n one sense, 25 years of Buffalo Prep is a remarkable achievement; it means that for two and a half decades, Western New York
I
has come together to make a positive difference for exceptional students.
Dennis R. Black
But in another sense, 25 years actually doesn’t seem all that remarkable, when you consider the impact we have on each and every
student lasts their entire lifetime. That’s the most important achievement!
In our different lives, we understand the value of prep – preparation;
Before we take on an assignment, we prepare, we prep.
Before we can do an event – we organize, we prep.
Before we take on a work or home project, we plan – we prep.
Before a sports season starts, we practice – we prep.
Before we cook, we prepare – we prep.
Before we build, before you “cut”, as they say we measure – we prep.
President
Message from the
“Prep” gives us an opportunity to organize, plan, practice, and to build. Prep gives us an
opportunity to do better, and…do more. The success of our students, Buffalo Prep students over
the years, is “…in the Prep.”
The program with your support, gives our students the opportunity to excel:
They prepare,
They organize,
They plan,
They practice,
They build, and
They grow.
Dennis R. Black, President
Vice President for University Life and Services
University at Buffalo
They are given a foundation to do better – and to do so much more (with 100% accepted into college)!
As we say now, “It’s all in the Prep!” That is the “Prep” that you provide to hundreds of students each year, through Buffalo Prep – and
for that we say “thank you”.
After a year of reflection and visioning, we recently adopted a new three-year strategic plan for Buffalo Prep. It reminds us of our
mission, vision, core values and goals. It also challenges us to do more – for more; to serve at least 20% more students with improving
outcomes through 2016. Working with our students and families, staff and partner schools, and with continued community support,
we’ll be working together to make this strategy a reality in the years ahead.
So take a look at what we have done together – for 25 years – making positive differences that last a lifetime. That’s Buffalo Prep;
then, today, and tomorrow! That’s what you make happen!
02 Marcia O’Neil-White
t’s hard to believe that Buffalo Prep will be celebrating its 25 anniversary this year! Many things have changed since those
I
early days but not our mission to prepare promising economically disadvantaged under-represented students for success in college
th
preparatory high schools and higher education. Our inspirational and visionary founders laid the foundation that has enabled us to
grow and serve more deserving young people in our community. Beginning in 1989, a few brave students were the inaugural High
School Prep class. Today, we have three programs that prepare students for middle school, high school and college. This past year
over 400 students participated in our programs.
Message
from the
Marcia O’Neil-White
Executive Director, Buffalo Prep
Executive
Director
As we head into the new year, we have a bold strategic plan that will focus on sustainable growth
and a commitment to continuous quality improvement. We thank the Joy Family Foundation
for funding this initiative that enabled the board and staff to plan not only for today but for the
future. Additional thanks to outgoing board president Willow Brost and past board president
Suzy Sears who have provided steadfast support, inspiration, and guidance to Prep. Last but not
least, none of our work would be possible without YOU our donors. Stay tuned for more exciting
Prep news as we begin our next 25!

uffalo Prep was created in 1989 by education
B
and community leaders to serve two distinct, related
purposes: (1) to help bright, economically disadvantaged
minority students prepare for, obtain and excel in
demanding college-preparatory high schools, and (2)
to help our partner private, independent and college
preparatory public schools recruit, embrace and take
advantage of a more diverse student body. The first
program implemented was the High School Prep program
(formerly known as Secondary Prep).

Over the course of 25 years, Buffalo Prep has provided
“an education of a lifetime” for our deserving students.
As we listened to parents, students and educators, we
recognized the need to offer a wider range of programs to
serve different age groups in the community. In 1999, we
launched our “College Prep” program, which offers college
and career counseling, including financial aid workshops,
scholarship information, an SAT prep course and college
tours.

In 2000, Buffalo Prep partnered with The John R. Oishei Foundation and launched the Rising to Distinction (RTD) program. This
initiative provides counseling, tutoring, high school readiness and college counseling services to students who receive the John R.
Oishei Scholarship to attend one of the 16 BISSNET private and independent schools. The program also includes minority students
from BISSNET schools who need additional tutoring assistance or help with college preparation.
In the summer of 2001, Buffalo Prep continued growing with the addition of “Middle School Prep.” This program provides talented
post 5th and post 6th graders with a five week arts-integrated, academic enrichment experience during the summer. Each year, these
students have significantly raised their language arts and mathematics scores and avoid the “summer learning loss” experienced
by many students who do not participate in academic work. Our Middle School Prep students are more prepared to succeed in the
important middle school years. As an outgrowth of Buffalo Prep’s 2009 “Growth and Sustainability Plan,” an academic year program for
7th graders was added to fill the gap between the summer program
and High School Prep.

06 Program Highlights
Middle School Prep (MSP) offers an enriching academic, cultural, and social summer program
experience for qualified post fifth and sixth grade students. Middle school is a pivotal period in a
student’s development, and this program helps prepare students to excel in school and exposes
them to the resources of Buffalo Prep and other appropriate educational opportunities. The yearround program welcomes the top students from the summer program to a 25 week enrichment
opportunity during the academic school year. These students are selected based on conduct, work
ethic, and academic performance.
Middle School
PREP
The MSP summer and year-round programs reinforce the important skills of organization, time management, and social development.
These skills and habits are foundational to success in middle and high school. This past summer, 100 students completed the Middle School
Prep program at Nichols Middle School. The curriculum’s driving force was the history of Buffalo, New York. This year’s results showed an
average increase of 16.19 points in technology scores, 36.74 points in social studies, 35 points in ELA, and 27.56 points in mathematics.
The 2013-2014 year-round program will be an extension of the 2013 summer program theme: “Buffalo, New York” welcoming 38
students.
ongratulations to the High School Prep Class of 2013 for successfully completing the rigorous 14 month program. These exceptional,
C
hard-working students attended classes for two summers (six weeks each), two days a week after school and Saturdays to prepare
themselves for a challenging college preparatory high school curriculum. This year’s graduates are now freshmen attending: Buffalo
Academy of the Sacred Heart, Buffalo Seminary, Canisius High School, Nardin Academy, Nichols School, The Park School, St. Joseph’s
Collegiate Institute, Hutchinson Central Technical Institute, City Honors, Tapestry Charter School, and Leonardo DaVinci High School.
We would like to extend our most sincere gratitude to our partner schools and the John R. Oishei Foundation for providing significant
scholarship support for our students!
During the course of the 14 month program, students received tutorial support for both day school academic work and academic work
assigned by High School Prep faculty, particularly in the areas of math and writing. High School Prep students achieved an average of a 30%
increase in post-testing results.
HIGH
School
PREP
Highlights from the academic year include: the Buffalo Prep Science Bowl team represented themselves
and Buffalo Prep very well during the local Science Bowl competition, where they earned the honor of
being the most professionally dressed team; one student published her own book that is available through
Amazon’s Kindle; four students were awarded the John R. Oishei Scholarship for high school; and one
student was selected to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador program.
ollege Prep assists students in grades 9-12 during their high school years to prepare for admission to college by providing academic
C
and social counseling, college visits/tours, SAT preparation, college essay writing, and The Common Application and Financial Aid
workshops. For the second academic year, we are providing weekly mentoring programs (“Rising Sons Mentoring and Leadership” and the
“Sisters, Let’s Talk” programs) for both the male and female students.
PREP
College
College Prep offers sophomores a one-day Princeton Review Assessment (PRA) test. The PRA is
a four-hour SAT/ACT hybrid exam that helps students determine their strengths and weaknesses.
Those who have taken the PRA showed an increase of 405 points on the SAT during their junior
year. Juniors who participated in the SAT/Princeton Review program, scored an average gain of
360 points.
During the 2012-2013 academic years, the Director of College Prep and Director of Academics and
Program Evaluation served 63 Oishei Scholars and 43 other minority students through academic enrichment and social support. During the
2012-2013 academic year, Buffalo Prep enrolled 130 students in grades 9-12 who were referred to Buffalo Prep by our partner schools as
needing additional academic support. This year, 2,137 tutorial sessions were conducted to improve student’s academic achievement.
The past school year, 58 students were enrolled in AP or honors classes; five RTD students were enrolled in advanced or honors math
courses, eight students in advanced or honors science courses, 18 in advanced or honors English courses, 21 in advanced or honors history
courses, four in advanced or honors foreign language courses and forty-nine students earned places on the merit and/or honor roll in their
schools this year.
College Prep graduates are attending the following colleges/universities this fall: Canisius College - four (Criminal Justice) (Communications) - (English Literature) - (Pre-Med); Daemen College (Physical Therapy D.P.T.), Bentley University (Entrepreneurship/
Business Administration), Rochester Institute of Technology (Electrical Engineer); University at Buffalo - two (Psychology) - (Computer
