SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING APPLIQUES 4 RIGHT SIDE WRONG SIDE INTERFACING LINING 4. Center baby rick-rack over solid lines on body, turning ends to WRONG side. Stitch along center of trim. Read General Directions on page 1 before you begin. 5 GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR APPLIQUES 5. Cut two pieces of grosgrain ribbon each 2" (5cm) long. Fold ribbon in half, having raw ends even. Pin ends of ribbon 1/4" (6mm) under body applique at small dots. Lap side edges of body along inner edge of wings, matching broken lines. Pin. Baste close to raw edges. PREPARING APPLIQUES A. Apply paper backed fusing web remnant to WRONG side of applique fabric remnant, following manufacturer’s directions. Cut applique tissue block along outer solid line. Pin pattern to RIGHT side of prepared fabric remnant. Cut out each applique from prepared fabric. Transfer markings to RIGHT side of applique using a washable fabric marking pen or pencil. A 6 APPLYING APPLIQUES B. Pin appliques to garment as instructed in Sewing Directions. Be sure to clear all seam allowances. A glue stick can be used to temporarily hold the appliques in place before stitching. Fuse appliques in place, following manufacturer’s directions. Stitch close to raw edges or if you prefer, zig-zag (satin) stitch along raw edges. B A MONKEY APPLIQUE VIEW C Prepare head, face and ear appliques. SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING APPLIQUES 7. Center face applique over head along broken lines. Pin ends of ear applique under head along broken lines. Center applique over small dot on front. SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR APPLYING APPLIQUES Stitch close to outer edges of face and head. Stitch again along first stitching. Stitch two rows along solid line for mouth in same manner. Work FRENCH KNOT at small dots for eyes. Cut a piece of 3/8" (1cm) wide grosgrain ribbon 13” (33cm) long. Tie in a bow and tack to head as shown on front of envelope. 7 FRENCH KNOT- For French knot, work with as many threads as desired and use a large eyed needle. Bring thread to RIGHT side at A; hold thread with thumb and forefinger in left hand; wind thread around the needle two or three times. Still holding thread firmly, slide on needle so that point of needle may be inserted very close to A, but not in the same hole. Pull needle to WRONG side, drawing up thread to form French Knot. FRENCH KNOT 6. Center applique over small dot on front. SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR APPLYING APPLIQUES Stitch close to outer edges of body and wings Stitch again along first stitching. Stitch two rows along solid line for mouth in same manner. Work FRENCH KNOT at small dots for eyes. DRESS A, B, C, D 2 1 BEAR APPLIQUE VIEW D LADYBUG APPLIQUE VIEW A 8 Prepare head and body appliques. SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR APPLIQUES 1. Pin WRONG side of head applique over RIGHT side of body applique, placing straight edge of head along broken lines, as shown. Stitch close to raw edges. 3 2. Cut eight pieces of grosgrain ribbon each 2" (5cm) long. Fold ribbon in half, having raw ends even. Pin ends of ribbon 1/4" (6mm) under applique at small dots. Baste close to raw edge. 9 Prepare head and muzzle appliques. SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING APPLIQUES 8. Center muzzle applique over head along broken lines. Center applique over small dot on front. SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR APPLYING APPLIQUES Stitch close to outer edges of muzzle and head. Stitch again along first stitching. Stitch two rows along solid line for mouth in same manner. Work FRENCH KNOT at small dots for eyes and nose. Cut a piece of 3/8" (1cm) wide grosgrain ribbon 13” (33cm) long. Tie in a bow and tack to head as shown on front of envelope. TRIM VIEWS A, D 3. Center applique over small dot on front. SEE GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING APPLIQUES. Stitch close to outer edges and again over first stitching. Stitch two rows of machine-stitching along solid line for mouth. Work FRENCH KNOT at small dots for eyes. 9. Press under 3/8" (1cm) on unnotched edge of trim. Pin WRONG side of trim over RIGHT side of band matching centers, having raw edges even. Baste raw edges. Stitch close to pressed edge. 10 CONTINUE AS FOLLOWS FOR ALL VIEWS 10. With RIGHT sides together, stitch front to band matching centers. English 2383 HAT E 3/3 1 11 NOTE: Stitch in 3/8" (1cm) seams unless otherwise indicated. 1. Apply fusible interfacing to WRONG side of hat top, crown, brim and corresponding contrast lining sections, following manufacturer’s directions. 11. Stitch front to back at side seams from lower edge to large dot matching seams. Back-stitch at large dot to reinforce seam. Press under 5/8" (1.5cm) on armhole opening edges. Press under 1/4" (6mm) on raw edge of armhole and side seam; stitch close to pressed edges. 12 13 12. Press under 1-5/8" (4cm) on upper edge of front to INSIDE, forming casing. Press under 1/4" (6mm) on raw edge. Stitch close to lower edge of casing. Stitch back casing same as for front. 13. Press up hem. To EDGE FINISH the raw edge...stitch under 1/4" (6mm), zigzag, OR overlock/serge. Slip-stitch hem in place. 2. Press under 3/8" (1cm) on unnotched edge of hat trim. Pin WRONG side of trim over RIGHT side of crown matching centers, having raw edges even. Baste raw edges. Stitch close to pressed edge. 2 3. Stitch center back seam of hat crown. RIBBON TIES VIEWS A, B 14 4 3 5 14. Cut ribbon in half. Insert ribbon through each front and back casing. Gather up front and back along ribbon, having ends extending evenly. Try on garment and adjust if necessary. Pin ends of casing in place. Stitch across ends of casing along previous stitching, catching in ribbon. Trim ends diagonally and tie in a bow. 5. Stitch center back seam of hat brim. 6 7 15 4. With RIGHT sides together, pin hat top to upper edge of crown, matching centers, having raw edges even. Stitch seam. Clip curves. 6. On OUTSIDE, pin brim to crown, matching centers. Stitch seam. TRIM VIEW B 7. Stitch center back seam of hat crown lining, leaving an opening to turn, as shown. Press seam open. 15. Pin rick-rack to lower edge of garment, having center 1” (2.5cm) above finished edge, turning under and lapping one end at one side seam. Stitch along center of rick rack. Apply two more rows above first row, spacing 1” (2.5cm) apart. Continue same as for Hat, see steps 4 through 6. 8 16 8. With RIGHT sides together, pin lining to hat matching centers, having raw edges even. Stitch lower edge of hat brim. Trim seam; clip curves. RIBBON TIE VIEWS C, D 16. Insert ribbon through front and back casing. Gather up front and back along ribbon, having ends extending evenly at LEFT side. Trim ends diagonally and tie in a bow. TRIM VIEW C 17 17. Pin one edge of grosgrain ribbon 1/2" (1.3cm) above lower edge of band, turning under and lapping one end at one side seam. Stitch close to both long edges of trim. Apply another row of ribbon 1/2" (1.3cm) below upper edge of band in same manner.. Center novelty ribbon between upper and lower ribbons, turning under and lapping one end at one side seam. Turn RIGHT side out, turning lining to INSIDE through opening in crown lining. Slip-stitch opening. 9 10 10. Turn hat to RIGHT side. Press. Stitch close to outer edge of brim. Tie ribbon in a bow. Trim ends. Tack ribbon to center of hat crown.
