Madalyne was 14 the day she moved in with her dad. After living with
her mother for four months following her parents’ split, she was kicked
out. The first night of the change, her dad heard her crying in the middle
of the night; he went into her room and just silently held her tight.
Alexander has been both a father and a mother to Madalyne since he
split from Madalyne’s mother. “My mom wasn’t making the right
decisions in life,” said Madalyne. “I didn’t like her boyfriend, or the fact
that there were strange men coming and going.” Today, 25-year-old,
brown haired, Madalyne is a successful, intelligent, caring and vibrant
young lady. She attributes her success in life to her father not giving
up on her.
One Mother’s Day, when Madalyne was in her twenties, she searched for
a card for her mother. All of the Mother’s Day cards she read reminded
her of her dad. Madalyne picked out her favourite Mother’s Day card
and added her own words so that it pertained to her dad. Inside the
card, Madalyne wrote a message; the first sentence read, “I know it’s
Mother’s Day, but for the longest time you’ve been both my mother and
father.”
Back when Madalyne was kicked out by her mother, Madalyne called her
father, Alexander, who lived nearly 20 kilometres away. Just 20 minutes
after the phone call, the door to her bedroom opened. Madalyne and her
father packed her bags and were on their way to their new life together;
however, their new life came with huge financial stress. Although
Alexander didn’t have an extra penny to his name, he somehow found a
way to support his daughter. Madalyne played baseball and was in her
senior years at school, yet she received all the necessities she needed
and much more. To this day, she doesn’t know how he did it. When
graduation came, she decided she wasn’t going to go because she knew

her father couldn’t afford it. A teacher at her school stepped up and
bought two tickets for Madalyne and Alexander. Alexander’s daughter
from a previous marriage stepped up and bought Madalyne a grad dress,
so off to grad Madalyne went.
Madalyne once had a baseball tournament that was a five hour drive from
their home. Alexander didn’t have a vehicle because he let Madalyne’s
mom take it after the split. He took the risk of taking his work truck
and borrowing money so his baby girl could go. “I would do anything I
could for her,” said Alexander.
Alexander was there for Madalyne no matter what. Although they
worked together at household chores and Alexander cooked as much as
he could on the barbeque to avoid dishes, he did so much more. He was
a teacher, a laundress, a friend, a rock, a cook, a tutor, a taxi, a nurse, a
parole officer and a bank.
Alexander got through it, and has raised a girl who has become a
successful woman. His beliefs, resilience and perseverance are part of
what made her who she is today. “Be tight with your kids, love them,
show them you care, and be there for them no matter what,” said
Alexander. “They are the most important people in our world. We need
to raise them right because that’s how they will know how to raise their
children.”
The rest of Madalyne’s message on the card that Alexander proudly
shared with us read, “You’ll never know what your love and faith has
helped me through. You are the best part of my life, and you mean the
world to me. You were there for me when no one else was, and you
sacrificed so much for me. I’m truly grateful that you’re my mother/
father. I’ll never forget anything you’ve done.”
Here’s the Scoop wishes that all Dads out there have a very Happy
Father’s Day. And for the Moms who may have to play the role of dad
as well, we hope you too, take time to reflect and enjoy the knowledge
of knowing that your children will one day be great.... because you are
leading by example.

Q: We have an outside wall that we painted with alkyd paint (for
metal or wood). The next year it started peeling. Our home is a
winterized cottage. We’ve got a dirt floor crawl space. Moisture
may be coming in from below.
One suggestion was to put a moisture barrier on the ground. But
it would be also good to know what type of paint would be good
for this situation. When we strip the wall and paint it, I want it to
stick this time!

A: Dear ZL,
By all means put the vapor barrier on the ground! A heavy plastic
tarp, overlapped by at least a foot or more if any seams are
necessary, and held in place with rocks if necessary.
Alkyd paint acts as a vapor barrier, so if there is a significant
amount of moisture entering the wall space, it will tend to literally
push the paint off the walls! Reducing the moisture from the
crawlspace might alone do the trick, but since you have a
recorded history of paint peeling I would advise using a latex
primer and paint (or latex stain alone) instead. This will allow
more of the day-to-day moisture to penetrate the surface without
lifting the new finish.
The old paint surface should be sanded, scraped, sandblasted
and/or power washed so that it will be somewhat porous, dust-free
and mildew free. This will give you the best chance for success.

This is Chao, we named him Chao
because of his Chaotic nature. When he
came to Bail Us Out!! he was about five
weeks old and his momma could no
longer feed him. When he arrived we took
good care of him and put some weight on
him. He is three years old, all his shots
are up to date & he has been altered. We
are still fighting to keep the weight on him.
Due to his early separation from his mom
he is very skittish and shy around most
humans. He will have to go to a home with
a lot of patience & love. He offers great
assistance with all the new animals,
making them feel welcome even helping
to bottle feed two week old kittens. If you

On May 25, a farm crew just outside
or in Strathmore witnessed a person
throwing something out of the car while
still moving. They suspected it to be an
animal, and when they searched the
ditch they found a small black fluffy
kitten. No other kittens were found. The
kitten was severely injured, and later
sucumbed to those injuries at the Apex
Animal Clinic.
We are offering a reward to anybody
with any identifying information about
the person who killed this kitten so
inhumanely. We’re in contact with the
authorities and an investigation is under
way.
