Reflections on Hope
“Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it,
the road comes into existence.” -Lin Yutang
p18-21 Road to Hope
Documentary
This quote neatly summarizes one of the initiatives Center for Hospice Care/Hospice
Foundation has taken to educate people and raise awareness about end-of-life issues around
the world. Creating and producing short documentary films – first Okuyamba and now Road to
Hope – is the vehicle we’ve chosen to spread the word.
Road to Hope documents the lives of child caregivers in Sub-Saharan Africa, who often are
the primary caregivers to a parent or parents facing serious, life-limiting issues. More and more
children are being orphaned as a result of losing one or both parents to HIV/AIDS and cancer
in these countries, as we found through work with our Ugandan partner, the Palliative Care
Association of Uganda. With no one to support them, these children are often forced to drop
out of school and look for casual jobs such as selling ground nuts on the streets in urban areas
or begging for money in order to survive.
The Road to Hope program was created to provide a safety net for some child caregivers who
could very easily find themselves on a much different road were it not for the assistance it gives.
The documentary will provide a platform to raise awareness of the program. As you’ll see in
the cover story, filming took place over the summer and editing is now in the works. Updates
on the children’s stories and documentary progress will be shared frequently on our website
roadtohopefilm.org, Facebook and Twitter.
Closer to home, the Hospice Foundation (in conjunction with the Bike Michiana Coalition) also
helped host the largest-ever Bike Michiana for Hospice. Even with less than ideal weather, we
were pleased to have 1,227 cyclists at the event.
The generous community support we receive is evidenced in the success of events such as Bike
Michiana for Hospice. It extends to the commitment to community shown by this issue’s Donor
Profile, 1st Source Bank. Their corporate and employee support is invaluable to numerous
organizations, including CHC/HF. We salute them as they celebrate their 150th anniversary!

A Memory Walk to Remember
More than 300 people gathered in Beutter
Park, Mishawaka to remember loved ones
and enjoy one of the summer’s finest days at
the 28th Annual Walk for Hospice. Walkers
took advantage of two routes along The
Riverwalk, officially named the “River St.
Joseph of the Miamis Trail.” The Riverwalk is
a beautifully landscaped, handicap-accessible
pathway on both banks of the river with
pedestrian footbridges connecting city parks.
The event kicked off with walkers and
volunteers gathering in the lawn area between
the river and the race. WNIT personality
and Michiana favorite Gordy Young was
this year’s MC. Music was provided by J.T.
and the Bare Essentials. Center for Hospice
Care Spiritual Care Counselor Ed Wilsberg
led the invocation and the Celebration of
Remembrance. Virginia Olson, CMT and
registered yoga teacher, then demonstrated a
series of stretches and warm up exercises to
get everyone set for the new route.

Rain Doesn’t Dampen Enthusiasm for
Bike Michiana for Hospice
Cyclists Brave the Rain for Two Local Charities
1,127 cyclists from the Midwest and beyond
took part in the 5th annual event on September
15th, riding routes that range from a familyfriendly 3.5 miles to a 125-mile trek to Weko
Beach in Bridgman, Michigan and back. Light
showers throughout the day didn’t seem
to impact either the rider turnout or their
enthusiasm for the event. In fact, more than
130 cyclists registered to ride the day of the
event. The event raised a total of $83,637.26,
with the proceeds benefitting both Center for
Hospice Care and Bike Michiana Coalition.
As one rider, who posted on the event’s
Facebook page noted, “We had a GREAT
time yesterday! My family and I all did the 44

my bike… [it was] the longest we have ever

Celebrating 20 Years of Camp Evergreen
20th Anniversary Celebration Held at the Cove
It was an evening of hugs, of smiles, of
shouted greetings and catching up. More
than 200 former campers, volunteer buddies
and staff from 20 years of Camp Evergreen
gathered at Stanley Coveleski Regional
Stadium to visit and share memories.
Camp Evergreen, a camp for grieving youth
and teens, has been put on at no charge
to campers and their families by Center for
Hospice Care. During its 20-year history, the
camp has served more than 700 campers.
Swoop, the South Bend Silverhawks mascot,
made an appearance at the Upper Deck
to greet younger camp alumni and their
families. Guests feasted on a picnic spread
and watched the game, parts of which were
played in the rain, from the comfort of the
Upper Deck.
Current camp director Holly Farmer led a
short program and introduced a new Camp
Evergreen video. She emphasized that the
camp has two important purposes: teaching
campers how to deal with grief in appropriate
ways and to have fun.

Hospice Care’s YouTube channel at

Ribbon Cutting Celebrates
New Campus Opening
On August 20, 2013, Center for Hospice
Care and the Hospice Foundation officially
welcomed the public to the organizations’
new Mishawaka Campus with a ribbon
cutting ceremony, Open House and reception
attended by approximately 300 people.
The ceremony included remarks from Center
for Hospice Care President/CEO Mark Murray,
Hospice Foundation Vice President/COO Mike
Wargo, National Hospice and Palliative Care
Organization President/CEO Don Schumacher,
Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood, and former
Mishawaka Mayor and current St. Joseph
County Chamber of Commerce President Jeff
Rea. Following the remarks, the speakers were
joined by Center for Hospice Care Board of
Directors Chairman Corey Cressy, Hospice
Foundation Board of Directors Chairman
Terry Rodino, architect Jeff Helman and DJ
Construction Company, Inc CEO Bob Schrock
to cut the ceremonial ribbon.
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed refreshments,
provided with special consideration by The
Beiger Mansion, and toured the new facility.
Attendees included government officials;
contractors who had worked on the building;
Center for Hospice Care employees and
families, CHC/HF board members and
supporters as well as area business owners
and neighbors to the new facility.
At a press conference preceding the ribbon
cutting ceremony, Murray commented, “I
think that this facility, this location, this
remarkable pastoral setting is not only a

testament to a tremendous collaboration
between Mishawaka and Center for Hospice
Care, but also a tangible example of the
incredible growth experienced by the
philosophy of hospice care.”
CHC has experienced an increased demand for
its services the past 10 years, and staff size has
doubled in response to this need. As a result,
additional office space has been required.
“We’ve been adding a few thousand additional
square feet of office space every few years to
the point that we were leasing as much space
in St. Joseph County as we owned,” said Karl
Holderman, chief financial officer. “If you do
the math, it doesn’t take one long to conclude
that owning makes a lot more sense for us than
continuing to add more leased facilities.”
In addition to the new construction, renovations
are taking place in two additional campus
structures. A residential home has been
remodeled for use as a Guest House and the
former Edgewater Florist building will be
transformed into a new Palliative Care Center.
The structures, located across the street from
one another at the corner of Cedar and Madison
Streets, were acquired as part of what has
become a nearly five-acre campus development.
Plans for the overall campus master plan,
which include the future addition of a
medical office building and new hospice
house as growth and funds permit, are being
closely coordinated with officials at the City
of Mishawaka as they develop plans for
improvements to the surrounding areas.

The Power to Change Lives
At the heart of hospice care is the belief
that everyone has the right to a pain-free,
dignified end-of-life experience. It includes
keeping patients comfortable and cared for
physically, emotionally and spiritually.
It also includes emotional support and
spiritual counseling for the family as well as
other social work/family support services.
Choosing Center for Hospice Care allows
patients and their families to make the most
of life.
In 1980, Center for Hospice Care made a
promise that no one eligible for hospice care
would be turned away – regardless of their
ability to pay. Each year during our Annual
Appeal those who donate help change the
lives of our patients and their loved ones.
From patient medication to grief counseling
to training volunteers, their gifts help those
for whom we care make the most of life.
Our Circle of Caring members reflect
the warm, generous spirit of our giving
community. In honor of their support each
member receives benefits based on annual
cumulative giving levels.

Honoring the memory of a loved one is one
of the most meaningful gestures we can
make. It was in this spirit that the outdoor
areas at Center for Hospice Care’s Elkhart
Campus were created… and which will be
honored at the new Mishawaka Campus
as well.
The 11-acre Elkhart Campus, with its tranquil
gardens, walking paths and sitting space, offers
a variety of opportunities to remember loved
ones by designating features to be named in
their honor. Since opening the doors to this
facility in 2008, which includes a seven-bed
Hospice House, more than 1,000 patients
and their loved ones have experienced the
skilled, specialized care they need in a warm,
home-like setting. The outdoor living areas
offer patients and their families the chance
to relax in solitude or to enjoy one another’s
company in a peaceful, natural setting.
Plans are underway for memorial areas,
including a veteran’s memorial, to be
developed at the new Mishawaka Campus
as well. Items such as bricks, benches, trees,
and prisms are under consideration as well as
larger memorial opportunities.
The donation of a memorial item enables
the giver to place the name of a loved one
on benches, evergreen or flowering trees,
or bricks inlaid in our winding walkways.
These gifts also helps us keep our 33-yearold promise that no one eligible for hospice
services will ever be turned away due to an
inability to pay.

Young Palliative Care Patients
Receive Support
The sad, difficult reality is that children
are sometimes in need of relief from the
symptoms that a life-limiting illness can
bring. Palliative care can improve the
quality of living for whatever time a child
may have remaining. Unfortunately, not all
families can afford this type of treatment.
Center for Hospice Care (CHC) provides
comprehensive physical, emotional and
spiritual support for anyone eligible for
services, including children facing lifelimiting illnesses, regardless of their ability
to pay.
To support pediatric patients in Elkhart
County, Goshen Hospital & Health Care
Foundation recently awarded a grant in the
amount of $11,000 from the HOPE Project
fund and 2013 Gala proceeds to provide
palliative care services through Center for
Hospice Care.
The mission of Goshen Hospital & Health

Survey
Being good stewards of the gifts that are entrusted to us
by our supporters is one of the most significant roles
undertaken by the Hospice Foundation. The importance
of trust for a not-for-profit organization is never more
important – or more visible – than when it comes to how
it uses its donors’ contributions.
Being good stewards of these contributions takes more
than transparency, however. It also means asking questions
of our donors and listening thoughtfully to their answers.
Donor input is vital as we work to build a sustainable future
for Center for Hospice Care and the Hospice Foundation.

Hospice Partnerships Around the Globe
Caring and Sharing:
The Heart of Palliative Care
The Palliative Care Association of Uganda
(PCAU) held its fifth Bi-Annual
Conference on Palliative Care August
25th and 26th in Kampala, Uganda. The
event was sponsored in part by Center for
Hospice Care and the Hospice Foundation
as part of the organizations’ FHSSA
(formerly known as Foundation for
Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa)
partnership program with PCAU.
The theme of this year’s conference was
“Caring and Sharing” and brought together
more than 400 delegates from Africa,
Europe and the US. In addition to
representation from 32 PCAU member
organizations, 70 health facilities were also
represented. Two Center for Hospice Care
employees, Karen Smith-Taljaard and Bridget
Hoch, were selected from among a number
of CHC staff members who submitted
proposals to PCAU’s Scientific Committee
to present at the conference. SmithTaljaard presented “Addressing Universal
Psychosocial Issues in Palliative Care”
while Hoch’s presentation was titled
“Assessing and Healing Spiritual Pain.”
palliative care, the support given by
Ugandan Parliamentarian Dr. Twa-Twa
Mutwalante Jeremiah was particularly
encouraging. He pledged to work with
the Ministry of Health to assure that
palliative care would receive funding.
The two-day event featured 13 plenary
presentations and four workshops.
In addition there were 34 breakout
presentations. The exhibit area of the
conference included seven stalls and
15 poster presentations.

a Social Worker at Center for Hospice Care (CHC). Along
with two poster presentations, CHC also sent two
presenters to the conference.
Employee Exchange Fosters Collaborative
Learning
Collaborative learning opportunities are
a hallmark of good partnerships. As part
of CHC/HF’s efforts to support Ugandan
partner, the Palliative Care Association of
Uganda (PCAU), two CHC employees took
part in the first employee exchange program
in August. The two employees selected,
Karen Smith-Taljaard and Bridget Hoch,
presented papers at PCAU’s 5th Bi-Annual
Conference. Following the conference, they
worked alongside their African counterparts;
Smith-Taljaard was at Hospice Jinja while
Hoch worked with peers from Hospice
Africa Uganda.
The exchange program not only provided
high-quality continuing professional education
for employees in both organization, it also
fostered links between the partners by
allowing CHC employees to shadow hospice
and palliative care workers in Uganda. In
addition to conference attendance, participants
also spent time working alongside some of
their African counterparts during the week
immediately following the conference.
“Witnessing their dedication was inspiring,”
Hoch reflected on her experience. “They are
very efficient with their resources and have
a personal passion for their work.” She also
noted that the way in which each partner
approached the program was “visionary.”
“The relationship we have developed as
partners is impressive. We are empowering
them to accomplish their priorities and helping
provide the resources to make that possible.”
Smith-Taljaard said, “My respect cannot
be fully described regarding how hospice
workers in Uganda handle the daily reality
of meeting their patient’s needs under
extremely difficult circumstances. From
limited medical supplies, to washed out
roads, unpredictable weather conditions and
basic utilities, to lack of simple office supplies
such as paper, pencils and pens. They find a
way to get things done. During the month I was
there, Hospice Jinja carried a daily caseload
of 800 active patients with a staff that
included three to four nurses and two to
three clinical directors plus two drivers.”
Bottom: Over 400 delegates from six countries attended the
conference, held at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala,
the capital city of Uganda.

Palliative Care Students Receive Partnership Support
Uganda is a country of 35 million inhabitants,
of whom just 10% have access to palliative
care, medical care that focuses on pain relief
and symptom management. The most
effective way to increase access is to provide
palliative care training. In Uganda, clinical
officers and nurses who have completed a
12-month clinical palliative care course can
prescribe oral morphine. These nurses are
able to travel to patients who are often too
sick to move, and prescribe and administer
pain relief drugs/medications in their homes.
Through a series of simple hand gestures,
a trained palliative care worker can rate the
patient’s level of pain and prescribe the
correct dosage. The effect for the patients is
dramatic – they are once again able to eat,
sleep, bathe, dress and enjoy time with their
families. To be precise, they regain quality
of life.
In 2008, through an innovative partnership
initiative developed by FHSSA (formerly
Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan
Africa), Center for Hospice Care/Hospice
Foundation was partnered with the Palliative
Care Association of Uganda (PCAU). PCAU’s
mission is to see that palliative care is available
to everyone in Uganda. This partnership has
led to the development of several initiatives,
among which is the employee-funded Uganda
Impact Fund. Through this fund, Center for

To help create awareness of these

the Hospice Foundation is producing
its second documentary, Road to

it will explore the unique challenges
of orphaned children after caring

as unintentional shepherds, to offer

CROSSROADS
The film crew consisted of Tim
Wolfer, of Wolfer Productions, who
served as Director of Photography.
Collin Erker and Marty Flavin,
both graduates of Notre Dame’s
Department of Film, Television
and Theatre, handled sound and
lighting and served as additional
camera operators. Denis Kidde,
Hospice Foundation’s International
Programming Representative, and
Rose Kiwanuka of PCAU served as
consultants for the project.
Also joining the crew in Africa for
most of the filming was actress and
hospice advocate Torrey DeVitto.
DeVitto, who is best known for her
work in primetime network television
shows such as Army Wives, Pretty
Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries.
DeVitto is passionate about raising
awareness of hospice and care
at the end of life. Since 2011 she
has worked with NHPCO and the
National Hospice Foundation as their
first official Hospice Ambassador.
Editing of the more than 60 hours of
footage taken in Africa has begun.
The film is slated for release in Fall
2014. To view a teaser for the film,

hospice Investment and donation information
Donor Profile: 1st Source Bank
The celebration of 150 years of business
is noteworthy in any field. But it is
particularly so in the financial industry,
which has seen many local and regional
financial institutions disappear as they
are acquired by huge national banks.
1st Source Bank has bucked that
trend, maintaining its strong regional
connections while building a reputation
for stability and integrity. With assets
totaling $4.6 billion, 76 community
banking centers in 22 counties and
a number of specialty offices located
across the country, 1st Source is known
as a solid, trusted financial partner.
1st Source Bank stands out not only
for its strength and longevity but for
its strong history of philanthropy as
well. According to its community
involvement report in 2012 1st Source
Bank and 1st Source Foundation

CROSSROADS
donated nearly $1 million to more
than 200 non-profit organizations in
the northern Indiana and southwest
Michigan communities it serves. Just
as impressively, 1st Source employees
volunteered more than 25,000 hours of
their time to community services.
One of the core values of 1st Source is
giving back to the community. As CEO
Christopher J. Murphy III noted in the
community involvement report, “Since
1863, 1st Source has focused equally
on helping our clients, and making our
communities better places to live, work
and raise our families.”
Center for Hospice Care is one of the
local non-profit organizations to benefit
from 1st Source’s community focus.
It has been a win/win relationship for
both organizations.
To get a sense of how Center for Hospice
Care has helped, 1st Source sent an e-mail
to employees living in Saint Joseph,
Elkhart and Marshall Counties asking
for thoughts they wished to share about
their experiences with the Center for
Hospice Care. Within two hours, over
20 responses poured in from employees
who were generous in their praise.
One of them came from Tom, 1st
Source employee and a CHC volunteer,
“Although I believed strongly in the
organization, I always hoped I wouldn’t
have to use it. When I did, they were
just as wonderful as I had heard.
Hearing my Dad ask, ‘Do you think
hospice would work for Mom and me?’
was hard, but I was extremely gratified
it was there and it worked just as I
had been taught. They are the most
compassionate people I ever met.”

Alice Cleppe: Compassion
and Commitment
The Hospice Foundation is grateful for the generosity of the many groups
that support its mission through their independent fundraising efforts,
grantsmanship and donations. Although we cannot recognize every
effort, we are pleased to take this opportunity to recognize the following
and thank all of those in the community who support our agency.
Trinity Information Services staff at Trinity Health paid to wear
jeans to work for a “Jeans Dollar” event that raised $616.
Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc Beta Gamma Mishawaka chapter
donated $425 to be used to sponsor campers at Camp Evergreen.
The Staff at Dr. DelPilar’s office put out a jar to collect coins and
donated $15.58 to Center for Hospice Care.
The Center for Hospice Care received a $250 grant from Cassady
Neeser & Brasseur matched by a $250 grant from The Selective
Group Foundation.
Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc – Tri Kappa (Plymouth) donated $200
to further our mission.
The Eatery/Reads & Things of Granger Community Church
selected Center for Hospice Care to receive spare change donated by
patrons of their restaurant or retail space - $480 was donated to CHC.
Dec-O-Art and its employees earmarked a portion of their profits for
the Center for Hospice Care to help us to continue to help patients
and their families - $650 was donated.

Members of the St. Joe Valley Street Rods club recently presented
Center for Hospice Care and Hospice Foundation with a check for
$11,000. For the fourth year in a row, members of the club sold
Barnaby’s pizza coupons to raise the money. To date, SJVSR has
donated $32,250 to support CHC and HF.
NCIAFA
The North Central Indiana Chapter of the National Association of
Insurance and Financial Advisors held their 15th Annual Joseph E.
Smith Memorial Golf Tournament benefitting Center for Hospice
Care (CHC). This year’s event raised $6,000 for CHC. Throughout
the years, the event has raised a total of $78,100.
A discussion with Alice Cleppe about her
experiences as a Center for Hospice Care
volunteer is like strolling back through all
the chapters of the organization’s history.
Alice began as a volunteer 25 years ago,
in the very early days, and has watched
CHC grow from a small non-profit to a
nationally recognized leader in its field.
“I sat across the desk from Tom Burzynski
(who led the organization at that time)
and he asked me ‘why do you want to
volunteer?’ At the time, I didn’t have any
answer other than I just wanted to be part
of the organization.”
Her husband, former CHC board member
Bob Cleppe, noted that she must have been
convincing as she began working as a home
health care volunteer immediately. It was
a position she held until her “retirement”
this spring. It was at this spring’s volunteer
luncheon that Alice was honored for her
25 years of service.
“Compassion and commitment are the
qualities that make a great hospice
volunteer. Alice Cleppe epitomizes both
of these. Being a patient care volunteer
can be challenging, both physically and
emotionally, but Alice always looked
beyond herself to focus on the patient’s
need. Her selfless giving is what made her
special to our organization,” said Debra
Mayfield, CHC Volunteer Coordinator.
Always one to become very attached to the
patients for whom she cared, Alice’s only
request was that she work only with adult
patients. For the most part she did – although
one of the patients she remembers most
fondly was her first pediatric patient.
In addition to her CHC volunteer role, Alice
also spent eight years with the Christ Child
Society mentoring first graders at St. Adalbert’s
School. “I recently went back there for
another volunteer recognition and all the
children ran right up to me. They remembered
The Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association donated half

Alice Cleppe and her husband Bob (l), pictured with
John E. Krueger, MD, were awarded the John E. Krueger
Hospice Caring Award in 2002 for their dedication as
Center for Hospice Care volunteers. The award was
initiated in 1994 and awarded to the man whose name
it bears for his years of devoted volunteer service. This
award is given annually to a volunteer(s) who exemplify
his commitment.

me – and that I was the lady who brought
them treats,” she said with a smile.
Modest as always, Alice said of her volunteer
work, “I just wanted to be of some help.”
At CHC she will be remembered for far more
than that… her compassion and way with
patients and their families are unsurpassed.
Be Aware!
It seems that the holiday season and
phone campaigns to raise funds are gearing up. However, not all of them are what
they seem to be. We want our supporters
to know that Center for Hospice Care and
Hospice Foundation DO NOT raise money
through telemarketing campaigns. Nor do
we hire outside firms to do this for us.
If you’re told by telemarketers that your
money will be used to support local
organizations be sure to verify it with a
phone call to that organization. Don’t
write a check or give out your credit card
information without confirming your
donation is going to the organization you
choose to support.
In addition, it’s always a good idea to do
your own research on any organization
you support financially. There are
numerous online sources for verify that
the organization is legitimate. A good
starting point is http://www.consumer.ftc.

Annual Appeal 2013 – Your Gift
Has the Power to Change Lives
The stories of Alyssa and Jennifer are just two of the thousands of
stories of lives that have been changed by Center for Hospice Care.
Each dollar donated makes more of these stories possible. From
patient medication and grief counseling to in-home care, your gift
makes a difference in the lives of our patients and their loved ones.
Perhaps most importantly, it comes at a time when caring is most needed.
If you would like to donate to this year’s Annual Appeal,
visit www.centerforhospice.org/2013AnnualAppeal.
