders romantisch wirkt er abends, wenn er
hell angestrahlt durch die großen Fenster des
Restaurants im Moller-Bau lugt. Doch auch
tagsüber ist der Dom Hauptanziehungspunkt
für Touristen aus aller Welt. Schließlich sieht er
nicht nur eindrucksvoll aus, sondern gehört
auch zu den wichtigsten romanischen Bauwerken Deutschlands.

a great role in the city. Hip clubs and elegant restaurants, a lively pub scene and several discotheques ensure that Mainz enjoys a high entertainment value, particularly also among young
people. They appreciate the urbanity of the region,
the big-city life in the State Capital and, not least,
Mainz’s unique location directly by the river.
Dieses Leben am Fluss prägt das Lebensgefühl
der Mainzer ganz entscheidend. Um das zu erfahren, muss man nur einmal an einem warmen
Tag am Rheinufer entlang spazieren. Dann sind
hier Jogger und Radfahrer, Inlineskater und
Spaziergänger unterwegs. Auf den Wiesen am
Ufer treffen sich die Sonnenanbeter, Grillfreunde
und Picknick-Fans. In den Strandbars der alljährlich in den Sommermonaten aufgeschütteten
Rheinstrände herrscht derweil ausgelassene
Stimmung.
