Kontakt venligst Internationale Relationer på SDU for at få me‐ re at vide herom. Du kan også finde flere oplysninger om ophold i udlandet på vores hjemmeside: www.sdu.dk/detinternationalekontor 5 Practical information On the following pages, you can read about your possibilities for going abroad, and how to apply for an exchange place. Please read these pages before you make your application. Studying abroad – your possibilities There are many opportunities for studying abroad – dependent upon your wishes, needs and economic situation. The immediate opportunity for going abroad is through exchange agreements. Exchanges imply that two universities opt to swap students for a short period and thus do not charge each other’s students tuition fees. Of course, you also have the possibility to arrange your stay outside the framework of exchange programmes. However, in that case you will have to pay the tuition fees to the host institution yourself. ► Overseas exchange If you want to study outside Europe, you can apply for one of our overseas places. If you are nominated for overseas exchange, you will receive a travel grant from the university’s Internationalization Fund. Please note that most overseas exchange places are awarded in the application round of 1 November. Therefore, you will only find a few remaining places in the round of 1 March. These are announced sep‐ arately on our web page. Along certain overseas agreements, the possibility of ‘Study Abroad’ is mentioned. This entails that SDU students are eligible for a discount if they choose to study at that university as a fee‐paying guest stu‐ dent. ‘Study Abroad’ might be a possibility if you do not get the ‘free’ exchange place but are willing to pay to attend a particular university. ► Nordic exchange The Nordic countries cooperate closely within education, and there are many possibilities for exchange within the so‐called Nordplus programme. Nordplus is an umbrella network for a number of small sub‐ ject‐oriented networks. In the back of this booklet, you can see the networks that SDU takes part in. Students who study within the Nordplus framework are provided with a travel grant. ► Individually arranged stays If you want to study in a particular country or university with which SDU does not cooperate, you can ar‐ range a study abroad period yourself. In that case, you are not considered an exchange student, and you must take care of contact, application and enrolment to the particular university yourself. In addition, you should note that you most likely would have to pay tuition fees to that university. If you receive SU, you can apply for funds through the ‘udlandsstipendieordning’ to cover your tuition fees. If you are not eligible for ‘udlandsstipendie’, you can apply for a grant from the Internationalization Fund. Some of our overseas partners offer a discount to SDU students on individually arranged stays. These are listet in the section ‘study abroad’. If you are planning an individually arranged stay at one of our partner universities not listed in the ‘study abroad’ section, please remember to point out that you are from SDU. Maybe you will be entitled to a discount that we are not familiar with. Internships abroad – your possibilities More and more students opt to do an internship abroad, either as a mandatory part of their studies or to replace an elective. An internship in another country is a good chance for you to get both work experience and international quali‐ fications at the same time. If you get credits for your internship, you can apply for a grant through the International Office. ► Internships / traineeships If you choose to do an internship from outside the framework of Erasmus+ (e.g. at an embassy), you can apply for a travel grant from the university’s Internationalization Fund (see later in this booklet). The in‐ ternship must be pre‐approved by your study board. How to use this booklet The list of exchange places abroad is primarily sorted by country and then university. 6 ► Area of study Just below the partner institution, you can see the type of degrees for which the exchange place is suit‐ ed. With certain places, the target group is all areas of study at a particular faculty, but often the place is intended for specific areas of study. This does not necessarily imply that students of other kinds of de‐ grees cannot apply for the place. If so, you must choose subjects within the given area, however. Stu‐ dents from the mentioned area of study have first priority to the exchange place. ► Number of places, duration and level In the next column you can see the number and duration of the study places that are offered. In most cases, the duration is one semester, but sometimes it might say ‘full academic year’. Typically this means that both a single semester and a full academic year is possible. In the end, the duration of the courses at the partner university is decisive. Be aware that the semesters abroad do not necessarily follow the same dates as SDU. In some countries the spring semester begins already in January, and this might be a problem if you have to take exams at SDU. You cannot expect to be able to arrive after the semester begins, so it is important that you check when the semester begins before you apply for a study place in the spring. Please note that the places are marked ‘graduate’ or ‘undergraduate’. If you are studying at bachelor’s level at SDU, you can only apply for places that are marked ‘undergraduate’. If you are studying at mas‐ ter’s level, you should look primarily for ‘graduate’ places. In case you apply for overseas exchange at graduate level, you have to be aware that some universities in e.g. the United States, Canada and Aus‐ tralia require that you have already passed your BA when you apply. These universities are not able to admit you if you earn your BA just prior to beginning your stay abroad. For more information about this, please contact the International Office. ► Language of instruction and other comments If nothing is mentioned, you can assume that the language of instruction is the mother tongue of the country in question. However, most universities today offer courses in English, so we will strongly advise you to check the university’s homepage for further information. Application procedure – how to do it Often it can be a quite long and dilatory process to go abroad, but as soon as the adventure begins, most students forget about all the previous troubles. Even though the exchange places are offered by SDU, you are still the one to take initiative and make sure that the exchange happens. Below you can see how to go about it step by step. ► Prepare carefully Use this booklet to find out what your possibilities are in relation to your degree, your language abilities and your wanderlust. Then search for more information about the universities that might be interesting for you. Use the homepages of the universities (find the links on our webpage), and drop by Internation‐ al Relations to borrow brochures or student reports from the relevant universities. Our experience tells us that the hardest part for the students is finding courses, so you need to be thorough when you do your research. Please be aware that it might not be possible for you to find updated information on course offerings, however. Sometimes you may need to settle for information about courses from pre‐ vious semesters alone. ► Apply for the exchange place or for a grant Once you have decided on a host university abroad, you have to fill out our digital application form on our webpage. The application can only be filled in online. If you choose to arrange a stay abroad individually or want to do an internship, you have to fill out the relevant forms which can be found on our webpage. 7 ► Wait for nomination When the application deadline expires, we begin to consider all applications. If there are more appli‐ cants for the same place, we prioritize according to criteria agreed upon with each faculty. Primarily, the average grade will decide whom we nominate. Please note that the host institution may require a cer‐ tain grade average for you to get the place, so just because you might get the exchange place ‐ it doesn't automatically follow that you will be admitted to the host institution. Other factors may also be decisive, such as the number of passed exams and ECTS. With some exchange agreements, it is stated that the places should be distributed in a particular way between the faculties. Usually it is possible to be flexible when distributing the places, so that most applicants receive an exchange place. ► Put together a study programme If you have been nominated to an exchange place, you need to put together a study programme. The basic concept is to find information about the subjects you want to study abroad and then put them to‐ gether as a study programme that can replace a number of courses that you have to take at SDU. You will need to find course descriptions as well as information about the number of credits for each course. If you are in doubt, you should contact you academic student advisor (faglig vejleder). ► Apply for pre‐approval from your study board When you have been awarded an exchange place, you will need to have your proposed study pro‐ gramme approved by your study board. Send the study programme pertaining to your exchange place to your study board together with course descriptions. Each study board may have different rules that you need to be aware of. ► Apply for admission to the host university Once your study programme has been approved by your study board, you are ready to apply for admis‐ sion at the host university. International Relations has nominated you, and typically you receive an email from the host university. The email from the host university will inform you about their application pro‐ cedures. In case you do not hear anything, do not assume that everything is fine. Some universities ex‐ pect you to follow their online application guidelines, so it is important that you are active in this pro‐ cess. When in doubt ‐ contact International Relations here at SDU. Final acceptance should always come from the host institution. Later you will receive information about the grant from Internationalization Fund ‐ when applying for exchange, you automatically apply for a grant, too. More information? If you have any questions in connection with your application or the exchange places, you are always welcome to con‐ tact us. You can find more information about going abroad on our webpage: www.sdu.dk/detinternationalekontor 8 Contact information For yderligere information / For further information please contact: Internationale Relationer / International Relations: Personlige henvendelser skal ske i Studenterservice Personal inquiries through Student Service ELLER RING TIL +45 6550 2264 ML 10 OG 14 PÅ HVERDAGE /OR CALL +45 6550 2264 BETWEEN 10 AND 14 ON WEEKDAYS ELLER SEND EN MAIL TIL / OR SEND AN EMAIL TO: [email protected] 9 Ansøgningsfrister / application deadlines Ansøgningsfrist / 1. nov. 2014 1 Nov. 2014 1. mar. 2015 1 March 2015 1. okt. 2015 1 Oct. 2015 Andre frister Other deadlines Erasmus pladser Erasmus exchange Studieophold i 2015/2016 Exchange in 2015/2016 Restpladser i foråret 2016 Remaining pla‐ ces in spring 2016 Erasmus praktik Erasmus placement Nordplus Nordic exchange Nordliks Nordic literature ex‐ change Oversøiske pladser Overseas exchange Application dead‐ line: Programtype / Type of exchange Studieophold i 2015/2016 Exchange in 2015/2016 Restpladser i foråret 2016 Remaining pla‐ ces in spring 2016 Studieophold i 2015/2016 Exchange in 2015/2016 Løbende så længe midler haves / ongoing as long as funds are available 1. mar. / 1. okt. 1 Mar. / 1 Oct. Internationaliserings‐ puljen Internationalization Fund Udlandsstipendieordnin‐ gen (ansøges gennem SU Kontoret) Løbende så længe midler haves / ongoing as long as funds are available Løbende, men inden afslutnin‐ gen på opholdet / ongoing but before the study period ends 10 Oversøiske udvekslingspladser ‐ værd at vide De oversøiske udvekslingspladser gælder ofte flere forskellige studieretninger, og derfor vil der ofte være mange studerende, der søger pladserne. 2 års studier forud for opholdet. Du kan enten: søge en restplads søge en europæisk plads i forårsrunden rejse som study abroad mod betaling lave et selvarrangeret ophold 11 Overseas exchange places – good to know Overseas exchange places are often offered to several different areas of study, which means that there will often be many applicants. It is therefore recommended that you apply for more than just one place and that you do not only apply for the most attractive places places, e.g. California, Hawaii and Florida. ► Grade average When the eligible applicants are chosen, that is, students with a relevant study programme approved by their study board, the places are allocated according to grade average. Many of our overseas partners have strict minimum requirements for exchange students. Often there will be a minimum grade average simply to be considered for the place. In addition, many universities require that students have completed min. two years of university studies before the exchange period. ► Our decision Before Christmas you will receive an answer to your application. ► Admission requirements After you have been awarded an exchange places, you will need to apply for admission at the host uni‐ versity. You will need to spend time obtaining the necessary documents, insurance, language test, visa etc. It is a good idea to go through the host university’s admission requirements before you apply for the exchange place. Since the universities often change their admission requirements, it is not possible to include them in this booklet. You will need to check their websites. If we have information about lan‐ guage tests or other specific requirements, we have included it in the right column. However, you can‐ not assume that no information about language tests means that you are exempt from taking it. If you get an exchange place you will not have to pay for tuition. However, you will still need to pay liv‐ ing expenses, insurance, travel, books etc. You will need to prove that you have sufficient funds in ad‐ vance in order to be admitted to the host university. Documentation could be, e.g. Danish SU, a bank statement, support from parents, grants etc. If you do not receive SU, you will – when you apply for the exchange place – need to prove that you have suffiecient funds at your disposal each month during the period abroad (generally around 5000 DKK a month). All students winning an exchange place will automatically receive a travel grant from SDU’s Internation‐ alization Fund. This grant will typically be able to cover a round‐way fare to the host country, but you will most likely have to pay yourself initially. ► If I don’t get a place... ... don’t give up! There are still many possibilities left for going abroad: apply for remaining places apply for a European exchange place in the upcoming round use a study abroad agreement do an individually‐arranged stay 12 Overseas exchange 2015/2016 Australia Gri th University Id:3015 Engineering (TEK), Humani es 6 place(s) undergraduate / graduate (HUM), Science (NAT), Social Sciences (SAMF), Health Sciences (SUND) James Cook University Min. 1 year of studies completed. 25 Individually‐arranged stays – good to know Do you want to study in a particular country or at a university with which SDU does not cooperate? If so, you can arrange a study abroad period on your own, and if you receive SU, you may also be eligible for funding through the Udlandsstipendieordning. ► Financial considerations You will not be considered an exchange student, and you must take care of contact, application and en‐ rolment to the particular university yourself. In addition, you should note that you most likely would have to pay tuition fees to the host university. You can apply for a travel grant through the university’s Internationalization Fund, and if you receive SU, you can apply for funds through the ‘udlandsstipendieordning’ as a contribution to the tuition fees. If you do not have to pay tuition or if you do not receive ‘udlandsstipendie’, you can apply for a small grant from the SDU’s own Internationalization Fund. Some of our overseas partners offer a discount to SDU students on individually arranged stays. These are listed in the section ‘study abroad’ in our lists of exchange places. If you apply to one of our partner universities, you should always contact the International Office first. Different companies in Denmark can help you arrange a study abroad period at a university in e.g. the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. It is free to receive their help since they receive com‐ mission from the host university in case you get admitted: EDU Danmark: www.edu‐danmark.dk Kilroy Education: www.kilroyeducaiton.dk ► Application deadline With individually‐arranged stays, the most important deadline is the ones at the host university. If you apply through one of our study abroad agreements, you will need to follow the same deadline as with the regular exchange places. Make sure you begin well in advance due to the number of different things to sort out, e.g. finances, language test, admission, insurance etc. Please note – on our webpage: www.sdu.dk/detinternationalekontor you can download a form with an overview of the different things you need to know and arrange in relation to individually‐arranged stays. 27 Study Abroad – individually arranged stays with dis‐ count SDU has signed a few special agreements with universities abroad giving you the possibility to study at the host University for 1 or 2 semesters by paying tuition. The fees are however, typi‐ cally lower than usual individually arranged stays. In addition, SDU has ongoing correspondence with the host university and will be able to help you in the process. Your stay must be pre‐approved by your study board. You can apply for the study abroad place the same way as with regular overseas exchange places. Study abroad agreements: James Cook University, Australia Swinburne University of Technology University of Northern British Columbia, Cana‐ da This agreement also exists as an exchange agreement, so initially you should apply for the exchange place. In case you don’t get it, you still have the possibility to study abroad by paying tuition fees. Our agree‐ ment provides you with a 15% discount on these fees. The agreement is open to almost all areas of study. This agreement also exists as an exchange agreement, so initially you should apply for the exchange place. In case you don’t get it, you still have the possibility to study abroad by paying tuition fees. In 2014 the tuition fee is 9400 A$ per semester Exchange is also possible, but the price for study abroad is very reasona‐ ble. If you receive Danish SU and you are eligible for ’udlandsdsstipendie’, the tuition might be fully covered. Tuition for one semester is around 2000 dollars. Apply through International Relations, not directly to UNBC. Financial support If you receive SU, you can apply for ’udlandsstipendie’ to fully or partly cover the tuition fees. You need to apply through the SU Office. See more at www.sdu.dk/udlandsstipendium. Applications will be handled continuously. Ansøgningsfrister: Løbende The university’s Internationalization Fund SDU has its own fund to which you can apply for a grant for your individually arranged study or intern‐ ship period abroad. Students from all fields can apply for funds, regardless of where in the world your stay is. You can apply for grants for stays completed in the previous academic year also if you apply in the first round after finishing your stay. The following criteria are used for the grants: You have to be a full‐time student at SDU A minimum credit transfer of 5 ECTS should be awarded by your study board. Your study board has to give its pre‐approval of your stay abroad, and upon your return, you must apply for credit transfer. You cannot at the same time receive support from SDU’s other exchange programmes or from the ‘Udlandsstipendieordning.’ Special procedures apply to students of medicine (see separate info). Application deadlines: Ongoing 29
