ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY FOUNDATION 2014/2015 ANNUAL REPORT BACKGROUND AND PROGRAMS OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT Founded in 1942, the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) is a multifaceted organization that occupies a unique place in the world of philanthropy. By mobilizing and leveraging the powerful voice and creative talents of the entire entertainment community, as well as cultivating the support of organizations (public and private) and philanthropists committed to social responsibility, EIF builds awareness and raises funds, developing and enhancing programs on the local, national and global level that facilitate positive social change. The Foundation also supports and encourages the philanthropic efforts of all members of the entertainment community. OUR APPROACH EIF creates high-profile programs and events that address critical social issues, as well as those that inform, inspire and raise significant funds for sustainable initiatives that can stimulate innovation and transform lives. EIF also responds to urgent needs generated by natural disasters and national or international tragedies. BOARD OF DIRECTORS (as of March, 2016) Sherry Lansing Founder and CEO Sherry Lansing Foundation Jeff Bader President, Program Planning, Strategy and Research NBC Entertainment David Beaubaire Executive Vice President, Creative TriStar Productions Lynn Harris Producer Weimeraner Republic Pictures Peter Seymour Executive Vice President & CFO Disney/ABC Television Group Chris Silbermann Founding Partner ICM Partners Jack Sussman Executive Vice President, Specials, Music & Live Events CBS Television Dan Harrison Executive Vice President, Strategic Program Planning FOX Broadcasting Company Richard Lovett President Creative Artists Agency HISTORY In 1942, Hollywood moguls Samuel Goldwyn and the Warner Brothers, along with movie stars Gene Kelly, Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney, decided that the people and companies of the motion picture industry could make a more significant contribution to WWII relief efforts working together than going it alone. That first year, the industry’s collective efforts raised $1 million for the Red Cross, largely through a payroll deduction program. The Permanent Charities Committee of the Motion Picture Industry (as EIF’s precursor was named) made significant inroads in the health arena in California during the next few decades. The first awareness campaign it conducted was at President Roosevelt’s request, to help eradicate childhood polio. In the 1950s and 60s, it provided significant funding for a specially equipped coronary care ambulance that became the cornerstone of the Los Angeles County paramedic program. Other innovations include the state’s first “Vision Van” that provided glaucoma screenings, and the first-ever self-contained Bloodmobile for the American Red Cross’s donation program. In the 1990s, the Permanent Charities Committee changed its name to the Entertainment Industry Foundation and began to transition from the historic industry payroll deduction model of giving to a more public-facing fundraising approach. Utilizing the unique resources of the film studios and TV networks, along with the volunteer participation of hundreds of celebrity ambassadors, EIF’s charitable initiatives in the last two decades have generated national awareness about critical issues the Foundation seeks to address. Since the outset, more than $1 billion has been raised to support medical research; enhance education; eradicate childhood hunger; and encourage community service and volunteerism, among other areas. Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is a movement created in 2008 to raise funds to accelerate groundbreaking cancer research that will get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives, by facilitating collaboration among scientists at different institutions and in different disciplines. More than $360 million has been pledged, largely as a result of a biennial televised event carried by over 40 major broadcast and cable networks, and available in 195 countries. Several hundred celebrities have volunteered their time to participate in the telecast and other fundraising and awareness efforts. SU2C funds over 1,000 scientists across 131 major institutions that collaborate to develop promising new cancer treatments for patients. Two new FDA-approved drugs have resulted from this research. Grants are administered by SU2C’s scientific partner, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the largest such scientific organization in the world. AACR works with a Nobel Laureate-led Scientific Advisory Committee, comprised of world-class scientists across several disciplines and patient advocates, to identify the most promising projects to recommend for funding and provide expert review of research progress. “It is the best dollar spent in this country for support of cancer research and benefit of patients.” Dr. Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D., Nobel Laureate and Chair of SU2C’s Scientific Advisory Committee THE IMPACT OF STAND UP TO CANCER Through the end of 2015, SU2C has funded 18 Dream Teams, 2 Translational Research Teams and 26 Innovative Research Grants. These grant recipients total more than 1,000 researchers, representing 131 leading institutions around the world. Collectively, they are involved in 166 planned, launched, or completed clinical trials, in which more than 6,000 patients have participated. Some specific accomplishments of the teams include: • A drug to treat advanced breast cancer in post-menopausal women, Ibrance (palbociclib), has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the SU2C Breast Cancer Dream Team showed dramatically increased survival in women taking it. The FDA had granted the drug “Breakthrough Therapy” status, which accelerated its review. • Based on work by the SU2C Pancreatic Cancer Dream Team, FDA approved a new combination of drugs (abraxane and gemcitabine) that enables longer survival in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. They have also discovered, and are now testing in clinical trials, that vitamin D-like agents may change the environment around the pancreatic cancer cells so that the anti-cancer drugs work better. • The SU2C-CRI Immunology Dream Team is harnessing patients’ own immune systems to attack their cancer, an exciting new direction in cancer research. The team’s work led to FDA approval of a new “checkpoint inhibitor” immune therapy, Keytruda (pembrolizumab), to treat late-stage melanoma in patients previously treated with another melanoma drug. • The Immunology Dream Team has also developed new approaches to predict who will benefit from pembrolizumab and other checkpoint inhibitor drugs. • The SU2C Epigenetics Dream Team showed that treatment of lung cancer was more successful when patients were given epigenetic therapy first to sensitize the cancer to further treatment. If confirmed by more research, this finding could impact the treatment of many types of cancer. THE IMPACT OF STAND UP TO CANCER • The SU2C Epigenetics Dream Team also conducted a clinical trial of an experimental drug for certain types of leukemia, quickly moving the drug from the lab to its first use in humans. Based on very promising findings, this drug has now moved to advanced phase 3 clinical trials. • The SU2C Circulating Tumor Cell (CTC) Chip Dream Team developed a new device that can find a single cancer cell amid 1 billion cells in a teaspoon of blood. This will allow doctors to monitor treatments in cancer patients in real time, and to try different treatments if current ones are not effective. The next-generation CTC chip is now in development. • The SU2C-MRA Dream Team received the first-ever FDA approval for a new approach to rapid genetic profiling of melanoma, which the team will use to match drugs to individual tumors based on their genetic characteristics –an example of “precision” or “personalized” medicine. • Working with pharmaceutical companies, the SU2C PI3K Dream Team launched clinical trials of a new combination therapy aimed at a common “signaling network” in cancer cells. The combination was effective in certain patients with a particular subtype of breast cancer. • SU2C has funded two Prostate Cancer Dream Teams in collaboration with the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). The Dream Teams are using next-generation genetic sequencing to profile individual patients’ cancers, helping guide personalized approaches to treatment. • The SU2C-St. Baldrick’s Foundation Pediatric Cancer Dream Team is developing and testing new therapies that utilize patients’ own immune systems. The team’s work will lead to the first clinical trials that use this type of therapy to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), as well as other childhood cancers. • The 2014 Sta Op Tegen Kanker (SU2C-KWF) Translational Cancer Research Dream Team is achieving 80% to almost 100% success in growing organoids (“tumors-in-a dish”) from patients with pancreas or colorectal cancer for genetic profiling and drug testing. In collaboration with the SU2C-PCF Prostate Cancer Dream Team 1, steady progress is being made toward establishing prostate cancer organoids, which are much more difficult to grow in the laboratory. EIF’s National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) is dedicated to the eradication of colorectal cancer by promoting the importance of screening and funding research to develop better tests, treatments, and ultimately a cure. The initiative was cofounded in March of 2000 by Katie Couric and EIF. The colon cancer death rate dropped 30% in the first decade of the NCCRA’s public awareness efforts to encourage more people to get recommended colorectal cancer screening tests. Since 2005, EIF’s NCCRA has collaborated with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on a campaign to promote colon cancer screening called “Screen for Life.” Celebrity ambassadors including Couric, Terrence Howard, and Meryl Streep have appeared in the jointly-produced “Screen for Life” PSAs, which have collectively generated more than 7 billion impressions. The CDC considers “Screen for Life” the most successful cancer prevention campaign it has undertaken. Funds raised through EIF’s NCCRA have supported research at institutions including: Arizona State University Foundation, Case Western Reserve University-Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Columbia University Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School-Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University Kimmel Cancer Center, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center/UCLA, University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center, University of Texas-MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. EIF’s NCCRA also supports the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Think It Up is EIF’s new national education initiative, established to reframe the public discussion about education, create a culture of excitement about learning everywhere in America and build a sense of optimism about the potential of education in classrooms across the country. Think It Up invites public, middle and high school students to work with their teachers to develop projects that draw on their passions and help pursue their educational goals. Posted on thinkitup.org, in collaboration with DonorsChoose.org, the student-powered, teacher-led projects are crowdfunded by citizen donors, with major supporters of Think It Up matching some public contributions. The projects entail rigorous skill development that prepares American youth for post-high school life, helping pave the way for career success, regardless of the path. More than 1,000 projects have already been funded through thinkitup.org since its launch in September 2015. Major supporters of Think It Up include XQ Institute, Ashoka's Start Empathy initiative, ExxonMobil, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Staples. In March 2014, Academy Award®- nominated actress Viola Davis, together with the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) and The Safeway Foundation, launched Hunger Is, a joint charitable program designed to raise awareness and funds to fight childhood hunger in the United States. The year-round campaign encourages individuals and communities to get involved in solving a widespread problem that too often goes unnoticed. Funds raised through the initiative go toward programs focused on eradicating childhood hunger and improving health-related outcomes. During the inaugural year, breakfast programs have been the focus, giving children a healthy start to their day and the best chance to excel. Over $14 million has been raised to date. EIF’s Hollywood Unfiltered program was created in 2001, in collaboration with the film industry, and in partnership with the Directors Guild of America, The Writers Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild and the Motion Picture Association of America. This program educates members of the entertainment community about the impact of smoking on young people and the steps they can take to reduce on-screen smoking. Anti-smoking PSAs have been placed on DVDs of new G, PG and PG-13 rated movies. To date, more than 100 million DVDs include an anti-smoking PSA.
