God and the Problem of Evil
Over the last few months this country has witnessed a number of
tragic acts of violence and mass murder. For example, one can think
of the mass shooting at an Episcopal church in Charleston; or the
shooting in the movie theater in Lafayette; or more recently, the
shooting at a college in Oregon—to name just a few. After such terrible incidents, I am sure that, at least from a religious standpoint,
questions have been raised about God’s presence (or lack thereof) in
such cases. These questions are not new, however, as they have been
raised centuries and centuries before our time. Believers and nonbelievers alike would have doubts about God’s goodness when the
question of suffering comes up. This is known as the “problem of evil.” Put succinctly, the problem of
evil challenges the assumption that God can be a good God while so much evil is experienced in the
world: such as warfare, hunger, sickness, death of innocent people, etc.
In his short book Christianity Rediscovered, Father Vincent Donovan describes his missionary experience with the Masai (East African) people. During his first week of instruction, he asked the people what they thought of God. One Masai elder stood up and said: “If I ever run into God, I will put a
spear through him.” In a word, this elder found it difficult to reconcile, on the one hand, belief in the
existence of a good God; and on the other hand, the “numbing reality” of a life that includes pain,
death of children, and loss of cattle. Vincent Donovan noted that the Masai elder’s thinking was not
much different from the mentality of many young Americans and Europeans of the day (1970’s); and
not much different from the thinking of Albert Camus in his novel The Plague (a French novel about a
deadly rat epidemic that spread out in a small North African town—Camus, who was an atheist,
through the different characters of the novel, seemed to struggle with this problem of evil too).
What Vincent Donovan describes in this short passage in his book is really a universal experience:
people of all ages and cultures and religions do ponder in some way the reality of the problem of evil.
Thus, it is not only children who ask questions about how an omnipotent and omniscient God could
allow such evils in the world, but even the sophisticated Albert Camus might have had the same questions. In the Christian traditions, the classic attempt at a solution to this problem dated back to the time
of St. Augustine of Hippo (d. 431), and was elaborated by St. Thomas Aquinas (13th century). Both
Augustine and Thomas asserted that evil is a non-entity: that is, it does not exist as a created reality.
Everything created by God is good and cannot be evil. Thus, evil is a privation of the good; and in the
strict philosophical sense, cannot exist…
While I must admit that there is much validity to the classical position—the philosophical implications of which I do not fully understand—I would say that it does not really explain the reality of evil
in our world. The 20th century has been the most violent one in the history of humanity. After all the
atrocities the last century has witnessed, does God still seem present? After the Holocaust, could the
Jewish people as a whole believe they were still the chosen people of God? Does an all-loving and allknowing God seem to care when so many people die of hunger, famine, war, and the like?
We shall never have any clear answer to these questions and related ones. Unfortunately the lack of
answers has led believers to abandon the faith or be reserved about it; and has given non-believers the
opportunity to disregard the faith altogether. But in the end, believers must somehow stand speechless
in front of the infinite mystery of God. It is our faith that leads to hope. And hope is not just a false
sense of optimism, a false belief that everything is going to be fine. Hope is rather the conviction that
things will ultimately make sense in the end: that despite all the lunacy this world has experienced and
is experiencing, humanity is not doomed to meaningless and absurdity.

ARE SPIRITUAL STATUS SEEKERS SELF SERVING?
Politics is about cutting deals. Mercy rarely enters into the world of political considerations. Mercy,
in the most basic sense is a gift and not a reward. We cannot absolutely depend on when, where or
how much reward or mercy we might experience, it is tempting to try and cut a deal like the Apostles James and John appear to be doing in our Gospel this Sunday. We like to insure that we'll get
our reward, regardless of the needs, wants and desires of others. When the other ten Apostles get
wind of what James and John are attempting, predictably, they became indignant.
Jesus instructs them and us that we are not about politics when dealing
with one another because most people are somewhat self centered, we’re
possibly looking for a payoff for our sufferings and sacrifices. Surrendering
our right to be right may be the biggest sacrifice of all. We love to be right,
and we love to have people do things our way. Why should we give up anything?
It’s easy to dismiss what Jesus is saying by making it about rulers and political structures, yet in our families, businesses, and even the Church, politics
can creep in, just as it did for the Apostles. How do we resist the temptation
to descend to the kind of deal making and bickering that engulfed the apostles? To become a slave of all does not sound like a particularly appealing
strategy for most of us, however, that is what our Lord is suggesting.
Jesus appears to be advocating the notion of pouring ourselves out for one
another, as Paul indicates Jesus did in Philippians 2:7 “He emptied himself.”
Most of us would probably prefer being like the Gentiles who lord it over
one another. Jesus demonstrates that serving and surrendering are superior
to cutting the best deal for ourselves. Imagine a world of people who practiced mutual mercy.
When we look around us and see what is going on in the world, largely we
see situations where the legitimate needs of people are ignored or minimized because virtually everyone is pursuing their legitimate self interests.
That is all James and John were doing. That id all most of us are doing.
What's the big deal?
Pope Francis, by declaring the coming year as a Holy Year of Mercy, is inviting us to look at readings such as the Gospel for this Sunday, and ask ourselves different questions than we might normally. Often we might focus on how noble and wonderful Jesus is for giving his life as a ransom for
many, and let it go at that, however, it is possible that is merely the beginning of the story of being
Catholics in this world. Celebrating the Vatican Council 50 years ago, is remembering an awakening to a new relationship of the Church with the modern world. When being right in terms of the
modern world entails being indifferent to the demands of justice, something has to give. As Pope
Paul VI stated, Never give in charity what is owed in justice. Perhaps today, we are invited to consider something new, the Politics of Mercy!

We have been preparing for the Year of Mercy as a Parish and School Community using spiritual as well as civil
days to enter the experience of what it means to ...enter into the heart of mercy.
In the next month we will be presenting in our Parish Bulletin and Website Pope Francis’ Pastoral Letter on
the Year of Mercy as well as other articles and resources that will help us as individuals and as a parish community prepare for this wonderful “Year of Grace.”
The next two preparation weekends for the Year of Mercy will take place on Saturday, October 31st to Sunday,
November 1st and on Saturday, November 14th to Sunday, November 15th.
On the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls we will entrust in mercy those “saints” who have gone before us in
faith. As in the past, we invite our community to bring pictures of loved ones to place on our Altar of Mercy. All
names on our All Soul’s Envelopes will be remembered each day at Eucharist during the month of November
as well as those whose pictures and memorabilia on our Altar of Mercy. The weekend of October 31st and November 1st, we will have a special Ritual Recalling of our beloved deceased and in mercy entrust them to God.
On Saturday, November 14th and Sunday, November 15th, we will observe in Mercy our Veteran’s. Near the
Baptismal Font we have displayed the American Flag next to the pictures of the Vets who have given their lives
in service to our country. This Veteran’s Observance will focus on the Vets from all branches who were deployed and have returned home, but suffer from various physical and psychological disabilities. In mercy we
want to remember these wonderful veterans in a special way throughout the Year of Mercy. We will place a
board (opposite our deceased Veteran’s Board) and we ask parishioners to bring pictures of family, friends, and
fellow colleagues who have returned home and are in need of our communal prayers at Eucharist as well as
our expressions of support and care. A special Prayer Book will be placed by the pictures for parishioners to
enter the names of Vets who are living and would like remembered. We ask that you write on the back of the
picture the name of the Vet and address, so we can send a card to them.
During the Month of September, the Confirmation Leadership sponsored Pets for Vets. Your generosity enable
our parish to sponsor four (4) special needs dogs for our Vets. The weekend of Saturday, November 14th and
Sunday, November 15th, Pets for Vets will be present with us to share the importance of this merciful gesture
on the part of our community and to express their appreciation. At the 5:00 PM Sunday Evening Eucharist, the
pets that were adopted will be present and blessed.
This will be a very special day for our Vets at Saint Angela Merici. We encourage all Vets to attend Eucharist on
this weekend, wear their uniforms, and allow us as a parish community to acknowledge our thanks for their
service to our country and to honor them with prayer, care, and walk with them into the heart of mercy.
Finally, during the Month of November as we prepare for Thanksgiving in Mercy we will be distributing small
Boxes of Joy (Mercy), which will include a “list” of small items such as laces, tooth brushes, soap, etc. which
we can be returned during the weeks of November or on Thanksgiving Day. The boxes will be blessed at a special Ritual at our Thanksgiving Eucharist and through the Diocese of Orange be distributed by Cross Catholic
Outreach.
Please SAVE these two Preparations for the Year of Mercy weekends in November: October 31/November 1
(All Saints/Souls) and November 14/November 15 and be an avenue of mercy by bringing pictures of your
beloved deceased for our remembrance and pictures of Vets who are living and have given so much in service
to our county and begin to gather “small” items for our Parish Thanksgiving Boxes of Mercy. Mary, Mother
of Mercy...pray for us!

Active Christians Today (A.C.T.) Ministry
Year of Mercy ... when I was hungry you
gave me something to eat.
Do you sometimes
feel or think that God
may be calling you to
reflect the words of
Pope Francis who
invites us to be merciful to the poor, to
those who live on the
fringes of life and
make them feel that
they are not forgotten? If so, perhaps the A.C.T. Office
may be the place God is calling to live the mercy of
your faith. As we prepare for the Year of Mercy the
A.C.T. Office needs a volunteer to pick up bread at the
local Brea Grocery Store(s) on Monday mornings and
bring them to the Parish Center Office – A.C.T. Office,
so the loaves of mercy can be distributed to those in
need.

ADORATION CHAPEL
INTENTIONS
FOR THE WEEK
How CLOSE are you to the Lord? With
these unpredictable times, we need to
become very CLOSE to Him. How do
you do that?
Fr. John Foley (by the
way, he is a living priest and is wonderful) says to "Stop thinking that your life
will ever make sense if you fill it with piles
of stuff and forget the one thing you need
the most: CLOSENESS to God and
CLOSENESS through God to everyone
and everything else." The answer is to come to the
Chapel! There are books for the little ones in the back
room, as well as the older children or they can just talk
or pray to the Lord about school, whatever their needs
are at this time! Remind them the Lord is their CLOSEST friend.!

this visit part of your weekly or monthly routine. Children learn by what they see and follow by example.
They will carry this experience with them the rest of
their lives!
