To our Dear Neighbors, Friends and Supporters
The close connection between Mission Hospital and its neighbors throughout south Orange County reveals a
unique Spirit of Giving, a relationship characterized by people caring for the hospital that cares for them.
Without the generosity of our dedicated supporters—gifts of time from our volunteers, gifts of discernment and
leadership from our board members, and gifts of financial treasure from our donors, our expert staff and
affiliated physicians wouldn’t be able to have all the resources, programs and state-of-the-art technology
needed to provide the best possible care. These collective contributions sustain our success and nurture the
future growth of our healthcare ministry.

Over the past year, Mission Hospital was the beneficiary of $8.3 million in philanthropic giving through
individual donations, event proceeds, planned gifts, grants, bequests, and more. These gifts allowed Mission to
fulfill some important needs such as investing in capital purchases, replacing outdated medical equipment,
funding dozens of programs and services and providing scholarships to nurses to enhance their education and
training. In 2010, we also celebrated the one year anniversary of our Laguna Beach campus and the first full
year of caring for patients in our new acute care tower.
Looking forward to the next phase in Mission’s master plan, we are excited to announce our comprehensive
campaign—Mission500—a philanthropic effort to raise $500 million by 2020. These vital funds will allow us to
invest in the community’s current and future healthcare and wellness needs. Through the generosity of everyone
who supports Mission500, the hospital will be able to acquire state-of-the-art equipment, expand and upgrade
facilities, implement wellness and community benefit programs and build an endowment for future needs.

more than 2,000 of the area’s most skilled and compassionate physicians, nurses and allied health
professionals call Mission Hospital home. Mission500 will bolster our aspiration to provide the most advanced
diagnostic care in the world—and ensure that the patients we serve will continue to have access to renowned
healthcare leaders.
Over the coming decade, we will be focused on raising money to invest in emergency and trauma services,
diagnostic technology, cardiac services, women’s services, endowment and more. To date, Mission Hospital
Foundation has raised $137 million in cumulative donations.

Mazda Foundation Supports new Operating Rooms
In 2010, Mission Hospital received a $100,000 grant commitment
from the Mazda Foundation toward capital expansion. This donation
will support the addition of two new operating rooms at the Mission
Viejo campus. The Mazda Foundation previously supported Mission
Hospital’s Partners for Life Capital Campaign with a $100,000 award
for the Trauma and Emergency Department expansion.

Larry Pasternack:
Paying it Forward
Working for a small family business since he was 5 years old,
Larry Pasternack learned early that diligence and hard work pays
off. By the time he took the helm of Pasternack Enterprises in the
late ‘80s, he was primed for success. Under his leadership, he
implemented a new business model as a one-stop shop with
“just in time” inventory of hard to find components, and the
company quickly became the largest supplier of world-class
supplier of radio frequency and microwave components in the
industry.
In the course of all his success, Larry became the proud father of
two beautiful children, Amanda and Blake. His love and dedication
for his children soon surpassed his love for his career and his
desire to spend more time with his children prompted his early
retirement. Larry sold Pasternack Enterprises six years ago to
continue his devotion to his family. “These years are so important,
and I didn’t want to miss seeing them grow up,” he said, “I was a
latch-key kid and I vowed to be more accessible for my own kids.”
Although creating a fun childhood is important to Larry, he also
wants to instill in his children the value of giving to others and
being responsible for themselves. His charitable contributions
and volunteer work include helping the expansion efforts of his
children’s school. “I’m fortunate that I’m able to support different
causes and organizations that mean something to me,” he said.
“I’m particularly interested in supporting children and gave the
first, of several, major gifts to my kids’ school, St. Margaret’s
Episcopal School. Knowing that my money can be used to help
others is very important to me, and I want my kids to experience
the joy that comes from philanthropy.”

Larry has also ventured in several hobbies that have become
successful businesses. With a love for cooking and his history
of being a successful businessman, Larry invested in Cinderella
Cakes, making custom creative cakes for all occasions. With
three locations and growing, Cinderella Cakes has been voted #1
for best cakes on MyFox LA Hot List 3 years in a row and has
won 2011 Bride’s Choice awards to name a few. Recently, the TV
show “The Ultimate Cake off” held a contest and Cinderella
Cakes earned bragging rights after they won first place. Larry has
proven his successes and commitment as a father, businessman
and a philanthropist.
Recently, Mission Hospital was the proud beneficiary of Larry’s
generosity when he gave the hospital a $1 million gift. He was first
introduced to the Mission Hospital family by Lisa Dale, a good friend
who invited him to attend Mission’s gala five years ago. Through
Lisa’s introduction to Mission Hospital, Larry began talking with the
Foundation and was educated on the needs of charitable donations.
“Larry’s generosity to Mission Hospital speaks to his ‘true north’
compass of supporting what he believes in. He wants to make a
difference in our community by investing in the future needs of the
hospital. We will all benefit from his philanthropic Spirit of Giving for
years to come. We are so fortunate that he is part of the Mission
Hospital family,” says Lisa. “I didn’t realize that hospitals needed
community support in order to expand and have the latest medical
equipment,” Larry said. “Early diagnosis is critical to staying healthy
and my hope is that this gift will go to support Mission’s acquisition of
the latest technology. Whether it will benefit me, my family and friends
or someone I will never meet, I’m happy to support Mission Hospital.”

Mission Hospital’s 15th annual black-tie Gala Presented by
Nolets Spirits USA—the Nolet Family at the St. Regis Monarch
Beach was held on December 18, 2010, raising net proceeds of
over $1 million for the hospital.
The evening began with a VIP cocktail reception held to honor the
gala’s top sponsors. Mission Hospital President and Chief
Executive Officer Peter F. Bastone welcomed the guests and
thanked event co-chairs Todd Lempert, MD and Molly Mathes and
sponsorship chair Beth Schimmel for their volunteer leadership.
Bastone also recognized the gala’s Title Sponsor, Janet and Carl
Nolet, Jr. and Kim and Bill Eldien of Nolet Spirits USA — the
Nolet Family for their “incredible generosity” as the Title Sponsor
for the past five years. During the VIP reception, guests were
treated to a special tasting of Nolet Spirits’ new Nolet Silver Gin.

Hospital’s emergency room nurses who happened to also be
paddleboarding nearby.
Once in the ballroom for dinner, the 656 guests watched a video
about John Meade’s nearly fatal stroke. With a special
introduction by Carl Nolet, Jr., the video, “Angels on the Water,”
told the story of how Meade fell off his paddleboard and nearly
drowned after suffering a stroke. He was saved by two of Mission
John Meade and his wife Julie Williams were invited on stage
where during a standing ovation they presented flowers to their
“two angels,” nurses Ana Suarez and Julie Mackie. The crowd
gave them a standing ovation. Bastone then asked all the
physicians and nurses in the ballroom to stand and be
recognized for their life-saving work. “What does it take to save a
life?” said Bastone. “It takes compassion, clinical excellence, and
access to the best medical technology available. At Mission, we
talk a lot about our present and future plans to invest in the latest
technology so that we can provide the most advanced diagnostic
care for our community. The challenge is that we can’t fund

The gala also featured a silent and live auction. The silent auction
showcased travel packages, sports memorabilia, jewelry, and
more. Guests also had an opportunity to bid on a “Super Silent
Auction Item”—a 2011 Mazda CX 7 i Sport SUV donated by
Mazda North American Operations. The live auction generated a
lot of competitive bidding for exciting items including trips to
Paris, Prague, Puerta Vallarta and Banff, a special reception and
drinks with Arnold Palmer, wine tasting at Opus One in Napa and
a home-cooked Italian dinner by Bastone.

Camino Auxiliary Fashion Show

Proceeds benefit Camino Health Center
Camino Health Center Auxiliary’s 26th annual Fashion Show and
Luncheon raised net proceeds of over $412,000 to benefit the
programs and services at Camino Health Center. Affiliated with
Mission Hospital, Camino is a fully licensed, community-based
clinic in San Juan Capistrano that delivers quality primary
healthcare to those without coverage or to those who are
underinsured. More than 425 guests attended the Fashion Show
and Luncheon at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel on Tuesday,
November 23, 2010. The event was planned and organized by the
Camino Health Center Auxiliary, who over the past 26 years has
raised more than $4.9 million for the Center.

The 18th Annual Mission Hospital Golf Classic presented by Audi
and Infiniti of Mission Viejo was held at Coto de Caza Golf &
Racquet Club on June 28, 2010. Thanks to the generosity of more
than 100 sponsors and the participation of 275 golfers, the event
raised net proceeds of $360,000 to benefit Mission Hospital.
Audi and Infiniti of Mission Viejo partnered with Mission
Hospital as the tournament sponsor for the second year in a row.
“I am honored to support the life-saving work at Mission
Hospital,” said Audi and Infiniti of Mission Viejo owner Matt
Gunderson. “As a local business owner and nearby resident, it
gives me great peace of mind to know that there is a world-class
hospital right here in our own community.”
After a round of golf on either the north or south course, golfers
were treated to a cocktail reception featuring Ketel One’s ice
martini bar; silent auction, dinner, awards and live auction. The
live auction offered high end prize packages including a stay at

Mission Hospital’s 14th Annual Valiant Women Luncheon

was held on March 12, 2010 at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel,
raising net proceeds of $125,000 for Women’s Services at
Mission Hospital. The 500-guest fundraiser included a silent
auction, luncheon, luxury opportunity drawing packages (valued
at up to $4,900), and a runway fashion show featuring clothing
and accessories from retailers at The Shops at Mission Viejo.
Proceeds from the 2010 Valiant Women Luncheon support three
important areas that impact women in our community as well as
within Mission Hospital.

Think Pink Wall of Honor
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mission
Hospital’s Valiant Women support group hosted its eighth
annual Breast Health Wall of Honor, presented by Capistrano
Volkswagen and Pacific Rim Capital, Inc. During the month of
October, the Wall of Honor was displayed at The Shops at
Mission Viejo. Through generous sponsors and donations,
more than $42,000 was raised to support screening, diagnosis,
and treatment of women in our community served by Mission
Breast Health Services, many of whom wouldn’t otherwise be
able to afford this vital care.

Founders/StarFinders Summer Social
Mission Hospital Foundation’s annual Founders and StarFinders
Family Summer Social was held at the St. Regis Monarch Beach
on July 18, 2010. Members of both support groups make
contributions of $1,000 or more each year to help Mission’s
healing ministry. StarFinders—a membership support group
that previously supported South Coast Medical Center, now
contributes their gifts to Mission Hospital Laguna Beach.
Since their inception in 1983, StarFinders have raised nearly
$1.7 million. Formed in 1994, Founders have raised more than
$1 million for Mission Hospital’s expansion. Currently they have
raised $555,500 toward their $1 million commitment for Mission
Women’s Wellness Center. The Summer Social featured a catered
barbeque buffet, fun activities for the children and a speech from
Founder’s Board Vice Chair and former patient Tom Monaghan.

Philanthropist Circle Dinner
The Foundation held its third annual Philanthropist Circle
Recognition Dinner at the Ritz-Carlton on February 10, 2010.
Philanthropist Circle members are donors who have made
cumulative gifts to Mission Hospital of $100,000 or more.
During the evening’s program, Mission Hospital Foundation’s
Chief Development Officer Winnie Johnson welcomed 54 new
members into this prestigious group of donors, double the
number of new donors from the previous year, and thanked all
the Philanthropist Circle members for their generous Spirit of
Giving in supporting critical needs at Mission Hospital. The
evening also featured an inspiring video of Terry Cady whose life
had been saved at Mission. Terry and his wife Jana McDonough
decided to become Philanthropist Circle donors in gratitude for
the care they received at Mission.

Guardian Dinner
Guardian and Benefactor donors gathered for the third annual
Guardian Recognition Dinner at the Aliso Viejo Country Club on
April 13, 2010. Guardians and Benefactors have made
cumulative gifts to Mission Hospital from $25,000 to $99,999.
Foundation Board of Directors Vice Chair Ed Jordan emceed the
program and welcomed 109 new individuals, groups and
corporations who joined this group of Mission Hospital
supporters in the past year. This group has made a difference in
the lives of countless patients and families who come to Mission
for healing.

Spirit of Giving Ceremony
Mission Hospital Foundation held its annual donor wall “Spirit
of Giving” ceremony on March 23, 2010 to celebrate the
community’s gifts to the hospital. Over the past year, the
Foundation installed new recognition walls listing 2,293 donors
who collectively donated $125 million in gifts to the Mission
Viejo campus. During the evening’s program, Cindy Mirsky,
Foundation Board Member and Chair of the Stewardship
Committee, honored several donors for their unique
contributions: Herbert Nootbaar for being the first donor to South
Coast Community Hospital, now Mission Hospital Laguna
Beach; the High School Student Volunteers for contributions of
both time and treasure; and Winnie Johnson and her husband
John Bolger for giving the most individual gifts to Mission—a
total of 300. All of these names are listed in gratitude for
generosity and to inspire others to express their Spirit of Giving.

Summit Society Luncheon
Mission Hospital considers legacy giving—including the
hospital in your estate plan, or as a beneficiary of life insurance
or retirement plan assets—to be one of the most profound
expressions of philanthropy. Each gift creates a lasting legacy for
tomorrow’s generations. The Foundation celebrated members of
the Summit Society at an annual appreciation luncheon on
October 14, 2010 at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club. If you are one of

Light up a Life

Net Proceeds: $27,000
Proceeds benefit Hospice and Palliative Care Services at Mission
The Auxiliary of Mission Hospital hosted the 16th annual Light up
a Life tree lighting celebration on December 5, 2010 to honor or
memorialize a loved one. Proceeds from the event supported
hospice and palliative care services at Mission. Guest speakers
included Chaplain Michael Barton, Maire Blaisdell, Director of St.
Joseph Hospice, Michael Malouf, MD, Medical Director of St
Joseph Hospice; and Doreen McAlister who spoke about her
experience with hospice from a daughter’s perspective. The
evening concluded as guests wrote messages to their loved ones
on star-shaped ornaments and placed them on the tree.

Butterfly Celebration

The Auxiliary of Mission Hospital Laguna Beach hosted a
Butterfly Celebration on June 13, 2010 to support Mission’s
hospice and palliative care services for terminally ill patients.
Laguna Beach mayor Elizabeth Pearson praised Mission Hospital
for stepping in to be good stewards of their beloved hospital and
remarked how fortunate the community was to have such a
world-class hospital in their backyard. Co-chairs Patti Fouse and
Leslie Wilhelm led the ceremony by releasing hundreds of
butterflies from a large basket. Then, each guest released their
own butterfly. Everyone admired them as they lingered on rose
bushes before gracefully rising into the blue sky.

Mission Hospital Social
Mission Hospital Partners’ Annual Recognition Event “El Primero
de Mayo,” presented by AT&T, was held April 30, 2010 at the Carl
Nolet, Sr. Hospitality Center. The event raised more than $16,000 for
Mission Hospital’s Community Benefit programs and services. Each
year, 10 percent of Mission Hospital’s net income is allocated to
Care for the Poor. In addition, Mission reserves 1.5 percent of
operating expenses to meet specific needs of our community. In
FY09, net contributions exceeded $23 Million.

Doctors’ Day
Each year to commemorate National Doctors’ Day on March 30,
Mission Hospital Foundation offers the community an
opportunity to say thank you to their doctors by making a tribute

employees made gifts or pledges to the hospital’s healing ministry
in 2010. In total, $112,000 was raised for Mission Hospital
expansion, technology, care for the underserved and approved
