LIVING IN GOD’S HANDS
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
I
sn’t it a comfort to know
that God works through prayers?
Sometimes God heals us in
response to prayers. Other times,
knowing that others are praying
for us helps us hold on during
hard times. Praying together
reminds us that we are not alone.
We are in God’s hands.
As we adjust to unexpected
losses in our health care team, we
at Christian Rest Home especially
know how much prayer matters.
Meet two of our nursing staff who
cannot imagine doing their jobs
without God’s help.
In April 1995, Kathie Pearson
began working here once or twice
a week as the RN supervisor for
the 3-11 shift. “It was a good way
to ease back into nursing after our
family returned from doing
church planting in Brazil. Marge
Houskamp, the RN Quality
Improvement Nurse, hired me
back then and we currently share
an office. She’s a good teacher and
friend,” Kathie says.
In 2001, Kathie became our
part-time Assistant Director of
Nursing. She now works three
long days a week, so she overlaps
— Romans 12:12
all shifts. “My work is multifaceted. Sometimes I’m in meetings all day. When I walk halls,
I’m always alert for who’s in the
hall, whose alarm is going off,
and how I can encourage other
nursing staff. I also like my quiet
office downstairs, where I make
telephone calls to resolve medical
billing questions and find good
prices on supplies,” she says.
Kathie begins most days by
checking stocks and supplies,
everything from dressings and
gloves to drugs, lab test kits, and
requisition forms. “It helps to
have a nurse involved, because I
Kathie Pearson, Assistant Director
of Nursing, with her mother
Helen Smits, CRH resident.
know what products will work
best for residents,” she says. She
attends a morning meeting with
the director of nursing, unit managers, social workers, and minimum data set (MDS) nurses.
“I manage falls, so I also meet
with a team to discuss root causes
and possible interventions for resident falls. Wheelchair alarms
cause a lot of noise and agitation
and don’t necessarily prevent
falls. By late spring we plan to
eliminate most alarms,” she says.
Her team is working on a plan for
having the same aides and nurses
work with the same residents for
longer times. They’ll be able to
anticipate when their residents are
likely to move because of hunger
or needing a bathroom.
Kathie tracks all employee
injuries and makes sure employees get occupational health services. “Sometimes we need to
teach them to lift differently. Our
nurse educator helps them be
aware of residents’ behaviors that
could potentially injure staff,” she
says.
She does yearly evaluations
for all 125 certified nurse aides. “I
know all of them, though I don’t
know the 11-7 shift as well. I’m
more thankful than ever for our
aides, because I see what they do
for my mom, Helen Smits, who
resides at Christian Rest Home.
They are tremendous. Their work
is physically and emotionally
draining and has so many
changing regulations. Dawn
Kasprowicz took such good care
of my mom. I took the call from
Dawn’s husband after her unex(continued on page 4)

We continue to update plumbing, fixtures, flooring,
and walls in resident bathrooms within Christian Rest
Home. The first phase replaced 28 bathrooms constructed
in 1957 and 1964. The second phase includes nine bathrooms constructed in 1972. We hope to complete the entire
project this summer. The remodeling provides an updated
look and easier-to-clean surfaces. The total cost for the resident bathroom update project is $148,000.
Healthcare reform continues to focus on cost containment. The State of Michigan is working on a demonstration project in other areas of the state to integrate care for
“dual eligibles.” Dual eligibles are people eligible for both
Medicare and Medicaid coverage. The program is being
designed to coordinate medical care and mental health
needs in the most appropriate but least restrictive settings
while reducing readmissions to hospitals. Other reforms
encompass payments to providers based on outcomes and
increased cost sharing by recipients of services.
Thank you for your continuing support through
prayers, gifts, and volunteer time. Please consider donating again to help us meet residents’ needs. We praise God
for his grace and blessing in our ministry.
Dykema and Kathie Pearson. Gayle
Dykema, RN, was promoted to director of nursing for Christian Rest
Home as of January 5, 2015. Gayle
served as our director-of-nursing-intraining with Carol VanderClay, RN,
since March 2014. Gayle previously
worked as an oncology nurse at
Spectrum Health. We congratulate and extend our support
to Gayle in her new role. Kathie Pearson, RN, has been
faithfully serving as our assistant director of nursing for
nearly 14 years and worked as an RN supervisor for her
first six years at Christian Rest Home. We are grateful for
their leadership, professional development of our nursing
staff, passion for quality nursing care, and for their commitment to our residents. We are thankful for the compassionate care that all our nursing staff members provide to
our residents.
Through service awards and an annual banquet, our
board members honor staff members who have reached
milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and more years of service.
You can see recent award recipients pictured in this
newsletter. We are thankful for the stability that long-term
staff members provide for our facilities, and we value
each member’s unique contribution to our ministry.

TRY THIS FREE WAY TO HELP CHRISTIAN REST HOME
It cost them nothing to make the
change. It didn’t take much time. Yet
many prudent people did something
that made a significant difference for
Christian Rest Home in recent years.
What was this simple action? At
some point, these people accepted an
offer of free help with their wills and
estate plans. They decided to include
a bequest in their estate plan for
Christian Rest Home or Christian Rest
Home Foundation (though it’s fine to
receive help and not give to us). In
2014, we received six bequests totaling $218,855.
You can take advantage of this
same free help. Almost everyone
wonders how to pass property to a
surviving spouse, provide for
orphaned children, or avoid heavy
estate taxes. But many Christians
have extra questions. Those who have
faithfully tithed from their income
want to know how to use their will to
tithe from their estate.
More than 6,000 people have already
accepted the Barnabas Foundation
offer to work out a plan to provide for
loved ones and give to Christian causes. This plan can also include answers
to key questions, such as:
• How will my property be distributed when I die? (You need a will.)
• Who can manage my property if I
lose my ability to think straight?
(You need a durable power of
attorney.)
• Who will make health decisions if I
become unable to do so for myself?
(You need a health care power of
attorney.)
Steve Baker and Amy Bakker
Baty, the local Barnabas Foundation
representatives, have practiced law in
business and estate planning.
Typically, they need to meet with you
just once, for only 60 to 90 minutes, to
develop a free written analysis for
you to bring to an attorney. Steve or
Amy can recommend attorneys who
know how to include charity in wills
and estate plans. Gifts to the Barnabas
Foundation are neither solicited nor
2
encouraged, because nearly 200
Christian member organizations support the foundation. So you won’t be
asked for a “donation.”
For free, confidential advice on
estate planning, phone Todd Nyeholt
at (616) 453-2475. You can get the
same free, confidential advice from
attorneys at the local Barnabas
Foundation office. Simply phone (616)
956-1232 and ask to speak with Steve
Baker or Amy Bakker Baty. Their
email addresses are [email protected] and [email protected].

STAFF: LIVING IN GOD’S HANDS
pected passing. My mom’s first
question was about who will take
care of her family.
“We miss Dawn and we miss
Carol VanderClay, who was our
director of nursing. She and I were
in the same nursing class at
Butterworth Hospital. At my age, I
know how taxing her job was—
and I chose to continue in my current role. Yet Carol truly cared
about staff and residents and
always had time to sit down and
talk. Our staff hasn’t had time to
thoroughly grieve these losses. We
trust in the Lord, and we keep
reminding each other that God is
in control. We keep praying for
our medical director, Clint Harris,
trusting in the Lord’s hands,”
Kathie says.
Her husband, Gene, is pastor
of care and counseling at Rush
Creek Bible Church and is also a
licensed private counselor. The
Pearsons live in Hudsonville.
They have three married daughters and eight grandchildren,
including a set of five-year-old
triplets. When she’s not at work,
Kathie enjoys reading, Bible study,
helping with grandchildren, and
staying in touch with missionary
and Brazilian friends. “It’s a full,
rich life,” she says.
When Gayle Dykema began
as director-of-nursing-in-training
in March 2014, she never pictured
being director of nursing by now.
“Carol VanderClay came to realize
she needed more help due to her
health, so Christian Rest Home
created a new position.
I’d been looking for something
full time, and I’ve always loved
taking care of elderly people. I see
working here as a ministry, not
just a job,” Gayle says.
She was an oncology nurse at
Spectrum Health before coming
here. “When I was hired, I knew
from my oncology training what
Carol would go through. But I
(continued from page 1)
didn’t realize how sick she was.
None of us expected her to be
gone so soon. But I got to know
her really well. She left big shoes
to fill, but she told me it gave her
comfort to see me in this role,”
Gayle says.
She works Monday through
Friday and is on call as needed.
Her days begin with an interdisciplinary meeting for nursing,
social work, and dietary staff to
discuss specific resident concerns.
Each week she attends therapy
meetings with social work, physical and occupational therapy staff.
Much of her work deals with
in-the-moment needs, such as
talking with families about concerns or with the pharmacy about
which medications are covered.
She also works to ensure adequate staffing on all shifts. The
direct care nursing staff for the
day shift includes 25 certified
nurse aides, plus six charge
nurses, and three RN unit managers. The evening shift includes
16 certified nurse aides, six charge
nurses, and the RN nursing
supervisor. The night shift
includes 10 certified nurse aides,
two or three charge nurses and
the RN nursing supervisor.
I talk with and mentor aides
about following care plans, using
wheelchairs properly, or whatever. I want them to feel comfort-

able coming to me with anything.
“I love being in contact with
residents. If they have a bathroom
light or alarm on, I quickly
respond. Recently, I was with
someone as they passed away.
“I love that this is a Christian
organization that follows its name.
The Bible is publically read each
morning, noon and night. I lead
devotions if Todd’s not there. I feel
comfortable praying with people.
So many staff feel like working
here is their calling. We’re not here
just to take care of the body but
also the mind, soul, and emotions,” Gayle says.
She describes Carol
VanderClay as a model of staying
kind and being involved. “She
taught me that you can make an
impact in five minutes. I don’t like
to show my stress at work, but on
one really busy day, a resident
stopped me. He took my hand
and said, ‘I just wanted you to
know I’ve been praying for you.’
His comment reminded me of
Carol saying, ‘As hard as a day
may be going, someone will bless
you along the way.’”
Gayle was so familiar with
Christian Rest Home before
coming to work here that she
describes it as “a home to me.”
Her father, Ron Klaasen, is on our
board. Both his parents lived here
till they died. “The nurses did an
amazing job with my grandparents. We have a photo of me at
age three, sitting with my greatgrandfather outside Christian Rest
Home,” she says.
Her husband, Brian, is a tool
and die salesman. They live in
northeast Grand Rapids with their
“pride and joy”—their 10-year-old
daughter, Olivia, adopted from
Guatemala. The Dykemas attend
Providence Reformed Church and
live within five or ten minutes of
most of their family members.
They enjoy camping and going to
Guatemala on mission trips.

Will You Pray?
Carol worked here for 27 years, first as an RN
nursing supervisor and the last 14 years as director
of nursing. She died of complications from
melanoma. Carol was totally dedicated to mastering
the complexities of her job, yet she always made
time to talk with anyone who needed to.
We also ask for your prayers for Clint Harris,
the physician for the vast majority of Christian Rest
Home residents and about two-thirds of residents at
Edison Assisted Living Center. We love him for his
excellent diagnostic skills and compassion. In
February, Dr. Harris had surgery to remove another
brain tumor, and he’ll probably need more radiation and chemotherapy. Please pray as well for the
doctors who are filling in for Clint.
You probably know that most people who
work at Christian Rest Home tend to stay in their
jobs for a long time. We view our jobs as a calling, a
joint ministry to create an extended family of care
for our residents. Losing a long-time colleague is
hard on all of us. That’s why we hope you’ll keep
praying for everyone affected by the deaths of
Dawn Kasprowicz (July 6, 1963 - December 30,
2014) and Carol VanderClay (June 1, 1953 - January
2, 2015).
Dawn worked here for 30 years as a certified
nurse aide. She died from an aortic aneurysm on
the way to work. Co-workers, residents, and family
members described Dawn as caring, kind, servanthearted, and hard working.
