Prehistor y and background
In Deutschland zählen Rückenschmerzen – besonders bei sitzend Beschäftigten – zu den häufigsten Beschwerden und ziehen krankheitsbedingte
Arbeitsausfälle nach sich. Im Jahr 2005 entfielen
die meisten Ausfalltage auf Muskel- und Skeletterkrankungen. Die Ursachen basieren auf falscher
Gestaltung des Arbeitsplatzes bzw. in ungünstiger
Anordnung der Arbeitsmittel. Diese andauernde körperliche Zwangshaltung zieht Muskelverspannungen
nach sich, Gelenke und Bandscheiben werden einseitig belastet.
In Germany, back pain – particularly among those
employees who work in a seated position – is one
of the most common problems and is a cause of
illness-related absence from work. In 2005, most
cases of absence from work could be attributed to
muscular and skeletal illnesses. Such illnesses are
caused by incorrect workplace design or by having
work equipment arranged incorrectly. This constant
forced physical posture gives rise to muscular tension, with joints and intervertebral discs being subjected to one-sided strain.

Woran liegt das?
Die Ursache liegt vielfach in der falschen Gestaltung des Arbeitsplatzes oder in einer ungünstigen Anordnung der einzelnen Arbeitsmittel. Daraus resultieren Körperzwangshaltungen
mit den bekannten Folgen wie Muskelverspannungen und einseitigen Belastungen von Gelenken und Bandscheiben.
Um dem entgegenzuwirken ist es wichtig, den richtigen Arbeitsstuhl auszuwählen.
Why do such illnesses occur?
These illnesses are frequently caused by incorrect workplace
design or by having individual pieces of work equipment
arranged incorrectly. This leads to forced physical postures
with the familiar consequences such as muscular tension
and one-sided strain being placed on joints and intervertebral discs.

Ten tips for healthy sitting
01. Füße immer vollflächig auf den Boden stellen.
02. Grundsätzlich Rückenlehnenkontakt halten.
03. Sitzhaltung korrigieren, wenn Sie im Sitz nach vorne
rutschen.
04. Starke seitliche Neigungen beim Sitzen vermeiden.
05. Zu bodennahen Gegenständen nur über die Beine nach
vorne beugen.
06. Beine in vorderer Sitzhaltung nicht übereinander schlagen.
07. So oft wie möglich dynamisch aktiv sitzen.
08. Aufrechte Sitzhaltung zwischendurch ohne Rückenlehne trainieren, sofern eine automatische Sitzneigeverstellung nach
vorne vorhanden ist.
09. Beim Aufstehen und Hinsetzen den Schwerpunkt des gestreckten Oberkörpers immer zuerst über die Knie bringen.
10. Regelmäßig Bewegungsübungen am Arbeitsplatz durchführen.

04. Avoid strongly tilting the body to the side when sitting.
05. When bending down to reach objects near the floor, do
so only in a forward direction over the legs.
06. Do not cross your legs while sitting in a forward seated
posture.
07. Sit in a dynamic activating manner as often as possible.
08. If your chair is equipped with an automatic forward seat tilt
adjustment feature, practice maintaining an upright seated
posture without the help of the backrest from time to time.
09. When standing up and sitting down, always bring the centre
of gravity of your stretched upper body over your knees first.
10. Carry out regular movement exercises at your workplace.

An t i s t a t i s c h
Antistatisch beschreibt die Fähigkeit eines Materials, sich nicht elektrostatisch aufzuladen
oder zumindest diese Aufladung zu behindern. Die Hauptursache für eine elektrostatische
Aufladung ist der Mensch selbst. Eine elektrostatische Aufladung entsteht durch Reibung
an Kunststoffen (z.B. bei Stoffen aus Kunstfasern). Physikalisch gesehen lädt sich dabei
ein Par t negativ (-), der Gegenpart positiv (+) auf. Dieses Ungleichgewicht wird in der Regel kompensier t durch die Umgebungsluft oder kann durch die Berührung eines elektrisch
leitfähigen Gegenstandes (Türklinken, metallische bzw. leitfähige Materialien) abfließen.
Bei ungünstigen Partnern können sehr hohe Spannungen von 15.000 bis 30.000 Volt entstehen. Da diese mit nur
geringer Ladungsenergie (Stromstärken) gekoppelt sind, ist das Gefährdungspotential jedoch relativ gering.

Begünstigt wird die Neigung sich elektrisch aufzuladen durch einen hohen Kunststoffanteil in
Stoffen und am Produkt, sowie bei zu geringen Luftfeuchtigkeiten von ca. 30-40% (ideal
sind 50-60%, beispielsweise während der Wintermonate). Abhilfe schaffen eingewebte
Metallfäden, Kohlefasern oder die Ausrüstung des Stoffes mit feuchtigkeitsaufnehmenden
(hydrophilen) Präparaten (Anti-Elektrostatika). Diese verbessern aufgrund Ihrer Leitfähigkeit oder feuchtigkeitsaufnehmenden Ausrüstung die Abgabe entstehender Spannungen an
die Umgebungsluft.
Antistatisch ausgerüstete Stühle sind nicht leitfähig, sondern vermindern oder verhindern lediglich die Neigung sich
statisch aufzuladen.

Leitfähigkeit beschreibt die Fähigkeit elektrische Ströme zu leiten. Die Anforderungen
an die Leitfähigkeit von Büro- und Arbeitsdrehstühlen sind in der DIN EN 61340-5 Teil 1
geregelt (in einigen Unterlagen wird die Vorgänger-DIN EN 100 015 noch erwähnt, welche
jedoch durch die DIN EN 61340 ersetzt wurde). Gemessen wird dabei der Oberflächenwiderstand, der Ableitwiderstand, der Durchgangswiderstand sowie die Spannungsabfallcharakteristik. Die Wer te werden ermittelt zwischen der Rückenlehne, der Sitzfläche und der
Armlehne, jeweils zum Bodenbelag. Um die Spannung abzuleiten ist es zudem erforderlich,
folgende leitfähige Komponenten auf elektrisch leitfähigen Fußböden zu verwenden: Gasfedern, Fußkreuze und Rollen.
EGB/ESD
Üblicherweise sind leitfähige Bürodrehstühle oder Arbeitsstühle bei Arbeiten EGB mit hochsensiblen elektrostatisch gefährdeten Bauteilen (EGB), z. B. in der Mikrochip-Fertigung,
erforderlich, um eine Zerstörung der Bauelemente durch ESD elektrostatische Entladungen
(ESD = electrostatic discharge) zu vermeiden. Um die Leitfähigkeit sicherzustellen,
muss der Bodenbelag, auf dem der Stuhl zum Einsatz kommt, leitfähig ausgestattet sein,
da sonst die Spannung nicht abfließen kann.

Klasse 4 nach DIN EN ISO 14644-1 entspricht der ehemals gültigen US Federal Standard
209 E/Class 10.

Antistatic
Antistatic refers to the ability of a material not to become electrostatically charged or
at least to hinder such charging. Human beings themselves are the main cause of electrostatic charging. Electrostatic charging occurs as a result of friction between plastics
(e.g. in materials made of artificial fibres). In physical terms, one part is given a negative
charge (-) and its counterpart a positive charge (+). This imbalance is usually compensated for by the ambient air or can flow away through contact with an electrically conductive object (door handles, metallic or conductive materials).
Where there are unfavourable combinations, very high voltages from 15,000 to 30,000 volts can result. However,
the potential danger is relatively low because these voltages have a low charge energy (electric current).
Air humidity

The tendency for electrical charges to form is encouraged by a high proportion of plastics in fabrics and in the product as well as by insufficient air humidity of around 30-40%
(50-60% is ideal, during the winter months for example). This problem can be remedied
by weaving metallic threads or carbon fibres into the fabric or by treating the fabric with
moisture-absorbent (hydrophilic) preparations (anti-electrostatic agents). Owing to their
conductivity or moisture-absorbent abilities, these promote the dissipation of generated
voltages into the ambient air.
Chairs with antistatic features are not conductive. They merely reduce or prevent the tendency to become statically
charged.
Conductivity/

Conductivity refers to the ability to conduct electric currents. The requirements in respect of the conductivity of office and work swivel chairs are regulated by DIN EN 61340-5
Part 1 (the earlier DIN EN 100 015 is still mentioned in some documents but this was replaced by DIN EN 61340). The surface resistance, the dissipation resistance, the volume
resistance and the voltage drop characteristic are measured in the process. The values
are determined between the backrest, the seat surface and the armrest, in each case with
respect to the floor covering. In order to dissipate the voltage, it is also necessary to use
the following conductive components on electrically conductive floors: gas struts, bases
and castors.
ESDS/ESD
Conductive office swivel chairs or work chairs are usually necessary when working with
highly delicate, electrostatic-discharge-sensitive components (ESDS), e.g. in microchip
production, in order to prevent the components being destroyed by electrostatic discharges (ESD). In order to ensure this conductivity, the floor covering on which the chair is
used must also be conductive, otherwise the voltage cannot be dissipated.

Class 4
Class 4 in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14644-1 corresponds to the previously valid US
Federal Standard 209 E/Class 10.
