Services - A Very Special Place, Inc
A Very Special Place Inc. From the Board of Directors It is with much pride to say that in 2010, A Very Special Place, Inc. marked its 36th year of service to the people with developmental disabilities living in the community of Staten Island. It all began when a need was defined - for people with developmental disabilities to become fully accepted into their community. The founders of A Very Special Place, Inc. undertook a mission to empower people with developmental disabilities to lead fuller lives. Both the founders and staff of devoted professionals continue to reach this vision, which has resulted in the growth of a complete service agency that meets the needs of over 1,600 Staten Islanders and their families. The word “potential” is used to describe something that is capable of developing into a reality. Each person at AVSP has a dream of achieving his/her own goals. I call upon all of our friends to continue to promote these visions. In these economic times, it is even more important to embrace the idea of giving, so that together we can bring “potential” to the next level so that it can become a “reality.” Financial contributions from friends like you allow us to provide the wider range of services that our consumers and their families currently receive. It is my hope that you will continue to support A Very Special Place in all of its efforts, so that the potential of our consumers can become the realities that they seek. By making a financial contribution, providing employment opportunities for our employment training participants, attending our annual Golf Outing, or volunteering, you are engaging in the creation of an environment where the goals of our consumers can be achieved. On behalf of the consumers, staff and my fellow members of the Board of Directors, it is with great pride that I present this Annual Report for A Very Special Place, Inc. Sonia Braniff President P A G E 1 Changing Potential Into Reality The potential that each person has inside themselves can be unlocked with the right key, turning their potential into a reality. The pages of this annual report highlight the great progress we are making towards empowering people with developmental disabilities and unlocking their full potential. The past 36 years have been wonderful, and the future of AVSP holds promising opportunities for people with developmental disabilities as we continue to provide quality programs and services that promote the ongoing growth and personal success of our participants as they strive to enrich their lives. In 1974, we set out on a mission to enable each person to achieve their fullest potential through programs and services that are individually tailored to suit their needs, as well as the needs of their families. For the past 36 years, AVSP has made great strides towards achieving this goal, with the support of our consumers, their families and advocates, our staff and our many friends and volunteers in the community. We are honored that so many people have embraced this mission and joined us on this journey. For goals to be reached by those we serve, it takes dedication and the perseverance. Independence is the prize that each participant strives for and they overcome challenges each and every day to achieve it. We offer a wide range of activities and programs that continually change and expand, as the demands and interests of the participants grow and change. Each individual has tremendous potential and by offering many positive directions for them to choose, we are laying the groundwork for success. The staff at AVSP play an integral role in the successes of our consumers as they unlock the potential of each participant and guide them on their road to achieving fullness in their lives. In each of our programs and services, lives are constantly changing, drawing people closer to finding their level of independence. We are proud of the accomplishments of AVSP. Over the years, we have opened two major program centers, the Quintard Center and the New Dorp Center. We developed Teleride, the first transportation system of its kind on Staten Island and started the Senior Network, one of the the first senior citizen center for people with developmental disabilities in New York City. More recently, we started the Creative Arts Network to enable our consumers to express themselves through art. The Employment Training Alternatives program will be extending their culinary skills to operate a café on New Dorp Lane open to the public. This café will also be combined with a supportive apartment living opportunity for six individuals. Along the way, we also established five homes and three apartments that provide residential services to 59 individuals. All of these achievements would not be possible without the support of our volunteers, donors and friends. Government funding alone is not enough to expand programs and extend our services to more people so that they too can achieve their fullest potential. Thank you for embracing our mission and supporting people with developmental disabilities. Genevieve R. Benoit Executive Director P A G E 2 A Very Special Place Inc. S ervices Since we strive to meet the individual needs of over 1,600 children and adults, our programs and services are as diverse as the people who utilize them. Staff members join with individuals, their families and advocates to create a positive, productive, supportive and caring environment where quality services are provided. With these collaborative efforts, people of all ages with developmental disabilities are assisted in meeting their immediate needs and in planning for the future. Adult Day Services A vast array of offerings are available to consumers aged eighteen and over depending upon the needs of the individual and what they wish to achieve. Active community involvement and independence are promoted within the context of varied activities offered in these programs. • T he New Dorp Lane Habilitation Services and the Milton Avenue Habilitation Services are both available in a fully accessible facility, which offers life-skill training both on and offsite to meet daily challenges. Resources within the community are used to provide hands-on experiences to achieve individually selected valued outcomes and encourage consumers to interact on a one-to-one basis with their peers. They offer numerous outside field activities in addition to the Center-based schedule. Each participant selects a special activity, event, or hobby, which he or she can look forward to engaging in on a regular basis. Many skills are learned and reinforced in natural settings during field activities. • T he Quintard Habilitation Services provides assessment and both site and communitybased training to develop the social, vocational, travel, and other skills necessary for work preparedness. Hands-on experience is provided in various locations on Staten Island. • Within this program, Team Cuisine consists of a group of consumers who are learning to follow menus, create shopping lists, travel to the store to purchase general items, general food preparation, as well as baking and cooking to prepare them for employment in restaurant and catering fields. • T he Senior Network is a retirement program that promotes the development of leisure skills through a variety of classes including ceramics, tile crafts, dancing and cooking, while assisting them in maintaining their present daily living skills. The Senior Network supports community integration of seniors through participation in activities that are offered at local senior centers. It provides enrichment opportunities and activities for those who wish to pursue the increasingly diverse interests reflected among today’s active seniors. Seniors choose activities that support independence and help them spend their retirement in a productive manner while maintaining their acquired skills. continued P A G E 3 S ervices Employment Training Recreational & Respite Services Employment training services assist individuals in assessing employment skills and preparing them to enter the workforce. The Supported Employment program arranges training and job placement for individuals who demonstrate skills needed for employment in the community. While on the job, coaches mentor our hired participants, giving them the confidence and skills needed to advance into a career. Our supported employment participants are involved in many work opportunities throughout Staten Island. Evening and weekend recreational services provided through the Community Center assist people to enhance their leisure and social skills in a secure environment outside the home, as well as in the community at large. Outreach Services Outreach services are generally provided outside the setting of our program sites. These services “without barriers” assist families by giving them access to a wider breadth of alternatives, services, goals and even environmental aids. • S ervice Coordination helps individuals and their families to identify needs, develop self-advocacy skills and obtain services and benefits. Routine consultations with consumers and families are conducted by qualified service coordinators to ensure a consumer’s individual choice is promoted and satisfaction is maintained. • R esidential Habilitation aids children and adults in improving their daily living skills, maintaining abilities, and carrying over skills learned in school or program during one-on-one sessions in the family’s home. • F amily Reimbursement provides financial support to individuals and their families for approved products and services. P A G E 4 • T he Community Center offers evening and Saturday morning recreational programs with participants selecting their desired classes/ modules on a trimester basis with courses such as fine arts, athletics, crafts, music and exercise. Program participants help to plan community outings of interest. Peer interaction is encouraged, as are personal growth and selfimprovement through class modules that are selected by the participants. • T he Weekend Respite program offers site and community-based recreational activities as a respite to the family on Saturdays and Sundays. Individuals have the opportunity to attend a variety of events that they select, plan and attend. • T he Weekend Respite for Teens assists teens and young adults in planning weekly outings and activities based on their preferences. Activities focus on independence, building on current competencies, enhancing self-esteem, and becoming more familiar with recreational resources. A Very Special Place Inc. • The Creative Arts Network, located at the Snug Harbor Cultural Arts Center, is an agency-wide gathering of program participants who have demonstrated an emerging or existing desire to express and develop his/her artistic abilities in a community based setting. Ongoing art instruction, exploration, and the ability to display artwork in the community are provided. • T he After School program offers a structured environment for 11-14 year-old children to participate in athletic, recreational and therapeutic activities, review school assignments on two afternoons a week during the school year. Transportation Services The TeleRide transportation network, a centralized transportation service coordinating a variety of transportation options, was the first ondemand transportation service of its kind when introduced by AVSP in 1985. TeleRide encourages independence and mobility by allowing individuals to plan activities in advance without reliance on public transportation. TeleRide operates 30 daily routes throughout Staten Island that are utilized not only by people that attend AVSP programs, but also by those who participate in activities at other Staten Island agencies for people with developmental disabilities. Residential Alternatives Our residential settings are homes that offer individually tailored environments for people aged 18 and over. The personal and social development of each resident is encouraged to help facilitate self-reliance and independence. A full range of services is available. Supervision levels and personalized staff assistance are based on the unique needs of each individual. • S upportive Living arrangements provide residential settings for adults who can live and work independently with minimal guidance and supervision. • S upervised Living settings provide a structured environment of 24-hour supervision, and can vary based on the needs of the residents. P A G E 5 M ilestones AVSP continues its mission to provide programs and services for people of all ages with developmental disabilities and to assist them in finding opportunities to achieve independence and self-fulfillment. The consumers’ needs are continuously addressed by current programs. The following accomplishments provides more opportunities for the needs of newly identified people: In the Spring of 2008, the agency opened the Jefferson Residence, providing residential support to eight individuals. Residents receive assistance with specific activities of daily living to enable each individual to become as independent as possible. In 2009, AVSP marked its 35th anniversary of providing services for the developmentally disabled within the Staten Island community. AVSP opened the first Day Treatment Center and Community Center at its first home at 241 New Dorp Lane 35 years ago. Today there are six residences and two program centers. In 2010, construction concluded on the seventh AVSP living opportunity, a Supportive Apartment. The Harvest Café opened to the public for breakfast and lunch and is a training site for program participants. This is a great opportunity for the P A G E 6 Employment Training Alternatives (ETA) program participants to gain skills that can be used in their lives and hopefully future workplaces. The agency’s Creative Arts Network continues to provide the opportunity to foster independence, development, and expression of artistic talents to establish personal growth. The Creative Arts Network held their first art show at the Staten Island Children’s Museum at Snug Harbor in the Fall of 2008 and held their very first auction in the Fall of 2009. They continue to participate in contests, which have had both exciting and winning outcomes. The 19th Annual Special Strokes for Special Folks Golf Outing achieved a notable benchmark by raising more than all other prior Golf Outings, due to the support received from the many sponsors, golfers, and Inkind donors who helped prepare for the event and joined us on that day. Special Strokes for Special Folks has generated well over $1.5 million dollars to date, to support the programs and services offered at A Very Special Place, Inc. The year 2009 also marked the 20th anniversary of the Special Strokes for Special Folks Golf Outing. A Very Special Place Inc. T he Annual Special Strokes for Special Folks Golf Outing The Special Strokes for Special Folks Golf Outing, said to be the second largest golf outing in New York City, is one of our major fundraising activities. Thanks to the generous support of the American Golf Corporation’s Adopt-A-Charity Program, the annual outing is held at the beautiful and challenging South Shore Golf Course each August. With over 20 years since our first tournament, Special Strokes for Special Folks has become one of the top golf events on Staten Island, raising over 1.5 million to help empower people with developmental disabilities to lead fuller lives. The outing features an exciting day of golf followed by dinner and a silent auction. Golfers have a chance to bid on a fabulous golf package at Pebble Beach in California, thanks to our partnership with Lexus of Manhattan and the Lexus Champions for Charity program. Other auction items include getaway vacations, artwork, theatre tickets, sports memorabilia and tickets to area sporting events. Registration includes 18 holes of golf with carts, breakfast, lunch and complimentary snacks and beverages throughout the day. Players compete in various hole in one contests including a Lexus automobile provided by Lexus of Manhattan and the Lexus Champions for Charity Program. Visit our web site at www.avspny.org for more photos from the most recent Golf Outing and information about the next one.
