Sentara Health Foundation Spring 2012 • Volume 17 Mobile Meals: Inspiring Kindness Helps Others in Need When you are elderly or sick, worrying about fixing meals can sometimes be too much to handle. Worrying that your loved ones aren’t getting nutritious meals daily can also be very stressful. Luckily, Mobile Meals of Norfolk helps to calm this stress by preparing and delivering meals to those in need. On a daily basis, the Mobile Meals team provides two nutritious meals to elderly individuals, people out of rehabilitation or to anyone who needs food to be prepared for them. The meals are delivered by a large group of dedicated volunteers, some of whom have been supporting the program for more than 30 years! Doree Richardson, Volunteer Coordinator for Mobile Meals of Norfolk, recently was touched by an inspiring act of kindness by a Mobile Meals recipient’s family. When Mr. Byron Graves passed away, his daughter asked friends and family to make donations to the Mobile Meals program in lieu of flowers. This kind gesture helped fund Mobile Meals with over $2,000 in donations. These donated funds will benefit program participants who may not be able to afford the service otherwise. Don Long loads hot meals into his trunk for delivery. Long serves as the program’s “right-hand man” and has helped Volunteer Coordinator, Doree Richardson for over 10 years. While Doree stresses how fortunate she is to have such a dedicated team of volunteers, Mobile Meals is always in need of new program participants. Hospice care is usually delivered in the home, provided by caregivers who visit frequently based on the patient’s care plan. For those patients whose terminal care cannot be accomplished at home, the alternatives are a hospital or nursing home. But, in some cases, hospitals and nursing homes are not suitable for those who need hospice care. In order to respond to community need, a dedicated inpatient hospice unit has opened at Sentara CarePlex Hospital. To maintain the hospice philosophy of care, the inpatient hospice unit is a place of dignity, comfort and peace. This unit offers four patient beds with an atmosphere more like a home than a hospital. The rooms complement “in-home” hospice care and increase the options available to hospice patients and their families. The unit features private, spacious bedrooms, furnished and decorated for a home-like atmosphere, with a view of beautifully landscaped grounds. Each bedroom is also equipped with accommodations for a family member to stay overnight. During March, the employees at Sentara CarePlex Hospital showcased their generosity by participating in an employee giving campaign. Throughout the month, Donna Sternberg, clinical manager, and Diane Deutsch, clinical nurse II, helped distribute and collect pledge forms, awarded raffle prizes to the lucky winners, and baked cookies, cakes, and breads for the bake sale. Their efforts, combined with the kindhearted donations from Sentara CarePlex employees helped provide more than $19,000 in funds to directly benefit the enhancement of the unit’s homelike atmosphere. Transitioning to end of life is difficult, but having a supportive team and environment to enjoy precious time with family makes for an easier journey. This is the time to be with loved ones, to remember and cherish those who are still here today. Now is the chance to help us create a warm, welcoming and comforting place for families saying goodbye. New Cardiac Rehab Space Opens at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Following heart surgery, every patient has two goals – recover from the surgery and improve their heart’s function. For the 12th year, Sentara Heart Hospital has been ranked among the nation’s best heart programs by the U.S. News & World Report. In 2011-12, Sentara Heart Hospital ranked 47th out of 4,852 hospitals – the only hospital in Virginia to make the top 50. Sentara Heart Hospital rehabilitation delivers services to hospitalized cardiac patients and provides outpatient cardiac rehab for patients following heart surgery or a heart attack. Patients receive individualized cardiac rehab services that address risk factor modification, exercise and nutrition, and psychological and vocational needs. Highly qualified and experienced cardiac staff monitor heart rhythm and blood pressure during exercise. In group settings or one-on-one, patients are encouraged to share how dealing with challenges of everyday living affects their lifestyle. Jevie Lee, exercise physiologist at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, uses the stationary bicycles when developing exercise plans for her cardiac rehabilitation patients. 2 Such a world-class program needs to have the kind of world-class facility that these patients deserve – one that is convenient, upgraded and enhanced for optimum rehabilitative care. After all, part of what helps caregivers create successful outcomes for patients is having access to state-ofthe-art equipment.
